Experience South Australia

South Australia has always been a bit off the beaten track for New Zealanders, who generally prefer to stick to Australia’s East Coast. In fact, a direct flight from Auckland is only 50 minutes longer than flying to Melbourne, and it’s well worth the extra time in the air. Adelaide seems to run at a different pace to its easterly cousins; maybe that’s because it’s literally hemmed in by world-famous wine regions. Wine-making began here in 1841, and today there are nine distinct wine regions within a 1 ½ hour drive of Adelaide. Beyond the city you’ll also find vast landscapes, dazzling beaches, varied wildlife and friendly locals who always have time for a chat – little wonder given that the population of South Australia accounts for less than 8% of the total population of Australia. That’s not to say the state is unpopular: evidence of human habitation dates back over 20,000 years, and the locals are proud of the fact that theirs is a freely-settled, rather than convict-settled, province – unique in Australia. The weather may be another factor in the leisurely pace enjoyed by South Australians. The state encompasses some of the driest parts of the continent, and in the Outback, summertime daily maximums of around 38°C are common. Another draw card is the vast Murray River, an hour’s drive from Adelaide. Hire a houseboat, pick up a few bottles of local wine, stock up on local produce and pack your cossie and you’ve got all the elements of a perfect South Australian holiday!

Adelaide An early morning walk through the parkland that lines the River Torrens is the perfect way to appreciate this cosmopolitan city. Nearby North Terrace is the cultural centre of the city with the National Wine Centre and the South Australian Museum. Just around the corner is the renowned Adelaide Zoo and home to over 1,800 animals including such diverse species as the giant panda and the iconic bluetongued lizard. A five-minute walk from the water’s edge is Rundle Mall, a vast outdoor pedestrian mall with over 800 shops. It’s also a great place to watch the world go by – have breakfast at one of the outdoor cafés before embarking on a marathon bout of shopping. Adelaide is one of those rare cities that’s still small enough for everything to be “twenty minutes away” – whether you prefer to jump on a tram to Glenelg Beach or drive out to the Adelaide Hills to explore pretty German-influenced Hahndorf.

Our favourite things to see & do •

ADELAIDE CENTRAL MARKET – Buzzing with life and colour all year round this is a great place to wander sampling the freshest of local ingredients. There’s a huge range of fresh food, all under one roof and surrounded by some great cafés. The market is open Tue – Sat.

KANGAROO ISLAND – One of the best places in Australia to see native animals in the wild. You may find kangaroos, koalas, platypus and sea lions. It has pristine beaches, dramatic coastal scenery and fresh seafood, and is a 30 minute flight or two hours drive and a short ferry ride south of Adelaide.

BEACHES – Glenelg, Henley and Semaphore are some of the most popular, catch the tram from the city to historic Glenelg (our favourite) just 12 kilometres from the city centre, or if you don’t mind travelling a bit further the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula is just 45 mins from the CBD.

WINE – You can’t come to Adelaide without sampling the superb wine. There are household names like Penfolds, Wolf Blass and Jacob’s Creek plus countless boutique estates. There’s the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale all just an easy drive away, then Coonawarra four hours drive south.

Tour the cellar do Adelaide Hills & ors of the Barossa, McLaren Vale.

The Murray River The mighty Murray River carves its way some 650 kilometres through South Australia before it enters the Southern Ocean at Goolwa on the Fleurieu Peninsula. With more than 40 National Parks located along the river, the region is rich in wildlife with many species of birds, fish and native animals. The golden age of the paddle steamer, when there were dozens plying the waters of the Murray carrying passengers and goods, have long departed, but there are still a few grand old ladies on the water and they’re a great way to absorb the landscape and history of this region. Spend some time exploring the Riverland region’s orchards and wineries; it produces almost all of Australia’s citrus fruit and stonefruit. It’s also a great family destination; hire a houseboat and explore the river, or just find a favourite sandy beach on the riverbank and spend a few lazy days fishing, swimming, canoeing and waterskiing.

Captain Cook Murray River Cruises 3, 4 or 7 nights There’s no better way to see the Murray River and a slice of this hauntingly beautiful and dramatic landscape, it’s unique flora and fauna, and the rich legacy of old riverside ports and indigenous culture close up than to drift unhurried and quietly on the paddle-wheeler PS Murray Princess. Whether you choose a three night introductory cruise or a full seven-night, 320 kilometre journey, a cruise aboard the PS Murray Princess is truly memorable. The boat is a modern version of the historic paddle steamers so you’ll get to enjoy the romance of travelling by paddle steamer, but still have plenty of modern comforts like spa, sauna and speedboat. Cruises depart from Mannum, birthplace of the Murray River trade, on Mondays or Fridays.

Discovery Cruise Day 1: Embark Head downriver as you cruise under floodlight to the overnight mooring at Mundarra – you may see nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank. Watch for grey kangaroos, hairy-nosed wombats, longnecked tortoises and many other species. Day 2: Murray River In 1879 the first bridge to span the Murray River was built at Edwards Crossing, which became the township of Murray Bridge. Join a tour of the town’s historic landmarks. In the afternoon begin the journey upriver, mooring at Craignook overnight. Day 3: Murray River All ashore for a nature walk where your guide will share the secrets of the local flora and fauna before the Murray Princess departs for the big river gorges and 90 metre cliffs of the upper river. At the 205km mark, turn and head downriver to River View Lodge. Here join a discovery vessel for a small boat tour exploring the river close up – the birdlife is amazing. Day 4: Disembark After breakfast, arrive at Mannum where the cruise ends or you can join the optional Barossa Valley Tour (additional cost). Flinders & The Outback South Australia’s Outback is about as far removed from city life as you can get, and yet it’s surprisingly accessible. Hire a car and within four hours you can be exploring this incredible destination. The rugged mountain ranges, deep gorges and varied wildlife of the Flinders Ranges create a photogenic landscape, but the area is also prized for its ancient Aboriginal rock art and fossils. If you’ve got the time, it’s well worth venturing further into the Outback and discovering the more out of the way gems – the deep Outback is home to vast salt pans, natural thermal springs and desert trails where you’ll encounter varied wildlife and interesting locals. Your biggest surprise may be what appears on your plate at mealtimes. Delicacies like quandongs (sometime described as a native peach), Bundaleer wine (produced in the southern Flinders Ranges) and bush honey all feature in local cuisine.

Rawnsley Park Station

Desert Cave Hotel

There’s nothing quite like an outback sunset, and this sheep station has seen plenty. Whether you opt for a camping experience or a private eco-villa, it’s a great base for 4WD tours, scenic flights or just enjoying the scenery. With an abundance of Australian native wildlife and flora, Rawnsley Park Station is ideally situated for exploring South Australia’s remarkable Flinders Ranges. A great way to experience the Outback is from camelback where you can see Kookaburras fishing in waterholes and plenty of kangaroos and wallabies amongst amazing views.

For the ultimate Coober Pedy experience, spend a night underground in one of the cool, quiet rooms that make up the Desert Cave Hotel. If you prefer to be able to see the stars, they also have rooms above ground. The location of this hotel allows you to experience the underground shops and bar as well as the usual hotel services. Experience Tasmania

Australia’s island state of Tasmania is best known for its native wildlife, intriguing history and natural beauty, but the incredible local produce is another highlight. From wine to strawberries, cheese to seafood, you’ll find artisan producers around every corner and farmers’ markets in many towns. Tasmania is easily accessible; airports at Hobart and Launceston connect to the mainland, or you can take the overnight Spirit of Tasmania passenger and car ferry from Melbourne to Devonport. At about half the size of the North Island of New Zealand, Tasmania is an ideal self drive destination. We recommend you allow at least a week to ensure that you have enough time to take in all those towering forests, deserted beaches, historic sites, beautiful mountains and meet the Tasmanian wildlife – perhaps even the iconic Tasmanian devil. Kayaking, white water rafting and hiking are all popular ways to get out and experience the landscape up close, plus the cities are small enough that you can easily explore them on foot, and historic sites like Port Arthur are made for walking tours. There are plenty of other options for the less energetic too: take a ride on a scenic railway through a spectacular rainforest gorge, join a cruise on a mirror-calm river, soar over mountains and beaches in a helicopter or go off-road on a guided four-wheel drive tour. Tasmania has also been thrust onto the international art scene with the addition of MONA, the world class art Museum in Hobart which is a must see. 13

Coral Coast Imagine swimming in water so warm and clear it’s as though you’re floating in space. Suddenly a vast shape looms out of the blue depths, and your heart starts to pound. It’s what you came here to see, but now that it’s actually happening, it seems completely surreal. Swimming alongside a whale shark measuring as much as 12 metres in length is one of those experiences that will remain with you for the rest of your life, but it’s just one highlight on offer during your stay on Western Australia’s Coral Coast. Marine life at various times of the year can include humpback whales, manta rays, turtles, dugong, orca, dolphins...plus the fish and coral that live here year round. On dry land you’ll find kilometres of white sandy beaches, limestone towers, wildflower fields, sandstone gorges – it’s a photographer’s dream. Better yet, the weather is superb year round, so it’s always a great time to visit.

Broome & Kimberley Walk for kilometres along white sand beaches, dip your toes in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, pick out a locally grown South Sea pearl or a locally mined diamond and soak up the colourful, relaxed vibe. All of this is possible in Broome, gateway to the Kimberley and just a two and a half hour flight from Perth. Broome was founded in the late 1880’s as a pearling port and today it’s still home to a thriving pearling industry, but there’s so much more on offer. It’s a great place for a relaxing beach holiday but you’d be mad not to take in some of the other highlights, including the Kimberley, which is one of the world’s last remaining true wilderness areas. Most people agree that the dry season is the best time to visit – it’s easy to get around and there’s plenty happening, but some prefer the wet season – the more remote areas may be inaccessible but there are far fewer tourists.

Experience Northern Territory

© Tourism NT

Inhabiting much of Australia’s central mainland and central northern regions, Northern Territory is one of the last remaining genuine `Outback’ destinations in Australia. With so many natural wonders, ancient history, rich culture and unique wildlife to explore, a holiday to the Northern Territory can be as diverse as the region itself. Today, with its World Heritage-listed sites like Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and Kakadu National Park, along with a huge number of other natural attractions, there are plenty of places to lose yourself and become immersed in your surroundings. With its long history of Aboriginal settlement you’ll find plenty of Indigenous culture on display – everything from ancient rock art and cultural centres to the sacred and iconic Uluru. Arnhem Land, to the east of Darwin, is one of the largest Aboriginal reserves in Australia and a bastion of Aboriginal culture – rock art, bark paintings and the home of the didgeridoo. The Top End of the Territory has a tropical climate: Darwin experiences a distinct `wet’ and `dry’ season with temperatures rarely exceeding 32 degrees during both seasons. Dry season is normally from May-October with comfortable all day temperatures to enjoy the outdoors. Wet season from November-April is a mixture of amazing storms, rain and spectacular sunsets. If you’re headed for the aptly-named Red Centre, you’ll experience only a smattering of rain if any, and temperatures in excess of 35°C in the summer but a more bearable 20°C in the winter.

Red Centre Nothing can prepare you for the sheer scale of the World Heritage-listed sandstone rock formation that is Uluru. The local Aboriginal people request that you do not climb the rock, but there are plenty of other ways to enjoy it – from the air, from the back of a camel or as the backdrop for a candlelit dinner under the stars. Perhaps just as spectacular as Uluru, the Olgas (also know as Kata Tjuta) are a group of dome-shaped rocks 30 kilometres west of their more famous cousin. The main walking track, which takes you through the provocatively named Valley of the Winds, is a 7.4 kilometre loop trail. Alice Springs is very close to the geographical centre of Australia, and is a popular holiday destination in itself. While you’re in town, call in to the Alice Springs Desert Park – it’s a great place to meet some of the more exotic-sounding locals, such as the burrowing frog, bilby and ghost bat.

Touring by Rental Car Choosing your Rental Car Take into consideration the size of the vehicle you require. If the vehicle is to be used for day touring from a central base and not for transporting your luggage, a smaller vehicle will be suitable. However, if you’re going to be covering long distances then a 2 litre for two adults would be more suitable. We suggest you book your car before leaving home as this will save money and ensure that you get the car of your choice – there is a huge range of car types on offer from economy vehicles to SUVs and mini buses.
