THE LAND OF LIGHT

Your best holiday in

The Land of Light - a region characterized by the sea, the wind and the unique light With Skagen literally at its head, the Land of Light offers wonderful holiday experiences for the whole family. In the Land of Light you’ll find a local population and an atmosphere that has attracted artists and holidaymakers for generations. The sea has an effect on all of us, regardless of whether we bathe in it, surf on it or try to catch fish. The sea requires intimacy and relieves us of stress. During the summer months it means relaxed fun with the family, allowing you to get away from the hectic pace of everyday life and to recharge your batteries. At other times of the year a walk along the beach in a stiff onshore breeze will enable you to taste the salt on your lips, hear the roar of the sea in your ears and give you peace in your soul. The Land of Light has miles of lovely beaches, but you can also head inland and find a different type of peace and quiet amongst fertile fields and beautiful beech forests.

SHAPED BY THE WIND

Shaped by the wind

A coastal bluff so high, a desert so wide and a headland in perpetual motion. The region’s westerly winds have created unique natural phenomena that are ever-changing.

SHAPED BY THE WIND

Furthest to the west, Rubjerg Knude towers up with its partly buried lighthouse still visible at the top. The waves constantly undermine the cliff, causing the land to crash down onto the beach below, whilst the wind picks up grains of sand from the cliff and carries them over the ridge.

This sand migration at Rubjerg Knude is highly destructive for life further inland and was combated by planting vegetation. As a consequence, however, the drifting sand is deposited on the top of the cliff, which has thus grown by 20 m in height during the last century to stand today at a height of 90 m. Råbjerg Mile is a genuine desert and Europe’s largest migrating dune. It covers more than 1 square kilometre and consists of around 4 million cubic metres of sand. Its highest point is 40 m above sea level, and the entire migrating dune is moving cross Skagen’s headland at a rate of around 15 m per year. It was the westerly winds which created Råbjerg Mile in the 17th century and which have kept it moving ever since. The migrating dune leaves behind it a plain of sandblasted stone, which in itself makes up a wonderful landscape. Skagen’s Gren, at the very tip of the country where Ska gerrak and Kattegat meet, is an absolutely unique experience. You can stand with a foot in each sea and experience the special feeling of standing at ”land’s end”. The currents in the water affect Grenen at all times. If you could watch a time-lapse film of Grenen, it would wag its tail like an eager dog. The strong currents in the sea and the low-lying coast make the waters around Skagen some of the most treacherous in the world. Several hundred ships have been wrecked near Skagen over the years, and it was no coincidence that Skagen was the site of the country’s first bascule light in 1627. Despite the fact that several taller lighthouses were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, it didn’t put a stop to the shipwrecks on this treacherous coast. The most recent wreck occurred in 2003. These tragic events with ships running aground also created heroes amongst the rescuers. You can learn more about these stories by visiting the local museum at Skagen Byog Egnsmuseum.

HÆRVEJEN

HĂŚrvejen

- new cycling and hiking rotes The main roads built by our ancestors provide adventures today on routes travelled on foot, by bike or on horseback. You can enjoy a short walk or continue all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

HÆRVEJEN

Hærvejen, the historic main artery from Viborg down through Jutland to Germany and the rest of Europe, originally continued further north via shipping routes to Norway and Sweden. This part of the route would probably have been familiar to local people, but was never charted. Today, however, this has been carried out, and the paths have now been opened as hiking routes.

When the king gathered his army, when Jutland’s far mers drove their cattle to the markets in Europe’s major cities and when pilgrims set off towards holy destinations in southern Europe, they all used the main road running through Jutland. The route has now been charted in North Jutland and hiking routes have been established from Viborg via Aggersund to Hirtshals and via Aalborg to Frederikshavn respectively, as well as a cycle route to Frederikshavn. The Hærvejen project has been carried out in collaboration between eight municipalities in North Jutland. The routes run through all the typical landscapes in North Jutland and past a large number of attractions. The western route via Aggersund enters the Land of Light along the western edge of the large bog of Store Vildmose, past Børglum Kloster and along the coast to Hirtshals. From here you could sail by small vessel to Norway and then continue all the way to Trondhjem. Today the small vessels have been replaced by modern high-speed ferries. The eastern hiking route via Aalborg reaches the Land of Light having crossed the ridge of Jyske Ås, before running via a detour to Sæby up over Øksnebjerg and down towards Frederikshavn. A cycle route has also been established from Viborg to Frederikshavn, although this largely consists of previously established cycle routes. This route runs via Aalborg and Dronninglund, after which it follows the ridge of Jyske Ås into the Land of Light and via Østervrå to Frederikshavn, from where overseas connections to Sweden existed in the Middle Ages - and still do today. From Gothenburg you can follow the pilgrims’ route to the abbeys in Eastern Götaland, which many will remember from the trilogy describing the adventures of Arn the crusader.

EVENTS

Exciting events

throughout the year

There’s something exciting going on every week of the year in the Land of Light. From small intimate events to major cultural occasions. Get inspiration on the internet or at a tourist office.

EVENTS

There are more than 2000 different events to choose from during the year. Some are for children, others for adults. Some are for the whole family, whilst others are aimed at enthusiasts. Some of them are also in English or German, but everyone is always very welcome.

The spoken word, the underlying story behind what you see, is what makes your holiday experiences unforgettable. And the good stories can be found throughout the Land of Light. There are stories about heroes and villains - such as the rescuers in Skagen and the fearsome bishop in Børglum, Stygge Krumpen. We have gathered together an extract of the biggest events in 2014 on the back page of this magazine, but you’ll find a lot more things to see and do on our website, lysetsland.dk. Here you can also find a special section called ”Land of Light for Kids”, which as the name suggests is aimed at children. New events appear all the time, so we recommend that you drop by your local tourist office when you arrive at the Land of Light. Here you can get an up-to-date list of events, as well as brochures, maps and personal tips about exciting events.

LØKKEN

Løkken is known and loved for its fine sandy beach and the characteristic white beach huts and fishing boats on the beach near the breakwater. For generations holiday guests from far and wide have travelled to Løkken to experience the sea, the dunes and the lovely town with sand in the streets.

Løkken is a lively town in the summer months, when a number of events are organized for both children and adults. In weeks 28 and 29, there’s even more action than normal, when ”Active Løkken” is held with a large number of sports activities on dry land and on the water, e.g. surfing and beach soccer. The high season also features annual events such as Løkken Concert, Løkken Antiques Fair and the so-called ”Vesterhavsmarch”, which is an organized walk along the beach. Løkken Concert is a great day with performances by current popular bands with music that suits all ages. On the main square and in the pedestrian streets you’ll find restaurants and cafés with outdoor seating flanked by shops which help to give a great atmosphere. Løkken offers good shopping, and at the summer’s Open-byNight events and flea markets there’s every chance of getting a bargain. For families with children and youngsters a visit to Action House is an essential part of a holiday in Løkken. Action House has go-karts, bowling, laser games, paintball, disco and many other activities. The kids will also love a visit to Bolcheriet on the square, where you can see how sweets are made the old-fashioned way. There are also a number of attractions within a short drive from Løkken, e.g. Børglum Kloster, candle production at Bombæk Lys near Vrå and Family Farm Fun Park between Vittrup and Nr. Lyngby.

LØNSTRUP

- art and magnificent scenery Nature and the sea have had an impact on Lønstrup down through the centuries. In the midst of the rugged landscape art and crafts are in full bloom.

Lønstrup has attracted numerous artists and craftsmen, and their galleries and open workshops are very characteristic of the town. On the winding main street with its well-maintained old fishermen’s houses, you find painters, glassblowers, ceramic artists, potters, goldsmiths and jewellery artists. The town is also known as a centre for antiques. The fearsome North Sea, which for centuries has provided a livelihood for a large part of Lønstrup’s population, takes a bite out of the steep bluffs surrounding the small fishing village. A short distance south of the town you find the remains of Mårup Church, which when it was built at the beginning of the 13th century was situated around 2 km from the coast. Parts of the church have now been taken down, as it lies just a few metres from the edge of the cliff.

EVENTS Guided tours and cultural events throughout the year – get an up-to-date list of events at the tourist office or at loenstrup.dk

LØNSTRUP

A couple of kilometres further south the 90-m-high Ru bjerg Knude towers up with the partly buried lighthouse at its summit. The view here is indescribable and you’re left in no doubt about the power of the forces of nature. In Lønstrup you’ll find a great selection of lovely places to eat. Several cafés have live music on the programme throughout the summer. Their menus have something to suit all tastes, but fish and shellfish are of course particularly popular in a town that lies just a few metres from the North Sea.

13

The countryside surrounding Lønstrup is great for cycling and hiking. The international North Sea Trail passes the town. Walk along a part of the route from the area around Rubjerg Knude through Lønstrup, Harrerenden and Skallerup to the beach at Nørlev Strand. There’s plenty of opportunity to experience the magnificent scenery in the area on horseback, with riding trips available in the dune plantation and on the beach.

SINDAL

Hjørring is Vendsyssel’s former cultural capital, which welcomes its guests with shopping, cafés, museums, theatre and lots of attractions, such as days to celebrate Stygge Krumpen, a popular revue and cattle show. The town has also managed to maintain its historic town centre whilst encouraging development in its surrounding neighbourhoods. In recent years exciting buildings have been built, such as Metropol with its shopping centre and library, another shopping centre on the site of the former slaughterhouse and a block of flats with energy-neutral apartments. In the town centre you find gems such as three medieval churches, Vendsyssel Historical Museum and several open workshops. If you enjoy art, then head for the art museum or look out for works of art on the streets or at the squares, including P. Nørkjærs Plads, where Professor Bjørn Nørgaard has produced his own sculptural interpretation of Nordic mythology.

et

Hjørring is a very green town with lovely parks and green areas. Christiansgave and Svanelunden invite you to relax and enjoy yourself. The park at Sct. Knuds Kilde has an open-air stage where summer plays are performed. At the northern edge of the town are the hills of Hjørring Bjerge, a unique 90-hectare area of countryside that features the dramatic landscapes of the Ice Age. At Bellevue you’ll find an observation tower with a view of the entire region, as well as a gallows mound that fortunately hasn’t been used since 1822. Find more inspiration for your holiday in the Hjørring Guide, which you can pick up at Metropol, Østergade 30.

SINDAL From Sindal you can paddle by canoe on the stream of Uggerby Å all the way out to the sea at Tversted.

VENDSYSSEL KUNSTMUSEUM Modern Danish art related to North Jutland.

Sindal lies in a lush valley at the point where the stream of Uggerby Å turns north as it runs out to its mouth in Skagerrak. The stream is great for trout-fishing and c anoeing. The forest at Tolne Skov is a popular destination, whilst at the agricultural museum in Mosbjerg you can see what living on the land was like some 100 years ago.

HIRTSHALS

Hirtshals is the perfect holiday destination for families that love the countryside and want to be active during their holiday. Here you’ll find some of the country’s best waters for windsurfing, lovely sandy beaches and lots of spots for angling, both from the coast and on boat trips.

Fishing and shipping have always made up the livelihood of the population of Hirtshals: initially traditional coastal fishing, later with ocean-going trawlers and seiners. The Port of Hirtshals is one of the country’s biggest fishing ports. It’s also an important commercial port and a nerve centre for ferry routes to Norway, the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Traffic to Norway has historic roots dating back to the vessels of the late Middle Ages. Commercial trade had great economic importance, as is the case with ferry services today. Many ships ran aground on a stretch of coast that was difficult to navigate, but the construction of Hirtshals Lighthouse in 1863 meant it became much safer to sail to Hirtshals. The lighthouse is still in service and you can walk to the top of it - 144 steps - and enjoy the magnificent view. Hirtshals is a good commercial centre thanks to the many Norwegian shopping tourists, but also the guests in the area’s holiday homes and hotels appreciate the shopping and cafés in Hirtshals. The North Sea Oceanarium, which has northern Europe’s biggest aquarium with a capacity of 4.5 million litres, tells the story of life in the sea that surrounds the region. Here you can get close to all the fascinating fish in the North Sea. Children will particularly enjoy the Crab Coast, where they can fish for crabs and try to touch a plaice or a starfish. The dune plantations at Tornby and Hirtshals are great for hiking, cycling and riding. It’s from here that the former main road, Hærvejen, begins its route down through Jutland (see page 6), in addition to which there’s a wealth of local paths and routes, including a 200-km network of continuous riding routes in Vendsyssel. You’re sure to experience fantastic natural attractions on your holiday, whether you’re on foot, on a bike or on horseback.

TVERSTED

The sun, the sand and the sea are unchanged. Beach fashions have changed a great deal, however. Holidaymakers no longer arrive by mail carriage, but in their own car, and a lot more languages are spoken than when Tversted was discovered as a holiday destination. The town has an atmosphere of tranquillity, relaxation and enjoyment.

Ever since it became fashionable to stay at beach hotels at the end of the 19th century, the town on the coast of Tannis Bay has attracted thousands of summer guests. Today the old beach hotel has been turned into a large, modern holiday resort and has been augmented by two attractive campsites and several hundred holiday homes along the coast.

Tversted is also a popular destination for most of the population of Vendsyssel. At least once during the course of the summer you should come to Tversted to enjoy the beach atmosphere, eat an ice cream at the blue icecream kiosk and see the sunset. Many return in the autumn when there are Jazzy Days in Tversted. The countryside around Tversted is ideal for hiking, cyc ling and riding. West of the town you can see how the two watercourses, Tversted Å and Uggerby Å, cut through the dunes as they make their way out to Skagerrak. East of the town the dune plantation stretches along the coast. The lakes of Tverstedsøerne make a lovely destination for an excursion with a large nature playground for children. A little further east you find EagleWorld, where you can experience falconers working with the impressive birds of prey. A few kilometres further inland is Bindslev with its former electricity power station. The power station was built in 1919 and provided direct current to the Bindslev area until 1968. In 2004 the power station was renovated and electricity production recommenced, although an inverter converts it to alternating current before it is fed onto the grid. The power station is run by the water from the stream of Uggerby Å, which is routed to provide a drop of 3.25 m. The plant is open to visitors throughout the year. CH DANSK | DEUTS

SKAGEN

Skagen

- art, scenery and atmosphere

At land’s end, where the two seas meet, lies the small fishing town - shaped by the wind and the sand, brought to life by the light and the artists.

An ice cream at the square from where to watch the sunset, a cup of coffee in the museum gardens, a beer on the quay, a glass of white wine at a preview at one of the galleries – visiting Skagen always provides something extra. The special atmosphere in the town, the light which is reflected in the sea, and the landscape characterized by the wind and the sand – adding even more value to your visit. 600 years ago Skagen was the region’s leading royal borough, although the town didn’t have streets or squares. However, it had fishermen and shipping - which both brought wealth. This period of prosperity was superseded by flooding and sand migration which almost destroyed Skagen. From the mid-19th century things took a turn for the better again, and at the end of the century artists discovered the unique light in Skagen and the great contrasts in the landscape and the local population.

23

SKAGEN

The light and the artists are still here. The scenery is as wonderful as ever. And the town’s livelihood is still based on fishing and shipping - and from tourism, because today Skagen has become ”public property”. Most people have something that ties them to Skagen: Perhaps a particular place, which is the essence of their Skagen, or a season or an event, e.g. local thea tre, music festival or the Skagen rally for vintage cars and motorbikes. You’ll almost certainly find your own piece of Skagen that you’ll look forward to returning to. That’s the thing about Skagen - it’s highly addictive.

Råbjerg Mile, a huge migrating dune covering one square kilometre which is swept across the country by the wind at a rate of 15 m per year. If you raise your head, you’re bound to spot exciting birds, not least birds of prey. Skagen is one of Europe’s best locations for bird-lovers (read more on page 37).

FREDERIKSHAVN

Frederikshavn is used to receiving many guests. With the region’s highest hotel capacity the town is well equipped to receive both large groups of conference guests and individual families that choose Frederikshavn as a starting point for a holiday in the Land of Light.

Exciting adventures await you in Frederikshavn, which, due to the ferry routes to Norway and Sweden, has an international atmosphere and a cultural and commercial life that far exceed that which could be expected of a town of its size. A small city with a museum of art, attractive pedestrian precincts and exciting cafés and restaurants. Throughout the year Frederikshavn puts on a number of cultural events such as outdoor rock concerts, the celebration of Tordenskiold’s deeds in the Great Nordic War of the 18th century and a succession of shows and concerts in Arena Nord and Det Musiske Hus. At the southern outskirts of the town you’ll find the idyllic manor house at Bangsbo with its museum, botanical gardens, animal park, etc. Here you can see the well-preserved Viking ship, Ellingåskibet. The museum also has an interesting exhibition based on World War II - a good prelude to visiting the big gun positions in the bunker museum, which is located at Bangsbo Fort at the top of the impressive hills high above Kattegat. Bangsbo Botanical Gardens and Animal Park, with its herds of fallow deer and stags, are also well worth a visit for the whole family. North of Frederikshavn you’ll find the palm-lined beach, Palmestranden, which is a beach that lies close to the town and features beach volleyball, a barbecue and activities for both children and adults. The area also has a delightful marina, golf course and fishing park. On cool days you can have fun in the swimming baths and aqua complex, e.g. at the Caribbean-inspired The Reef. 2014

SÆBY

- the delightful town by the sea Child-friendly beaches, good hotels and campsites, in addition to a charming urban and harbour environment make Sæby a unique experience.

Sæby has to be experienced – it’s really that simple. The old cultural town at the mouth of the stream with its monastery church, renaissance castle and medieval town centre has its own unique atmosphere and charm. Sæby has attracted tourists for generations - spa guests, artists and bonvivants. Sæby, which literally means the town by the sea, was a town of great importance in the Middle Ages, when the Carmelite monks built a large monastery in 1475, of which the church of St. Maria still exists. The natural harbour at the mouth of the stream made Sæby a nerve centre for trade and brought wealth to the town. Some of the large merchant houses can still be seen in Algade. 2014

SÆBYGÅRD was the Bishop of Børglum’s summer residence and later home to several admirals. Today it is a manor museum, complete with its own ghost.

SÆBY

At the end of the 19th century Sæby developed into one of the leading spa towns in the country following the discovery of a life-giving spring, Jernkilden. During the same period Sæby became the preferred summer residence for the country’s leading poets and authors, including Herman Bang, Henrik Ibsen and Holger Drachmann, in addition to Gustav Wied, who lived here permanently. Sæby is still a popular holiday town and home to a number of artists and craftsmen, who contribute to the generation of life and soul in the attractive old royal borough throughout the year. The town has a lively square with lots of good specialist shops, restaurants and a harbour where you can get a huge variety of fish and shellfish. There’s often music in the streets, on the square and in

the small courtyards, culminating in Whitsun’s “Fish & Jazz” festival. In Sæby the holiday homes are situated close to the beach along the long beach promenade which links the harbour and town to the beach, whilst the holiday homes south of the town are picturesquely located in the dune heath landscape adjacent to Lyngså’s broad, child-friendly beaches. Here you can indulge in fun and games or quiet contemplation. Lying slightly west of the town in the beautiful Sæbygård Forest is Sæbygård Manor, which has been home to many historic individuals, including Stygge Krumpen, the Bishop of Børglum, and no less than three admirals. Here children and adults can meet the castle’s ghosts throughout the summer!

Attractions: Sæby Museum, Manor house museum Sæbygård, Voergård Castle, Sæby Miniature town and Sæby Church.

Activities: Swimming baths, wellness, golf, tennis, miniature golf, football golf, canoeing, bowling and fitness.

Accommodation: 6 hotels/inns, 1 hostel, 1 holiday resort, 3 campsites and 1500 holiday homes.

ACTIVE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

Remember your cycle and running shoes when going on holiday in the Land of Light. You won’t find better terrain anywhere, with lots of picturesque roads and paths a long way from heavy traffic.

33

As a guest in the Land of Light you have the best opportunities to maintain your level of fitness during your holiday - or to try your hand at a new sport. The numerous small roads provide an exciting challenge if you have a racer cycle; if you prefer mountain bike, there are many marked routes in the forests and dune plantations. If you’re looking for a competitive challenge, sign up for one of the season’s cycle races. Running shoes don’t take up much space in your luggage, so there’s no reason to drop your daily run just because you’re on holiday. On the contrary, there’s a lot of attractive scenery on a run through the dune plantation or along the beach. If you wish to test your form against others, there are plenty of fun runs and marathons during the summer and autumn months that you can take part in.

ANGLING

Anglers, look forward to great Fishing With several hundred kilometres of coastline and watercourses, as well as numerous fishing lakes and sea-fishing trips, there’s plenty to whet the appetite of any angler.

CONSERVATION PERIODS Conservation in freshwater Trout: 6 Nov. - 15 Jan. Pike: 1 - 30 April Conservation in saltwater Trout and salmon: 16 Nov. - 15 Jan. Plaice (female): 15 Jan. - 30 April Viviparous eelpout: 15 Sep.- 31 Jan.

RULES If you’re fishing with a rod and are 18-65 years old, you must have a fishing licence. It costs apx DKK 185 for one year, DKK 130 for one week and DKK 40 for one day. The fishing licence can be purchased at a number of local tourist offices or online at www.fisketegn.dk Remember that there are rules for where you can catch fish, when they can be caught and how big they have to be.

ANGLING

Fishing in the Land of Light is very varied. From the coast and breakwaters you can catch sea trout, cod, eel and various types of flatfish. The spring and early summer are great for herring, garfish and mackerel. The streams are teeming with trout, roach and eel, whilst the lakes are full of trout, perch and pike.

A fishing trip has both nerve-racking moments and periods of total relaxation. It’s this combination that makes angling such a great reliever of stress and a super holiday activity. You get lots of fresh air, the sun’s rays on your cheeks and the wind in your hair. You have time to enjoy the scenery, and your hunting gene is stimulated. And there’ll always be a few good stories to tell at the dinner table. The dinner table is the second part of the joy of fishing. Having got lucky on your fishing trip, spent time cooking up something special in the kitchen and anticipating your family or friends tasting your delicious fish dish, the holi day will be a sure-fire success. If you have children with you on a fishing trip, we recommend put & take and natural lakes. You can happily let your children fish here and the chances of a catch are good. Fishing from a breakwater is also good for kids, but remember to give them a life jacket to wear - the water is deep and the stones can be slippery.

SEA FISHING TRIPS are organized from Hirtshals to spots such as the Yellow Reef, where there’s a chance of catching very large cod and pollack.

BIRDS ON TOP

Birds on Top

The Land of Light is one of Europe’s best places for bird-lovers. The headland at Skagens Odde alone is visited every year by more than 350 species, and not least by many birds of prey. Migrating birds and birds of prey are the great attraction for ornithologists and others interested in birds. On a good day you can count 10-15 species of birds of prey on the migrating routes that gather in Skagen prior to the trip across the water. The high season to see birds of prey is the period from the end of March until the beginning of June, but you can experience the proud flyers at any time of the year. The autumn migration is a good time to spot waders and sea birds in particular. In the winter the bird table will attract

both resident birds and visitors from the north, including the Great Tit, the Bullfinch and the Waxwing. The headland at Skagens Odde is the very best place to spot birds, but there are many other locations that offer exciting bird attractions: Stensnæs near Voerså, Rubjerg Knude, Sæbygård Forest, the islands of Hirsholmene, Hirtshals Lighthouse and harbour, as well as the bog area at Råbjerg Mose to name but a few. Finally, there’s EagleWorld near Tuen, where during the season there are daily displays of falconry.

SKAGEN BIRD FESTIVAL Every year on the second weekend in May there’s a bird festival in Skagen. Go on a bird trip with the ornithologists!

Both the Danish Nature Agency and Toppen af Danmark have published folders about the birds you can see in the Land of Light. Pick up a folder at the tourist office!

PHOTO SAFARI

39

Photo safari in the Land of Light

We love pictures, but life is too short for boring pictures. In the following we give you some practical advice as to how to take better holiday pictures. And perhaps you’ll be so bitten by the photography bug, that it’ll become an important part of your holiday 4. SENSE FOR DETAILS AND PERSPECTIVE A picture of an entire building is often simply a neutral registration. If you get close to a detail – a door handle, an attic window or a rotten window frame, the picture will be much more interesting. Or try a change of perspective. Drop down onto one knee, lie on your stomach or crawl up somewhere to give yourself some height – you’ll be amazed how different and exciting your shot will be.

1. BAD WEATHER IS PHOTO WEATHER

When the sun is shining from a cloudless sky, it’s often better to lie on the beach than to take pictures. The light is harsh and white without atmosphere. A day with cloud formations in the sky often gives an exciting light with drama and adventure. Even in fog and dull weather pictures often acquire more soul!

5. WHICH STORY SHALL YOUR PICTURE TELL If you wish to tell the story of a family dinner with delicious shellfish and fish, then get in close and make sure the people and table are in focus. If the picture is to tell the story of a nice walk on the beach, you can - as is the case here - let the people move out of focus in the background with an exciting element in focus in the foreground. Two completely diffe rent stories will be told.

2. GET UP EARLY AND GO TO BED LATE

Choose the odd times of the day. The countryside at dawn has a very special atmosphere. The light is different, there’s dew on the grass and perhaps banks of fog above the meadow. Or in the evening when the shadows are long and shades of blue dominate.

3. GET UP CLOSE!

Too many pictures are taken from too far away. The subject is too small and gets lost in the surroundings. Zoom in or get so close that your subject fills the frame.

6. CROPPING AND EDITING YOUR PHOTO st photos from Send your be Light in the Land of and your holiday dk enafdanmark. to to foto@topp n io tit pe e com take part in th ttage. a summer co at ay st a in w ed tifi no ill be The winner w otos ph ed ct le se directly and on rly published will be regula . ge pa ok bo our face ram Tr y also Instag r# tu na es or rv #elske

Cropping a photo such that the composition is right and irrelevant details are omitted can make all the difference between a trivial holiday snapshot and a master piece. Buy an image editing program for your computer and go on a course that teaches you how to use such a program.

ART AND MUSEUMS

Be enriched by

Art and museums Cultural experiences give you something extra to take home with you – an extra dimension to your experience of a country or a region.

VENDSYSSEL KUNSTMUSEUM The museum is housed in the former textile factory, Bechs Klædefabrik, in the middle of the town. The permanent collection consists of artists with links to the region and focus on the countryside and landscapes in Vendsyssel. The collection includes Svend Engelund, Johannes Hofmeister, Poul Winther and Poul Anker Bech.

ART AND MUSEUMS

Cultural experiences give you something extra to take home with you – an extra dimension to your experience of a country or a region. Art has a special place in the Land of Light. This is due in no small part to the special light you find in Skagen, but also due to the huge contrasts in both the landscape and living conditions. The stormy sea, the windswept land and the modest, though proud, population of farmers and fishermen have fascinated artists for generations - and still do. The region is known for its diversity of artists and craftsmen that you can meet in galleries and workshops - or out in the countryside with their paints and easel. History gets under your skin and comes to life when you visit museums and castles. Medieval bishops and squires, the struggle against the migrating sand, small vessel trade with Norway, bunkers and big gun positions from the Second World War, as well as the development of the railway and railway towns to name just a few of the many themes. At the art museums you find the artists’ interpretations of the countryside, society and life in the region. Contemporary artists alongside the classics. 201 4

TAST Y ADVENTURES

Tasty adventures Mealtimes are among the highlights of a holiday. The food must be good, and it’s even better if there are exciting, local dishes which are a holiday adventure in themselves. Half of Europe eats fish from the waters surrounding the North of Denmark, and locally there’s often fish on the menu, preferably along with other delicious local ingredients, e.g. potatoes from Hulsig, root vegetables and vegetables from local growers and meat from cattle that have grazed in the dune landscape.
