What about the charitable and cultural initiatives and awareness-raising campaigns adopted by the Mall during the past period? Yas mall is continuously supporting the charitable and cultural campaigns, it offered a lot of social initiatives and campaigns during last year such as the initiatives of reading year, which was launched under the patronage of the UAE leadership, aiming at attracting readers to read and learn about future generations. As part of his support to the “the year of giving” objectives, the noble initiative announced by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, President of the UAE, which focuses on consolidating the social responsibility in the private sectors corporations, we are currently organizing a lot of charitable initiatives for this year. In last February, we signed a memorandum of understanding with Make A Wish Foundation, it is a non-profit organization established to achieve the wishes of children with life-threatening illness to give them hope, strength and happiness to complete their therapeutic journey. Yas mall in collaboration with Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care & Special Needs in March 2017 has celebrated the international day of Down syndrome under the slogan: “My voice is my society”, these events were organized to promote and encourage social solidarity and positive awareness of Down Syndrome, the events included an awareness campaign of 150 children with Down syndrome with their parents and teachers.

DUBAI TO BE HOME TO WORLD'S FIRST ROTATING SKYSCRAPER
A
New York-based architecture firm has revealed ambitious plans to develop the world’s tallest skyscraper that will hang above the earth – quite literally – and hopes to construct it over Dubai. The proposal for the Analemma Tower, created by Clouds Architecture Office, will see the building suspended from an orbiting asteroid using a space-based supporting foundation. According to the architect, “By placing a large asteroid into orbit over earth, a high strength cable can be lowered towards the surface of earth from which a super tall tower can be suspended”. 20
ISSUE 26
MAY 2017
A JOURNEY TO SPACE Since this new tower typology is suspended in the air, it can be constructed anywhere in the world and transported to its final location. The proposal calls for Analemma to be constructed over Dubai, which has proven to be a specialist in tall building construction at one fifth the cost of New York City construction. The tower, which will be in constant movement in a figure-eight form, will return to exactly the same position in the sky each day. “It will move at its slowest speed at the top and bottom of the figure eight allowing the possibility for the tower’s occupants to interface with the planet’s surface at these points,” the architect said. The proposed orbit is calibrated so the slowest part of the tower’s trajectory occurs over New York City. Residents will have to use parachutes to reach the earth.
ASTONISHING FEATURES The building will be divided into different sections with business conducted at the lower end of the tower, along with areas for dining, shopping and entertainment. The sleeping quarters are approximately two-third of the way up – right above a garden – and devotional activities will be conducted in the highest sections. The size and shape of windows will change with height to account for pressure and temperature differentials. The amount of daylight will increase by 40 minutes at the top of the tower due to the curvature of the earth. The tower will get its power from spacebased solar panels. Water will be filtered and recycled in a semi-closed loop system, and will be captured from clouds and rainwater. While seeming a bit far-fetched, the architect stressed that the tower could become reality in the near future. Manipulating asteroids is no longer relegated to science fiction. In 2015 the European Space Agency sparked a new round of investment in asteroid mining concerns by proving with its Rosetta mission that it’s possible to rendezvous and land on a spinning comet. “NASA has scheduled an asteroid retrieval mission for 2021 which aims to prove the feasibility of capturing and relocating an asteroid,” the architect said. If completed, the tower will demand premium rates. “Harnessing the power of planetary design thinking, it taps into the desire for extreme height, seclusion and constant mobility,” the architect said. If the recent boom in residential towers proves that sales price per square foot rises with floor elevation, then Analemma Tower will command record prices, justifying its high cost of construction.
It would be the world’s tallest tower; the only way to leave it would be by parachute, and it would orbit the earth entirely in 24 hours

Bruges The historic center of Bruges, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is closed to cars, making it easily explored on foot. It’s an impressive city, stunningly beautiful and culturally active, that you can also explore by boat along quiet canals. Actually, you can do it well also by horse-drawn carriage. Although Bruges is small, it’s filled to the brim with architectural and artistic treasures, folklore, chocolate shops and lace boutiques. Moreover, there’s no lack of fine restaurants. One popular place in the city is The Beguinages, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s the home of the nuns of the order of Saint Benedict. Another is the Halve Maan Brewery, a family-owned brewery, and creator of the famous ‘Brugse Zot’ beer. If you’re on a budget buy the discount Bruges City Card or tour the countryside outside the city by bicycle.
Mechelen Mechelen, a small and picturesque city of quaint shops and car-free areas, was once the capital of present-day Belgium and Holland. Today it’s best known for its carillon school where students from all over the world come to learn to play church bells. In fact, one of the most pleasant experiences in Mechelen is to sit in an outdoor café sipping while listening to bell music drifting through the streets.
Antwerp Known for its vibrant nightlife, funky bars and restaurants and numerous festivals, Belgians see Antwerp as the “capital of cool.” The Antwerp Fashion Academy produced a group of avant-garde designers who made a big splash on the fashion scene in the 1980’s. Consequently, they became known as “The Antwerp Six.” Nowadays, the Academy continues to churn out new, hot talent. If shopping is not your thing, discover the compact center of Antwerp. It juxtaposes beautiful medieval buildings with modern architectural landmarks. You’ll find plenty historic buildings, as well as the biggest diamond center in the world. Antwerp is an art-loving city with which the name Rubens is eternally linked. Still, more than 400 years after the birth of this brilliant painter, it’s still possible to see the extent to which Rubens left his mark on the city.

Ghent Ask a Belgian where they like to travel within their country, many will tell you about the city of Ghent. Belgium’s third largest city with most of its town center closed to cars, it’s best best explored by foot. Of course, there’s also the possibility of bicycles, or by boat along its elegant canals. Ghent is an unassuming, un-touristy city filled with university students, linger-as-longas-you-like cafes, well-priced restaurants and vibrant energy. It’s a city with great mustard, Stropke beer (which is Flemish for noose), and the ten-day Ghent Celebrations. The latter is held every July and the city goes all out with theater performances, concerts, singing, dancing, and drinking. Ghent boasts an Opera House, 18 museums, 100 churches and over 400 historical buildings.
Brussels Brussels is quickly gaining a reputation as one of Europe’s must-see destinations. Moreover, with its central location in the heart of Europe, it’s easily accessible by air or high-speed rail from neighboring countries. It’s an international metropolis – a mosaic of languages and cultures – and the home of the EU, NATO and myriad organizations. English is widely spoken, making it a great place for even a novice French-speaker to get by without an issue. Brussels is a classic European city with small-town charm and cosmopolitan attractions. Among its most celebrated attractions is the Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site originally built in the 13th century; arguably, it’s Europe’s most beautiful medieval square.
Bastogne In this town close to the Luxembourg border, thousands of American soldiers died in WWII’s “Battle of the Bulge.” On the Grand Place of the town there’s a Sherman Tank from the 11th US Armored Division and just outside town, you’ll find the Mardasson Memorial, which also honors the American fallen.
