Spanning the width of the North of England and almost 2000 years of history, Hadrian’s Wall is an epic World Heritage Site. English Heritage is guardian of four of the best preserved forts on the Wall where you can unearth some amazing stories about Roman Britain. In Cumbria, visit Birdoswald Roman Fort and take a walk along the longest continuous stretch of the Wall then rest your weary legs in the tearoom and enjoy some homemade treats.

As the Cumbrian gateway to Hadrian’s Wall Country, Carlisle Castle stands proudly dominating Britain’s most besieged border city. Unlock stories, sieges and secrets in the exhibition, see amazing views from the ramparts and find out about the home of the Border Regiment in the Military Musem. Brougham Castle is set in one of the most picturesque riverside locations in Cumbria. Explore the complex passages and stairways and panoramic views of the Eden Valley from the top of the castle.

stott Park BoBBin Mill This humble little Bobbin Mill has a hugely interesting story. Nestled on the shores of Lake Windermere near Newby Bridge, Stott Park produced literally millions of bobbins. Hear about the Mill and its workers in the interactive family trail and see bobbins still being made today.

aWesoMe aBBeys Close to the wall is the tranquil Lanercost Priory, constructed from the familiar red stone, this Augustinian Priory suffered frequent attacks during the Anglo-Scottish wars. Furness Abbey in the western Lake District was once the second richest Cistercian abbey in England, visit the exhibition about the Abbey’s history.

Stop, unwind and let the world whiz by. Welcome to the county’s own special brand of cosseting and coddling. We have some of the best chill-out choices around, with the awardwinning Langdale Estate spa on wow-factor levels. Top of the range rules, from a 20m UV-treated pool, to tropical and deluge showers. Pampering in this part of the world knows no bounds. One of the country’s few remaining Victorian Turkish baths is here, so is a Buddhist retreat and even a heated forest swimming pool. Relax in the secluded splendour of Armathwaite Hall, spoil yourself in its spa or work-out in the gym. Lovely Lakeside Hotel also offers high-level luxury. If the concept of lying back in a heated woodland pool with a flute of chilled

champagne nearby seems far-fetched, you haven’t yet discovered Whinfell’s Aqua Sana. Thousands make their way to Conishead Priory, a world-respected Buddhist retreat, with a very different visitor experience. Spiritual pursuits and working visits at the giant Gothic edifice spell peace and purpose. Carlisle’s time-warp Turkish baths date back to the turn of the century. Never has taking the plunge been so full of eastern promise. It’s a delight! Be bowled-over by Byzantine inspired pillars, arches and gorgeous glazed tiles. Feel the heat, be bold in the cold, but no screams at the extremes. We indulge our guests in spas, treatment and steam rooms, pools, saunas and gyms, often in sumptuous surroundings. The only difficulty is deciding where to go and who to see. Slow down, surrender and be thoroughly spoilt.

Not only retail parks and high street stores. Our unique shopping experiences are also in historic barns, ancient market towns, cobbled streets, farmers’ markets and long-established family businesses.

With its elegant 18th century architecture, lanes called Salt Pie and Jingling, and eclectic, evocative shops, it’s a must. Old world, charismatic Sedbergh is one of only three book towns in the whole of the UK. Leave plenty of time to leaf through endless volumes and tomes.

Spend blissful times browsing and buying those perfect presents and irresistible specialities in alluring outlets, full of atmosphere and joie de vivre.

How about fine foods and fab gifts housed in Low Sizergh’s 17th century barn? There’s a tearoom with a twist, taking in the cows’ milking parlour.

Take Lakeland, started in a garage and now boasting 64 nationwide stores, including its Windermere flagship, bursting with creative kitchenware.

Penrith is where to find toffee and fudge favoured by the royal family, a food trail and much more. At nearby Rheged, you’ll see 10 very different shops nestled under Europe’s biggest grass roof.

And then there’s Hawkshead, a national company with its vast outdoor clothing range firmly rooted in the Lakes. Wherever you are, waterproofs and walking gear are never far away. Don’t let any retail therapy session bypass picture postcard Kirkby Lonsdale.

Relish a retail rendezvous where service and quality come with our distinctive Cumbrian flair. Shop until you drop, you’re in excellent hands. To find out more visit golakes.co.uk

“A great day out– whatever the weather!” Established in 1973 The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway is a family run business in the heart of the Lake District. Operating daily from April to November, carefully maintained steam locomotives haul traditional carriages along 3.5 miles of former ‘Furness Railway’ branch line from the Victorian Station at Haverthwaite to Lakeside at the southern tip of Lake Windermere. From Lakeside, connections are available with Windermere Lake Cruises to Bowness or Ambleside. Haverthwaite Station Restaurant proudly serves a selection of homemade meals, cakes and snacks and our famous homemade giant fruit scones.Visitors to the restaurant can soak up the atmosphere in front of a roaring coal fire on those frosty, autumn mornings or enjoy watching the trains pass by whilst eating an ice cream from the elevated picnic area or platform on a sunny, summer afternoon. We even serve our own locally brewed “Fairburn Ale” named after our two sister Fairburn engines and also use the ale to make our delicious Fairburn Ale Cumberland Sausage and Fairburn Ale Beef Burgers. The Licensed Station Restaurant at Haverthwaite is in relaxed and traditional setting and can comfortably accommodate 60 people. Haverthwaite Station is home to the line’s collection of lovingly restored steam and diesel locomotives, which visitors can view in ‘The Engine Shed’.The Station Gift Shop boasts an array of gifts, books and souvenirs and The Woodland Adventure Play Area with climbing structures, nets and slides is sure to provide endless enjoyment for every child!

taste cumbria Cumbria’s food scene offers an exciting juxtaposition of culture and heritage, style and originality. It is no coincidence that we are home to the country’s number one restaurant. At the heart of what we do is a strong integrity and link to our beautiful landscape. From the finest of fine dining to the cosiest of pub food, we like to do things our own way. The living larder that surrounds us acts as inspiration to our chefs, many of whom forage in the local countryside for the most deliciously fresh wild herbs, nuts, fungi, fruits and berries. Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume is a shining beacon of Cumbrian success – his whole restaurant, from the 2 Michelin-starred food you eat, to the crockery, art work and masonry that surround you, are authentically, unashamedly Cumbrian.

For more information about everything that’s great about Cumbrian food and drink, please visit tastecumbria.com and brewedincumbria.com Bon appétit!

rogan & co. Simon Rogan has appointed Kevin Tickle (previously Sous Chef and Head Forager at L’Enclume) as Head Chef at Rogan & Co, in Cartmel, Cumbria. Since 2005, Kevin has worked his way up from Chef de Partie through to Sous Chef at L’Enclume, and is thrilled to be taking on the role as Head Chef at Rogan & Co. From January 2014, Kevin will use his own signature style to develop the menus at Rogan & Co, but keeping in line with L’Enclume’s style and techniques, although in a more simplified way to suit the à la carte menu format. Meat will take a more prominent position, and there will be an increased focus on locally foraged produce. living

heritage Our ancestors knew a grand design when they saw one, creating castles, halls, fabulous houses and horticultural masterpieces. Building in unparalleled places, their legacies live on, prized visitor magnets, with history, intrigue and sights set to scintillate. A hundred trees and bushes up to three centuries old are clipped into topiary triumphs at Levens Hall. The living sculptures are the world’s most ancient. Lowther Castle casts a magical spell with its unbelievable ‘ruins’ & 130 acres of rediscovered gardens, hidden from public view for over 70 years. When visiting a much-loved stately home, you need time to explore lavish interiors and elegant gardens. Don’t miss Holker Hall’s award winning attractions and exceptional countryside. The Pennington family has lived at Muncaster Castle for 800 years, surviving turbulent historic times and some very troublesome ghosts.

Sizergh Castle and the Stricklands go hand in hand down the centuries. Henry VIII’s surviving wife Katherine Parr was a relative. Enjoy ancient artefacts and tales aplenty. You can even get a glimpse behind closed doors with Cumbria’s Living Heritage group. It’s ‘through the keyhole’ stuff, you’ll love it! The Romans were discovering our lovely locations 2,000 years ago. They’ve left masses to do and see.

You can explore the extensive remains of Birdoswald Roman Fort and the longest continuous remaining stretch of Hadrian’s Wall at this magnificent World Heritage Site. You can also discover the Senhouse Roman Museum cited on dramatic cliffs overlooking the Solway, home to an internationally important collection of Roman Altar Stones. Don’t forget Carlisle Castle, a sturdy fortress dominating the city for nine centuries, or the truly remarkable Furness Abbey. History, boring, don’t believe it! To find out more visit golakes.co.uk

Discover, if you dare, the most haunted room, check out the world owl centre, but don’t get lost in the vole maze.

Adjacent to the 12th Century de Boyville stronghold, Kirklinton Hall was built from the stone of the Castle. Begun in the 1670’s, extended in the 1870’s and ruined in the 1970’s, it has been a Restoration Great House, an RAF base, a gangsters’ gambling den and worse. Walk in the footsteps of Norman Knights, Cavalier Commanders, Victorian Plutocrats and the Kray twins. Now, Kirklinton Hall and its Gardens are being restored by the Boyle Family to its former glory. It is also the official home to SlowFood Cumbria and is available for weddings and events. ‘Spectacularly sinister ruin’ – Pevsners Buildings of England Open: 1st Apr-30th Sep 12pm-5pm, Sun-Fri. Open on Saturdays for Public and Private Events. Kirklinton Hall Limited | Kirklinton Hall, Kirklinton, Carlisle, CA6 6BB Tel: 016977 48850 | www.kirklintonhall.co.uk | info@kirklintonhall.co.uk

Find out why Proust, Tolstoy and Ghandi all rated Ruskin. His fine house, Brantwood, overlooking Coniston and the lofty Old Man, is testimony to the great thinker’s vision, talent and influence. Galleries and museums are us. How about Abbot Hall Art Gallery in Kendal or the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry for starters? Nestling on the shores of Derwentwater, Theatre by the Lake has its own professional company. Eager audiences wait in anticipation for acclaimed plays and performances, shows and concerts. 1

We even have a festival of street arts. Mintfest brings performers from all over the world – and some truly remarkable sights. The curtain’s up, it’s all there for you to applaud.

indulge be looked after Some of our finest country houses built by the entrepreneurs of the day are now classic hotels, oozing sumptuous style and chic. This is where you’ll find luxury and charm, character around every corner and unsurpassed comfort. Arts and Crafts gems, historic halls, Edwardian piles, Gothic greats, the decision is yours, being looked-after is bliss. One of Cumbria’s most ambitious projects, Askham Hall, dates back to the 1200s. A luxurious, intimate, unpretentious home from home which is up-to-date, full of charm and somewhere you can kick off your wellies at the front door. On the other hand, how could you not be swayed by Rum Doodle? It admits to offering ‘a little bit of luxury, whimsy and a whole lot of fun’. It’s vintage and value and very, very different.

Twenty-five years, top national awards and accolades are a family’s testimony to their Gilpin achievement. Whatever the occasion, they set the scene, it’s memory-making in the extreme. Our fantastic pubs and inns need no introduction. Stay in hostelries steeped in past times, ponder their names, soak up the mood, enjoy their place at the heart of our communities. The Plough at Lupton is archetypal contemporary, while Hawkshead’s Queens Head Inn and Restaurant is ideal for exploring the celebrated village. Affordable options abound, costconscious B&Bs and Guest Houses can be found in all areas of the Lake District, Cumbria. Spoilt for choice, you bet!

self catering look after yourself This is the stuff memories are made of, DIY holidays with a difference where imagination knows no bounds.

How about a shepherd’s hut surrounded by peaceful, pond-side meadows at Crake Trees Manor, joined in the Eden Valley by yurt and Romany caravan experiences.

Glamping is glorious in a Mongolian yurt, gypsy caravan or tepee and playing lord of the manor in a stunning Edwardian country house just perfect.

Take a trek back to our rich industrial heritage and consider a Coppermines and Coniston Lake District Holiday cottage. Many are over 100 years-old, boast log fires, antiques and some even have their own private jetties.

Freedom to do your own thing is matched by awesome locations and surprisingly surreal options. Camping at Ullswater’s award-winning The Quiet Site has plenty to shout about, while the Tranquil Otter is synonymous with luxury lodges. A house called Halecat has it all – historic links, stunning surroundings and rooms to revel in. There’s Hill of Oaks too, a five-star lodge and caravan park with a whole mile of Windermere shoreline.

Pet-friendly farm Thornthwaite offers cottages, caravans, camping barn and even a ‘stone tent’. Tempted by tepees? Find them at nine acre Woodclose Park. Bolt-holes on a budget bring their own brand of bonhomie, with camping barns across the county costing less than a tenner a night. Set in some of the most superb scenery around. Looking after yourself has never been this good.

quality accommodation Improving quality is important in The Lake District and Cumbria. Tourism businesses throughout the county strive to provide the highest standards to ensure a memorable visit. All accommodation featured in this guide has been assessed to the National Quality Assurance Standard and star-rated, or assessed under our local initiative, Quality Cumbria. National Quality Assurance Standard There are two national assessing bodies, VisitEngland and the AA. Both work to National Quality Assurance standards and use independent, impartial assessors. Properties are given a quality rating of 1-5 stars and show the Enjoy England Quality Rose logo (VisitEngland) or the AA logo. These quality ratings indicate the overall accommodation standard, cleanliness, ambience, hospitality, service and quality of food. Generally, the higher star rating, the higher the quality and the greater the range of facilities and services offered. Star ratings are also accompanied by a category which describes the assessment criteria and includes Hotels, B&Bs, Self Catering, Hostels and Holiday Parks. For example, a four star hotel will have greater levels of service and facilities than a four star B&B. Hotels Hotels have to be licensed, offer dinner at least five nights a week (unless a Metro Hotel) and all rooms must be en-suite or have a private bathroom. Categories include Hotel, Country House Hotel, Small Hotel, Town House Hotel, Metro Hotel. Guest Accommodation Star ratings for Guest Accommodation reflect the visitor expectations of this sector, where quality is seen as more important than facilities and services. Higher star ratings are achieved by providing certain additional facilities and services. Categories include Guest Accommodation, Bed & Breakfast, Guest House, Farmhouse, Inn and Restaurant with Rooms. Self-Catering Self-catering accommodation is assessed on layout, design, quality and range of the kitchen equipment, quality and comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and cleanliness. Categories include Self-Catering, Serviced Apartments and Approved Caravan Holiday Home. Hostels Hostels provide safe, budget-priced accommodation for young people, families and larger groups. Higher rated hostels can often provide en suite rooms. The categories include Hostel, Group Hostel, Activity Accommodation, Bunkhouse (no star rating) and Camping Barn (no star rating). Holiday, Touring and Camping Parks Ratings are awarded for the overall quality with five stars being reserved for parks of exceptional quality. The categories include Holiday Park, Holiday Villages, Touring Park and Camping Park. Self-Catering Agencies Self-catering agencies advertising in this guide have at least 50% of their cottages assessed by VisitEngland or are a Quality Cumbria accredited Agency.

96

accolades VisitEngland gives Gold and Silver awards to hotels and guest accommodation that not only achieve their overall rating but also provide exceptional quality throughout; particularly in service and hospitality. VisitEngland Breakfast award recognises those hotels and B&Bs where the owners, managers, chefs and staff have gone the extra mile to ensure the breakfast will exceed expectations. The AA Gold Stars are awarded to the very best of Guest Accommodation within the three, four and five star ratings. The AA give red stars to select hotels in each star grading. These are awarded ‘Inspectors’ Choice’ status. AA inspected restaurants are given Rosettes (one to five) annually for the quality of their food. For more information about quality assessments see golakes.co.uk/qualitygrading or QiT www.qualityintourism.com Tel: 0845 300 6996 Email: qualityintourism@uk.g4s.com AA: Tel: Email:

Quality Cumbria In addition to VisitEngland and AA ratings, you will also see the Quality Cumbria logo in this guide. Quality Cumbria is a local assessment initiative in partnership with VisitEngland. Although not star rated it is accredited to ensure that accommodation meets National Quality Assurance Standards and should be clean, pleasant, comfortable and fit for purpose. For more information about Quality Cumbria call Cumbria Tourism on 01539 822222. Awaiting Inspection At the time of going to press, accommodation displaying AWAITING INSPECTION has applied for participation in one of the above assessment schemes. Check with the business directly to find out what grading they have achieved or call Cumbria Tourism. Accommodation Prices Prices for all listed accommodation include tax and service charges. Serviced accommodation: The prices show the minimum and maximum charge for bed and breakfast, per person, per night, sharing a twin or double room. Self-catering: Prices are per unit, per week and show the lowest price, the minimum and maximum charge per unit, or, where there is a choice of units, the minimum and maximum price for the smallest and largest. Quality Assured Visitor Attactions Visitor attractions displaying this sign have been assessed by VisitEngland for the standard of customer care, hospitality and service as well as the standard of the toilets, shop and café, where applicable. National Code of Practice for Visitor Attractions Many visitor attractions are committed to this voluntary code operated by VisitEngland. It demonstrates a commitment to quality and an agreed industry-wide standard.

Green and Environmental Accreditations Cumbria Tourism recognise a range of green and environmental initiatives. These schemes and accreditations show a commitment to reducing impact on the environment and managing resources more efficiently. Fairtrade There are a number of businesses across Cumbria that support Fairtrade. G Fairtrade tea and coffee (at least) are provided in the dining room and bedrooms, exclusively or optionally. G They are committed to the principles of Fairtrade. G They have literature available on Fairtrade Compliments, Comments and Concerns We welcome feedback about your visit to The Lake District and Cumbria. Should a problem arise during your stay, whenever possible, discuss it with the management of the property first. The problem may be rectified without delay. If this doesn’t work, professional advice is available from a variety of sources. For full details about the help available to you please visit golakes.co.uk/complaint.aspx or call Cumbria Tourism on 01539 822222. accessibility Cumbria offers many opportunities for disabled visitors to enjoy this unique county. Many accommodation providers, restaurants and attractions cater for disabled visitors and will happily accommodate specific requirements. National Accessible Scheme If you have particular mobility, visual or hearing needs, look for the following symbols. These show that they have met VisitEngland’s National Accessible Scheme criteria.

≠ “ ‘ « c a b For a full explanation of these symbols, see visitengland.org Access Statements All of the accommodation featured in this guide has been assessed by VisitEngland, the AA or Quality Cumbria. It is an assessment condition that accommodation providers have an Access or Accessibility Statement. This is a written, clear, accurate and honest description of the facilities and services available. It will help you make an informed decision about whether that business can meet your needs. To plan the perfect stay, discuss your needs with the chosen establishment before making your booking. Further Information There is a wealth of information for visitors with disabilities. CoMManding Castles
