KIDS AND FAMILIES
KIDS’ FAVOURITES Gothenburg is ideal for family holidays. There are plenty of fun things to do, and because the city is so compact it takes very little time to get from the breakfast table to the highlight of the day. Many of these activities are just as much fun for adults as for kids.
BUTTERFLIES IN YOUR TUMMY Liseberg is the greatest amusement park in Scandinavia and is filled with exciting rides, activities and music for all the family. You can easily spend a whole day here and there is something for everyone, from gentle carousels to stomachchurning thrill rides – including the new Helix roller coaster. Covering seven floors, this is the place to see exotic animals, explore the rainforest, the giant aquarium and do your own experiments. You can even watch the sharks feeding in the giant aquarium. universeum.se
PLAYTIME AT ALFIE’S The old seed shop at the Garden Society of Gothenburg (Trädgårdsföreningen) has been transformed into Alfie Atkins’ Cultural Centre (Alfons Åbergs Kulturhus). The setting and the activities are based on the books by Gunilla Bergström, including theatre and storytelling sessions. There is also a café here. alfonskulturhus.se

HAGA AND LINNÉ DISTRICTS Haga Nygata’s well-preserved timber buildings house everything from cafés and hatmakers to jewellers. Stroll through streets with a smalltown feel up to the lookout point at Skansen Kronan or head for leafy Slottsskogen city park. The restaurants of Linnégatan and bohemian bars of Andra Långgatan are also just a short walk away.
G ÖTA Ä LV INNERSTADEN
AVENYN & VASA HAGA & LINNÉ
AVENYN AND VASA The bars and restaurants jostle for space along the main boulevard, Avenyn, and the nightlife attracts a diverse mix of people. Around Götaplatsen you will find Gothenburg Museum of Art (Göteborgs Konstmuseum), the City Theatre (Stadsteatern) and Gothenburg Concert Hall (Konserthuset) and just a stone’s throw from there is the city’s main events area. At the top of Avenyn stands the statue of Poseidon. Vasastan draws you in with its great variety of art galleries, cafés and restaurants.
MAJORNA
FIND YOUR FAVOURITE DISTRICT We take a closer look at some of the most distinctive districts of Gothenburg. Some are close to the centre, while others are a little way off the usual tourist routes. Find more information and tips a little further on in the guide.
10
NORDSTADEN Just a few hundred metres from the big Nordstan shopping centre you will find the Old City Hall (Kronhuset) – the oldest building in the city, built in 1654. The small buildings around the cobbled courtyard are now home to glassblowers, a chocolate factory and various craft studios. Down by the river is the Göteborg Opera (Göteborgsoperan). A familiar landmark is the statue of the city’s founder King Gustaf Adolf.
MAJORNA Near the abutment of Älvsborg Bridge (Älvsborgsbron) stands Röda Sten contemporary art centre, while the Maritime Museum and Aquarium is close to the centre. In between, the district has a mix of inviting neighbourhoods and imposing "governor’s houses". Head towards Mariaplan for a coffee or to shop for interior design goods alongside the residents of Majorna.
NORRA ÄLVSTRANDEN The former shipyard areas of Lindholmen, Sannegårdshamnen and Eriksberg have been transformed to provide modern housing and offices. The district that stretches towards Älvsborg Bridge in the west is best explored by taking a walk along the quayside, or from the upper deck of the Älvsnabben harbour ferry.

THE COAST & ISLANDS
EXPLORE Take a deep breath of fresh sea air. The coast and islands around Gothenburg are a unique setting where the craggy shore meets leafy nature, dotted with fishing communities and opportunities to sample gourmet cuisine. The only traffic you will see are flatbed mopeds, bikes and the occasional wheelbarrow. This is a relaxing setting and the frequent ferry service from Saltholmen makes it easy to get around. You can get to the northern archipelago by car or bus, and explore a mix of large and small islands. Several of the islands are linked by bridges after you take the ferry from Lilla Varholmen to Ă–ckerĂś.

NIGHTLIFE
FEEL THE VIBE
NIGHTLIFE
Night may have fallen, but the day is still young. See an opera, a theatre performance, a concert or meet up with friends before letting the DJ entice you on to the dance floor at one of many clubs.
CLUB LIFE Gothenburg’s main boulevard, Avenyn, is lined with restaurants and clubs with dance floors and bars spread over several levels. Everyone comes here to dance through the night, from club kids to besuited office workers. goteborg.com BAR LIFE Andra Långgatan is the hub for alternative nightlife. Often a little less expensive and more relaxed. This is a chance to meet up with friends, enjoy a beer or a pub meal. goteborg.com THEATRE AND SHOWS Gothenburg City Theatre, at the top of the main boulevard, Avenyn, is the oldest in Sweden. Just a stone’s throw from here is Lorensberg Theatre, which often performs newly written Swedish plays. In a former sheet metal workshop on the other side of the Göta River (Göta Älv) you’ll find its little sister, Backa Theatre, which caters to a younger audience. There are also show restaurants, such as Kajskjul 8 and Rondo at Liseberg amusement park. kajskjul8.se, liseberg.se/rondo lorensbergsteatern.se, stadsteatern.goteborg.se OPERA AND CONCERTS The Göteborg Opera (Göteborgsoperan) by Lilla Bommen harbour was opened in the mid-1990s and hosts performances of opera, dance and musicals. Gothenburg Concert Hall (Konserthuset) by Götaplatsen is home to the city’s Symphony Orchestra, which performs around 100 concerts each year here and has been appointed the National Orchestra of Sweden. gso.se, sv.opera.se

LIVE MUSIC Concerts are frequently performed at the Nefertiti jazz club, know locally as Nef, and at the new Pustervik club stage. Check each venue’s website for dates and times. Gothenburg is also home to Jazzhuset, voted the most significant venue in Swedish pop history. Stora Teatern is another venerable setting for music and culture. See the relevant website for the forthcoming programme. jazzhuset.se, nefertiti.se, pustervik.nu, storateatern.se

3 VIEWS ON CREATIVITY
Much of the inspiration comes from the people here in Gothenburg …
THE CREATIVE CITY Gothenburg’s proud heritage has grown out of the spaces between the harbour cranes, the factory floors and tram tracks. Historically, Sweden’s second city was put on the global map by Volvo Cars, the shipyards and technical innovation, but in recent years local fashion designers, musicians and artists have been breaking ground far beyond the country’s borders. As a music city Gothenburg has a tradition of hosting big events, but you are just as likely to end up in front of an intimate club stage as a big arena. Gothenburg is home to many music export successes, local indie bands and musicians from widely differing genres. So it is not just coincidence that brings music lovers from near and far to Slottsskogen city park in August for the Way Out West festival each year.
38
The School of Design and Crafts (HDK), Tillskärarakademin and the Academy of Music and Drama are nurseries for new talent. Many creative entrepreneurs set up base in Gothenburg and each year the Fresh Fish competition reveals new talents in fashion design. The heritage of the coast and islands and the music scene are sources of inspiration that have left their imprint on local brands such as Emma och Malena, Nudie Jeans and Velour.
The creative soul of Gothenburg puts the city on the map in everything from fashion and design to art and music. We asked a few high-profile figures from the culture and design scene what they feel makes Gothenburg special.
MORE LOCAL DESIGN AT GOTEBORG.COM
ELIN HEDMAN, ORGANISER AND PR CONSULTANT, ON WHY THERE ARE SO MANY SUCCESSFUL MUSICIANS:
“I believe it’s something of a snowball effect. The success of others inspires more people to set up bands, record companies and clubs. Gothenburg’s wide choice of venues to play gives a lot of people the changes to arrange performances and start clubs.“
PALLE STENBERG, CEO, NUDIE JEANS, ON LOCAL INSPIRATION:
“Much of the inspiration comes from the people here in Gothenburg and clearly this also works internationally. The end product would probably not have been the same if we had been in Paris or Milan.“
ISABELLA NILSSON, MUSEUM DIRECTOR AT GOTHENBURG MUSEUM OF ART (GÖTEBORGS KONSTMUSEUM), WHAT SETS THE CULTURE SCENE APART:
“Gothenburg is a coastal city, and as such it has been influenced by the cultures of many other countries over the years. The city grew up as a community where diverse individuals and groups coexisted and I believe this is the foundation for a creative setting. Their interactions have encouraged the development of very different cultural scenes in music, theatre and art – the cultural space. These have then collided and complemented each other in various ways in a constant conversation that permeates the city.“

Many of our hotels hold an environmental diploma awarded by the City of Gothenburg or carry the Nordic Ecolabel. Gothenburg is one of the greenest hotel cities in the world and was voted the best ecotourism destination in Europe back in 2011. Many hotels are so close to the city centre that almost everything is within walking distance, from shops to museums and galleries, entertainment and restaurants. Many of the hotels are so special that they are worth the journey in their own right. It may be the food, the architecture, the interior or the full package that attracts you. Wherever you choose to stay your hotel will be part of the experience. You can also find hostels, cottages and camping here. 46
