in central Oxford, college gardens nestle behind high walls; the botanic garden, Britain’s oldest Botanical Garden fronts the river Cherwell where novice punters tangle with their poles and paddles. blenheim palace’s rolling parkland, landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown, includes the Great Lake and Cascade, contrasting with the formal rose Garden and intimate Secret Garden recently restored by the 11th duke of Marlborough. The magnificent herbaceous border, working apple orchards, programme of courses and splendid tea shop are just some of the attractions.

Castles have played an important role in Oxfordshire’s history. Most Oxfordshire museums run family-friendly events – many, such as the pitt Rivers, are famous for their appeal to children. Adults and children alike love to ride behind full-sized restored steam locomotives at didcot Railway centre or study the intricate detail of the miniature landscape at pendon Museum. Rain or shine, cotswold wildlife park is a delight – its gardens no less than the animals in its care. For something different, try the UK’s only crocodile zoo at crocodiles of the world. Younger children particularly enjoy interacting with farm animals at farmer gow’s and completing the maize maze at Millets farm, or try fairytale farm, a learning and sensory wonderland for all the family.
After admiring the magnificent blenheim palace, a short train ride takes the family to the wonderful adventure playground and butterfly house. And if the teens are with you, the promise of a trip to go Ape at Wendover should guarantee goodwill. Head over to Henley-on-Thames and visit the River & Rowing Museum with galleries dedicated to rowing, the River Thames, the history of Henley and the superb Wind in the Willows exhibition. Whilst in Oxford, take a trip to Oxford castle Unlocked and meet the inhabitants and prison warden. Or, if you want to take it easy, then relax on a 45 minute river cruise or venture on the open-top bus tours and see the delights of Oxford.

The Railway Centre recreates the golden age of the Great Western Railway with a fine collection of over 20 steam locomotives, many housed in the original (fully working) engine shed, a collection of passenger coaches and freight wagons. There is a typical country station and signal box, and a recreation of Brunel’s original broad gauge railway including a broad gauge Transfer Shed dating from 1857. The GWT Museum & Archive contains an impressive range of smaller items covering all aspects of the history and operation of the Great Western Railway. Travel in 1930s carriages behind a Great Western steam engine on the main demonstration line or in a 1940s Railcar operating on a sleepy rural branch line. Travel back in time on Brunel’s broad gauge railway in style with ‘Fire Fly’, a replica of the original locomotive built in 1840.
