Will our overseas marriage be legal in the UK? Virgin Holidays’ overseas weddings are registered in the country where they take place, but are also legally recognised in the UK. If you don’t live permanently in the UK, please check with your own embassy and the embassy of the country you’re getting married in as requirements can be different depending on nationalities. Our wedding packages can only be booked as part of a complete Virgin Holidays package. For legal requirements for all the featured wedding destinations, please read pages 112–113 in this brochure.

This can be obtained from a notary public (who is usually found through a solicitor’s office). The document should explain that you are free to marry while there and confirm your marital status. Costs can vary considerably from solicitor to solicitor. The solicitor's office will need to sign and stamp the affidavit.

An Apostille is an official confirmation that a signature, seal or stamp appearing on a document is genuine. It can be obtained at the legislation service of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

Who will conduct our ceremony? The majority of our weddings are conducted by a marriage officer, although their title may vary depending on the resort – e.g. Celebrant, Minister or Registrar. Where it is possible to be married by a Minister the ceremony will be non-denominational unless otherwise stated.

This document is required for weddings in Bali and Ulusaba, and it states that there is no known impediment to your proposed marriage. These certificates vary in their validity (sometimes just for a few months), so it is extremely important that you check the requirements which apply to your circumstances. Please also note that a Certificate of No Impediment may be insufficient on its own to allow a marriage to take place in a foreign country. The certificate is prepared by the Superintendent Registrar at the Register Office in the area in which you live. The cost of the certificate is approximately £45 per person and is valid for three months. You will need to take identification documents with you to your appointment; this will be explained to you by the receptionist. Subject to there being no complications, the Certificate of No Impediment will be issued to you between 17-23 days after your appointment.

The majority of resorts require a three-workingday residency period before the ceremony can take place. Most wedding ceremonies take place Mon-Fri (excluding public holidays). Once the date of your wedding ceremony has been confirmed by the resort, we will then confirm this to you in writing. In very exceptional circumstances, the date of your wedding may have to be rescheduled. This point is worth remembering if you intend to print wedding invitations or have jewellery engraved. We cannot be held liable for any associated costs of such items should the wedding date change.

Where will the wedding be registered?

When a marriage takes place abroad under foreign local law it cannot be registered in the UK. However, a record of the marriage can be lodged with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office via the General Register Office (telephone 0300 123 1837) by depositing an original marriage certificate. This only applies to certain countries, and where it is possible a fee will be required. This means that in future a marriage certificate could be issued by the General Register Office here, should the need arise.

What is a Decree Absolute?

Proof is required if the parties have been divorced (or their marriage has been annulled). Documents to prove the dissolution or annulment must be provided. Once a divorce or annulment has been made final, the court will send you a Decree Absolute, which will bear a red or embossed court seal. This decree must bear the court stamp, as without it your wedding may not take place. In some countries couples who have divorced cannot re-marry until a full 12 months have passed since divorcing.

How do we book optional extras?

When you have booked your holiday we will send you details of your local wedding co-ordinator in your chosen resort, who will be happy to liaise with you regarding any additional wedding ceremony options available for your location. These can be requested before you travel directly with the hotel or venue. Payment for any extras that are not included in the cost of your wedding should be made locally, or prepaid before you travel (prices are subject to change locally without notice).

Where will our wedding ceremony take place? After consulting with the wedding co-ordinator, you can choose the location of your ceremony – usually in the hotel grounds or a gazebo. A beach ceremony is not always possible, but you can, if you like, head down to the sea afterwards for a celebratory glass or two of Champagne.

What’s included in a Virgin Holidays Wedding? At most resorts and venues we offer a choice of several wedding packages, as described in this brochure. The package is for the bride and groom, unless otherwise stated. After choosing the package

Why do I need to have my birth certificate re-issued? For weddings taking place in Mauritius, the Mauritian government now requires all couples to have their birth certificates re-issued and dated within three months of their wedding date. Do this and you won’t have to visit the Attorney at Law and Supreme High Court in Mauritius. You’ll still need to visit the Civil Status Main Office in Port Louis and the Civil Status Sub Office. New UK birth certificates can be ordered online from the General Register Office (gro.gov.uk) and cost £9.25 per certificate plus delivery. If you hold a non-UK birth certificate, check with your own embassy for advice on how to obtain a new certificate. Where it is not possible to obtain a duplicate birth certificate, arrangements must be made to complete an Affidavit, while in Mauritius, at an additional cost. This signed Affidavit must be paid for in advance and can take up to a day to arrange in-resort.

Is it possible to organise a private reception with our guests after the ceremony? To celebrate the end of your special day, your resort wedding co-ordinator can organise a reception meal for you and your guests so you can keep the celebration going. Please bear in mind receptions are not included in your holiday and will come at an extra cost, which is paid directly to the resort. You may wish to check this in advance if booking for a large wedding party, so you’re aware of these additional costs prior to booking your wedding package with us.

Our Essential Information MUST be read in conjunction with the terms and conditions and useful information, as stated in the brochure/website from which your holiday is booked. These conditions govern your relationship with Virgin Holidays and set out details of Virgin Holidays’ obligations in relation to any Virgin holiday you book or that is booked on your behalf. Please be aware that these terms include limitations on the liability of Virgin Holidays and its obligations relating to any holiday and certain exclusions of Virgin Holidays’ responsibility. Here is a brief summary of our liability clause; the full clause appears in our full set of booking conditions. Subject to our full booking conditions, we promise that your holiday arrangements will be made, performed or provided with reasonable skill and care. Mauritius A re-issued birth certificate needs to be applied for via the governments records office within 90 days of the wedding. Also an ‘Application to Marry’ form will be sent to the couple by the Weddings Team and must be completed and signed by both bride and groom. All original documents and re-issued birth certificates must be taken to Mauritius for formalities in Port Louis.

Once you have married in Sri Lanka you must get your marriage certificate certified by the Consular Affairs Section of the Ministry of External Affairs in Colombo for the marriage certificate be legally recognised outside of Sri Lanka. You will be sent the certificate after this process is complete, and please note this may take up to four months. Some paper work must be legalised by the foreign and commonwealth office and then attested by the Sri Lanka High commission in London within three months of the wedding date. St Lucia An approximate US $300 express fee is applicable for weddings taking place in less than three days after arrival. Thailand

If either or both of the wedding party has been divorced or widowed, or changed their name by deed poll, the decree absolute(s) or death certificate(s) must be legalised by the Foreign Office prior to departure. These documents must also be translated and legalised by the Cuban Embassy. Please contact relevant Embassy for rates prior to booking as these rates can be expensive. Dominican Republic You will also need to supply one photocopy of passport, picture/information page (Bride and Groom). In addition, passport photocopies of the witnesses (which can’t be family members – if you do not have witnesses, the hotel will provide them). There is a mandatory 10 months waiting period after a divorce. The documents must be legalized by the Dominican Consulate no longer than three months prior to the wedding date. Please contact relevant embassy for costs prior to booking as these can be expensive. Couples must supply copies of their documents with their initial documentation and take all translated and legalised originals with them when they travel.

Mexico Blood test, marriage validation and judges fees are required to be taken and paid for locally by the couple and can amount to approx $1,000, if the couple have been married previously or would like their parents names on their wedding certificate all the documents must be endorsed by the foreign and commonwealth office prior to departure and translated into Spanish, either in the UK or at the resort (payable locally). Please contact relevant embassy for rates prior to booking as these rates can be expensive. All translated and apostilled documents with the exception of passports become the property of the State of Quintana Roo, Mexico.

If the woman has divorced less than 310 days prior to the wedding date a medical certificate must be produced on the day of the marriage to prove that she is not pregnant and able to remarry. The couple must visit the British Embassy in Bangkok and stay a minimum of three nights (Monday – Thursday) to receive their marriage registration and Thai marriage certificate (excluding day of arrival).

Sandals and Beaches Properties Failure to provide the correct documentation 60 days before travel will result in a charge of $150 being imposed by Sandals/Beaches for documentation administration. This must be paid before departure. If these documents are not received before travel, Sandals/Beaches reserves the right to cancel the wedding. Sandals properties are for adults only and children may not be allowed into the hotels for the ceremony. Couples need to also complete a Marriage Licence Processing form and a Check List Form which will be sent to the couple by the wedding team. For residency and documentation requirements please check above for the country your Sandals/Beaches hotel is based. At Sandals and Beaches Resorts a typed birth certificate is required and (not handwritten).

Please note: A change of name deed may be required for some resorts, even if the bride and groom has been previously married and reverted back to her maiden name. Sri Lanka All photocopies are required to be stamped by a solicitor and then written in ink. The solicitor must confirm that they are true and accurate copies of the original, and sign and date each copy. The solicitor’s stamp must state that they are, in fact, a solicitor. All documents must be translated into English and must be in resort six weeks prior to wedding.

Eight photographs are required showing the bride and groom together (6x4cm). The bride must be on the right as you look at the photograph and the groom on the left. These are taken in resort. A covering letter is also required stating confirmation of wedding date, religions of bride and groom and also full names and addresses of both sets of parents. We can only arrange weddings in Bali for British citizens. Couples must declare they are of the same religion. Atheism is not a recognised religion and Catholic weddings are not permitted. If couples do not have a religion or are of different religion they have the option of having a Christian ceremony, however they must prepare a typewritten affirmation or affidavit (but not signed) of marital status and send it to the British Embassy Jakarta, they also need to bring a hard copy to the appointment. The fee for the affirmation advised by the consulate is approx £50 per person (so it would be £100 in total), converted at Rp 20,000, which is Rp 1,000,000 per person or Rp 2,000,000 in total (subject to change). The bride and groom must have written parental consent if under 21 years of age to marry in Bali. Payable locally: £37 per couple for depositing wedding certificate.
