City filled with vibrant urban culture

Visit Finland/Juho Kuva

Are you looking for a relaxing sea cruise, Finnish design products, top concerts, interesting sightseeing tours or an enjoyable gourmet experience? Helsinki and its intriguing districts offer plenty to see and do throughout the year. Every week is packed with a variety of events, from the fine arts to music and sports to exhibitions.

SEE The coastal city of Helsinki has earned a reputation as a pocket-sized and modern metropolis where visitors can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Eastern and western influences from the past 460 years can be seen everywhere. With these tips you can visit Helsinki’s versatile urban districts outside the city centre. Suomenlinna Suomenlinna is one of the world’s largest historical maritime fortresses and home to 850 city residents. With its museums, restaurants and events, the islands of Suomenlinna offer a unique experience for visitors of all ages throughout the year. Suomenlinna has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. The 15-minute ferry crossing to the fortress offers you a unique chance to admire and photograph Helsinki from the sea. www.suomenlinna.fi

Seurasaari Seurasaari is a popular museum island and recreational area located 15 minutes by bus from the city centre. The wooden buildings at the Open-Air Museum represent Finnish building traditions from the 18th to the 20th centuries. During the summer season various workshops and events at the museum present traditional handicrafts, customs, folklore and folk dancing. www.seurasaari.fi

More information about Helsinki and its main attractions in 11 languages can be found in the Helsinki – Visitors Guide. Pick it up from the Tourist Information or download at: www.visithelsinki.fi

Helsinki & Southern Finland

Kaivopuisto & nearby islands Kaivopuisto is Helsinki’s oldest and most popular park, as well as a prestigious embassy district. The proximity of the sea, the rocky cliffs and the green lawns offer many opportunities to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Along the shore

and on the nearby islands you can find several cafés and summer restaurants. Take a ferry to Uunisaari Island off the southern shore of Kaivopuisto Park or to Pihlajasaari Island and find sandy beaches and convenient services, attracting summer holidaymakers to swim and picnic. Kallio The former working-class district of Kallio is one of the most characteristic parts of Helsinki. Favoured these days by artists and students, the district’s bohemian bars and trendy boutiques attract visitors with a sense of adventure. Visit also the over 100-year-old Hakaniemi Market Hall and its outdoor market, where you will find everything from groceries and flowers to clothing and handicrafts for sale. Arabia The area of Arabia is a modern centre for the sciences, design and the arts, as well as a waterfront residential district. Home of the School of Art and Design and the 130-year-old Arabia porcelain factory, museum and gallery, Arabia continues to be a pioneer in modern Scandinavian design. www.arabia.fi

EXPERIENCE Helsinki’s attractive and unique character comes not only from its colorful past but also from its proximity to the sea, which offers an endless number of exciting activities. The city’s many green parks are popular gathering places for visitors and residents alike. Forest is also nearby and can be easily reached during a daytrip.

The fresh sea air, beautiful parks and excellent recreational facilities in Helsinki offer you unlimited possibilities to enjoy healthy activities throughout the year. Thanks to its compact size, Helsinki is ideal for walking and jogging, or you can just as easily enjoy the scenery by cycling or canoeing. While you are in Helsinki you can relax in a genuine Finnish sauna, which you can also combine in wintertime with a swim in the sea through a hole cut in the ice! The newest and most intriguing of Helsinki’s public saunas is the Kulttuurisauna “culture sauna” on the shoreline in Hakaniemenranta. From the terrace you can enjoy a beautiful view to the sea. www.kulttuurisauna.fi

Design District Fans of design must visit the Design District. The area is home to around 200 designer shops, interior decorating studios, antique dealers, clothing and jewellery boutiques, galleries, museums and restaurants. Members of the Design District network can be identified by the ”Design District Helsinki” sticker. The Design District is also home to the Design Museum (Korkeavuorenkatu 23). www.designdistrict.fi and www.designmuseum.fi

Tori Quarter - Torikortteli The Tori Quarter between the Market Square and Senate Square dates back originally to the 1700s. Handicrafts, Finnish design brands, eco design and much more. While shopping you can take a break at the charming Café Engel for a coffee and slice of bananachocolate cake. www.torikorttelit.fi

EAT & ENJOY Helsinki has around 1100 restaurants where you will find everything from gourmet delights to bistro treats. The latest trend is for young chefs to start their own small and unique gourmet and bistro style restaurants, such as Chef&Sommelier and Ask, the Michelinstarred Demo, Luomo and Postres. Helsinki’s idyllic island restaurants are open from May to the end of September and can be reached by ferry from the mainland. Try also one of the popular lunch or dinner cruises departing from the Market Square. Nearby Kallio and Kalasatama you can visit the centre of local food, The Abattoir - “Teurastamo”. Its historic redbrick buildings once served as the city abattoir and now form a pleasingly authentic courtyard surrounded by boutiques, restaurants and event venues. At the heart of the Abattoir is the Kellohalli restaurant and event venue, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner. HelsinkiMenu restaurants Finnish cuisine is typified by simplicity and purity. The easiest way to try local specialties is to order from the HelsinkiMenu, which is offered by 14 restaurants in the city centre. The menu varies according to restaurant and season. Lohja

At the Roots of Finnish Culture

Lohja is a small town in the midst of unspoilt, true Finnish Nature, only a half hour drive from Helsinki. Be inspired by the same landscape that inspired the creator of the Finnish national epic, The Kalevala. Visit the unusual Tytyri Mine Museum. Find greens for golfing, tracks to explore our forests and lakes for fishing or take part in events organised by local warm-hearted people.

SEE Tytyri Mine Museum The Tytyri Mine Museum is underground in a real limestone mine. Visitors get to experience the genuine feeling of mines as they explore the cool and damp mine galleries. Seeing the 100 metre wide and 100 metre deep mine gives a good picture of the huge scale of a limestone mine. Opening hours: For groups, on request all year round; for individuals, May-September. Address: Tytyrinkatu 2, Lohja. Tel. +358 (0)44 369 1309 www.tytyrinkaivos.fi

The Roots of Finnish Culture The abundance of historic places and museums bring the roots of Finnish culture to life in Lohja. Did you know that the Finnish mining industry started from Ojamon manor in Lohja? Or that the Paikkari Cottage in Lohja is the birth and childhood home of Elias Lönnrot, the creator of the Finnish national epic The Kalevala? You can also visit the war museum dedicated to Finland’s role in World War II, or learn about the life and people of Lohja in the Lohja Museum. Tel. +358 (0)44 369 1309 www.visitlohja.fi

The Southernmost Tip of Finland Visit the southernmost point of Finland! The Uddskatan nature reserve is located on the southernmost tip of continental Finland and is well worth a visit.

Lighthouses Bengtskär, the tallest lighthouse in the Nordic countries. Russarö, also called “the eye of Hanko”, decorates the coat of arms of Hanko, which is one of the most beautiful ones in Finland. Gustafsvärn is a small island located 3 km south-west of Hanko. Cruises available at summer from Hanko Eastern Harbour, and by prior arrangement.

Restaurants Living almost like on an island, surrounded by the sea, plays a major role on the tempting menus. Every season has its special delicacies. In hardly any other small town is there such a versatile selection of restaurants as in Hanko! Summer evenings are perfect for romantic moments sipping champagne on a seaside terrace, hand in hand.

The Spa Park The beautiful old wooden villas in the Spa Park were built at the end of 1800’s. The villas, designed by wellknown architects, represent a decorative wooden architecture. Some of the buildings still serve as guest houses and restaurants. The spa building was damaged during the Continuation War and was not rebuilt. Emigration memories During the years 1880–1930, nearly 250,000 Finns and Russians emigrated to America, Canada or Australia via Hanko. War memories The cape of Hanko was rented to the Soviet Union as a naval base under the peace treaty of Moscow (1940), which ended the Winter War. The Soviet Union brought a garrison of 30,000 men to Hanko. There are still ruins of fortifications in the centre of the town. Nature Nature in Hanko is incredibly varied. The landscape is characterized by magnificent cliffs and unspoilt stretches of fine white sand. Hanko has 130 km of coastline, of which 30 km are sandy beaches!

The Path of Love Nature path at the city centre, with a fantastic view over the sea and the town. There is also a big “devil’s churn” on the rocks. Museums & galleries This aesthetic environment feeds creativity. Visit the galleries, museums and exhibitions or meet with the artists in their ateliers. The Water Tower The tower stands 65 m above sea level, and there is a fantastic view in all directions over the cape of Hanko and the Baltic Sea. Outdoors Hanko is a dream destination for everybody who loves outdoors sports. Kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, tennis, golf and beach volleyball on the sandy beach- Hanko offers you everything you can wish for!

In fact, Hanko is a popular place for weddings, and many couples celebrate their wedding anniversary here year after year. This endearingly tender atmosphere is not found elsewhere…

In the old days, the phrase ‘the sweet life in Hanko’ was used to describe the blissful idleness, luxury, and the long and merry parties in the town. Hanko is still the ideal holiday destination for people who love life! Finland’s southernmost city is less than 2 hours from Helsinki.

Accommodation Would you like to stay in an old villa? The rooms are charming in a modest way. Many villas have operated as boarding houses over 100 years. Or maybe your choice is to experience a truly unique hotel designed in Jugendstil by the finnish architect Lars Sonck in 1898 and opened in 2012 after total renovation? You can also rent a house, make yourself at home! We have Finland’s broadest range of private accommodation to rent. Please visit www.hanko.fi/tourism for more information!
