Dear Guests
For those of you who are departing from, or returning to Muscat, you may notice that the construction of the brand new state-ofthe-art Muscat International Airport is nearing completion. The extensive new facilities will be inaugurated step by step starting from November 2017. We are always looking at ways to further improve our guests’ comfort and overall travel experience with us. With this in mind, we are also building a new crew reporting centre at the new Muscat airport. Our Oman Air crews will have their own security check points and baggage handling areas, thus helping to free up the passenger terminal for valued guests. The improved airport experience will be further complemented by our brand new and luxurious lounges in the departure and arrival areas. The construction of the 30 new B737 Max aircraft, which are the first to be introduced to our fleet, is nearly finished. By January 2018, this will not only offer you even more comfortable flights but also reflect our Corporate Social Responsibility, due to the increased environmental friendliness – with reduced CO2 emissions – of these aircraft. As you may know, Oman Air is again sponsoring a team in the Extreme Sailing Series. It is encouraging to see that Team Oman Air is now in pole position, having claimed victories in Barcelona, Spain and Hamburg, Germany. We look forward to seeing how Team Oman Air progresses as the competition continues. Talking of world-class sport, we have also agreed to sponsor the prestigious NBO Golf Classic Grand Final for the fifth consecutive year. And, our network is continuing to grow. A key part of this is our new codeshare agreement with German airline Lufthansa. The new codeshare flights are meeting the high demand, thanks to their
convenient arrival and connection times. Oman Air departures and arrivals will move to Lufthansa’s new Terminal-2 Satellite at Munich Airport on 28 September. Hence, an even more seamless connection to our codeshare Lufthansa flights to destinations across Europe and North America will be granted. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation has designated 27 September as World Tourism Day. Oman Air is proud to be a trusted ambassador of Oman tourism, spreading the values of Omani hospitality to people far and wide. We look forward to helping celebrate this important day. September also marks Malaysia Day on the 16th. Allow me to take this opportunity to wish all our guests from Malaysia a happy Malaysia Day. Let me close this introduction by thanking you for your highly valued loyalty by choosing to fly with us. On behalf of the entire Oman Air team, I wish you a pleasant flight and hope we will welcome you back soon.

Jabal Al Akhdar
Latitude: 23° 8' 34" N Longitude: 57° 31' 56" E
The Sultanate of Oman’s famous Jabal Al Akhdar peak forms part of the magnificent Al Hajar Mountain range. For travellers in search of a luxury getaway high in the mountains – overlooking some of the most spectacular terrain on the Arabian Peninsula – this is where you want to be. • Far from the hustle and bustle of modern life, Jabal Al Akhdar – with its highest point at just under 3 000 metres above sea level – offers an escape to solitude, nature, fresh air and amazing panoramic views.
expert Omani guides on a traverse along the side of the giant Jabal Al Akhdar canyon. • The climbing is interspersed with gentle hiking through the wild olive trees and mountain greenery, during which expert guides share their stories of the region. Finally, you wind your way back up the mountain to spend the rest of your afternoon breathing fresh, crisp mountain air, and enjoying some of the most spectacular mountain views in Oman. (The Via-Ferrata is also open to outside guests who book 48 hours in advance).
• Here you can expect to be surrounded by mountains, old, uninhabited villages, fruit terraces built into the sides of the mountain, as well as countless small roads and pathways that have been used since ancient times to connect one mountain village to another. Jabal Al Akhdar is also known for its Mediterranean climate, which provides a sanctuary of blissfully cool temperatures during Oman’s hot summer months.
• Jabal Al Akhdar is one of the true travel delights of the Sultanate of Oman. Of course, a stay in a world-class luxury lodge on the mountainside is a dream travel trip come true, but the mountain can also be explored via other options like a self-drive four-wheel-drive trip, or with one of the several tour guide companies that operate out of Muscat and Nizwa.
• Of course, these cooler temperatures and spectacular terrain is something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by travellers in search of a luxurious getaway – especially at establishments like the luxury Alila Jabal Akhdar boutique hotel.
• Multiple-day treks in the region can also be organised with locally-based guides, where you’ll have the chance to explore Jabal Al Akhdar’s charming old mountain villages, many of which have been in existence for hundreds of years. (The picturesque, abandoned village of Wadi Bani Habib, and the popular Misfat Al Abriyyin on the lower slopes of the mountain are highlights).
• Perched at 2 000 metres above sea level, Alila Jabal Akhdar, which in July this year was voted one of the ‘Coolest hotels in the world for 2017’ by the prestigious UK-based travel magazine Escapism, is a haven for adventure travellers, nature lovers and those seeking a retreat from the desert heat.
• The area around Jabal Al Akhdar is particularly renowned for growing walnuts, pomegranates and Oman’s famed damask roses, which when in bloom, cover the mountain side in swathes of pink. (Rosewater is also produced in the region, using traditional distilling processes).
• Besides its luxurious setting and magnificent suites and villas on offer, Alila Jabal Akhdar has been reaching new heights in hospitality – literally – this year. The luxury hotel has drawn on its dramatic surroundings to offer adventurous guests the chance to experience the region while doing a nearby Via-Ferrata – a protected, safe climbing route – that has recently been installed here according to international standards.

Sri Lanka: 10 reasons to travel to the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’ Few places in the world can offer the traveller such a remarkable combination of stunning landscapes, pristine beaches, captivating cultural heritage and adventure travel experiences – as well as some sublime luxury accommodation options – as Sri Lanka does. Here’s ten reasons to travel to the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’. Central Sri Lanka: Trekking paradise With such a varied landscape – combined with exotic wildlife – Sri Lanka offers some spectacular opportunities for trekking. Some of the more exceptional trails can be found in central Sri Lanka – like at the Sinharaja rainforest, the cloud-forests of Horton Plains, the Knuckles Mountains, and the Hakgala Strict Natural Reserve. Along with the trekking, there’s also some spectacular mountainbiking trails.
The Old Town and lighthouse at Galle – relics of the country’s colonial past
Watery adventure With over 1 600 kilometres of coastline, Sri Lanka is prime territory for travellers in search of their next watery adventure. In fact, Sri Lanka is now well-established as a world-class surfing destination (the southern and eastern coastline is especially good). The diving at some of Sri Lanka’s offshore reefs and wrecks can also be excellent, and it is one of the few places in the world where you have the chance to scuba dive or freedive with the elusive Sperm Whale.

There’s also the former royal capital of Kandy, with its distinctive architecture, art and traditional music; and the Old Town and Fort at Galle, which is a relic of the country’s colonial heritage. Travels in taste For foodies, Sri Lanka offers a spectacular adventure in taste. As the Sri Lankan tourism board explains, ‘The cultivation of many types of rice, spices, vegetables and fruit, coupled with past foreign influences, ensures that Sri Lanka enjoys a varied and select cuisine. As a staple, rice is consumed with an assortment of colourful curries (eggplant, potato, green banana, chicken, and fish) that range in potency from delicately-spiced, to near-dynamite! Other Sri Lankan staples include hoppers (a pancake-like snack), string hoppers (steamed rice noodles) and pittu (a mixture of flour and coconut). Seafood lovers will rejoice at the fresh fish, prawns, crab, squid and crayfish available.’

Oman’s Best Beaches: Sun, sand and sea in the Sultanate From the Musandam Peninsula in the north, all along the coastline down to Dhofar, in the south, the Sultanate of Oman has some of the most desirable stretches of beach and shoreline in the Middle East and the world.
Arabian Nights in Musandam
Whether you’re looking for a secret beach to escape the crowds; a place to snorkel and observe the Sea of Oman’s magnificent underwater marine life with your friends; or a private beach and umbrella you can lounge around under with a five star luxury hotel as your backdrop – the Sultanate of Oman’s over 3000 kilometres of coastline has something special for all beach lovers. Here are some highlights from all corners of the country.
Tucked away around the base of the Musandam Peninsula’s giant sea-cliffs are dozens of tiny, secret beaches that can only be accessed by boat, or with the several marine tour operators based in Khasab – Musandam’s main port – that offer day and overnight excursions out to these beaches on traditional-style Omani dhows.

For visitors to Ras Al Jinz, luxury tented accommodation is available at the on-site Ras Al Jinz Scientific Centre and Eco-lodge.
For the adventurous traveller, the chance to camp overnight here – under the Musandam stars, next to the glowing coals of your campfire, and with the only sounds being the gentle washing of waves on the beach – is like something straight out of a classic Arabian Nights folk tale. Further south of Ras Al Jinz is the small fishing town of Ras Asilah which, due to its perfect wind and wave conditions during summer, is a favourite spot for kite-surfers and surfers in the Gulf region.
Muscat is blessed with several stretches of long sandy beach where you can immerse yourself in a world of sun, sand, saltwater, and fresh Sea of Oman air. One of these is the popular Shatti Al Qurum beach where you’ll find happy beach-goers every afternoon of the week, and which has a bunch of coffee shops, restaurants and hotels dotted behind its around 8 kilometre stretch of sand.
The seas of Southern Oman The over 5 kilometre-long stretch of soft white sand that makes up Al Mughsayl beach is around an hour’s drive south-west of Salalah. Swimming here is best done during the winter months when the sea is flat and calm, but during the summer Khareef monsoon season, you can check out the Al Marneef blowholes, which are a local favourite. Due to the giant waves surging onto the coastline at this time of year, and the funnelling action of holes in the rocky shoreline, huge plumes of water are forced up to a height of 20 metres and more into the air. You can also pack a picnic lunch, and take shelter in the popular Al Marneef Cave, overlooking the blowholes and beach.

• Masirah Island: The ‘desert island’ of Masirah is located just off the central, eastern coastline of Oman, and a classic ‘get away from it all’ type destination.
The coastline around Muscat, however, also has dozens of small, sheltered, and semi-secret beaches where you and your friends can often have the whole beach to yourself. Some of these are only a few metres wide, and you’ll have to carefully explore the coastline yourself to discover them – or befriend a local to show you where they are.
• Daymaniyat Islands: The Daymaniyats are a collection of rocky islands that are around 30 minutes by boat from Barka – the small coastal town just outside of Muscat. They’re home to some magnificent marine life and bird life, and popular with boaters and divers.
For something more lavish, the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa’s stretch of private beach is a Muscat classic – with all the class you’d expect from a luxury 5 Star offering. For outside guests, a ‘Day in Paradise’ pass can be purchased, which allows access to the resort’s 600 metre-long private beach and pool facilities.
• Mina Fahal Island: ‘Fahal Island’ is a small limestone island around 4 kilometres offshore of Muscat, and offers excellent diving and snorkelling. • Al Hallaniyat Islands: The rugged, barren, and relatively unknown Al Hallaniyat Islands are located off the Dhofar coastline in the south of Oman. This is where you’ll find pristine coral reefs, huge shoals of fish, migratory whales, and even ancient shipwrecks – like the recently discovered wooden wreck believed to that of the famed Portuguese vessel, Esmerelda.
Al Bustan Palace Hotel offers another stunning stretch of private beach close to Muscat (which can be accessed by day-visitors to the hotel). The beach fronts the iconic Al Bustan Palace Hotel building, and is surrounded by magnificent mountainous terrain.

The complex will incorporate the latest state-of-theart cinema technology and will bring films to life in ever greater, real-life detail.

Oman Adventure
Barcelona & Hamburg: Team Oman Air take the win! More often than not, success in life comes from hard work; from gaining experience and putting it into practice; and from concentration, focus and the knowledge that you are on the right path. And so it has been for the Oman Air team in the ultra-competitive Extreme Sailing Series, the global yacht racing circuit that showcases high-speed hydro-foiling catamarans in the Middle East, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Approaching the half-way point of the 2017 season and the highlyexperienced Team Oman Air crew was dealing with an unfamiliar emotion – frustration. Despite several race wins at the three regattas to date in Muscat, Qingdao in China and Madeira, and multiple podium finishes, they had yet to win one of the Extreme Sailing Series Acts overall. But, it was at this point that the confidence born of experience came into play. Veteran British sailor Pete Greenhalgh, a core member of the Oman Air team and a previous winner of the Extreme Sailing Series, provided a calm perspective. “We have been in and amongst it for the whole season and we are competitive, we have just got to do a bit better,” he said after the Madeira event. “It’s not back to the drawing board or anything like that, it is all very small margins. It’s all snakes and ladders and we will have our turn.” Well, for the next two Extreme Sailing Series Acts – in Barcelona and then Hamburg – the team’s ambition was fully rewarded, and things took a rapid turn for the better. In Barcelona, the top four teams in the eight-strong fleet were separated by only 10 points going into the final race, and with 24 points going to the winner the final outcome was wide open. Despite the pressure the Oman Air team put in a flawless
30
Oman Adventure performance, crossing the finish line to win the race more than two minutes ahead of arch-rivals the SAP Extreme Sailing Team. Then, in Hamburg they picked up exactly where they had left off – with two wins in the opening two races to give then the perfect launch pad towards back-to-back victories. Even so, the Phil Robertson skippered team of Greenhalgh, Nasser Al Mashari, James Wierzbowski and Ed Smyth had to fight for every metre of water on the tight courses on the River Elbe. On the final day, Oman Air saw their early advantage chipped away, with the ever tenacious SAP just points behind going into the double-points final. Once again it went down to the wire, with SAP winning the race but Oman Air right behind to clinch the event win and climb to the top of the Extreme Sailing Series leaderboard. Omani bowman Al Mashari said: “It has been challenging racing but it has all worked out, and all our hard work has paid off. After winning in Barcelona it was great to come to Hamburg and be able to win again and take the lead of the Extreme Sailing Series. “After the frustrations at the beginning of the season we can now look ahead to the next events with a new confidence and belief,” he added. Oman Heritage
Treasures from the National Museum: The Land of Frankincense In recognition of the importance of the frankincense trade across the ages in Oman, four sites in the Sultanate have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list: al-Baleed, Khor Rori (Sumhuram), Shisr (Ubar) and Wadi Dawkah. Here, the National Museum’s Director-General, Jamal al-Moosawi, as well as the Museum’s Head of Curatorial Unit, Moza al-Wardi, show us some relics from Oman’s long and fascinating history of Frankincense trade. (With photography by Saleh al-Ruzaqi/The National Museum). Dhofar Governorate is one of the few places on Earth where the frankincense tree (Boswellia sacra) naturally thrives, thanks to the south-west monsoon – a climatic phenomenon that brings moisture-laden winds, clouds and a rain shadow to the region each summer. Boswellia sacra once grew only in isolated groves beyond the Dhofar mountains, but the tree’s modern distribution now extends from Jabal Samhan – which produces the best grades of frankincense – into the eastern highlands of Yemen. Longdistance trade in frankincense was ongoing by the 3rd millennium BCE and included links to Mesopotamia, Indus and Egypt. Here are some of the fascinating relics from Oman’s fascinating frankincense past…

Amphawa: Bangkok’s fabulous floating market
For travellers, Bangkok’s floating food markets are about widely-smiling vendors under broad-brimmed hats, brightly coloured wooden boats in packed canals, traditional food stalls – and of course, memorable meals prepared from exotic seafood, spices, and fresh fruit. Here, Wings of Oman goes on a watery journey to Amphawa Floating Market – which many consider to be one of Thailand’s best. Amphawa is an iconic and beautiful piece of Thailand travel. It offers a glimpse into the time when waterways and canals
outnumbered the roads in Bangkok, and when the local people travelled more often than not by boat.
34
Landmark Travels The market itself is located on a bustling section of canal – around 90 kilometres south-west of Bangkok – where the Mae Klong River meets the Gulf of Thailand, and where ancient channels have provided irrigation to the villages in the region for hundreds of years. Still to this day, while many floating markets in Thailand seem to be staged for visitors and tourists, Amphawa tends to feel much more authentic.
see Buddhist monks making their rounds by boat and the local people offering food and alms as they paddle by. However, most visitors arrive around midday to enjoy seafood lunches of shrimp and shellfish that are cooked on boats and handed up to diners on the bank. By evening, the canal’s banks throng with people feasting on street-food style meals prepared on barbecues, and who are on the lookout for bargains at the craft and curio stands that line the
It is a dream destination for travellers in search of something nostalgic. Its banks are lined with attractive teak wood shophouses that open onto the canal, and in true floating market style, its waters are packed with vendors on their traditional wooden boats, selling fresh fruit, seafood dishes, and other treats like Thai iced black coffee, to passers-by. If you arrive early enough, you’ll

shoreline. At the same time, Amphawa comes alive with coloured lights strung along the canal bridges, traditional music, and tempting smells of an endless array of exotic food. It all makes Amphawa a delightful place to be.
Whether it’s at the iconic floating food markets; at the country’s countless street-food vendors; or at some of the region’s top restaurants, Thailand is a spectacular place to be for foodies. Recently, in July 2017, CNN Travel readers listed seven Thai dishes among the ‘World’s 50 Best Foods’ on its Facebook poll. The seven Thai dishes in the list are Tom Yum Kung (4th), Phat Thai (5th), Som Tam Papaya Salad (6th), Massaman Curry (10th), Green Curry (19th), Chicken Fried Rice (24th), and Mu Nam Tok Salad (36th). Next time you’re in Thailand – don’t miss out on any of them!
Amphawa is near enough to Bangkok to just spend the morning or afternoon, but with so much to see, many people stay overnight in the area – where there are some charming home-stays and lodges available for accommodation. These give you the chance to experience a different side of Thailand as you stay in real family homes, share traditional meals, and learn about provincial life. While staying overnight, you can also take an evening boat trip to see Amphawa’s famous canal fireflies. Boat trips to some of the nearby Buddhist temples are another interesting way to see the area, especially if you’re in a group. While doing so, you get the chance to peep into the lives of local people living in their traditional riverbank homes.
Visitor Information For more info on travelling to Bangkok and the rest of Thailand, visit the official Amazing Thailand tourism sites www.tatnews.org and www.amazing-thailand.com, or check out the Bangkok First Time Guide at www.bangkok.com
Other floating markets to explore around Bangkok include Taling Chan, which is located only 12 kilometres from downtown Bangkok. Taling Chan is open all day, and has just enough boats to be called a floating market, as the Bangkok First Time Guide explains. It also has a large local market attached to it. About an hour-and-a-half’s drive from central Bangkok, there’s also the huge Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, which bustles with people and energy, and which is Thailand’s best-known floating market. In central Bangkok, the Bang Nam Pheung Floating Market is a modestly sized market, but filled with a fascinating array of foods and culinary treats to explore – which makes it perfect for travelling foodies.
