The Symbol of Palanga – Sea Pier It is impossible to imagine Palanga without the Sea Pier, a place attracting everyone. Beautiful scenery of dunes, yellow beaches and limitless sea open before the eyes of onlooker, the sounds of the sea and shrieks of seagulls fill in the air. Evenings may be comfortably spent on the benches with loved ones watching amazing sunsets. At the end of the 19th century Palanga was ruled by Counts Tiðkevièiai. They decided to build a dock for ships that could be used to transport bricks made in counts' brickyard. The dock was built in 1884-1888 and vessel “Phoenix” cruised to Klaipeda and Liepaja. Later, when the export of bricks failed, the ship was used for transportation of passengers. Unfortunately, after storms the dock would be covered in sand, therefore, it was realized that the bridge was not suitable for navigation. Since 1892, the pier became the most popular place for taking walks. Impacts of time, sea waves and wind destroyed this structure, thus, a new pier of 470 meters in length was built on concrete poles in 1998. The sculpture “Jûratë and Kastytis” (sculptress N. Gaigalaitë) that became another symbol of the resort was built in the nearby square in 1961.

Sculpture Park Fascinates with the Works of Acknowledged Artists The sculpture park is located in the city centre at the crossing of Vytauto and J. Simpsono Streets. This park attracts not only the attention of passers-by, it is also a place of attraction for those preferring quiet relaxation with family, children or friends. Park visitors may enjoy as many as 28 sculptures given to Palanga City Municipality by Lithuanian Art Museum. Currently, the sculpture park exhibits works of acknowledged Lithuanian sculptors Kazimieras Kisielius, Bronius Vyðniauskas, Leonas Strioga, Bronius Zalensas, Albertas Donatas Belevièius, Vaclovas Krutinis, Aloyzas Toleikis, Antanas Þukauskas, Daliutë Ona Matulaitë. There are also sculptures of the famous Lithuanian artist Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas created in emigration. The exposition includes valuable works by sculptors from Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine and Armenia.

Birute Park – the Pearl of Palanga – More Beautiful Each Year

Comfortable relaxation in Palanga cannot be imagined not only without the sea but also without a walk in one of the most beautiful parks in Eastern Europe – Birute Park. This resort area called the pearl of Palanga is adorned every year in order to make it even more attractive to holidaymakers. The novelty of this year, an overnight lighting of the park, allows resort visitors watching the sunset to continue their memorable romantic evening in the cosy shelter of nature. Birute Park was established in the territory of the former sacred Birute Forest and Birute Hill. At the end of 19th century, famous French architect Édouard Francois André prepared a project for a landscape park at the order of Tiðkevièiai.

Birute Hill Whispers Legends of the Past When walking in Birute Park, one of the most beautiful places in Palanga, be certain to visit Birute Hill. Here, centuries-old sacred Birute pine forest still thrives in the territory of former Tiðkevièiai Mansion. It surrounds the legendary Birute Hill standing 21 meters above the sea level and overlooking magnificent view of soughing sea. You will not only have a good time in the nature but also be able to travel to ancient times – the fact that people lived here a long time ago is proven by discoveries of ceramics on the hill dating back to the first millennium. Settlement complex of Curonians usually consisted of a castle, one or more settlements and an oblation table.

Project “The Reflections of Birute Park History” implemented for the last ten years in the park silently brings the visitors back to the past of the resort during the times of Counts Tiðkevièiai. On summer Thursdays one can meet characters representing Counts Tiðkevièiai and their guests who lived in Palanga of the last century. Authentic clothing is made according to the surviving photographs of the family of Counts Tiðkevièiai. Recreated jewellery and details such as antique bicycle or baby stroller provides the visitors of Birute Park with the sense of reality rather than a theatrical impression. Traditionally, three times a week on every summer Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. brass music fans gather in park rotunda where professional orchestra of Palanga gives free concerts for the residents and guests of Palanga in the surroundings of nature.

Brilliantly designed park has a large variety of images and sentiments with artfully arranged pathways and flowerbeds in yards. This swampy area of Tiðkevièiai estate was overgrown with hassocks. At the request of the counts, ponds were excavated in this place and the soil was used for the construction of the mansion. The famous Amber Museum is now located in the neorenaissance style mansion built on this estate in 1897.

The series of chamber music concerts “Night Serenades” (lt. “Nakties serenados”) is just another traditional event that has been celebrating Palanga, Birute Park and Amber Museum for more than a decade.

Birute Park is a great place for quiet and comfortable family relaxation, therefore, parents and their children, young people as well as senior Palanga residents or visitors enjoy spending their time here.

The park bursts into colourful blossoms in September when Days of Birute Park are organized for the seventh year in a row. This event is for the enthusiasts preferring quiet and comfortable outdoors relaxation.

A castle and oblation table on the Birute Hill date back to 9th – 13th centuries, a village was established at the foot of the hill. At the end of 14th century – the beginning of 15th century a defensive wall was built on the hill which was probably burnt during fights with Crusaders. Later, a pagan sanctuary with paleoastronomy observatory was set up here. This sanctuary is linked with the name of the priestess Birutë, the wife of Duke Kæstutis and the mother of Vytautas. Stories tell that she lived here and kept the holy fire burning and was buried here after her death. In 1898, a neo-gothic chapel designed by architect K. Mayer was built on the top of Birute Hill. In 1976, the chapel was decorated with stained-glass created by the artist L. Pocius.

Palanga Church Attracts not Only the Congregation

Evangelical Lutheran Parish of Palanga Evangelic Lutheran Parish of Palanga was founded at the beginning of 19th century. It used to be a part of Kretinga parish. Since 1910, the congregation would gather for worship in the home of pharmacist Oskar Berting. Later, a spacious room on the second floor of the house was prepared and the congregation has been praying there for 18 years. The community consisted of Lithuanians, Latvians and Germans, therefore, priests preached in three languages.

The Most Holy Virgin Mary's Ascension Church in Palanga was built more than hundred years ago and attracts almost every gaze of the passers-by with its neo-gothic beauty and greatness. There are also something to be admired inside: an impressive pulpit and three skilfully made marble altars decorated with bas-reliefs brought from France. The central altar bears the image of Mary Mother of God mentioned as early as in the 17th century. The other two wooden altars situated in the side naves were brought from the former wooden church. The first small wooden Catholic Church in Palanga was built in 1540 at the initiative of Ona Jogailaitë. Another cross-shaped church with a tower and a bell tower was built in 1590 at the initiative of Lithuanian authorities.

The first parish house was equipped and consecrated in 1928 in Jûratës Street. In 1938, it burned down. The Soviet government forbade the parish to operate.

In 1767, the wooden church was rebuilt again and survived for 140 years. In 1897, a construction of a new neo-gothic church designed by a Swedish architect Karl Eduard Strandmann was started next to the old wooden church. The construction works were funded by count Feliksas Tiðkevièius. In 1907, when the construction of the brick church was completed, the old wooden church was destroyed. The parish was restored in 1993. In 2000, city municipality allocated a land plot in Saulëtekio Street for the construction of a new church and in 2005 the bishop M. Sabutis consecrated the cornerstone of the church. Project was prepared by Irena and Gintas Likðai.

The Novelty of the Holiday Season – Dancing Musical Fountain In the summer, the new fountain entertains visitors with the dance of music, light and water. One can select a favourite melody from a special playlist for a fountain to dance to by SMS message. The price for a song to be performed by a dancing fountain is 3 euro. Visitors may also enjoy free daily hour-long shows. The height and direction of water spouts as well as fountain lightening change depending on a selected piece of music. Water spouts are controlled by special computer equipment according to a piece of music selected. The computer equipment of the fountain automatically controls the height and current angle of the water spouts depending on the direction and strength of wind. 260 water nozzles and 48 different colour lights producing full range of colours creates impressive light music effect. Fountain equipment was purchased in Greece and Italy. Five powerful German pumps ejecting the main spout to the height of eight meters and lifting almost 4.3 tonnes of water into the air per minute are installed under the fountain pool. Palanga fountain is the largest dancing fountain in Lithuania if measured according to the amount of lifted water.

The Orthodox parish was founded in Palanga in 1995. First it was located in one of the rooms in the Russian school. In 1999, Palanga city municipality allocated a land plot of 2263 m2 for the construction of the church. The church complex was designed by an architect Dmitry Borunov of Penza. The minor consecration was performed by the pastor archimandrite Anthony of the Church of All Russian Saints (Klaipëda). On 16 June 2002, the major consecration of the new church of Iversk Icon of the Mother of God with the participation of Vilnius and Lithuanian metropolitan Chrysostom was performed by a permanent member of the Russian Orthodox Church Synod metropolitan Juvenaly of Krutitsy and Kolomna.

Tiðkevièius Mansion – Crowning Jewel of Palanga

Amber Museum belonging to Lithuanian Art Museum was founded on 3 August 1963 in a former estate of Count Feliksas Tiðkevièius. The museum situated in the magnificent palace in the centre of Birute Park is one of the most visited museums in the country. Museum containing one of the most abundant collections of amber inclusions and pieces in the world has about five thousand exhibits in total. You can get acquainted with the amber formation, trade routes, extraction and processing in Amber Museum that was restored this year. Areas located on the ground floor of the palace charm visitors with updated historical interiors portraying the life of the counts in this palace. Visitors interested in Palanga and the history of Tiðkevièiai family may visit and admire authentic spaces: Hall, Events Hall, Red Salon, Grand Salon, Countess Parlour, Blue Salon, Parlour of the Young Count, Small Salon. Surroundings of the residence of aristocrats is recreated in these representative halls of the palace where art pieces from the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century from the interiors of manors of the nobility from the collections of Counts Tiðkevièiai, other Lithuanian noblemen as well as private collections preserved by Lithuanian Art Museum are displayed. Romualdas Budrys is the author of interior expositions. Unique amber display enriched with archaeological exhibits and renewed inclusion collection is presented on the first floor. Lithuanian artist, modernist sculptor A. Monèys was born in Monèiai village, Kretinga district. Because of WWII, he moved to the West, lived and worked in France. Over 200 sculptures, drawings, graphic works, collages, whistles and masks that were given to Lithuania after the artists' death are exhibited on the second floor of the museum. The first floor of the museum is also an exhibition hall with a constantly changing display.

History lovers will certainly be interested in the memorial homestead of Dr Jonas Ðliupas. Jonas Ðliupas, a doctor and a famous public figure of the 20th century Lithuania, came to live in Palanga in 1930. Thanks to J. Ðliupas, city rights were granted to Palanga and he was elected the first burgomaster of Palanga. J. Ðliupas memorial exhibition was opened in his homestead in July 1989. The history of Palanga, its surroundings, and ethnographic fragments, as well as the era of “Auðra” and “Varpas” are exhibited in the museum.

Amber Processing Workshop Open to Visitors Members of Palanga Guild of Amber Masters demonstrate amber processing technology used for processing a simple piece of amber to a fully crafted jewel in their amber processing workshops. Visitors of amber processing workshop are able to not only observe the work of masters but also test their own skills on the lathe.

The Memorial Homestead of Dr Jonas Ðliupas, the First Burgomaster of the Resort

MONUMENT TO COMMEMORATE JEWS KILLED DURING THE WAR The monument is in the south-western side of the new park. The monument is a huge granite stone where the inscription “Here in the dunes of the southern part of this forest Nazi executioners and their local helpers brutally murdered 105 Jews in 1941. May this be a holy memorial to the innocent victims” is engraved in Hebrew and Lithuanian languages. The monument was built in a symbolic place of mass murders around 1989.

Could there be a greater joy for the little ones than seeing lots of man's best friends – dogs – in one place? Country's well-known artists Vytautas and Vida Kusai started collecting dog souvenirs in the spring of 1991, and after 18 years, this collection turned into the first Dog Museum exhibition in the Baltic States. Today, there are about 2,000 exhibits of dogs from 37 countries made from 22 different materials and stored on the shelves of the Museum. This Museum holds a special place in the hearts of children. Most of the souvenirs are dog figurines. The unique collection of different engraved bird eggs and original oil paintings by V. Children's Park Multi-Purpose Sports Complex The multi-purpose sports complex adapted to different kinds of sports was opened over a year ago and is probably one of the largest investments in sports infrastructure by the country and the European Union. Official Lithuanian National Basketball League matches and international sports competitions take place here. The sports complex is designed not only for professional athletes; everyone can play basketball or table tennis here. Two modern fitness rooms sometimes packed with sports enthusiasts are very popular at the complex. The oasis of joy for the little ones is located in the quiet place surrounded by pine trees next to the bicycle path and right next to the sea. This Children's Park is very popular. At the crossing of Naglio Avenue and Ðermukðniø St., the little ones can enjoy attractions designed just for them free of charge: sea-themed colourful gaming equipment that are up to seven metres in high, variety of climbers, swings and carousels suitable for children of all ages. The territory is fenced and the park is illuminated and has security cameras installed so that children could play safely. All the equipment is made of plywood and plastic, the playground is filled with beach sand. Time spent in Children's Park will fly by not only for the kids but also for the adults; they can take a break and enjoy fresh sea air, use free Wi-Fi in the area of the park while the kids play. Various events for children are organised in the park during the summer. A café for children where you can grab a snack, soda, or try different ice-cream flavours is located nearby in case you get hungry. Near the park, you can find a playful container toilet which is decorated with children's drawings. Fitness lane “Labrytys” situated alongside coastal pine forest and near the Children's Park invites people who enjoy active exercising. Here you can use a six-kilometre-long path stretching through the forest, and, during a break, you can exercise in five recreation areas equipped with outdoor fitness and sports equipment located near the “Labrytys” lane. In good weather, a pleasure boat accommodating 25 people sets sail from Sea Pier every half hour from 10 a.m. until evening. The boat takes passengers into the sea at the distance of about 4-5 kilometres; entertainment tour lasts for half an hour.

If you want to relax and rest while driving, then an environmentally friendly vehicle – electric vehicle – is exactly what you need. A small, electric battery-driven open train can accommodate up to 13 adults. Electric vehicles are allowed to be driven on the streets as well as on bicycle paths. Palanga Concert Hall In the end of 2015 a new Concert Hall equipped using the most modern technologies was opened in Palanga. The new Concert Hall is almost 5 thousand sq. m, it rises about 14 meters above the ground and is lowered 6 m underground. The building is of round form, it is suitable not only for the summer season but can function all year round. The lighting system allows to create various variants of facade lighting, while the hall itself stands out for its exclusive lighting – the light penetrates inside through the skilight and through the windows „cut out“ in the facade wall. The Concert hall has a 2200 seats amphitheatre with the chairs placed around the stage. In order to ensure the perfect acoustics here the quality requirements were especially high. Therefore only special acoustic materials preventing echo with excellent sound proofing qualities were used for the hall.

Special acoustics Palanga Concert Hall employs the most modern acoustic technologies – the stage is equipped with 8 microphones, in the round hall there are 112 speakers, so that spectators sitting at every place would enjoy high quality sound. Highly professional and powerful digital electroacoustic system is adjustable for any genre of music this system processes the acoustics in the hall in accordance with the needs of the specific genre of the show on the stage. Palanga Concert Hall is equally suitable for variety, chamber or brass band concerts, musicals, TV projects, events of other genres. Hopefully, the new concert hall will attract music lovers from Lithuania and neighbouring countries also during the cold season, because now the resort can offer concert audio equipment for the most demanding artists and audience.

The Symbol of the Resort – Kurhaus Classical and chamber music concerts sound just perfect in Palanga Kurhaus – both performers and listeners unanimously agree that the acoustics are especially good in this building reminiscing the times of the Counts Tiðkevièiai. The beginning of the history of Kurhaus, the symbol of the resort, is associated with the dynasty of Counts Tiðkevièiai. In 1877, on the corner of current Vytauto and J. Basanavièiaus streets, Count J. Tiðkevièius built a spacious restaurant that was soon expanded and the first seaside resort hotel was founded here. Kurhaus became a popular and favourite gathering place for tourists. It was not only a restaurant but also a reading room, visitors could play billiard and other games. Dances, performances and concerts were also held here. Thus, the Kurhaus became the heart of a developing seaside resort. The symbol of Palanga burnt down on 25 August 2002; its restoration was started on 30 May 2012. Over the years a masonry part of the Kurhaus has been restored; an authentic moulding of Kurhaus have been restored according to the surviving material; an oak parquet has been installed and walls have been decorated with wallpapers – the same that decorated Kurhaus in times of Counts Tiðkevièiai. A chandelier dating to the end of the 18th century adorns the great Kurhaus hall. Currently, Kurhaus is also open for the public – various events and concerts are held in the gorgeous 200-seat hall. Kurhaus has been given a new address – the 1st number of the Counts Tiðkevièiai Avenue has been ceremoniously granted to the symbol of the seaside resort. FEBRUARY. “PALANGA SMELT” (lt. “Palangos stinta”). Traditional winter festival celebrating fish smelling of fresh cucumbers a smelt.

MARCH AND APRIL. EASTER. THE OPENING OF EASTER-EGG ALLEY. (lt. “Marguèiø alëjos atidarymas”). City guests and Palanga residents are able to experience the beauty of Easter-eggs decorated with ornaments of the Baltic Sea countries. Giant Easter-eggs (up to 2 metres tall) adorn J. Basanavièiaus Street in Palanga city.

APRIL. FESTIVAL OF ST. GEORGE'S DAY CUSTOMS “GEORGE, TAKE THE KEYS” (lt. “Jurgi - paimk raktus!”). Folklore ensembles from different countries present St. George's Day customs of their regions.

RESORT FESTIVAL (lt. “Kurorto ðventë”). This festival marks the beginning of resort season and is organised since 1972. During this festival, Folk Artists' Fair is held; Palanga orchestra marching along the streets of the city awakens guests and city residents.

JUNE TO SEPTEMBER. SERIES OF MUSIC CONCERTS FOR WIND INSTRUMENTS “BRASS SUMMER” (lt. “Dûdø vasara”). Every summer Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6.30 pm resort guests and all wind music lovers are welcomed to listen to classical, popular and original wind music in Birute Park.

JULY. “1000 KM RACE” (lt. “1000 km Lenktynës”). The greatest and most prestigious automobile sports event “1000 km Race” in Palanga entered into its second decade of existence. Motorcycles and racing cars start the chase right before the noon in the centre of Palanga. FISHERMEN'S HOLIDAY. (lt. “Þvejø ðventë”) During this holiday fish soup is prepared, fishermen are celebrated, concerts are held, folk gatherings around the campfire take place, and fireworks light Ðventoji Port.

JULY AND AUGUST. SERIES OF CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERTS “NIGHT SERENADES” (lt. “Nakties serenados”). Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society organises this unique series of chamber orchestra concerts in Palanga Amber Museum since 1971; every year on summer evenings music lovers are welcomed to enjoy music under open sky.

BIRUTE PARK DAY. The mission of the events is to introduce the centenarian traditions of the park. Ðventoji Lighthouse

VISIT ÐVENTOJI

Ðventoji lighthouse made from red square metal constructions was built in 1957, 780 meters from the sea. Its height is 39 meters. Lighthouse is a navigating sign with a visibility of the signal of 31 km. Ðventoji Lighthouse has never gone out for more than one hour during the whole period of operation. It has an audible signal installed in 1964. The Lighthouse has undergone a major reconstruction; new and modern equipment was installed in it.

Samogitian Sanctuary (lt. “Þemaièiø Alka”) – Reconstructed Paleoastronomic Observatory Visit Samogitian Sanctuary located on the dune near the health centre “Energetikas”at the end of Jonpaparèio Street during your stay in Ðventoji. This is the pagan sanctuary with paleoastronomic observatory that stood on Birute Hill in Palanga in the 15th century and was restored in 1988. During the restoration of the pagan sanctuary, the wooden columns carved by folk artists were put up in the Samogitian Sanctuary and each of the columns symbolizes the names of mythological gods and goddesses of the Balts: Perkûnas, Auðrinë, Þemyna, Austëja, Ondenis, Patrimpas, Patulas, Velnias, Leda, Saulë and Mënulis. When the sun goes down to the sea, these columns help to determine pagan calendar holidays. Now pagan feasts are celebrated here.

Sculpture Park “The Stone Age” (lt. “Akmens amþius”)

Visit Ðventoji! Ðventoji is a resort town on the Baltic coast located 12 km to the north from the centre of Palanga. The settlement is situated on the left bank of the Ðventoji River; it flows into the Baltic Sea. This is an old fishing village where archaeological findings dating back to 3000 BC were discovered. Over time, fishing village has grown into a port which is known since the 13th century. Ðventoji Port was intensely operating in the 16th – 17th centuries creating a tough competition to Klaipëda, Liepaja, Ventspils, and Riga ports, especially when English traders were granted a privilege to build the port in Ðventoji where large merchant ships could moor. In the 17th century, Ðventoji was granted trade rights and was able to develop a maritime business; it significantly improved port's economy. Trade with England and Denmark was carried out through Ðventoji. Ðventoji Port was widely known till 1701 when Swedish fleet destroyed Ðventoji Port by blocking it up with stones and sand. When Lithuania regained its independence, Ðventoji belonged to Latvia as a part of Courland governorate. It was given to Lithuania in 1921 by the decision of the international arbitration commission headed by Lord G. Simpson since the majority of the population there consisted of Lithuanians. In 1925, reconstruction works of the port and establishment of the fishing town began in Ðventoji. However, Ðventoji Port was constantly covered in sand therefore, works hardly progressed preventing Ðventoji from becomimg a large port. Ðventoji became known as a resort town in the Baltic region and Europe during the interwar period. Ðventoji became famous and grew mostly after the Second Wold War. In 1970, Ðventoji was connected to Palanga and became the part of Palanga resort. Currently, a restoration project of the port is prepared. The port reconstruction works would positively affect the development of the resort. Ðventoji is an expanding resort. The construction of new modern private houses and hotels are underway, cafes are being opened. About 2,000 permanent residents live in Ðventoji.

Sculpture Park “The Stone Age” is located in the harmonious and open territory of the Health Centre “Energetikas”. Annual international stone sculpture symposium is organised since 2005 in a unique space created at the efforts of Health Centre doctors and artists having deep healing traditions. The symposium attracts generations of professional sculptors from Lithuania, Austria, France and other EU countries as well as from the US, Russia and Belarus. Currently, Sculpture Park “The Stone Age” has 50 stone sculptures to be enjoyed by everyone.

The Monkey Bridge (lt. “Beþdþioniø tiltas”) A swinging bridge suspended over Ðventoji River is often called the symbol of Ðventoji. The bridge was built in 1973.

Sculpture “Fisherman's Daughters” (lt. “Þvejo dukros”) In 1982, an impressive 4 meters tall sculptural composition “Fisherman's Daughters” was built in the dunes at the gates of Ðventoji Port. Zuzana Pranaitytë is the author of the sculpture. The sculpture portrays three long-haired girls looking at the sea waiting for their father to come back from the fishery.
