bu Dhabi Tourism & Culture announced the opening of the Qasr Al Hosn Exhibition to the public on 8th March. The exhibition offers visitors a journey through the story behind Abu Dhabi, as well as the history of the region surrounding Qasr Al Hosn, and highlights the restoration and conservation development project that includes Qasr Al Hosn and its surrounding area. The Qasr Al Hosn master plan was launched on Monday by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and it is expected to be completed by 2018. Moving through the various zones of this lasting cultural icon, Qasr Al Hosn Exhibition presents a rich collection of oral testimonies, historical photographs, and other materials that highlight the history of the region, and the vital role of Qasr Al Hosn within Abu Dhabi as a beacon of heritage, culture, and Emirati tradition. The exhibition also relates the extensive history of Abu Dhabi and the story of its development through to the modern era. The newly renovated cultural destination underpins the everlasting vision of late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, and his invaluable initiatives to integrate culture into the identity of the emirate of Abu Dhabi. His vision inspired the concept behind the new design of the exhibition as an active hub for education, culture, and entertainment, as well as a window through time that presents both a rich history and a bright future. 16

INTERVIEW

The heart of the Arab nation which is indispensable

Let’s talk about tourism and what it means to you as an artist. Since the past, tourism and travel have been very important; an essential and necessary thing to get to know and acquire Knowledge of the culture of peoples, or for renewing experiences and building ties with the others, perhaps for treatment or study. For me, travel is to traverse among cultures; it is welfare, benefit, and a window for the artist that fuels his soul and renews his artistic capacity.

Would you tell us about travel, tours, and their reflections on art? The art is varied in every spot of the world as it follows the customs of countries, its cultures, different traditions, artistic heritage of literature, poetry, music, represents the people of the country, their clothes and foods, so Art is the image of all these things, travel is a chance to obtain knowledge on the cultures of peoples and their customs, traditions, art, folkloric Dance, methods of life and it is essential that the artist discovers other peoples cultures to be able to develop his culture and artistic taste, then comes up with a combination between his art and the arts of other countries, this in return gives art and music a global dimension because of the interactions between an art and another art, a country and another country, such that is necessary and essential for the prosperity of the arts.

Marley, Michael Jackson, and other artists who influenced Western music. I gained knowledge on the European music, and the most important musicians such as Bach, Beethoven and other global music makers. I benefited in particular from Eastern music in Egypt, from the experiences of the artist Abdul Wahab, Algerian Warda and Faiza Ahmed, also in Lebanon Fairuz, Wadih el Safi and Al Rahbani, from Tunisia Abdul Hadi bin Khayat and all this have had a great influence on my art.

hotels ... open and safe city for more than 200 nationalities, which includes the most prominent landmarks in all over the world, but I, for example, when I long to visit the mainland, I like to go to Abu Dhabi, where it is characterized by its natural oasis, resorts and luxury hotels, as I like visiting the city of Al Ain and its good people, the areas of Hatta and Fujairah.

I live in Dubai, the city that never sleeps, a city rich in wonderful and various areas from the malls, parks and

ented, and they are not satisfied with practicing one kind of art, but they seek to be successful in many kinds of art.

It’s known that your art is not limited to singing, you have entered the world of acting through the film “Dukan Boutir” ... Tell us about your role and What are the most attractive plac- how special this experience is to you. es to visit in the UAE? It’s known that some artists are multi-tal-

Which cities have had the greatest impression on your art and your music?

As the experience of the artist enriched, he discovers his talents more and more, increasing his artistic size and becoming a publisher for several arts at once. I consider myself an acknowledgeable and ramified artist, and the singing itself requires the presence of high theatrical performance, so acting is inside me but I use it as the case requires.

I benefited from all Gulf States because of their converging and similar art, but after that I moved to all Europe and seen through my travels on the high Western arts, as well as the oriental art, then I visited America and I met Bob

For the film “Dukan Boutir” or “Boutir Shop”, it is a short film in which I perform several characters, as I change my entire features. The film carries a message of awareness, guidance, and direction, and Thank God it has won the audience goodwill.

Egypt is the Arab nation heart which is indispensable

When you sing any Arabic Song, you give it particularity and special taste, tell us about Om Kolthoum’s song you sang and why did you choose it in particular? Om Kalthoum’s songs are all wonderful, immortal and elegant, and all people have loved and memorized them, they are considered of eastern musical classics… I chose the song of “ Saloo Qalbi” because that song is characterized by certain features, as it is a chanting beautiful song composed by Al Sonbaty which had left great influence and echo, having a religious aspect, which praises the Messenger [peace be upon him], the song was written by the great Ahmed Shawky, and I have chosen to join the world of eastern musical chant and classical originality to perform a role which is different from the role I perform that includes cheerful and light national songs, I have performed this original song with Emirati spirit and by using the performance techniques we know as I added “Alayala rhythm” which added a beautiful harmony to the song in a manner which doesn’t contradict its originality, I have presented this song to Om Kolthoum lovers using “Balkhairi” performance, with modern music, and recent record , I wish you like it.

Egypt is where you studied; what does it mean to you as both a tourist and artistic country? Egypt has its great standing in history, religion and society, where we have trained, treated and learned music, by the best masters as Baligh Hamdy, Abd el-Halim Hafez and a great group of artists who presented melodies and helped me when I lived there, I remember one of them which is “The diamond band” of the artist Ahmed Hassan.

Egypt has always meant a lot to us, and it has great position in our hearts since childhood, as we are fascinated by its magic, heritage, history and art, it is the heart of the Arab nation which is indispensable.

Tell us about your cultural background in the world of singing? My art is emerged from the surrounding environment and folklore, I grew up in this environment which is rich in weddings, feasts and other occasions, all arts were available on which I grow up and memorized and then reflected on my art till I mastered those arts. I have much benefited from the rich cultural folklore of our country.

Any new songs coming up? Now, I am preparing for “ Fayrouzeyat Balkhair”, I am choosing a song for Fayrouz and presenting it with a gulf flavor, I am also waiting for my album “ Mona Lisa” which I have finished recording before two years, as I have dealt with the most prominent poets such as Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dr. Mane’ Saeed Al Otaiba, Mohammed Bin Ahmed Al Suwaidi and Al Amoudi. The album includes a variety of beautiful poems and lyrics composed by Fahd Al Jasmi.

“Mona Lisa” is a very catchy name… What is the reason for such naming? Honestly speaking, every time I go to France I visit the Louvre Museum and every time I wish to see the Mona Lisa, but I could not see it because of the crowds and congestion around it, and as you know, Mona Lisa is known for its mysterious smile described in poetry and novels. I am, too, famous in the Gulf for my smile. The name of the album bears an artistic touch and the rattling name is giving it a universal feature. I always call my albums by special names that are not necessarily names of particular songs.

Another one of the best parts of Spring is that it also makes you get excited to plan an extended vacation, one where you’ll want to check out a new city mostly on foot. Around the world, people celebrate the end of the dismal winter weather with unique festivals and traditions, some date back thousands of years and others are relatively new. The Holi Festival in India The Holi festival commemorates the victory of good over evil, brought about by the burning and destruction of the demoness named Holika. This was enabled through unwavering devotion to the Hindu god of preservation, Lord Vishnu. Holi got its name as the “Festival of Colors” from Lord Krishna, a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, who liked to play pranks on the village girls by drenching them in water and colors. The festival marks the end of winter and the abundance of the upcoming spring harvest season. People spend the day smearing colored powder all over each other’s faces, throwing colored water at each other, having parties, and dancing under water sprinklers. Bhang (a paste made from cannabis plants) is also traditionally consumed during the celebrations.

The Flower Parade in Holland The annual Flower Parade (Bloemencorso in Dutch) is a feast brimming with beautiful colors and delicious perfumes. Twenty huge floats and thirty lavishly decorated cars follow a 42 kilometre route from Noordwijk to Haarlem. Hundreds of thousands of visitors from Holland and abroad are drawn to the colorful flower spectacle every year. The Flower Parade starts on Saturday 22th April at 9.30 a.m. and finishes in Haarlem at 9 p.m. Around 3.30 p.m. the Flower Parade passes the Keukenhof. On Sunday April 23th you can admire the work put into the Flower Parade in Haarlem, where the floats remain on view until 5p.m. Millions of flowers and the work of hundreds of volunteers make the most amazing flower parade in the world possible. Make sure you find a good spot along the route, because hundreds of thousands of spectators don’t want to miss a second of this spectacular sight. 24

Drowning of Marzanna Festival in Poland Marzanna is a pagan springtime festival in Poland that signals the end of winter. It usually takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This old custom predates Christian rites, so Marzanna is not universally observed throughout Poland, but the “drowning” of Marzanna is still conducted as a way for Poles to stay in touch with their ancient heritage and have fun with superstitions and festive traditions. Marzanna represents winter or death, and the Sunday on which the Marzanna celebrations take place is sometimes called Death Sunday. On this day a straw or rag effigy of Marzanna (also known as Morena or Death) is constructed, sometimes by school children. The effigy is imbued with the negative qualities of the long, cold winter.

Cherry Blossom Festival in Japan A visit to Japan during sakura (cherry blossom) season is a rare pleasure, and highly recommended. Although the weather can be chilly and damp, the hotels full and the streets clogged with revelers, the sight of the delicate blossoms and their intoxicating effect on the people make for a wonderful experience. The city becomes awash in pink; enveloping everyone with their delicate fragrance; the petals falling, fluttering like gentle rain on the sidewalks and onto the hair of young women in their sakura-patterned kimonos.

Las Fallas Festival in Spain Las Fallas is a celebration of the coming of spring. It is a festival to wish a jubilant bon voyage to winter, where locals bid farewell to those cold days and even colder nights by building giant ninots (puppets or dolls) out of cardboard, wood, paper machè and plaster, and then burn them to the ground. There are spectacular fireworks set off from every angle. The ninots are made to look lifelike and usually fit in with current events, poking fun at Spanish politicians and celebrities. The massive structures are sometimes lifted into place by cranes on the day of la plantà or the rising, and they remain there until the 19th March, the day of the burning. Young men wander around the city with axes making little hard-to-spot holes in the ninots and stuffing them full of fireworks. Just before midnight the crowds in Valencia start to chant, the streetlights are turned off and finally at midnight the ninots are set on fire. What follows is an explosion of fireworks, roaring fires and full-on excitement.

floriade IN australia Floriade is a flower and entertainment festival held annually in Canberra’s Commonwealth Park featuring extensive displays of flowering bulbs with integrated sculptures and other artistic features. Floriade comes from the Latin word floriat, which means to design with flowers. The festival attracts tourists from around Australia and overseas in spring from mid September to mid October each year, and is considered the most important regular event for tourism in the Australian Capital Territory. It is also called “Australia’s Celebration of Spring”. After some controversy regarding an entry charge, admission to Floriade has been free for a number of years.

Songkran Festival in Thailand Songkran (Water Festival) is the occasion for family re-unions, temple visits and annual house cleaning. Many Thais observe the holidays by spending time with families and friends. Traditionally, Thais perform the Rod Nam Dum Hua ritual on the first day of Songkran, which is officially the National Elderly Day. During the ritual, young people would pour fragrant water into the elders’ palms as a gesture of humility and to ask for their blessings. The second day of Songkran is officially the National Family Day. Families would wake up early and give alms to the monks, then, ideally the rest of the day would be spent sharing quality family time together. An important religious ritual on Songkran is ‘Bathing the Buddha image’, in which devout Buddhists pour fragrant water over Buddha statues both at the temple and at home. More religious Thais would engage themselves in Buddhist ceremonies and merit-making activities throughout the holidays.

QASR AL HOSN Abu Dhabi’s symbolic birthplace, Qasr al Hosn is the emirate’s first permanent structure, which was home to the emirate’s ruling Al Nahyan family. A permanent, free-toenter exhibition at the Qasr al Hosn Centre tells the story of Abu Dhabi and its people through the city’s oldest building. Fascinating oral testimonies and historic photographs bring this important monument to life. Contemporary Emirati voices reflect on Abu Dhabi’s history and transformation and Qasr al Hosn’s key role as a vibrant symbol of Emirati heritage, culture and tradition. Qasr al Hosn began life in the 1760s as a coral and sea stone watchtower, with a commanding position overlooking the sea, later transformed into an impenetrable fort. Due to the shells’ reflective effect, the fort’s walls would sparkle in the sun offering a welcome coastal navigational tool for the region’s merchants. Mangrove was chosen to make the flooring and roof structure due to its natural strength and durability. During the exploration and discovery of oil between 1939 and the 1950s, Qasr al Hosn went through a period of expansion and an iconic palace enclosed the initial fort. The Father of the Nation, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, ordered a large scale renovation of Qasr al Hosn, transforming it

AL JAHILI FORT It is one of the largest castles in Al Ain and best-in-class example of local military architecture. Historically, Al Jahili Fort is of great importance as it is well associated with the history of the Al Nahyan Family. The construction of Al Jahili Fort began in 1891 under Sheikh Zayed the First and was completed in 1898. Its location was ideal for military, as well as residential purposes, being in close access to water resources and surrounded by fertile land for farming. It was suitable for use as a summer refuge of the Al Nahyan family from the humid coast of Abu Dhabi and provided shelter for the residents of Al Ain Oasis in times of political turmoil. Consequently, the fort remained a residence for the Al Nahyan family even after Sheikh Zayed the First passed away in 1909. Later the fort was assigned to the Al Ain Department of Antiquities and Tourism, which carried out resto-

rations during the mid-1980s in order to restore the castle to its original status. In order to preserve the historical significance of Al Jahili Fort, it underwent another comprehensive rehabilitation phase between 2007 and 2008, implemented by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH). As a result, the fort now houses a Visitor Information Centre with a shop and café, facilities for outdoor cultural events and wider exhibition spaces.

AL MURABBA FORT Near the Eastern Fort of Al Ain is Al Murabba Fort, the former police station from 1948. The three-story tower was named after its almost square shape, Al Murabba (murabba’ is Arabic for square). Nowadays the tower is open to the public and gives an impression of the architecture for government administrations in the Gulf region before the oil-era. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan ordered the building of this Al Murabba Fort during his rule of the Eastern Region. Originally it was built as a surveillance tower and quarter for the guards. Later the tower was used as a police station and local prison, but also as a gathering place for festivities and formal meetings of the ruler. The later expanded police station was called after the fort, Al Murabba Police.

bi was little more than a small fishing and trading port, and the isolated fort was used as a defense against bandits. Al Maqtaa Fort is one of the oldest structures in the city, and the intricate architecture is well worth preserving. It’s also difficult to reach Al Maqtaa Fort, as it’s located not on the mainland but on a small rocky island at the mouth of the Khor al Maqtaa. The majority of visitors just head to the Maqtaa Bridge to snap a few photos of this architectural gem.

MUREIJEB CASTLE Located in the northeast of Al Qattara area, consisting of the castle and two separate towers, so it seems as if there were three castles in spite of that there is only one castle, and one of the two separate towers is cylindrical and is located in south-eastern part, and it was specialized for control and defense, and provided of shooting holes, and intended for military purposes,

while the other tower is square in shape and is located on the north-western side, and likely it was used for the purpose of housing and residence.

AL A’ANKAH FORT The fort lies 55 km west of Al Ain City in Al A’ankah Village on the trucks’ road between Al Ain and Abu Dhabi. It was built in the second half of the nineteenth century by Sheikh Saeed bin Tahnoon who ruled the emirate of Abu Dhabi from 1845 to 1855. Its rectangular two story building and tower are surrounded by an octagonal fence with loopholes for archery and gun-shooting.

UNIQUE SLICES OF SRI LANKA

T

he Fernando family – Sri Lanka’s most prominent tea producers and founders of Dilmah Tea – founded a new collection of hotels. Resplendent Ceylon has been formed to create and manage a collection of small, luxury resorts offering a unique ‘trail’ across Sri Lanka. They offer the upscale traveler a range of authentic experiences linked to Sri Lanka’s history, culture and nature. Like Dilmah, they have a passionate commitment to quality, authenticity and sustainability.

The family’s first venture into hotels was the opening of Ceylon Tea in 2005 which remains Sri Lanka’s first Relais & Chateaux property. It comprises four luxurious colonial era tea planters’ bungalows, restored to impeccable taste and connected by walking trails through the Fernando’s own tea plantations. Guests can follow the Tea Trail from one unique bungalow to the next, staying a night or two at each, or just laze in one. Thanks to unprecedented popularity, Tea Trails was extended to include an additional bungalow.

Then on to watch the tea pluckers pick two leaves and a bud with deft hands. Then to the factory where the all-important conversion to “made” black tea happens. The machinery used is of very traditional British design, some as old as 100 years. The process is a very artisanal one, unchanged for a century. Oslo The capital and the most populous city in the country of Norway, Oslo is said to be a place where art had its reincarnation, in a much finer and classy way. The resplendent museums and art galleries in the city stand as a proof of its richness. In addition to it, like cherry on the top of a cake, the city is covered in a blanket of lakes, forests and other works of nature making it the next best place to be on your vacation planner.

Bergen Bergen is Norway’s second largest city, and lies clambering up the mountain sides, overlooking the sea, embracing you. You can roam through living history in this modern city, before continuing on to explore the wildest and loveliest fjords of Norway. On a Norwegian scale, Bergen is a large city, but one with a small-town charm and atmosphere. Bergen is famous for the seven mountains surrounding the city center, the Hanseatic Wharf, the fish market, and one of Norway’s biggest cultural events, the Bergen International Festival, which is held there each year.

The Svalbard Islands The Svalbard Islands are located in the Arctic Ocean, halfway between Norway and the North Pole. There, you will find untouched arctic wilderness and unique wildlife in a setting that is both rugged and fragile at the same time.Default Historically, both whaling and trapping have been major activities in the archipelago, but now sustainability is the guiding principle in every way: Nearly two thirds of the surface of Svalbard is protected and consists of several nature reserves, national parks, bird sanctuaries and even a Geo-Topical protected area.

In light of your travels to several Arab and foreign countries, how do you see tourism in the UAE?

tourism. However, I have a great desire to visit China and watch the Great Wall of China, and Japan in order to be closely familiarized with the life system in that well-organized and successful country, as I have heard too much about its discipline, organization and different lifestyles.

Generally speaking, all UAE tourism authorities and departments in each and every emirate are making large scale efforts for promoting tourism and attracting tourists from all countries of the world. Most of the UAE families, upon traveling to any internal destination, are looking for family tourism, particularly in the current rainy conditions, as they always look for

In your opinion, what are the destinations and times which attract the tourists most? There is nothing more wonderful than this rainy weather which the Europeans adore and make them come from everywhere to enjoy their time. However, Dubai is an appropriate tourism destination throughout the year and, unlike other destinations, it has no particular seasons. It is a source of great honor to see most of the world’s renowned figures, businesspersons and wealthy people coming to Dubai to enjoy the wonderful rainy weather.

Where do you spend your recreational times at the level of Arab countries? Frankly speaking, I was one of the lovers of Beirut due to its diverse climate and areas, as you find yourself amidst a lot of diverse environments in one place; e.g. mountain, green areas and sea, in addition to its extremely beautiful nature, but the latest political events have compelled me to make fewer visits recently.

Which other Arab Country do you like to travel to? I am a fan of Egypt; I adore its simplicity and overcrowdedness, as for me, Egypt is the overcrowded public areas… when I visit Egypt, I do not head for high level areas, but rather, I go to the areas which carry the originality and history of the Egyptian people. I like eating at Al Hussain, Al Sayeda Zainab and I love Alexandria. In a nutshell, I go to Egypt for Egypt, and for me, Egypt is embodied by those simple people and their light souls and sense of humor.

In Europe, what is the preferred destination of Saeed Al Mamari and when? All my followers and friends know that I am a lover of Paris which has a special

What are the most important elements preferred by you in the visited destination?

standing for me. Its nature is different from other European cities, as it has the history and civilization. London, too, is one of my most beloved cities, as it is beloved by the gulf nationals since their early childhood. Almost all gulf nationals have visited London tens or rather hundreds of times. It is a beautiful city where you find a lot of things which distinguish it from a lot of other European cities.

What are the European places which you have discovered recently & where you found enjoyment & recreation? About a couple of years ago, I liked areas beside Munich in Germany, which are the countryside areas such as Koson, Jarmish and Salisburg in Austria due to their green nature, as they have extremely distinctive seasons where you see green areas throughout the range of vision, thus representing an altogether different and unique European experience.

If you have a very short vacation, where do you like to spend it? Istanbul is the destination I›d like to visit in my short vacations, even if a weekend. It has an unparalleled characteristic, represented by a large number of historic and civilization scenes throughout the city, which make me feel that its civilization touches me personally. Most importantly, it is a Muslim city, so you do not have to be worried about food, dealing or understanding, as you feel it has an Arabian sense. Turkey is a high level tourism country.

Weather comes first and foremost; and, most importantly, I like to be different from other people in terms of timing of travel. In summer, it is impossible for me to travel to London, because it is almost always overcrowded by Arab people. So, my travel times are contrary to all other people. For example, my travels to Europe always take place in December, October, November or December when the summer season comes to an end and all people are back to their countries. At that time, I find the place tranquil, appropriate and enjoyable for me.

At the professional level, what are the coming works of the presenter and actor Saeed Al Mamari? I am on a holiday for the time being. As for acting, more than one work have been offered to me but I have not yet decided. Anyway, I have a ready series to be broadcasted in next Ramadan, which is “Dar Al Zein”. In addition, at present, I have some participations, including some coverage for ‘Mother of the Nation Festival’ to be held in current March. I have also received an invitation from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism to take part in the tourism p r o motion festival in Sharm Al Sheikh with the UAE fashion designer Mona Al Mansoori.

What about your Asian destinations? Actually, I am not a lover of the Asian
