NaRaYa’s Fabric Bag known by the Japanese as “the Ribbon bag” and by the Chinese as “Mangu pao”, is one of the brand’s most popular items. With its unique craftsmanship and originality, NaRaYa has quickly become a favorite brand for both tourists and Thai locals. The business began when a Greek businessman, Mr. Vassilios Lathouras, met a Chinese-Thai lady, Ms. Wasna Lathouras. Together they started NaRaYa and began producing the unique fabric bags and accessories for which the brand has now become famous. After founding NaRaYa, Mrs. Wasna whose skills in fashion and beauty were apparent, became the key person behind the company’s success. Constantly seeking to innovate the NaRaYa collection, Mrs. Wasna continues to guide a creative process that ensures a constant flow of fresh and exciting products. The name NaRaYa comes from the Hindu god Phra Narai, who is more commonly known as Vishnu-the supreme god of Hinduism. The name was chosen for its auspicious meaning as well as for its simple pronunciation. NaRaYa started with less than 20 sewing machines and sold products out of a 4 square-meter booth in the basement of Narayana Phand Bazaar. Today, NaRaYa is headquartered in a state-of-the-art facility in Bangkok, employing over 3,500 people on its own payroll, and an additional 4,000 people through its outsourced production activities. These goods, produced in Thai countryside, are sold in NaRaYa outlets throughout Asia, Europe and Middle East. How did NaRaYa grow so fast in a market rife with competition? By never straying from its original concept of producing a diverse range of top-quality products at prices that ensure everyone is welcome. NaRaYa’s store locations have always been a key part of its success. All NaRaYa stores are centrally located close to

major shopping areas and are decorated in bright, welcoming colors. Mr. Vassilios and Mrs. Wasna quickly realized that only by using the best quality materials within an evolving and diverse product range could they guarantee happy customers who would look forward to their next return. This is one of the key elements NaRaYa Central World that makes NaRaYa stand out from the rest. The company made it a priority to initiate programs in Thai villages to train local families and build on their expertise in handicraft work. The training programs were developed in conjunction with quality control processes to create world class products at very attractive prices. The 4,000 villagers to whom NaRaYa outsources its production all undergo training and are equipped with the necessary skills for them to earn a healthy living enabling them to put food on the table and educate their children. Through NaRaYa’s contribution, generations of families are today enjoying better lives and increased living standards for higher than when they were farmers. By the end of 2013, NaRaYa plans to thank its customers by launching an enhanced store concept with an ever greater range of unique products.

As we enter the high season starting this month, THAI is increasing the frequency of flights from Bangkok to popular destinations in Japan such as Sapporo – from four to seven weekly flights – and Tokyo (Narita Airport) – two flights daily with the Airbus A380-800 – in order to meet with high passenger demand. I’m also pleased to announce that THAI Smile will operate to two new destinations in China – to Chongqing and Changsha. Both cities have shown high growth potential and market demand, and we expect these two new routes to be popular in both directions. Our continued expansion to new destinations and increase in flight frequencies coincide perfectly with this month’s delivery of four new aircraft. THAI is excited to be receiving our fifth Airbus A380-800 aircraft for increased operations on the route between Bangkok and Tokyo (Narita), two Airbus A320-200 aircraft to join the THAI Smile fleet, and one Boeing B777-300ER aircraft for regional and international routes. These new aircraft are part of the company’s strategy in meeting expected growth in air travel. Looking ahead, next month is the dazzling Loy Krathong Festival, which takes place on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, when Thais throughout the country float candle-lit, lotus-shaped vessels to pay respect to the Goddess of Water. All visitors are welcome to join the festivities or watch the myriad of glittering floats along the rivers and canals. Those who have not yet planned your itinerary, please do not miss this colourful and glamorous festivity. It’s the perfect location to celebrate life’s happy moments. You improved a lot this year with podiums in Bahrain and Germany, but are still a long way behind your teammate Kimi Räikkönen on points. How are you feeling about this season so far, given how tough last year was? That said, in F1 there are a lot of very competitive drivers trying for the same goal, so it certainly won’t be easy. How will you celebrate when you take your first win? It will be a very happy Romain Grosjean you will see if I take my first Grand Prix win this year. I haven’t made any plans on how I would celebrate, but I’m sure I’ll have many ideas if I do reach the top step.

How tough a teammate is Kimi? Where do you need to improve to try and beat him this year? I just need to be in front of him all the time! It’s true that he is a very tough teammate and those who see a laidback person outside of the car don’t realise how motivated he is. He has the benefit of so much experience, but that is good as there’s always something I can learn from him. To beat him you need to be fast and consistent and that’s my target for the rest of the season in any case. You won last year’s Race of Champions, held at Bangkok’s Rajamangala Stadium. That was a great achievement, given the talent

Romain Grosjean is living the dream, racing alongside Kimi Räikkönen on the Lotus F1 team. We chat with the 27-year-old Frenchman about winning in the heat of Bangkok and chilling out away from the intensity of Formula One

and experience of the other drivers. What are your thoughts on the event and your win? The event is fantastic and it’s certainly not as easy as it looks on television! Even though we pretend it’s all for fun, we’re all very competitive so everyone is trying very hard to do their best. The track is tiny for the cars we drive around it, and that’s one of the challenges as you have to be so precise on a circuit that is very short and tight. It’s a totally different experience to anything else you try in motorsport. Did you enjoy your time in Bangkok? What do you like about Thailand? It seems like an exciting place with lots of lovely people. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to spend much time exploring Bangkok while I was there for the Race of Champions, but I

certainly want to visit again and get to know the country better. You do a lot of travel every year, crossing the globe for 19 GPs and various other things. What items do you pack to make sure you’re relaxed when jetting around? I definitely like my gadgets, so I’ve always got the latest smartphone so I can keep up to date with my friends and family.

these days, more travellers are finding pleasure in joining social responsibility programmes – the perfect combination of relaxing, making new friends and giving back to a local community. “Voluntourism” holidays are gaining popularity in thailand – below are personal accounts of three voluntourism experiences in the Kingdom.

i’m spending a week volunteering at the Elephant Nature park (ENp) just north of Chiang Mai, and the experience has changed me in ways that i never thought possible. as volunteers we have the opportunity to prepare the elephants’ food, help bathe them, clean out their mud pit and any other chores that need to be done around ENp. it’s tough work, especially in the thai heat, but it’s all for the benefit of the elephants, which makes the work easier somehow. Cleaning out the excess water from the mud pit where the elephants play and cool off is by far the dirtiest job. the mud is thick and wading into the centre without falling becomes an impossible task. Bailing out the water seems endless and soon a bucket of muddy water mistakenly hits another volunteer. once that happens it’s an all-out war, and soon we’re all covered in mud. Everyone is laughing, and nobody seems to care what else might be in the pit aside from mud and water. Volunteering at ENp can be fun, despite all the hard work, but

when we’re invited to watch a video about elephant tourism in thailand each of us feels sick to our stomachs. the video is gruesome, and many volunteers need to leave the room before it’s over. the torture that these poor animals endure is unthinkable. the hook that is used to break an elephant’s spirit during training becomes an unwelcome trigger, and after i’ve left ENp and come across elephants – adults and babies – with chains around their legs, and a man holding a hook and offering elephant rides, my stomach convulses, tears well up in my eyes, and i have go find a way to calm down and breathe. Riding an elephant in thailand is on the top of many travellers’ bucket lists (it was on mine for years), but what they might not understand is the torture these animals endure at a very young age to “train” them for these tourist traps. the “training” is meant to break a baby elephant’s spirit so it no longer recognises its own mother. all of the elephants at Elephant Nature park (with the exception of a couple babies born this past year) have a tortured past, and it’s enough to break any animal-lover’s heart. taking time to volunteer while travelling can be a life changing experience, not just for you, but for the organisation you are volunteering with. look into voluntourism opportunities, go with an open mind, and leave with a sense of pride knowing you’ve helped to make the world a better place.

The Little Big Project / words Richard Brownsdon

on 18 July 2013, i found out that my team had won “the little Big project”, and that after our memorable, action-packed two-week volunteer experience in phuket, we had received over one million votes on our blog to promote ecotourism in thailand. let’s go back to the beginning. the little Big project is a competition run by the tourism authority of thailand to inspire worldwide travellers to take volunteer vacations in thailand. From over 4,500 entries to the little Big project, i was one of five international finalists. We were paired up with five thai finalists, and then sent off in teams of two to work on projects all around the country. We were to share our experiences online, and get our friends and family to vote on the blogs they liked best. the team with the most votes won Us$5,000 for their host project to continue its work, so of course, our host was very happy when we won!

My team’s project host was openmind projects, a leading responsible volunteer and ecotourism operator. We aimed to rehabilitate phuket’s marine ecosystems while creating awareness of the importance to preserve these ecosystems. Much of our time was spent with marine park rangers – the men and women who work tirelessly to protect thailand’s beautiful and delicate marine ecosystems. We trained with them, ate with them and got very wet with them. We learnt everything from surveying beach habitats and how to identify different types of turtles, to scuba diving and checking coral reefs and protected underwater areas. one day was spent with a community-led ecotourism operator. the locals showed us around the natural environment they live in and what they are doing to preserve it. We gave them a hand releasing fish and planting new mangrove trees. We had a bit of fun too, on a beautiful kayaking expedition between the mangroves. prior to the little Big project, i already had a strong interest in ecotourism, and i had travelled and volunteered before. When volunteer tourism – or “voluntourism” – is done in a responsible way, it can really make a difference to both the community you visit and to your own personal development. For me, lasting memories come from spending time with the people who live in the communities i’m visiting. i’ve made lifelong friends through my volunteer experiences. 

on my travels to thailand, i’ve noticed the huge number of stray dogs that roam the streets, many of them bonethin, mangy and pathetic looking. animal sterilisation isn’t common here. Many are abandoned at temples – a phenomenon typical around the country, as locals believe the monks will feed and take care of the dogs. But the Buddhist monks, who have renounced worldly possessions and depend on alms themselves, have little resources to care for the many dogs who make the temples their homes. in Chiang Mai, an organisation called Care for Dogs (CFD) provides shelter, food, medical care and the ever-important sterilisation to thousands of stray dogs each year. CFD is open to people from all walks of life who want to work directly with the dogs at the shelter or local temples, at adoption fairs or behind the scenes

in the office. i had the chance to visit CFD in November 2010, and while i was there, i was greeted by the most fantastic canine grins i’ve ever seen. there was a lot of safely fencedin space for the dogs to run around and play, as well as a veterinary clinic and shelter area. i was immediately covered in dogs (and their slobber) as they greeted me as a new playmate. i spent the morning just playing with the dogs, and then took some of the newer charges on leash walks through the adjoining forest trails. i was also given a tour of the clinic, where i met one poor dog with huge tumours and some of the most horrificlooking sores all over his body. he was about to undergo treatment, and i have since seen the amazing recoveries the animals have made under CFD’s care. sometimes, the healthy and happy mutts are barely recognisable weeks later. CFD works hard to get as many animals adopted as possible – this year, it hopes to re-home 200 dogs and cats.

i was introduced to CFD through my friend Nola lee Kelsey, an american now living in Chiang Mai and with whom i was staying. Nola is the author of numerous books about volunteering, animals and wildlife conservation, as well as a long-time supporter of Care For Dogs. she discovered the temple dogs years ago, when she was visiting Wat Chedi luang. During a ferocious rainstorm, she ended up seeking shelter in a gazebo full of Buddha sculptures... and a steady stream of stray dogs. “it was one of the most magical days of photography that i have ever experienced,” she recalls. it struck Nola that she was seeing a thailand many travellers don’t see. the experience led her to discover and begin volunteering at CFD. “the dogs at the shelter still possess honest warmth and desire for human affection that so endears canines to people’s hearts. Each pup at CFD is a gem, just waiting to be discovered.”

Beijingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Summer Palace is more than just an exquisite example of imperial landscaping and architecture. The former seat of power and its surrounding gardens are living testaments to Chinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s past prowess and boast a delicacy and intimacy that has stood the test of time / words Nick Walton / photos Rob Whitworth

t’s early morning in Beijing, and far from the traffic jams and skyscrapers for which the chinese capital has become synonymous, there is a serenity and a tranquility that has prevailed for centuries. in the grounds of the summer Palace, china’s largest and most complete royal park, the troubles of the modern world are far away. in the shortening shadows of an ornate terrace painted in bright red and green hues, a clutch of elderly women follow the rhythmic, dance-like steps of tai chi to a soundtrack of scratchy chinese opera piped in from a portable iPod dock. dressed in track suits against the slight chill in the air, many of the women are armed with plastic swords crafted from gold plastic in the traditional imperial style, the faux weapons dazzling in the morning sun. others are armed with fans that they flick and flare in unison. combined with the regal green of the Kunming Lake beyond and the bird song that manages to drown out the horns of the city outside, the dancers make for a mesmerising sight, and one every new visitor to Beijing should experience for themselves. The summer Palace or Yi He Yuan, literally translated as the Gardens of Nurtured Harmony, is much more than just a former seat of power. The sprawling 2.9-square-kilometre park, three quarters of which is water, is a time capsule around which modern Beijing swirls and eddies. Protected as a UNesco World Heritage site and as an official chinese heritage attraction, the park’s time-weathered pavilions, tranquil lakes and rich history are a vital part of the national pre-communist identity; a masterpiece of chinese landscape art that blooms in its own interpretation with each spring. “There really is no place quite like the summer Palace gardens,” says Kathy Lam, a Hong Kong-born tour guide i meet at the park’s east Palace Gate while waiting for her first group of the day – this time retirees from the chinese city of Yangzhou. “so few cities have the depth of history that Beijing does and sometimes we take it for granted. in this park we have a living, breathing piece of that history that anyone, from locals to foreigners, can enjoy.” Her favourite corner of the expansive park is the sea of Wisdom Temple, with its 1,000 over terracotta

Buddha statues, located at the summit of Longevity Hill, the centrepiece of the gardens. “if you can get up there early enough it can be so peaceful,” says Lam. “You can really forget you’re in a city of millions.” Like many political and religious complexes in china, the gardens of the summer Palace have gone through their own transformations. on the hill on which the sea of Wisdom Temple now stands, emperor Wanyan Liang of the Jin dynasty (1115–1234) first built his palace, after moving the capital of his kingdom to what is now modernday Beijing. The hill was suitably named Gold Mountain, until a jar

filled with treasure was reportedly found on the site and the hill was given the rather prosaic name Jug Hill under the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368). The Qianlong emperor of the Qing dynasty (1644–1912) gave Longevity Hill its present name in honour of his mother’s 60th birthday, and so it has stayed, balancing out one end of the park from the waters of Kunming Lake at the other. in fact, one thing that makes the summer Palace gardens so interesting is how entwined all the buildings, temples, shrines, palaces and gardens are. Kunming Lake is entirely manmade, and it was an extension of an

existing body of water that was reshaped to look more like the iconic West Lake, located outside Hangzhou. The soil from the earthworks was used to make Longevity Hill even grander. one of the most photographed structures in the gardens, the Long corridor or chang Lang, was said to have been built for the Qianlong emperor’s mother, the empress dowager chongqing, so that she could view the snow and rain on the lake without catching a chill. The Qianlong emperor extended the waterway to make Kunming Lake, and so that his mother could enjoy his handy work, he created the beautifully ornate 700-metre-long corridor that stretches between Longevity Hill – then named Wanshou Mountain – and the lake shore. The corridor – which is richly decorated with more than 10,000 paintings portraying the empress’ favourite stories – is now popular with amateur photographers, and i watch one girl, dressed to the nines despite the early hour, patiently posing for her boyfriend as he seeks to capture her as a modern-day empress. it’s said that women have influenced the development of the summer Palace far more than the kings who lived in its regal halls. one of the most influential characters was the formidable empress dowager cixi. A former concubine to the emperor Xianfeng, she was mother of his son and heir, and is believed to have heavily influenced the Qing dynasty during her unofficial 47 years in power. A powerful advocate for the gardens, she allegedly took money earmarked for the chinese navy to restore the gardens to their regal splendour, including the addition of an ornate 36-metre-long, double-decker

marble boat, located at the end of the Long corridor. Many historians believe her devotion to the gardens and the diversion of military funds cost china the First sino-Japanese War, which took place just six years after the restoration works. However, her devotion is evident in the park’s splendid buildings, ornate walls and intimate temples. Many of those regal spaces dot Longevity Hill, including the cloud dispelling Hall, the Tower of Buddhist incense, and tour guide Kathy’s favourite, the sea of Wisdom Temple. The cloud dispelling Hall is at the centre of this ensemble of throne rooms, shrines and reception areas. The complex was burnt down by British and French troops in 1860 but was lovingly restored by the empress dowager cixi in 1886. The hall became known as the Birthday Hall, and officials would arrive to worship and pay respects to the empress on her birthday, which she celebrated at the summer Palace while escaping

Beijing’s summer heat. The hall now boasts some of the opulent gifts bestowed on the empress on her birthdays past. Nearby the empress dowager cixi would give audience to visiting officials in the ren shou dian, the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity. Today, visitors to the hall can still see the original furnishings, including her red sandalwood throne carved with nine writhing dragons. When she wasn’t receiving nobles in the hall, the empress could sometimes be found playing Guanyin, the goddess of mercy, at the grand theatre of the Palace of virtue and Harmony, or de He Yuan. it’s said the windows would be opened so that the music from the plays performed there could reach the Jade Waves Palace, where the emperor Guangxu was kept under house arrest for ten years by cixi for supporting political reform. outside the entrance of the summer Palace, tourists can buy hats and pose as a chinese monarch, while inside, as the sun rises above the ancient halls and shimmers off the water, wizened old men dip paint brushes in the lake and paint the empress’ favourite poems on the stone walkway, only to watch the characters evaporate within minutes. Fortunately, because of the beautiful palace and gardens that were so close to her heart, the memory of this dynamic leader will remain far longer. THAI operates daily ﬂights to Beijing. The Sierra Nevada mountain range: American wilderness at its best

When it comes to road trips, two wheels often provide the best way to experience the scenery and no more so than in beautiful Northern California

t’s 6:30am and the fog has barely started burning off the San Francisco Bay. But Cat MacLeod, Tour Master and operator of Leod Escapes, wants to get an early start. “We’re fitting four days of riding into three,” he explains, setting the scene for our upcoming epic trek crisscrossing Northern California. 61

The night before we obtained our bikes – a cruisy BMW r1200r and the more upright, off-road-inspired BMW r1200gS – from Dubbelju Motorcycles, one of the city’s oldest and best motorcycle rentals. In theory, the route sounds simple enough and looking at maps online, it doesn’t seem like Day one, which takes us from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe, will be particularly arduous. However, after crossing the Central valley, we have the small matter of traversing the Sierra Nevada – the glorious mountain range that separates California from Nevada – to contend with. So we find ourselves setting out over San Francisco’s Bay Bridge in the mercifully sparse early Saturday morning traffic, the sun flitting between the girders as we make our first tentative foray on our rented bikes. In spite, or perhaps because, of its steep inclines, San Francisco is a biker’s city, and it allegedly has a higher motorcycle ownership per

capita than any other place in the uS. “The reason is simple,” says MacLeod, a giant of a man with a viking’s flowing blonde hair, who dwarfs his 1200cc Ducati Multistrada. “Northern California has the best riding in the States. I’d argue that point with anyone.” In terms of the roads that we were to experience that day, and the subsequent two, it’s hard to argue with that assessment. other regions of the uS have equally jaw-dropping scenery but in terms of sheer diversity of terrain, coupled with the length of the riding season – it only becomes miserable for a couple of rainy winter months – it’s hard to imagine a serious rival. The first part of the trip is pretty straightforward. We navigate our way across the bay and past oakland, heading out through suburbia to the sprawling farmlands of the northern Central valley. If you’re

not from the States or a similarly vast country, it’s hard to imagine the scale of the countryside, and even at this early stage – first travelling through orchards, then cattle ranches – it is impressive to eyes accustomed to asian landscapes. We encounter our first curves as soon as suburbia peters out, on Marsh Creek road below Mount Diablo, but our guide dismisses these elementary swoops as a mere taste. “These are nothing. Wait until we get up into the mountains,” he promises. The produce – blueberries and strawberries, apricots and peaches – sold by the roadside along this stretch is like “a farmer’s market spread along the road,” says Cat’s wife and tour companion, Maus. It’s the first sign of California’s rich agricultural bounty, and a heartening indicator of things to come. The state has long had a commitment to fresh local ingredients, and in addition

to the blockbuster names like the French Laundry in Napa, there is an increasing support of localisation right down to the most small-town places. our breakfast pit stop, at the grounds coffee shop and restaurant (groundsrestaurant.com) in the pretty little town of Murphys, illustrates this beautifully. We soon leave the smalltown setting behind and head out through historic gold country. our excitement mounts when the first sweeps and turns of the Sierra Nevada foothills become evident. Having a tour guide under these circumstances is invaluable – Cat’s local knowledge, gleaned from years, if not decades, of riding these back roads, is encyclopedic, and george, the photographer, and I are content to allow him to dictate both the pace and the route. The route is carefully mapped out to provide us with a huge diversity of

landscapes – from the stunning, highelevation switchbacks of the High Sierras, where the last of the winter snow feeds crystal clear mountain streams, to semi-arid desertscapes, the agricultural heartland of the Central valley, the back roads of the beautiful Napa and Sonoma County’s wine country, and the latter’s utterly breathtaking coastline, along the famed Highway 1. Plateauing just above the tree line, at around 9,500 feet (2,896 metres), the Sierra’s Sonora Pass is pure Californian wilderness and the air is heavy with the ozone-fresh smell of pine. Wildflowers line the roadside and the wooded turns often open up into breathtaking vistas. The road, which remains closed for the winter months, snakes over this hugely impressive range. The curves are as good as any I’ve experienced (thus far, at least) and with a gentle caution from Cat about

the logging trucks’ predilection to spray gravel over the road, we’re off, coaxing our bikes around these snaking turns. on the way down, the road turns into a yawning switchback and past this, the valley floor opens up in front of you. The road leads down to, and alongside, the Walker river, a mountain-fed confluence that takes us past Jeff Kinds’ Mountain view Barbeque. It’s a true roadside joint and during the summer, Kinds estimates that fully half of his clientele arrive on motorcycles. The proprietor is dedicated to his craft, and wakes before dawn to start smoking his brisket. This attention to the slow art of smoking means there really is no better place to stop for lunch on this beautifully desolate road. after eating we’re soon back up on a high plateau, overlooking the vastness of California and to the north, Nevada. neighbouring state and the border town of South Lake Tahoe, where the state line – on the Nevada side, at least – is celebrated with its most famous industry: casinos. Back on the Californian side, we stay in the eco-friendly 968 Park Hotel – all repurposed wood, local craft beers and live music. a quick dinner by the lake is followed by a deep, uninterrupted sleep. But with another early start the climb back over the mountains begins, and this time we take the Carson Pass, complete with alpine lakes and a stunning lookout point at 8,000 feet (2,438 metres). This eventually leads to a turnoff onto Shake ridge road, Fiddletown and the back roads of the gold Country. The road takes us through wooded, sun-dappled backcountry, past picture-perfect farms and their 1930s-era red-painted barns. It’s a marked contrast from the rarified air of the mountains. It also marks the beginning of wine country – the state has cultivated vineyards here for well over a century – and we make a quick stop in the Italian-themed Toscana (villatoscano.com) for an impromptu take-home purchase. Most wineries welcome visitors for on-site sales and some, like Toscana, also offer meals. We soon head out again, however, for a straight shot across the Central valley toward wine country proper. The roads around Stockton and Lodi, just to the south of the state capital Sacramento, are largely unremarkable but riders are eventually rewarded for their

patience with the Suison valley road and Highway 121, a curvy section of mostly new blacktop that takes you into northern Napa and the picturesque town of Calistoga. once famous for its hot springs, Calistoga is now known for its wine tours, which are sensibly bussed around. Should bikers wish to stay overnight, two tour groups – Terrific Tours (terrifictours.com) and Platypus (platypustours.com) – provide fantastic, chauffeured wine tours. We stop for a much-needed lunch break at the lovely Hydro grill and its award-winning burgers. It’s

ostensibly a pub, but very much a Napa-style eatery, meaning quality is high up on the list of priorities. From Napa and into Sonoma, the landscape is marked by endless trellised vines, which make for a scenic run through low-lying, twisting roads. We head through anderson valley, making our way toward the man-made Sonoma Lake, a popular weekend destination. Turning off left before the lake proper, we climb once again and encounter the signature curves of California riding – not only the wide, sweeping roads that invite

hard-leaning turns at speed but also a plethora of tighter, more technical bends. We drive along the forested slopes to the bottom of the valley, then up again, toward the coast and Sea ranch (sonomacounty.com/cities/ sea-ranch). a brief stop to help some stranded bikers deal with a deep puncture causes a slight delay, but soon we encounter the coastal mists of that most iconic of american roads, the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), otherwise known as California State Highway 1. We make our way along the final ten miles or so to the tiny town of gualala, our overnight stop. The Breakers Inn, looking out over Northern California’s dramatic coastline, is an ideal way to experience the ruggedness of this landscape while remaining in comfort. While the titular waves boom throughout the night, this small hotel’s occupants are kept warm by in-room log fires. Cat hands out small wipers that fit over a gloved finger the next morning, as the cold, coastal fog can quickly condensate on visors. We head south, hugging the coast, which often falls away dramatically giving sweeping vistas of crashing waves along this unforgiving stretch. It’s often hard to keep an eye on the road, so mesmerising is this scenery. an early lunch stop takes place at one of the most memorable culinary stops on the journey. The Marshall Store (themarshallstore.com), just outside of Tomales, is one of several roadside shacks along Highway 1 that pull oysters out of the bay and

prepare them to a uniquely PCH recipe. Thrown on a barbeque, when ready they pop open under steam pressure. Dashed with chorizo or hot sauce, they’re served by the dozen with sourdough bread, that Northern California mainstay, and local beers. replete with shellfish, it’s time for the final leg, through Point reyes, Marin County and the famed redwood forests. We zoom past george Lucas’ famous Skywalker ranch – stopping in the driveway for the briefest of photos – before joining Highway 110 and the traffic toward that most famous of San Francisco landmarks, the golden gate Bridge. Navigating our way back through the city to the Dubbelju garage to return our trusty steeds, we notice that the tripmeter has clocked us in at a neat 800 miles (about 1,280 kilometres) – a tidy end to a hugely diverse, visually rich three days on the road. San Francisco, of course, has a huge range of hotels. Two very different sides of the city can be found at the ultra-modern, skyscraper-based Mandarin oriental (mandarinoriental. com/sanfrancisco), our base before the trek, or the full-of-character Queen anne Hotel (queenanne.com), a repurposed girls’ school that retains many original architectural elements. on the road, the 968 Park Hotel (968parkhotel.com) in South Lake Tahoe provides unpretentious accommodation, and the Breaker’s Inn (breakersinn.com) in gualala is a great choice of coastal venue.

MOTORCYCLE DETAILS

Dubbelju Motorcycle rentals (dubbelju.com) provide a range of top-of-the-line machines. all are impeccably maintained and great for anything from a trip of a couple days to weeks-long jaunts. riders are required to hold a valid uS or overseas motorcycle licence, and to have at least two years’ experience on bikes of 450cc or larger. Leod Escapes (leodescapes.com) provides standard scheduled tours and customdesigned tours, led by local guides with extensive experience. The tours range from groups of up to 12 bikes for several weeks or just a single rider for one day. Bear in mind that motorcycle riding is by its nature a potentially dangerous endeavour, so check with your insurance company to make sure that it is covered before booking a trip.

Spend a few days in the western gateway to the US and see the sights – Hollywood Boulevard, Beverly Hills, Disneyland. There’s plenty of fashionable cafés, fantastic beaches and great nightlife and, who knows, you could even see a movie star or two!

From humble beginnings, the Doi Tung Development Project is testament to Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra’s determination to help local people and preserve the environment On 21 October 2000, the international community joined Thai people in celebrating the 100th birthday anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra, the mother of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The late Princess Mother was honoured as one of the world’s great personalities by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The 100th anniversary of the birth of Her Royal Highness was included in UNESCO’s Calendar of Anniversaries of Great Personalities and Historic Events, 2000 and 2001. Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra had shown the world how individuals can contribute to development. By starting small, with determination and commitment, one can finally reach his or her goals. From a humble start, the Doi Tung Development Project has grown over the years, a major achievement for Her Royal Highness. Doi Tung is the name of a high mountain in Chiang Rai, Thailand’s northernmost province, and a dwelling place of hill tribe villagers. Around 50 years ago during her visits to the north, Her Royal Highness noticed that the slash-and-burn technique used by the hill tribes to clear the land for cultivation had led to forest destruction. When she visited Doi Tung in 1987, the hills in the area were denuded because of the destructive slash-and-burn technique of clearing land. She expressed her intention to reforest Doi Tung, upgrade the standard of living of local people, provide them with more educational opportunities and public health services, and promote agricultural development in a systematic manner. The hub for the Doi Tung Development Project is the Doi Tung Palace, the construction of which was completed in November 1988 as a home for Her Royal Highness. The palace, designed like a Swiss chalet on the basis of simplicity and practicality, was built with her personal funds. During her stay in this palace for about 10 years, amazing changes emerged, as the mountain was turned into a green area 70

ตามรอยโครงการพัฒนาดอยตุง เสนทางยาวไกล ยิง่ ใหญและงดงาม เมือ่ เดือนตุลาคม พุทธศักราช 2543 ในโอกาสคลายเดือนพระราชสมภพ ครบ 100 ป ของสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี สมเด็จยาของปวงชนชาวไทย องคการการศึกษา วิทยาศาสตร และวัฒนธรรมแหงสหประชาชาติ หรือ ยูเนสโก (UNESCO) มีมติถวายพระเกียรติดว  ยการอัญเชิญพระนามบันทึกไวในปฏิทนิ บุคคล สําคัญระดับโลก ประจําปคริสตศักราช 2000-2001 ในฐานะทีท่ รงมีผลงานดีเดน เพือ่ สวนรวม ในดานการศึกษา วิทยาศาสตรประยุกต การพัฒนามนุษย สังคมและ สิง่ แวดลอม ทรงแสดงใหโลกเห็นวาปจเจกชน สามารถสรางการพัฒนาไดอยางไร แมจะ เริม่ ตนจากโครงการเล็กๆ แตดว ยพระวิรยิ ะอุตสาหะ ก็ทาํ ใหบรรลุเปาหมายไดในทีส่ ดุ โครงการเล็กๆ แตยง่ิ ใหญในความสําเร็จนัน้ คือโครงการพัฒนาดอยตุงในจังหวัด เชียงราย ทางภาคเหนือของประเทศ ซึง่ ถือกําเนิดขึน้ เมือ่ กวา 50 ปกอ น เมือ่ ครัง้ สมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี ไดทอดพระเนตรผืนปาทางภาคเหนือของ ประเทศไทย ทีค่ อ ยๆ ถูกทําลายจากการตัดไมทาํ ลายปาเพือ่ ปลูกฝน บนดอย ดวย พระมหากรุณาธิคณุ อันหาทีส่ ดุ มิได ทรงตัง้ พระราชปณิธานทีจ่ ะฟน ฟูสภาพผืนปา บนดอยทีแ่ หงแลงใหกลับเขียวขจี รวมทัง้ ยกระดับความเปนอยูข องชาวไทยภูเขา ดวยการขจัดความยากจน การมอบโอกาสทางการศึกษาและอืน่ ๆ มีพระราชประสงค ใหชาวเขาไดรบั การศึกษา การสาธารณสุข และสุขอนามัย ทําใหมรี ายไดเลีย้ งตัวเอง และครอบครัวโดยไมตอ งทําเกษตรเลือ่ นลอย ซึง่ ทําใหปา ไมทอ่ี ดุ มสมบูรณตอ งเสือ่ ม สภาพและแหงแลงในทีส่ ดุ เมือ่ พระตําหนักดอยตุงสรางแลวเสร็จในเดือนพฤศจิกายน 2531 สมเด็จ พระบรมราชชนนีไดเสด็จแปรพระราชฐานเพือ่ มาประทับทรงงาน พระตําหนักแหง นีถ้ อื เปนบานหลังแรก สรางขึน้ ดวยพระราชทรัพยสว นพระองค เนนความเรียบงาย และการใชประโยชน มีลกั ษณะสถาปตยกรรมแบบลานนา ผสานกับบานพืน้ เมืองของ สวิส สรางบนไหลเนิน มองเห็นทิวทัศนไดไกลสุดสายตา ในชวงเวลา 10 ปทส่ี มเด็จพระบรมราชชนนีประทับ ณ พระตําหนักดอยตุง กอใหเกิดความเปลีย่ นแปลงอยางนาอัศจรรย ลาดเขาอุดมดวยปาตนน้าํ ลําธารอันเขียว ชอุม มีพน้ื ทีป่ า เศรษฐกิจและสวนพฤกษศาสตร ในระยะแรก บริเวณนีเ้ ปนเพียงพืน้ ที่ ใชในโครงการทดลองดานการเกษตร เพือ่ จูงใจใหชาวเขาในทองทีห่ นั มาปลูกตนไม ทดแทนในบริเวณปาเสือ่ มโทรม และฟน ฟูสภาพแวดลอม ปจจุบนั ดอยตุงเปนโครงการ 70

and a forest and botanical park came into existence around there. In the initial stage, this area was used to carry out agricultural experiment projects to encourage hill tribe villagers to replant the forest. Later, natural forest recovery was brought to Doi Tung, which has now become a major tourism destination in Thailand. With the success of the Doi Tung Development Project, the living conditions of local people have markedly improved. They have grown many cash crops and earned a stable income. Her Royal Highness believed that nobody wanted to conduct bad deeds, but poverty and the lack of opportunities provided them with no alternatives. Unique Doi Tung products have been created and developed to the international standard, with the combination of local wisdom and modern business management style. They have become sought-after goods in the international market as well. The Doi Tung Development Project supervises the economic forest and handles agricultural production, such as coffee, macadamia nuts, and decorative and flowering plants. Among other activities engaged by local residents are handicraft making, cloth and carpet weaving, and ceramics production. Regarding tourism, the Doi Tung Lodge and the Greater Mekong Lodge are offered for visitors to appreciate natural beauty and to organise meetings, seminars or training. Native food prepared from organic raw materials has greatly impressed all visitors. A scenic viewing point that should not be missed is the Mae Fah Luang Garden, which is home to a variety of temperate flowers and features “Continuity” sculptures, which reflect continuous development work for achieving success. The Doi Tung Development Project at the initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra has become a model for efforts to bring about sustainable development. It has also been admired by and received attention from various countries worldwide.

Customs Laws Alcoholic Beverages and Cigarettes Alcoholic beverages and cigarettes are controlled items. A passenger is allowed to bring 1 litre of alcoholic beverages and 200 cigarettes into Thailand free of duty. The exceeding amount will be prosecuted and confi scated.

Carry-On Baggage

Passengers may carry one item of hand baggage to place in a closed overhead bin or under the seat in front of them. The overall dimensions of such baggage should not exceed 115cm (45 inches) or 58 X 34 X 23cm. Its overall weight should not exceed 7kg.

All drinks are served free of charge. Only alcoholic drinks served by our cabin attendants may be consumed. It is recommended that you drink nonalcoholic drinks as flying can cause dehydration, but we are happy to serve alcoholic drinks to passengers aged 18 years and over. Cabin attendants may decline to serve alcohol to passengers who appear to be intoxicated. This regulation has been implemented for passenger safety, in accordance with THAI’s air traffic policy and procedures.

Special Meals

Vegetarian, low-fat, infant, children, kosher and Muslim meals are available on board by special request. Requests for special meals must be made when making your reservation at least 48 hours in advance.

Speciality Items

A wide range of items is available on Thai Airways International fl ights for passengers with special requests, including toys, milk bottles, diapers, bibs, postcards and writing materials. Ask one of our cabin crew should you require one of the above, or need any assistance.

Communication

Some of our aircraft are equipped with cordless telephones and facsimile machines. The charge for their use is US$8 per minute.

Any person who brings or takes an aggregate amount of foreign currency exceeding US$20,000 or its equivalent out of or into the Kingdom of Thailand shall declare such amount of foreign currency to a customs officer. Failure to declare upon bringing foreign currency that exceeds the amount restricted by law or its equivalent out of or into the Kingdom of Thailand or making any false declaration to a customs officer is breaking customs laws. If you have any enquiries, please consult a customs officer.

Please study the safety card in your front seat pocket and locate the closest emergency exits near you. Be sure to keep your seat belt fastened during takeoff and landing, and at all times while seated. For safety reasons, passengers are asked to refrain from sleeping on the aircraft floor and unnecessary walking during the flight. Sleeping passengers may be injured during unexpected turbulence unless firmly restrained by their seat belt. After landing, please remain in your seat with your seat belt fastened until the aircraft has come to a complete stop and the “fasten seat belt” sign has been switched off.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted by law on all THAI flights. The regulations have been implemented for passenger safety, in accordance with THAI’s air traffic policy and procedures. THAI’s flight attendants follow specific measures that strictly comply with safety regulations set by the civil aviation board to secure the safety of aircraft, passengers and airline property.

GENTLE INFLIGHT EXERCISES เทคนิคบริหารรางกายเมือ่ อยูบ นเครือ่ งบิน There are some gentle exercises you can do that will improve your comfort level during and after a flight. Most important is that passengers should perform leg exercises and simple arm movements, especially during long flights. We recommend you do these exercises three or four times every hour. None of them should be performed if they cause pain.

THAI Smile Launches Flights to Colombo, Sri Lanka

hai Airways International recently announced that THAI Smile will operate round-trip fl ights on the Bangkok–Colombo route. THAI adjusted its fl ight schedule to meet passenger demands and market expansion. THAI Smile is the new choice for passengers travelling regionally who enjoy trendy, friendly and worthy service based on THAI standards at affordable prices. THAI Smile, a THAI business unit, now operates four round-trip fl ights per week from Bangkok–Colombo and will increase to seven fl ights per week, effective 27 October 2013. Currently, THAI Smile operates round-trip fl ights to 10 destinations, with domestic fl ights from Bangkok–Chiang Mai, Bangkok–Surat Thani, Bangkok–Phuket, Bangkok– Krabi, Bangkok–Udon Thani, Bangkok–Ubon Ratchathani, and regional fl ights from Bangkok–Macau, Bangkok– Ahmedabad, Bangkok–Mandalay, Bangkok–Colombo, Phuket–Delhi, and Phuket–Mumbai. hai Airways International announced that its inflight magazine, Sawasdee, won an Award for Excellence in Magazine Design at the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) 2013 Awards. The SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence were established as a tribute to editorial excellence in both traditional and new media, and were designed to encourage editorial vitality throughout the region. In choosing Sawasdee for the Excellence in Magazine Design award, the judges said its “dramatic use of art photos goes beyond the standards of the inflight magazine genre.” THAI is most honoured to have received this award. THAI Announces New Japanese Destination, Bangkok–Sendai

hai Airways International together with concerned official parties – Miyagi prefecture, Sendai city and Tohoku chamber of commerce – officially announced its inauguration of service between Bangkok and Sendai (BKK–SDJ) from 3 December 2013 at a joint press conference held at Sendai city hall. Attendees included reporters from local TV stations and newspapers based in the Tohoku region. At the press conference, Mr Wiwat Piyawiroj, THAI Director of East Asia, the Americas & Philippines, officially announced the plan to start the thrice-weekly BKK–SDJ–BKK regular service flights using Airbus A330 type aircraft from December onwards. In addition, Ms Emiko Okuyama, mayor of Sendai city, expressed her heartfelt welcome for THAI’s operation of service, which the people of Tohoku had long waited for. She mentioned that the new operation would not only offer convenient air transportation to the people of the region to Bangkok and other Southeast Asian countries, but at the same time, she is expecting more in-bound travellers from Thailand.

Thai Airways International announced it was recently recognised by Smart Travel Asia for placing in three categories in its annual poll. THAI placed fourth in the Top 10 Airlines Worldwide category and third in the Top 10 Airlines Cabin Service, while THAI Smile placed sixth in the Top 10 Budget Airlines category.
