Built on 13,659 posts Koninklijk Paleis
Koninklijk Paleis and Nationaal Monument In 1648, the magnificent building on Dam Square was erected as the city hall, but since 1808 it has been used as the Koninklijk Paleis (‘Royal Palace’). Today the palace mainly has a repre sentative function and if the members of the Royal Family are not using it then it is opened to the public and there are regular exhibitions there. Also on Dam Square is the Nationaal Monument, which each year is a central focal point of the national Remembrance Day. Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 147 tel. +31 (0)20 - 620 40 60 www.paleisamsterdam.nl
Anne Frank House For more than two years Anne Frank was in hiding with her family in the back part of the premises at Prinsengracht 263, where Anne’s father had his company. The rooms are no longer furnished, but they still exude the atmosphere of the period of hiding. Here you can view quotes from the diary, photos, film images and original items as well as taking a virtual tour through a furnished Anne Frank House in the multi media room. Amsterdam’s Jordaan is undoubtedly the district most sung about, most written about and most romanticized in the whole of the Netherlands! And rightly so, for it is fit to burst with lovely little shops, cosy restaurants and trendy hotspots. Veer from the beaten track, get lost in the little alleys and a whole world will open up to you.

More than just lending books Openbare Bibliotheek
Noordermarkt Two days a week there is a market in the Jordaan at the foot of the Noorderkerk. On Saturdays you can buy organic produce and rummage among bric-a-brac; on Mondays stylists come from far and wide for the range of vintage clothing. Always nice, as it is in the surrounding cafĂŠs as well.
Flower market The Netherlands is famous for its flowers, so a flower market in the heart of the capital city is logical. At the market on the Singel between the Koningsplein and the Muntplein, the finest plants, flowers, bulbs and souvenirs are sold. The market stalls are set on boats lying in the canal. This is a remnant of the time when all flowers and plants at this market were still supplied by water from outside the city on a daily basis.

Raïnaraï
Café/restaurant Amsterdam is established in an old factory building on the former waterworks site. Apart from the fact that the site is an impressive one (high, big!), the dining is universally praised due to its simplicity. The place is teeming with playing children in the early evenings, simply because it is highly suitable for them.
Raïnaraï Westergasfabriek is a nomadic restaurant with Algerian cuisine. Nomads are constantly on the move and consequently have to use whatever is available at the time. World-famous Amsterdam School Museum Het Schip
Silodam The Silodam is a modern apartment block on the embankment between the Houthavens (‘Timber Docks’) and the River IJ. The striking design is by renowned architects MVRDV and reminds one of a chest of drawers with all kinds of different drawers, owing to the seventeen different types of façade coping used.
Museum Het Schip Museum Het Schip (‘The Ship’) is established in the world-famous Arbeiderspaleis (‘Workers’ Palace’) on the Spaarndammerplantsoen and constitutes a highlight of the expressionistic architectural style the Amsterdam School. The construction was innovative due to its comprehensive architecture, even if they became fully fledged flats for the workers that used to live in hovels at the start of the last century. The museum shows the restored post office with its carefully restored interior by Michel de Klerk. You can also visit the museum apartment, the exhibition on sources of inspiration and the famous tower. There is a lunch room and a museum garden with an exhibition of Amsterdam School street furniture.

The Staatsliedenbuurt came into being shortly after 1900. Its small alleyways and unusual façade decorations lend the area a touch of character. Whereas twenty years ago the area was wellknown for its rowdy squatters’ riots, it has now fully recovered. Just over from the terminus of tram line 10 is the eco-district, where no cars are allowed. All buildings have been built in accordance with ecological principles surrounded by as many gardens as possible. In the middle is the famous café/restaurant Amsterdam.
Hammam Amsterdam
Hotel de Windketel
Since time immemorial Hammam has been a place where one can relax and wash oneself or each other. Hammam Amsterdam’s door is always open to women of all nationalities and cultures. Relaxation, tranquility, beauty and good food are guaranteed during a visit to these oriental baths.
In the eco-district next to the water tower there is a small octagonal turret. In this Windketelgebouw (‘air chamber building’) there used to be a steel tank serving as an air valve. It contained water and air, and if a pump suddenly failed, an air lock would cushion the wave of pressure. Residents around the square bought this little building and turned it into a one-bedroom hotel. For € 300 for two nights you can stay in this historic building, which has three floors and a fully furnished interior. It even contains a bath!

Blond
In a converted 19th-century school gymnasium is the restaurant of the College Hotel. Just like the rest of the hotel, everything here is stylish. In this light, open space you can eat wonderful, playful dishes which represent a different take on Dutch cuisine. Don’t forget that this, like the rest of the hotel, is a training centre for catering students. Now and then mistakes can be made – this is how they learn. The hotel’s bar is also a popular hangout for the people of Amsterdam.
Blonde friends Femque and Janneke make gifts under the name Blond Amsterdam. Their attractive drawings combined with funny text work well on all kinds of products. In this cheerful shop in De Pijp they are all on display, from handpainted teapots and mugs to school exercise books, clothing and even patchwork quilts. Kingfisher
Lovers of art can indulge themselves close to De Pijp. For just over the Hobbemakade lies the Museumplein (‘Museum Square’), where leading museums like the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum (temporarily closed for renovation) and the Rijksmuseum are situated. It is good to while away the time between visits by sitting on the grass and around the Museumplein’s pond.
Mamouche At Mamouche you eat North African dishes with Western European influences. This cosy little restaurant – which has modern furnishings but also things like candles and rose petals to generate the right atmosphere – has been a favourite of many an Amsterdam resident for years now. Here you can eat a tasty tagine, but also more exquisite dishes like kerkanaise: a salad of raw tuna, oysters and scallops. Quellijnstraat 104 tel. +31 (0)20 - 670 07 36 www.restaurantmamouche.nl
Barça
Kingfisher is something of a lounge for the modern resident of De Pijp. During the daytime, students and people shopping at the Albert Cuypmarkt populate this light interior with windows on two sides and shades of red. In the evenings it is often packed to the rafters with a mix of artists out for a drink and media types. There is also a small kitchen for lunch, snacks and a tasty dish of the day. Heineken Experience
Barça has put the Spanish ‘champagne’ Cava back on the menu. Bottles of this sparkling drink sell like hot cakes here. With it you eat montaditos (canapés), small Spanish tapas or serious Spanish dishes in the restaurant section. Modern architecture The Scheepstimmermanstraat is a strange little canal in architectural terms. For the residents of the canalside houses were allowed to design their houses themselves, which has resulted in a varied and cheerful picture. NDSM shipyard The site of the Nederlandse Dok en Scheepvaart Maatschappij (‘Dutch Dock and Shipping Company’, or NDSM) is bubbling with creatvity. Until 1984 there was a shipyard here; now it is a breeding ground for talent and a meeting place for cultural entrepreneurs. Exhibitions, public rehearsals, shows, festivals and parties are held here fairly regularly. Even the Kraanspoor (‘Crane Track’) located nearby serves as clear evidence of this transformation. In a place where seafaring vessels were once built, architect Trude Hooykaas has created a 270-metre-long horizontal block of flats out of transparent materials where creative companies have now established themselves. The curious design has scooped various architectural awards.

M-Lab
Diagonally across from Central Station, on the other side of the water, lies café/ restaurant Wilhelmina-Dok. For a long time ships were repaired on this site, but the harbour has now been filled in and you can enjoy a good terrace and a great view of the city. As well as classics there are also unique dishes on the ever-changing menu.
In a former storage hangar is M-Lab, the ‘off-Broadway theatre on the IJ’. In this laboratory for musical theatre, new talent and new shows, interesting and experimental productions are staged, from family musicals to pop concerts and one-man shows – usually shows that the commercial producers do not get involved in.
