A VERY WARM WELCOME TO OSLO! Surrounded by islands and forested hills, Oslo is located at the end of one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords. During its 1000 year old history from the Viking Age until the present day, people have looked to this place as a safe haven for trade, history and cultural enrichment. Today, Oslo has a population of more than 630 000 inhabitants, and is the nation’s financial, political and cultural centre. In the heart of the city Oslo is undergoing one of the largest development projects ever. The aim is to bring downtown Oslo and the fjord closer together. “Fjord City” is making space for museums, the Opera House, recreation areas, homes and restaurants in an area that was previously reserved for port activity and roads. Oslo’s latest attraction, Ekeberg Park, is absolutely worth a visit, and 2014 will see numerous events celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution. For Norwegians the Constitution and Constitution Day are important symbols of freedom and democracy and for visitors the 17th May children’s parade along Karl Johans gate is a spectacle not to be missed. Oslo also plays host to Euro Pride in 2014 (for the first time since 2005), which in itself is founded on democratic principles and human rights. The art and cultural life in Oslo reflect the fact that the city’s inhabitants come from all over the country and from all parts of the world. The city can offer unique sights and unforgettable experiences, many of which are presented in this guide. Useful information may also be found on www.visitoslo.com or by visiting our tourist information offices. On behalf of Oslo we would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors to our city. You will find a city full of surprises and excitement. We hope you’ll have fun discovering them!

EKEBERG PARK A sculpture and national heritage park for the people of Oslo and visitors looking for a unique experience Ekeberg Park is situated atop the beautiful, forested hill that forms the backdrop to Bjørvika and the Opera House on the east side of Oslo. Three kilometres of tracks and gravel roads criss-cross some 80 acres of forest and offer spectacular views of Oslo and the inner Oslo fjord. In addition to the rich, natural surroundings, Ekeberg Park has a little known but fascinating history ranging from one of Oslo’s earliest settlements stretching 10,000 years back in time, to interesting traces from the Second World War.
Where nature and history interact with art of international proportions So far, 30 sculptures and installations have been established in the forested landscape at Ekeberg. Seven of these works are site-specific and created by some of the world’s foremost contemporary artists. The process has involved them visiting the site, studying the history and landscape, and then creating works of art that not only give new vitality to the area but also contribute to internationalising the Oslo art scene considerably. The sculpture park’s artistic span – from classical masters via surrealism to more contemporary forms of expression – makes it unique and fascinating. The park will develop dynamically – it has space for as many as 80 works of art – so the visitor can expect to see more sculptures and installations in the years to come. With the addition of Ekeberg Park, Oslo has undoubtedly been given a solid cultural boost. Kongsveien 23 - www.ekebergparken.com

FACTS AND HISTORY There is some doubt as to what the name “Oslo” really means. “Os” can be understood to mean a range of hills or ridge or a reference to a Norse god, while “lo” might mean a field. Hence, Oslo can mean either “field of the gods” or “the field below the hill”. The first signs of urban settlement date back to around the year 900, and by 1300 Oslo was already an important trading centre. In 1624, King Christian IV decided to re-name it Christiania. At the beginning of the 19th century, Christiania was still a small town, but its population grew rapidly as a result of an economic surge half way through the century. Thus, from 1850 to 1900, the population of Christiana grew from 30 000 to 220 000. Following dissolution of the union with Sweden and Norwegian independence in 1905, rising national sentiment resulted in the city reverting to its original name of Oslo in 1925. Oslo is currently going through the biggest change the city has seen for decades. Roads and traffic are disappearing underground and the fjord and water’s edge are being opened up for recreation, cultural attractions and accommodation.

GREAT SKIING AND THE WORLD’S BEST APRÈS-SKI! Oslo is the only major city in Europe that can offer great skiing just minutes from the city centre by public transport. Oslo Vinterpark Tryvann is only 20 minutes from the city centre. The slopes usually open in December and stay open until Easter. The facility has both snowboard and ski slopes, as well as moguls and jumps. There are also more than 2700 km of prepared cross-country ski-trails in the Oslo marka (surrounding forest area) with no less than 68 ski cabins serving food and drink. For tobogganing try “Korketrekkeren”, Oslo’s most popular toboggan run, taking you down a 2 km long slope where the fall is fully 255 metres! If you want to test your ice skating skills you can go to Narvisen in the city centre or Frogner Stadium.
CHRISTMAS IN OSLO The city centre and Karl Johans gate, the main pedestrian street, are beautifully decorated for Christmas throughout December, helping make Christmas shopping in Oslo a joyous occasion. The Christmas market at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History in Bygdøy is very popular among locals and tourists alike, with traditional Christmas services being held in the 12th century stave church at the museum. At Bogstad Gård the main building is decorated for the festivities according to 19th century traditions, and at Bærums Verk you will find a Christmas decorated street with shops full of handicrafts and designer ware.

OSLO FOR CHILDREN! Taking a city break with small children can often be a challenge, but Oslo has just what it takes to keep the entire family busy. In summer, the fjord with its myriad of islands and active boating life is a fantastic experience, while an average water temperature of 20-22oC makes bathing and paddling along the shore surprisingly pleasant. Oslo has a broad selection of child-friendly museums to explore, and at Oslo Summerpark, visitors of all ages can test their strength, balance and endurance among the treetops. Tusenfryd, Norway’s largest amusement park is just a 20-minute bus ride away, and the forests surrounding the city are cross-crossed with cycle trails of varying grades of difficulty. At Holmenkollen, the lift to the top of the ski jump is always a breath-taking experience.

Music, theatre and art exhibitions have a central place in the urban landscape. Tjuvholmen, the new development attached to Aker Brygge, has already established itself as a place to visit art galleries, and the Opera House, which opened in 2008, has become one of the country’s most popular attractions, offering world-class opera and ballet. Oslo Concert Hall is home to the renowned Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra which regularly performs here, and for an evening with dining and entertainment, a dinner show at Wallmans Salonger is an excellent choice. GAY OSLO Oslo is one of the safest and most including capitals in the world. We call it OXLO, Oslo Extra Large, and as a visitor you’ll find the majority of nightclubs and restaurants always accommodating regardless of your sexuality. Shopping in Oslo is on a par with shopping in most major cities, and with the fjord, forests and parks on the doorstep, Oslo has a proximity to nature that makes us the envy of the world. Oslo offers a rich and diverse cultural life. The gay scene is broad and varied with venues such as the traditional London Pub, which opened in 1979. Otherwise you can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Elsker or SO, the place for “girls who like girls”. LLH Oslo and Akershus (LLH OA), the local association for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, is also a social-cultural hub, organising various activity groups within sport, music and art, as well as “seniorkafé” and “transkafé”. One of the great highlights of 2014 is when OsloPride plays host to EuroPride. From 20-29 June 2014, we’ll be showing Europe and the world how we celebrate diversity, freedom and our Pride. So make Oslo your gay destination in 2014, and enjoy a holiday you’ll never forget.

SHOPPING IN OSLO Oslo has a great selection of interesting shops, and young artists and designers are increasingly making Oslo their base. In addition to designer shops, there is, of course, a wide variety of department stores, boutiques, shopping districts with hundreds of outlets, charming antique shops, flea markets, exclusive international brands and local handicrafts. Along Karl Johan, the main pedestrian thoroughfare, you will find most high street chains and some of Oslo’s largest shopping centres such as Paléet, Eger, Byporten, Oslo City, Glasmagasinet and Steen & Strøm. Akersgata has over the past year become an exclusive shopping street, and the Vika/Aker Brygge districts (partly under renovation) are also worth visiting if you are looking for high quality products. Here you will find House of Oslo – Norway’s largest department store specialising in interior design. Between the Royal Palace and Vigeland Park are the attractive districts of Frogner and Majorstua with the popular shopping streets Hegdehaugsveien and Bogstadveien. Here you will find a good mix of exclusive designer boutiques and high street chain-stores. Grünerløkka, formerly a working class district by Akerselva, has gradually become one of Oslo’s more trendy districts where you can discover many small original shops selling fashion wear, ceramics, music, second-hand/vintage clothing, art and food.

OSLO – A CONVENTION CITY Oslo’s special attraction as a host city for major international congresses is primarily the unique combination of an intimate town and pulsating metropolis for which it is known. Oslo can also boast a “green” advantage in an international context due to its close proximity to fjord and forest. Local congress organisers are professional and cooperative and the infrastructure is well-developed; factors which are vital in putting Oslo on the map as a great convention destination.
CONVENTION BUREAU VISITOSLO We have considerable expertise when it comes to Oslo as a venue for meetings and congresses, and can assist with free advice and guidance for organisers during the planning process in order to make the event as successful as possible. THE OSLO REGION Akershus County surrounds Oslo like a green belt and offers great alternatives to the big city. North of Oslo parallel with Randsfjorden are numerous Viking sites, and a visit to the region would not be complete without a trip to Hadeland Glassworks. Just 30 minutes north of Oslo, the Varingskollen ski facility has one of the best terrain parks in the region. Southwest of Oslo is Bærum and Asker with a beautiful coastal strip consisting of hundreds of skerries, islets and holms. Here you will find a wide choice of hiking trails and bathing spots, the Henie Onstad Art Centre, Bærums Verk and Skaugum, the residence of the Crown Prince and Princess of Norway. Southeast of Oslo you can visit Norway’s largest amusement park, TusenFryd, or the charming Drøbak with its famous Christmas House.

CRUISE Cruise ships berth at one of two quays in Oslo. These are centrally located on both sides of Akershus fortress and offer easy access to all the city’s attractions. This contributes to Oslo’s growing popularity as a port of call for cruises to the Norwegian fjords, to popular destinations in the Baltic States and other northern European capitals. An increasing number of ships are using Oslo for overnight stays and also as an embarkation port for cruises. Cruise passengers to Oslo are offered a wide selection of excursions that range from traditional bus tours to the city’s popular attractions, to theme tours focusing on architecture and design, polar history, Norwegian masters in various art genres and sports performances. In addition, cycle tours in both the town and countryside have become popular, as have city walking tours. There is an extensive programme of activities for young families, active adults, and for those with special needs. The largest group of cruise passengers who visit Oslo is from Germany, closely followed by the UK, USA, Italy, France and Spain. Visitors to Oslo are generally highly satisfied, with more than 30% saying they will return to see more of the city on a future occasion. There is a dedicated Tourist Information Office for cruise passengers on the cruise quay, which opens when ships arrive. For more detailed information about Oslo as a cruise destination, please visit the following websites: www.visitoslo.com/cruise www.cruise-norway.no www.cruisebaltic.com www.oslohavn.no
