FRANCONIA’S RANGE OF TOWNS HAS BEEN INSPIRING CULTURE VULTURES SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL. Bratwurst and the Imperial Castle: This is the image that most people hold in their mindʼs eye when they think of Nuremberg. But the Franconian city has a lot more to offer. European history can be sensed at every step. This is in part due to the worldfamous sights like the Imperial Castle, which, in the Middle Ages, was one of the most important royal palaces of the Holy Roman Empire; the historical Old Town; the German National Museum; the Dürerhaus in Albrecht Dürerʼs former home; the German Railway Museum with a replica of the first German train, the ”Adler“; the Documentation Centre; and the memorial to the Nuremberg Trials. There you can see where the ”Nuremberg Trials“ took place as well as a permanent exhibition documenting the trials themselves. The medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, located on the Romantic Road, is the epitome of romantic city trips. The townʼs location itself, high above the Tauber Valley, is enough to make you want to take a closer look at the medieval town.
Erlangen is one of the best-preserved planned baroque towns in Germany. The streets which stand at right angles to one another, the Hugenottenkirche, the Margravial Theatre, the castle and castle gardens, and the Botanical Gardens come together to create an outstanding architectural and historical ensemble. The Erlangen ”Bergkirchweih“ – believed to be the oldest beer festival in the world – is the highlight of the calendar. When Erlangenʼs mayor taps the first barrel of beer on the Thursday before Whitsun, it is said to be the start of the ”fifth season“ in Erlangen. With over two thousand listed buildings, Fürth has the greatest density of listed buildings in the whole of Bavaria. The architectural history of the ”clover leaf town“ can be seen from the heart of the Old Town to the large art nouveau and Gründerzeit urban buildings. The Jewish history, which dates back almost a thousand years, represents a key part of Fürthʼs past. Jewish inhabitants provided stimulus after stimulus for the town. The Franconian Jewish Museum provides insights into the life of Jewish citizens.

FRANCONIA’S CULTURAL JEWELS Set in the heart of the expansive natural Franconian countryside, 14 towns reveal their special charm. The former free imperial towns of Dinkelsbühl, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Schweinfurt and Nuremberg; or Fürth have largely been shaped by the Middle Ages. Meanwhile, in the cultural town of Aschaffenburg and in the Franconian bishop towns of Bamberg, Eichstätt and Würzburg, it is castles and residences which fascinate visitors with their audacious architecture and valuable cultural treasures. The former residences of Ansbach, Bayreuth, Erlangen, Kulmbach and Coburg also give visitors a sense of the elegance and glamour of their glory days with their magnificent buildings. The Residence in Würzburg, Bamberg Old Town and the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. SUMMER 2014 MY BAVARIA 5

CULTURE, TOWNS & CULINARY HIGHLIGHTS
Hearty bratwurst and smooth beer Nuremberg sausages are a cultural artefact: Whether eaten by hand, three a-breast im Weggla (in a bread roll); served as a six-piece on a bed of cabbage on pewter plates; or as Blaue Zipfel, cooked in a vinegar-flavoured stock. As you wander through Nuremberg, you can easily orientate yourself using your sense of smell: you can stop at a bratwurst stall or head to one of the numerous bratwurst restaurants, some of which have been
around since the 16th century. The council of the free imperial city of Nuremberg specified the recipe for bratwurst back in 1313: The sausage must be between seven and nine centimetres in length and must weigh between 20 and 25 grams.
bergʼs long beer tradition has something to suit every taste: lager (”Helles“), stout (”Dunkles“) or a real red ale (”Rotbier“). In a purity law of 1303, the City of Nuremberg Council decreed that only barley and malt could be used in the beer brewing process. The history of beer in Nuremberg can be discovered during a tour of the rock-cut cellars, which run under the city. The tour concludes in the Altstadthof independent brewery at the foot of Nurembergʼs Imperial Castle. As the first organic brewery in Germany, it has been brewing beer in copper vessels and wooden fermenting vats in line with the old beer laws since it was founded in 1984. Visitors can also experience a little piece of Franconian beer and brewery culture during a tour of the traditional Tucher brewery.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
THREE RIVERS ARRIVING FROM DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS COME TOGETHER IN PASSAU TO CREATE A LANDSCAPE OF RARE BEAUTY. Passau’s townscape was created by Italian baroque builders following the devastating fires of 1662 and 1680. The high towers and bright façades, the picturesque squares, the romantic promenades and the winding alleys still give off an air of Mediterranean flair to this day. Right in the middle of all this, in the centre of the Old Town, St Stephanʼs cathedral rises majestically. The building is home to the
largest cathedral organ in the world. Every weekday from May to October, the organʼs 18,000 pipes can be heard chiming during the midday organ concert. The finest things in life are always in season in Passau. Visitors can enjoy the baroque backdrop of the former residence town of the prince bishops in relaxed fashion
on a ”Three Rivers“ boat trip. Inviting street-side cafés tempt you to stop for a while during shopping trips around the town. Regional and international delicacies are served in the restaurants and inns, many of which feature quaint beer and wine gardens. Meanwhile, party animals will get their moneyʼs worth in the townʼs numerous pubs and clubs.

Regensburg, the 2000-year-old Roman city on the northernmost point on the River Danube is unique in every respect. The numerous examples of Roman and gothic architecture in the historical Old Town remained largely undamaged during World War II, leading Regensburg to be awarded the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. The centuries-old Stone Bridge stands among the masterpieces of European bridge construction. It also represents a picturesque starting point for a walking tour of the city. The view of the almost twenty well-maintained towers, bright houses and archways reveals the southern ambience. The unmistakeable smell of bratwurst from the historical ”Wurstkuchl“ mingles with the fresh breeze from the River Danube. The ”Wurstkuchl“ is the oldest bratwurst restaurant in the world. Sampling the home-made sausage with sauerkraut and traditional mustard is one of the highlights
of Regensburg. Alongside culinary delights, Regensburg also provides a diverse range of cultural offerings. The ”Regensburger Domspatzen“ boysʼ choir is celebrated around the world. Important music festivals, such as the ”Bavarian Jazz Weekend“, the ”Days of Historical Music“ and the ”Festival at Thurn & Taxis Palace“, provide top-quality entertainment throughout the year. Regensburg is also a modern city Regensburg does not sleep when the sun goes down. Around 25,000 students call the city their home and help to ensure a pulsating nightlife. Be it at traditional restaurants, in pubs, clubs or charming street-side cafés, you can sense the special combination of tradition and modernity on every corner.

RESTAURANT RECOMMENDATION FOR BEER FANS … … who want to sample an innovative range of beers: The Taphouse in Munich (www.tap-house-munich.de)
With over 600 breweries, a large malting barley and hops cultivation area, the abundance of naturally pure water, and the beer research institute in Weihenstephan – the only one of its kind in the world – beer is as much a part of Bavaria as King Ludwig and Neuschwanstein Castle. The rich golden or dark malt delicacies are the ideal thirst-quenchers and encourage people to enjoy spending time together in the beer gardens, especially in the summer. Over forty traditional types of beer and innumerable beer innovations are produced in Bavaria in line with the Bavarian Purity Law. Their taste reflects the regional preferences: Franconia has the greatest density of breweries in Europe. In Kulmbach you can find out everything that you need to know about the Bavarian ”Manna“ and its creation some 5,000 years ago in what is now Iraq. Bamberg is renowned for its ”Bierkeller“, the local term for beer gardens, and for its ”Rauchbier“ or smoked beer. Alongside Weihenstephan in Freising, the oldest brewery in the world (dating back to 1050) can be found in Weltenburg in the Upper Palatinate. The multi-award-winning beers are served in the monastery bar and in the beer garden. These include the oldest dark beer in the world, the ”Kloster Weltenburg Barock Dunkel“.
Regional preferences shape the diverse beer culture Aying brewery guesthouse is situated in the heart of a typical Upper Bavarian panorama, with meadows spanning to the horizon, interspersed with the odd farmhouse and bulbous spire. Studying the beer menu with its prize-winning specialities is enough to inspire the tastebuds. Germanyʼs highest private brewery in Mittenwald (over 900 metres above sea level) also maintains its traditions. Eight different types of beer, all with a specific character, are brewed in the 200-year-old brewery; including the mildly spiced Karwendel Hell and the light gold, sparkling Werdenfelser Weisse. Bavariaʼs brewers know their craft. They prove this with their creative speciality beers, which they brew in line with the oldest regulation for food production still in force to this day: the Bavarian Purity Law. They use newly cultured or long-forgotten types of aromatic hops, and combine special malts of all shades in the brew. They are even treading new paths when it comes to the brewing procedure and choice of yeast strain that ferments the wort. In this way, they are enriching the traditional assortment of beers, which is already unique, to create new taste experiences.

CULTURE, TOWNS & CULINARY HIGHLIGHTS MUNICH
The eventful global city with a
METROPOLITAN FLAIR AND ANCIENT TRADITIONS – IN THIS QUITE SPECIAL ”MUNICH MIX“ BEER IS THE CROWNING GLORY. ”Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit!“ Each autumn, people travel from all continents to celebrate the Munich Oktoberfest together. But the largest public festival in the world is not the only way of enjoying beer in Munich. On warm summer evenings, packing up a picnic and concluding the day in a beer garden with a freshly poured beer is a way of life. In Munich, you can enjoy food the way you want to. Traditional cuisine like ”Schweinsbraten“ roast pork and ”Knödel“ dumplings are just as likely to get guestsʼ mouths watering as the finest gourmet cuisine. Gault Millau has awarded its sought-after (chefʼs) hats to a total of 46 restaurants in Munich. And the gourmetsʼ bible, the Michelin Guide, has crowned two of the cityʼs restaurants with two stars and a further ten restaurants with one Michelin star.
Tradition is modern The typical Munich approach to life can be sensed everywhere. Traditional dress and folk music are as fashionable now as they have ever been. Oktoberfest and traditional markets called ”Dulten“ have achieved cult status among the younger generations. And you will always find an occasion to don your dirndl or lederhosen here, for example at the ”Frühlingsfest“ spring festival, the ”Starkbierfest“ beer festival or at club nights with the motto ”Nacht der Tracht“ (or ”Costume Night“) and ”Heimatabend“ (an evening with traditional music and dance). Baroque masterpieces like the Frauenkirche, Nymphenburg Palace and the Residence shape the cityscape of the capital of Bavaria as much as modern architecture. And it didnʼt take long for Munichʼs Allianz Arena to become one
heart
of the most famous football stadiums in the world. The spectacular exterior skin, which comprises thousands of diamond-shaped cushions of air is illuminated in red when Bayern Munich play at home, and in white and blue when it is the turn of the other Munich team, TSV 1860, to play their home games. Meanwhile, BMW Welt is a great example of how a building can perfectly fit into its surroundings, no matter how ambitious the architecture: Opposite the floating roofs of the Olympic Park from 1972 and directly adjacent the BMW skyscraper and the BMW Museum, the double domes of the building spiral upwards in a dynamic curve, covered by a roof, which the Munich automotive manufacturer calls the ”cloud“.

The Mary pilgrimage site of Altötting and the home of the Passion Plays, Oberammergau, are the most famous spiritual centres in Bavaria and have been the central pilgrimage sites of crowned rulers since time immemorial. Those following in their footsteps will experience not just an extremely varied landscape, but also a religious spirit that could not be richer in contrast if it tried. Altötting has been the spiritual centre of Bavaria for over 1,250 years. Ever since the pilgrimage became popular some 500 years ago, innumerable believers, including many members of the ruling houses of Bavaria and Austria, have travelled to the small Chapel of Grace to recite their personal worries to the ”Black Madonna“ – blackened by candle smoke – or to express their thanks for their suffrage and the help they have received. The hearts
of Bavarian kings and prince bishops are also stored here in the artistically decorated silver urns. They include the heart urn of the Bavarian fairy-tale king, Ludwig II. You can find more remnants of high-ranking visitors in the ”Treasury and Pilgrimage Museum“. The Myth of King Ludwig II lives on in Linderhof Palace King Ludwig II was a deeply religious man. As such, it is no surprise that he built his Linderhof Palace in the Ammergau Alps. World-famous religious sites, such as the Pilgrimage Church ”Zum Gegeißelten Heiland auf der Wies“ (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the abbeys of Rottenbuch and Ettal enjoy picturesque locations, set in the heart of the wonderful mountain landscape.

Oberammergau and the Passion Plays are inextricably linked with one another. The roots of the play showing the life, the death and the resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ lie in a vow made by the citizens of Oberammergau in 1633. Since then, the Play has been performed every ten years. An unbelievable number of romantic places, fascinating buildings and monuments of art is revealed to people travelling from Würzburg to Füssen – and thatʼs not even to mention the outstanding natural beauty. You should, without doubt, sample the ”Tauberschwarz“ – an old red wine grape that is only cultivated in the Tauber Valley. Wine is part of the history of Rothenburg ob der Tauber too. Germany is at its highest at the very peak of the 2,962-metre Zugspitze. Mountain landscapes typical of Bavaria, with blue lakes, green meadows and alpine huts, span in all directions at the foot of this dramatic backdrop. In this clear air, everyone is in their element; whether they are looking for sporting challenges, some peace and quiet or to attune to the rhythm of nature. Deep gorges, idyllic lakes and crystal-clear rivers – the water worlds in the Zugspitz-Region
LAKES, GORGES, RIVERS AND MOUNTAINS ALL INVITE YOU TO GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH THE NATURE AROUND GERMANY’S HIGHEST PEAK.

can be lively, thunderous or sedately burbling. A quite special jewel shines at the foot of the Zugspitze, at some 1,000 metres above sea level: Lake Eibsee near Grainau is one of the most beautiful and clean lakes in Upper Bavaria. You can wander around the lake in under two hours, unless you want to enjoy a bit of swimming on your way around, of course. Or how about going out on the lake in a rowing boat with your partner? Couples seeking close contact can head to one of the eight islands on which you can even get married in small circles. Around thirty kilometres to
the north, romantics head in their hundreds to Lake Staffelsee near Murnau. As the sun gradually sets behind the Wetterstein Mountains, the MS Seehausen offers a picturesque moonlight boat ride. While the waves softly hit the hull of the boat, the melodies of a live band can be heard on deck. Those not sipping cocktails can dance the night away under the bright lantern lights. Deep gorges and high mountains A walk through the Höllental gorge near Grainau on the labyrinthine paths, footbridges and through tunnels is an unforgettable experience

for all. The bizarre landscape provides an imposing insight into the magnificant power of nature. Gorges up to 150 metres in depth, countless waterfalls, huge fragments of rock and ice demonstrate the unique power of the water. Visitors can also enjoy magical moments at the ghost gorge in Leutasch near Mittenwald: spirits and sprites can be found getting up to mischief here. Two themed trails lead through the wealth of mythical shapes; they feature information boards to explain the myths, geology, flora and fauna of the natural spectacle to visitors.

with salt and brine
Bad Reichenhall is situated just before the gates of Salzburg, Mozartʼs home town. Set amidst the Berchtesgaden Mountains, the spa town is one of the sunniest regions in Bavaria. The mild and tranquil alpine climate acts like a mineral spring. A stroll through the historical Old Town, a visit to the underground salt grotto in the old salt refinery, and the pedestrian zone with its cafés – including the Café Reber with its famous ”Mozartkugeln“ chocolate balls – is enough to revive the body and soul. Even kings themselves travelled to the Bavarian state spa town. The royal spa gardens were one of the idyllic places to breathe deeply. At the AlpenSole outdoor inhalatoriumʼs graduation house, a

cool brine breeze is always blowing. This breeze is complemented by the sound of the spa music, which is played live by the Bad Reichenhall Philharmonic Orchestra. Hikers can cool their feet in the AlpenSole Kneipp pools or in the clear waters of the mountain lake. You can travel up the 1,600 metre high Predigtstuhl in relaxed fashion with the oldest cable car lift in the world. There you can enjoy your time at the top with magical views of the Alps and Bavarian hospitality in the traditional alpine huts.

romantic trails WALKING PLEASURE ON
THRILLING SMUGGLER TOUR
In days gone by, the Staubfall path was a smuggler route into neighbouring Austria. Today it represents one of the most picturesque walks for the whole family. The steep track from Ruhpolding to Heutal takes you along the rolling Staubfall river. It is a wonderful natural spectacle and a truly magical experience to feel the spray from the water cascades gently hit your face as you walk by. Difficulty: Long climbs, easy mountain walk Duration: 2.5 hours (one-way) Character: Themed walk, family tour
RUHPOLDING IS A HIKER’S FAVOURITE. NUMEROUS PATHS LEAD THROUGH THE WIDE VALLEY, ALONG THE RIVER TRAUN, PAST THE TRADITIONAL ALPINE HUTS, UP TO THE PEAKS OF THE BAVARIAN ALPS. It is early morning: time to put on your rucksack, lace up your walking boots and head off – mountains and valleys are close friends in Ruhpolding. Whether you are on a mountain tour with breathtaking alpine views, wandering through wild, romantic valleys, or along the River Traun: the intact natural landscape is your constant companion. You can choose between around 240 kilometres of paths, hiking trails and mountain paths. There is something to suit the fitness of everyone, to get the legs moving and to give free reign to the soul so that you can spend some time up close and personal with nature. The three-lake area known affectionately as
”Little Canada“ represents a real gem. The lakes of Lödensee, Mittersee und Weitsee nestle up against each other like pearls on a chain. When crossing the sunny alpine pathways, passing the untouched flora and the crystal-clear mountain becks that are suitable for drinking, walkers will feel like they are one step closer to the white and blue heavens up above. The aroma of hearty alpine ”Brotzeit“ snacks mingles with the clear mountain air. Dairy farmers produce cheese, milk and butter by hand. And those who have tried it can confirm: Nothing tastes better after a long walk than a typical, Bavarian ”Brotzeit“ in a cosy mountain hut.
