Known as takoyaki, these balls of grilled batter with octopus are smeared with brown sauce, then topped with katsuobushi (dried fish flakes) and green seaweed. The pickled ginger accompaniment is also good. However, it should be noted that the original variety of takoyaki, known as radioyaki, is made with flour mixed with soy-flavored broth and has no toppings.

Kitsune udon is a dish of thick wheat flour noodles (udon) in a bowl of broth. It originated in Osaka. Kasu udon is a Kawachi specialty that is growing in popularity, and there are many other types of udon dishes to try.

Osaka has a full range of theaters offering traditional arts, including Yamamoto Noh Theater (registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan) and the National Bunraku Theatre staging performances such as Bunraku (registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage).

Osaka is also known for iconic Japanese crafts. The Sakai Hamono cutlery is popular as commercial cutlery used by professional chefs. It has a market share of over 90%. A high degree of craftsmanship can also be seen in the wooden ranma panels and ranma panel carvings used in traditional buildings. They became well established in Osaka, aiming for widespread popularity. Asahi Breweries is a brewer with over 120 years of history in Japan. The company offers tours of its manufacturing process at its Suita Brewery, including tastings of freshly-brewed beer.

A tumulus is a mound of earth and stones raised over one or more graves. The Nintoku-ryo Tumulus is one of the largest of Japan’s keyhole-shaped tumuli. Along with similar sites surrounding it, it makes up part of the Mozu Kofungun group of tumuli. The discovery of important historical artifacts here recently has brought it to national attention.

The Siege of Osaka was a series of historical battles between the Tokugawa shogunate and the Toyotomi clan. 2014 marks the 400th anniversary of the siege’s winter campaign, and 2015 marks the 400th anniversary of its summer campaign. The top of Osaka Castle’s main tower (or tenshukaku) is 55 meters above ground level and has an observation deck that provides a panoramic view of the city. The castle has a full range of exhibits on Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his era.

Beginning in the Edo Period, this area was lined with merchant houses and was considered the city's "merchant village." Osaka Zoo opened in 1915, making it Japan’s thirdoldest zoo. The zoo houses over 900 animals from about 200 species on its approximately 11-hectares grounds, including Asian elephants, lions and chimpanzees. The kiwi exhibit is the only place in Japan to see New Zealand’s national symbol, and the polar bears are always popular. One of the attractive features is the landscape emersion exhibit that recreate the look of the animals’ natural habitats as faithfully as possible.

The tower was built in 1912 to symbolize Shinsekai ("New World"), drawing inspirations from the Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower. The tower was once dismantled due to a fire but was reconstructed in 1956 to the current shape. During the night, the entire tower is lit in 6 colors using LED lights. The combination of colors at the top of the tower informs the weather as well as illuminating the night sky of Osaka.

There is no argument that the main tower is the symbol of Osaka. Construction of this castle started in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the main tower was completed 2 years later. After being twice damaged by a fire during the summer campaign of the Siege of Osaka and subsequently by a lightning strike, the central tower was restored in 1931. The castle contains a museum displaying historical documents and the observation deck on the 8th floor allows a panoramic view of Osaka. Osaka Castle attracts over 1.5 million visitors per year.

Okonomiyaki: Tsuruhashi Fugetsu, Dotombori Ebisubashi branch

The okonomiyaki served at Tsuruhashi Fugetsu is all about the cabbage. The cabbage creates a loose texture inside the dish, while the outside is a crunchy, aromatic golden brown. The chain makes its own sauce that has kept diners coming back since its founding. The sauce goes extremely well with the mayonnaise, which is a variety with low tartness.

Apart from the main temple, there is a Kitoden (prayer hall) designated for traffic safety where 100 vehicles with passengers in them can be prayed for at one time. Each year, the temple is visited by 200,000 vehicles and 2 million worshippers. During the Setsubun Festival in February, many celebrities visit to participate in the bean-throwing ceremony.

Kyuhoji Jinaicho is one of the most precious historical townscapes of Osaka Prefecture. This temple town traces its origins back to the 15th century, when Rennyo was spreading Shinran’s teachings and laying the foundations for the revival of Hongan-ji Temple. The area started flourishing as a temple town after Rennyo built Saisho-ji Temple, which later became Kensho-ji Temple. You can get a real sense of history as you walk around observing the white walls, mushiko windows and grid-pattern alley. ☎ 072-924-6371 http://www.city.yao.osaka.jp/site_policy/0000000010.html

Affectionately called “Ishikiri-san,” Ishikiri-Tsurugiya Shrine, located at the foot of Mt. Ikoma, has long been familiar as a deity who cures dembo (tumors and boils). The name of the shrine is derived from the enshrined objects of worship: a sword and arrow (tsurugi and ya) that are able to cut and penetrate any rock. The retrospective atmosphere of the sando (approach to the shrine) full of fortune-telling booths, eateries, kanpo shops and food stores is also popular among visitors. 1 Higashiishikiricho, Higashiosaka City 2 Kintetsu Line: Ishikiri or Shin-Ishikiri Sta. 5 Admission: free ☎ 072-982-3621 http://www.ishikiri.or.jp/

Shotoku Taishi reputedly collected wood in Kizu River to construct Shitennoji Temple, Okawa River was widened and opened by Emperor Nintoku, Higashi-yokobori River was dug as a moat for Osaka castle, and Dotombori River was enlarged and opened by merchants in the beginning of the Edo period. The resulting rectangular waterways comprised of those rivers are very unusual, and rarely seen anywhere else in the world. Dotombori River

Electricity The standard voltage in Japan is AC 100V, which is somewhat unusual globally, and there are two different frequencies. 60 Hz is used in west Japan centered on Osaka, and 50 Hz is used for east Japan centered on Tokyo. Plugs are the same two-pin type as used in North America. An adapter is required for three-pin plugs.

Postal mail service The sign for post offices is 〒 in red on a white background which is easy to identify. Post office hours are 09:00~17:00 on weekdays. Osaka Central Post Office adjacent to JR Osaka station's Sakurabashi gate is open from 09:00 to 21:00. Many red postboxes are installed on the street. Please use travelers checks, credit cards, or cash as appropriate to the purpose.Travelers checks can be used in hotels, ryokans (traditional Japanese style hotels), and major stores, and can be exchanged at major commercial banks in principal cities. Compared to foreign currency exchange, they can be exchanged with a lower handling charge, and can be reissued if lost or stolen. International credit cards, such as American Express, VISA, and MasterCard can also be used in many places, which is convenient. However, travelers check and credit cards may not be accepted in some stores and restaurants, etc. in rural areas, so it is recommended to carry some cash.

Information on ATMs that can be used for withdrawing cash using a credit card or cash card issued in foreign countries Many ATMs do not accept credit cards or cash cards issued in other countries. You are recommended to contact your credit card company to check which ATMs can be used for any credit or cash cards issued overseas in advance. Seven Bank and Japan Post Bank ATMs now accept foreign credit cards for cash withdrawals. The accepted card types are indicated near the ATM. * Some Maestro cards with EMV chips are currently accepted by only a few ATMs. See your card issuer’s website for more information.
