Dear Guests It is a great pleasure to welcome you on board your Oman Air flight today. I hope you are all enjoying your summers – it seems like only yesterday that I was wishing our guests a happy New Year! I now take great pleasure in wishing all our guests from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan a happy Independence Day. Temperatures in the Muscat region are now cooling a little and the Monsoon season is in full swing in Salalah, the colourful city of southern Oman. Tourists from far and wide are making the most of our increased amount of flights to the region and are gathering to marvel at the lush green landscapes and stunning natural beauty on display at this time of year. The demand for many of the destinations we fly to is continuing to rise and we are delighted to have seen a promising uptake of the codeshare flights we operate with Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines and Sri Lankan Airlines. We are also about to start codeshare agreements with Malaysia Airlines and Kenya Airways, opening up a new range of exciting and exotic destinations around the world. Those of you who are visiting Europe, can make the most of the long summer days by exploring some of the exciting festivals, fairs and cultural events taking place across the continent. From Europe’s largest ballooning event, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in the UK, to the world’s largest techno party, the Street

Parade on the banks of Lake Zurich, there are so many things to see and do. All you need to do is decide where to go and enjoy the ambience, safe in the knowledge that we will fly you to and from the continent in comfort. As we continue on our journey to ‘Become the Best’, we would like to thank our guests for your continued patronage and loyalty. Many thanks for choosing to fly with us. Must-see Oman

Wadi Darbat

Latitude: 17° 6' 19" N Longitude: 54° 27' 11" E

In Oman during the summer months, while the rest of the Arabian Peninsula is swelteringly hot, Salalah and Dhofar are where you and your family can come chill out – literally – in the region’s cool ‘Khareef’ monsoon weather. In particular, Wadi Darbat, with its flowing waterways, green vegetation, and picnic area, offers a blissfully refreshing, scenic and memorable day out. • Oman’s southern region of Dhofar is currently experiencing the blissfully cool, wet weather of the Khareef monsoon season, which takes place from around June to September every year.

• Keep in mind that Wadi Darbat is one of the most visited spots in Dhofar during the Khareef season, so if you want to avoid the crowds, try get here early in the morning, or late in the afternoon.

• During this time, the streams and waterfalls come alive with flowing water; the temperatures drop into the blissfully cool mid-20 degree Celsius range; and the vegetation and foliage in the valleys and surrounding hills around Dhofar turn bright green with the Khareef’s constant light mist and rain.

• Both Wadi Darbat and Darbat Falls are excellent spots for photographs, so bring your best gear and lenses and make sure your battery packs are charged! • Also near Salalah is Al Mughsail Beach, with its Marneef Cave and Al Mughsail blowholes, which shoot giant plumes of water into the air, due to the giant waves surging onto the coastline at this time of year.

• The valleys and waterways of Wadi Darbat are one of the most spectacular spots to visit at this time – where you can relax with your family with a picnic lunch or barbeque, and soak up the peace and tranquility of the area’s natural surroundings.

• There’s also the birdwatching paradise of Khor Rori lagoon, and the famous Souq Al Hafah market in Salalah itself. Another attraction is the old fishing village of Taqah, known for its picturesque Dhofari-style houses.

• Dhofar is famous for its hundreds of mountain springs, which all overflow during the wet Khareef season. One of these is Darbat Falls, which is just next to Wadi Darbat itself, and well worth checking out.

• Finally, don’t miss out on this year’s Salalah Tourism Festival, which began in late June, and which runs until 31 August. The festival is supported by Oman Air and features the very best in Dhofari and Omani culture.

• If you want to get active at Wadi Darbat, you can go for a swim in the natural lake that forms here at this time of year, or head out on one of the paddle boats or kayaks that are for hire here.

Visitor Information Wadi Darbat and the Darbat Falls are just over an hour’s drive east of Salalah, and make for an ideal morning or afternoon trip out of the city. Wadi Darbat itself has been transformed into a nature park (with picnic areas and toilets) and is easily accessible from the main Salalah – Mirbat road.

• During your visit, there’s a good chance you’ll share the Wadi with the camels and cows that make their way to Wadi Darbat each day to graze on the delicious green grass and foliage in the area. The birdlife is also fantastic so bring your binoculars.

Oman Adventure

Team Oman Air gets set for Europe The Oman Air sailing team heads into the concentrated European phase of the Extreme Sailing Series season confident they can lift their game to move up the leader board and challenge for the title. With four Acts down and four to go, the crew of the high-performance catamaran yacht have some great performances on their scorecard after intense four-day bursts of racing at venues in Muscat, Qingdao in China, the Madeira Islands, and Barcelona. After the relatively long breaks between the opening Extreme Sailing Series events, the Oman Air team and other crews face a quick-fire series of events which may well decide the outcome of the yearlong contest. “We have been competing at the top of the fleet the whole season and we

Oman Adventure are competitive, it is all down to very small marginal gains going forward,” said Oman Sail’s veteran tactician and mainsail trimmer Pete Greenhalgh. The established Oman Air crew of Greenhalgh, Omani bowman Nasser Al Mashari and regulars James Wierzbowski and Ed Smyth were joined at the beginning of the year by New Zealand match-racing star Phil Robertson. And while the new team made a great start and won the opening GC32 Championships, a pre-Extreme Series regatta, there is still some fine tuning to be done. A long-standing Extreme Sailing Series sailor, Al Mashari explained that, “We are looking to improve what is still a new team with Phil joining us at the start of the year. We still have things to work on overall, and we are looking forward to putting those in place and getting the results we feel we are capable of.” If one thing is for sure, the battle for first place over the remainder of the 2017 Extreme Sailing Series is going to be very intense.

Oman Heritage

Treasures from the National Museum: From utility to artistry The course of Oman’s craft history has been determined by the need for functional utility, as well as the need for self-expression through artistry and adornment. Here, the National Museum’s Director-General, Jamal al-Moosawi, as well as the Museum’s Head of Curatorial Unit, Moza al-Wardi, take us on a journey through this rich part of the Sultanate of Oman’s past. (With photography by Saleh al-Ruzaqi/The National Museum). Camel and goat milking baskets (karmah) Origin: Central Oman Materials: Desert palm and goat leather Period: 14th c AH/20th c CE

Utility is the context within which all of Oman’s craft industries have developed. Since the time of the first craftsmen, articles have been manufactured for a recognised purpose on the basis of perceived human needs, the most basic of which – food, water, shelter and safety – are coupled with an innate requirement for self-expression through personal adornment and artistry. It is the means by which such needs have been met, using the materials at hand, that has determined the course of Oman’s craft history. Successful craft skills, once attained, were faithfully passed down from father to son or mother to daughter, sometimes preserved unchanged for centuries, until the requirement for a particular skill or product altered, or until new materials or technologies became available. Fossilised woven palm basket Origin: Ra’s al-Hadd (South ash-Sharqiyah Governorate) Materials: Calcite (fossilised) Period: 3,100–2,700 BCE (Early Bronze Age) Description: Inside the houses of an Early Bronze Age settlement at Ra’s al-Hadd, archaeologists have discovered fossilised imprints of baskets, ropes and nets. The perishable organic materials originally used to produce these objects had been slowly replaced by concretions of calcium carbonate over thousands of years. This find has provided a rare glimpse of materials and techniques used in the local manufacture of such everyday craft objects in prehistoric times.

Landmark Travels

A royal adventure at Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of the United Kingdom’s sovereigns since 1837. While they’re still very much in use for official events and receptions held by The Queen, the State Rooms at the palace, which contain some of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection, are open to visitors right now, during the month of August, for the official ‘Annual Summer Opening’.

Buckingham Palace’s ‘State Rooms’ are the Palace rooms that were originally designed and built for the Royal Family to receive, reward and entertain their subjects and visiting dignitaries.

This tradition continues today as the State Rooms are still used extensively by the Queen and members of the Royal Family to receive and entertain their guests on state, ceremonial and official

38

Landmark Travels occasions. Many of the State Rooms also continue to have particular uses. The Throne Room, for example, is used by the Queen, on special occasions. If you happen to be visiting London at this time of year, while the Queen is away on her summer holidays, you absolutely shouldn’t miss out on Buckingham Palace and a tour of its State Rooms – as well as several other tours on offer. This is one of the truly iconic experiences of London travel and offers you a glimpse into one of the few remaining working royal palaces in the world today.

According to the Royal Collection Trust, the Palace’s nineteen State Rooms predominantly reflect the taste of George IV who reigned from 1820 until 1830, and who commissioned the transformation of what had previously been known as Buckingham House into a grand palace. Today these State Rooms are furnished with many of the greatest treasures and outstanding works of art and design from the Royal Collection – including paintings, sculpture, porcelain, and some of the finest English and French furniture in the world – and they provide a magnificent backdrop to the events that take place here, year after year. Visitor Information For its ‘Annual Summer Opening’, Buckingham Palace opens from 22 July to 1 October (Open daily from 09:30am – 7:30pm), and 1 September to 1 October (Open daily 09:30am – 6:30pm). There are a range of tours available, including guided tours, with varying prices for each one. (A typical visit lasts between 2 hours and 2 hours 30 minutes).
