Discover a region of contrasting landscapes where unspoilt natural beauty thrives and inspires the artists, writers and sculptors who live and work in these charming towns and villages. Follow this beautiful coastline and every few miles you’ll come across one of the region’s charming towns or villages. Discover history in the regional capital, Dumfries, explore the region’s cultural side in Kirkcudbright, the Artists’ Town, and browse the bookshops of Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town.

Dumfries & Galloway is blessed with a beautiful coast and splendid countryside with all the natural elements which will be celebrated during 2013, the Year of Natural Scotland. Savour the tranquillity of a woodland walk through the vast forests, wander along some of the 200 miles of shoreline beside the Solway Firth or simply meander through the quaint streets of the region’s coastal villages. One of the most inspirational landscapes of the region is the Galloway Forest Park – 300 sq miles of lush green forest, heather-clad hills and tranquil valleys that are home to an amazing variety of wildlife. The park is also one of the greatest spots in the UK to do some stargazing with the naked eye, as it is the first Dark Sky Park in the UK and one of only three in Europe, where you can see the amazing sight of 7,000 twinkling stars without a telescope. The park is also home to two of the internationally renowned 7stanes mountain biking centres, Glentrool and Kirroughtree. Explore miles and miles of the Solway Coast to find sandy, white beaches, perfect for a picnic or a refreshing stroll on a quiet evening while you soak up the stunning landscapes, rays of sunshine and feeling of peace and tranquillity.

At the far west of the shoreline, you’ll discover the most southerly point in Scotland, the Mull of Galloway on the Rhins peninsula. With its amazing 260ft cliffs and spectacular seascapes and sunsets, this is an amazing place for a walk or just to sit and watch the wildlife. Take in the views from this spot of all four kingdoms – the Galloway Hills and western islands of Scotland, the Isle of Man, the Cumbrian Fells in England and the coastline of Northern Ireland. In spring and summer, you can experience the frantic activity of a large cliff colony of seabirds including black guillemots, kittiwakes and maybe a puffin or two. A selection of peaceful activities is on offer in the beautiful countryside of Dumfries & Galloway. Enjoy a gentle family ride at one of the excellent 7stanes mountain biking centres and on cycle paths or sit by the river banks and indulge in a spot of fishing. Follow one of the many miles of walking routes or take part in a group walk with one of the region’s four walking festivals in May, August or October.

A world of culture inspired by history With connections to the beginning of Scottish Christianity, famous poet Robert Burns, and a whole town dedicated to local artists, Dumfries & Galloway demonstrates its significance in history and creativity wherever you go. Uncover the historic tales of how this region played a big part in the story of Scotland. See the work of artists such as the Glasgow Boys in Kirkcudbright or step inside some of the fascinating heritage sites to hear the history of figures including Robert the Bruce and Lady Devorgilla. With so much to inspire, from a colourful history to stunning landscapes, it’s not surprising to learn that Dumfries & Galloway is home to so many artists and craftsmen. Immerse yourself in a world of creativity in the Artists’ Town of Kirkcudbright, a pretty harbour town and a well-known haven for artists which boasts many galleries, workshops, studios and special events. The historic town of Dumfries has a long and varied history with many renowned characters, most notably Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns. During the last years of his life in Dumfries he produced work which is still heard, read and discussed across the world. Visit the various museums and centres, including his former house, which now serves as a dedicated museum where you can see the desk and chair where he sat to write 200 years ago.

Another famous figure is Robert the Bruce – it was in Dumfries that he became King of Scotland after murdering John Comyn, his chief rival for the throne, in the town’s Greyfriars monastery in 1306. You can visit the sites of his first victories in battle at Glentrool and Raploch Moss and see the cave near Kirkpatrick Fleming where legend says that in 1307 after defeat, he went into hiding for three months and was inspired back into battle by a spider’s relentless effort to spin its web. 01

Discover more of Dumfries & Galloway’s turbulent past by visiting the region’s castles. Britain’s only triangular-shaped castle, Caerlaverock, has a dramatic past as has Threave Castle, once owned by Archibald the Grim. But the history books aren’t just filled with battles – the region is also home to Sweetheart Abbey, which was built by Lady Devorgilla in memory of her husband, and is thought to have inspired the word ‘sweetheart’. The small town of Whithorn in the west of the region has many connections with the beginning of Christianity in Scotland. Bishop and missionary St Ninian is believed to have trained in Rome before founding the first Christian church in Whithorn in the fifth century. Visit Whithorn Priory Museum, which houses a collection of ancient stones explaining the tale, and St Ninian’s Chapel, on the coast near the Isle of Whithorn.

01 St Ninian’s Cave, near Whithorn. 02 Bruce’s Stone, Galloway Forest Park. 03 Take the ferry to Threave Castle, Castle Douglas.

Venture into the attractions and visitor centres of Dumfries & Galloway and you’ll find an exciting array of things to see and do. From animal parks for younger children to museums full of fascinating artefacts and shiny gemstones, there are a variety of places to choose from. You’ll also discover a region blessed with a rich climate, which means it boasts some of the most unusual gardens in the country. Thanks to its location on the glorious south west coast of Scotland, which is blessed by the Gulf Stream, Dumfries & Galloway has some of the best gardens in Scotland. This region is the perfect place for exotic plants, such as the Cabbage Palm and Gunnera Bog, and for flora that’s more recognisably Scottish. Across the region there are over 20 specialist gardens and nurseries, including the seasonally inspiring gardens at Threave House and Estate, west of Castle Douglas, which have been created over the years by students of the National Trust for Scotland’s School of Practical Gardening. A trip to Japan during 1893/94 inspired Scottish artist Edward Hornel to develop part of Broughton House Garden, in Kirkcudbright, in a Japanese style with a mix of formal and relaxed planting. On the south western tip of the region, 14 miles south of Stranraer, is Logan Botanic Garden, which is unrivalled as the country’s most exotic garden. Celebrate the beauty of the written word in Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town, where at any one time there are around 250,000 books for sale. Wigtown is full of literary surprises, especially in autumn when the Wigtown Book Festival takes place from September to October.

04

Gretna Green is one of Scotland’s border villages and is known worldwide for the weddings that have taken place there. Due to the more relaxed marriage laws in Scotland, many couples made their way up north to tie the knot. Visit the Gretna Green Famous Blacksmiths Shop with the cottage and workshop which remains virtually untouched since days gone by, and contains a fascinating collection of memorabilia and artefacts. Families can enjoy many great days out in Dumfries & Galloway at a range of attractions from outdoor play areas to wildlife parks. At Cream o’ Galloway you can see how their award-winning delicious ice cream is created and also enjoy the two indoor play areas, adventure playground and pedal karts for children and adults alike. You can hire a bike, take a quiet walk along one of the farm’s nature trails or for a more thrilling adventure, try the zip wire or the down the hatch slide. The region has a number of exciting museums on a fascinating variety of subjects. Practical information Now is the time to choose your holiday accommodation This guide has been split into five sections for the following accommodation categories: • Hotels and Inns • Guest Houses and B&Bs • Self Catering • Camping and Caravan Parks • Hostels/Activity Accommodation Establishments are listed within these sections in alphabetical order by location and then by business name. Each entry has a map reference (see example) relating to the map which appears on page 57 of this guide. The map is helpful if you don’t know where a particular town is in relation to the area that interests you. Where establishments are listed as ‘By’ a city, town or village it is wise to check the exact location online and with the operator before making your journey. Some listings have a distance beside the location; this indicates the approximate road distance in miles from the location. These mileages are voluntary provided by the businesses themselves. Booking Accepting accommodation by telephone or in writing means you have entered into a legally binding contract with the proprietor of the establishment. If you cancel or fail to take up that accommodation, for whatever reason, the proprietor generally has the right to ask for compensation. You should always check the cancellation terms in advance and, if you must cancel a booking, advise the management immediately. Online bookings are also subject to terms and conditions, please check direct with the provider for these. Insurance and cancellations Should you have to cancel for any reason, it is reassuring to know that you can be insured against any compensation claim. Please ensure you take out cancellation insurance prior to your trip.

Pricing The prices of accommodation, services and facilities stated in this guide are based on information received from the relevant advertisers. Please note that prices include VAT where applicable and are for your guidance only (VAT as at December 2012). Please check prices when you book accommodation and confirm exactly what the quoted price includes. Smoking The majority of Scotland’s indoor public places, including pubs, restaurants and cafés, are smokefree by law, creating a healthier and fresher environment for residents and visitors to our beautiful country. Hotels, B&Bs and guest houses are also smoke-free but can designate bedrooms where guests can smoke, if they wish to do so. To check the availability of such bedrooms, please check with the establishment directly when booking. For further information, visit www.clearingtheairscotland.com

ü Look out for the short breaks symbol Dumfries & Galloway offers a fabulous range of quality assured accommodation as listed on pages 20-51. Establishments which display the above symbol offer short breaks. Contact them direct for current special offers or to make a booking.

to educate and inform all our customers about the requirements under the law. We have encouraged all our business customers to use the assistance dog symbol in order to comply with law, or make it clear in a statement that they welcome all assistance dogs. It is always advisable to check with each establishment prior to booking.

v Hearing Loop Induction loop and infrared systems help people with hearing loss hear more clearly by reducing the effect of background noise. When a building has been fitted with a loop or infrared system, you will usually find this mentioned in their adverts, newsletters and at the entrance to the building. Informative signs and symbols should be displayed such as the loop sign above, it is always worth asking if it is not obvious. Please note this icon is not verified by VisitScotland Quality and Standards Department. , Dogs Welcome Dogs are welcome to this establishment, on the understanding that they are on their leash and are kept under control. You may have to check with each establishment whether there are restricted areas for your dog. Please note this icon is not verified by VisitScotland Quality and Standards Department.

E

Assistance Dogs The new Equality Act 2010 protects anybody who has or has had a disability and people who experience discrimination because they are linked or associated with a disabled person. In respect of assistance dogs the law quite clearly states that to refuse admission to a registered assistance dog is now unlawful and constitutes discrimination under the Equality Act 2012 under three possible categories: 1: discrimination arising from a disability; 2: indirect discrimination and 3: disability harassment. VisitScotland is committed to equality of opportunity and is working through its Accessible Tourism Project

Further information For further information either visit www.visitscotland.com or contact the accommodation provider directly.

Balcary Bay Hotel

Balcary Bay Country House Hotel takes its name from the beautiful bay on which it stands, in an area of Galloway that is romantic in its isolation, and which was once full of intrigue. Heston Isle, the hide-out of 17th century smugglers, fronts the hotel’s view across the Solway coast, and rising majestic peaks of the Cumbria Lake District. Traditional Scottish hospitality can be found within the intimacy of a family-run hotel.
