Marhaba

It is a great pleasure to welcome you aboard your Oman Air flight today. Oman Air has begun 2017 on a very positive note. We are continuing our fleet expansion with THREE new additions already this year. The latest aircraft is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner which joined the fleet on 23rd February; this is in addition to the new 737-800 which was added to the fleet in January and a second new B737-800 which was added on 16th February. We are continuing to invest in providing guests with the best possible on-board experience; the Boeing 787 Dreamliner features a state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment system which allows access to a wide selection of on-demand entertainment delivered through a passenger experience interface developed specifically with Oman Air. As part of our ambitious and dynamic programme of network expansion, we will launch a new four times weekly flight from Muscat to the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, starting 27th March. We are committed to ensuring that our guests have greater choice and the opportunity to discover new destinations with Oman Air and we are delighted to be offering thousands more business and leisure travellers the opportunity to travel between Oman and Kenya (and beyond).

With an all-round high seat factor on many flights, the new flights are expected to do very well, prompting many tourists to visit magnificent Oman as well as India’s beautiful touristic spots. We have many more exciting plans in the pipeline for 2017 and we look forward to sharing these with you in the coming months. Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the achievement of women, in honour of International Women’s Day on 8th March. Women are a vital component of the working world. In Oman Air women play a crucial role as well, in almost all job categories. We will and must always appreciate their social, economic, cultural and political triumphs. We wish all women an extremely successful future. Many thanks for choosing to fly with us. We hope we will welcome you back soon.

Paul Gregorowitsch Chief Executive Officer

We are also growing our capacity to India and increasing our weekly frequencies from 126 to 161 flights between Oman and 11 destinations in India. India is a key destination for Oman Air; the demand for all 11 of our Indian destinations has always been high and the increased frequencies offer yet more choice and convenience to our guests. We first launched flights to India in the 1990s and the demand for seats has grown exponentially amongst both business and leisure travellers.

High octane adventure with Oman Air From the recent Al Mouj Muscat Marathon, to high-octane, multi-hull yacht racing planned for this year’s Extreme Sailing Series – Oman Air continues its sporting adventures in 2017 While Oman Air’s GC32 sailors on #TeamOmanAir prepare for the 2017 Extreme Sailing Series which kicks off in Muscat on 8th March this month, fans recently rallied in support of Oman Air’s newest sporting adventure – the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon.

February in the Sultanate’s Capital, and will continue into the 2017 Extreme Sailing Series’ curtain-raiser in Muscat that starts this month on 8th March – and where the team Oman Air’s crew will be hoping for a helping hand from a passionate Muscat crowd to give their 2017 campaign an early boost

Since it started in 2012, the Muscat Marathon has grown in popularity but this year, the Muscat Road Runners teamed up with seasoned sports event organisers Oman Sail to upscale the event into what is now the ‘Al Mouj Muscat Marathon’ as part of a plan to position it in the top league of international marathons.

For more info on the 2018 edition of the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon, visit www.muscatmarathon.om, and for updates on the 2017 Extreme Sailing Series go to www.extremesailingseries.com

Oman Air became one of the event’s first official partners offering airline ticket raffles and special offers which helped to boost entries to a record 1 300 runners from 74 nationalities (which was double the 2016 field!) across three events – the full marathon, half marathon and 10km run. The marathon event was won by Pierre Breuer who crossed the finish line 12 minutes ahead of the next placed runner. ‘This has been a fantastic event for everyone involved and we are very excited about its future,’ said Salma Al Hashmi, Oman Sail Chief Marketing Officer. ‘Oman’s winter climate is perfect for marathon running as our event in January showed, and we are hoping that more runners around the world will join the fun next year…’ But, Oman’s sporting odyssey shows no signs of letting up. The 7th edition of EFG Sailing Arabia: The Tour, which is billed as Arabia’s No.1 Offshore Race, started in Muscat on 14th February. The inaugural GC32 Sailing Championship also recently kicked off on 28th

Lamu Town: Lamu Town is the small, historic town on Lamu Island, which is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. Originally founded in the late 1300s it is Kenya’s oldest, continually inhabited town and now also a UNESCO World Heritage site. It also happens to be home to some very interesting historical buildings – including over 20 mosques. Tsavo National Park: Tsavo is another Kenyan classic. It has vast herds of elephant, as well as rhino, buffalo, lion, leopards, hippo, crocodile, and various antelope species. There’s also around 500 recorded species of birds here. Samburu National Reserve: Due to the Uaso Nyiro River running right through the reserve, Samburu tends to attract a massive diversity of wildlife, including large numbers of Nile crocodile that can be seen lazing around the river. Mount Kenya National Park: At 5 199 metres, Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in the county and the second-highest in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro. It contains a multitude of ridges and peaks, and although it straddles the equator, it is high enough to receive significant snowfall. The Mount Kenya National Park itself was established in 1949 to preserve its floral and animal life, which you can explore while trekking along the mountain’s lower slopes, or up to the popular Point Lenana peak. (The main summits are the Batian and Nelion peaks, which can only be accessed by means of technical climbing via a variety of rock or ice routes).

They can be found in many of the local markets and curio stores around the country.

Amal Al Raisi: Oman’s fashion design success story Under the name of Dar Al Aseel, Oman’s Amal Al Raisi designs traditional Omani dresses, as well as abayas and jalabiyas. She is one of Oman’s true fashion design success stories, and will be one of the highlight speakers for the Condé Nast International Luxury Conference 2017. Wings of Oman recently spoke to Amal to find out more about her latest work… The Condé Nast International Luxury Conference 2017 goes ahead under a broad theme of 'Mindful Luxury'. It would interesting to hear your thoughts on the concept of 'luxury' and how you relate to it in your work? To me luxury is a dream! The story of the success of the French fashion designer Coco Chanel is always a source of inspiration to me. For my own work, I relate to luxury in that I strive to offer the very best – the ‘ultimate’ – of what I can to my clients. This can mean spending many extra hours on a piece for the woman wearing it, just to ensure she feels special; or adding my signature detail to a piece, to help separate it from other brands… You have just successfully launched your SpringSummer 2017 range – do you have any more projects lined up for this year? Currently, I’m working on my new Autumn-Winter 2017 collection for my RTW and Classic lines. Also, I have been invited to receive exclusive training with Kopenhagen Fur, the world’s largest fur house. This season, I was inspired by Oman’s architecture and how for many centuries due to its strategic position on the trade routes for frankincense, myrrh and other goods, the country was influenced by Indian, East African, Portuguese and British cultures. The Omani architects of the time used these influences as a source of inspiration, and created their own distinct architecture that differs greatly from the rest of the Arabian Peninsula.

Oman is a nation that prides itself on ‘looking good’, and the Omani people have a rich history of design, craft, and art. What advice and guidance do you have for young, upand-coming designers in Oman, who are keen to be involved in and successful in the fashion industry? Oman’s rich history allows for lots of inspiration. For me, as an Omani designer I want the world to see just what is so special about my beautiful country. To up-and-coming designers Amal Al Raisi in Oman I challenge them to concentrate on their goals, draw their plans out, and to manage their expectations of what the fashion industry really is all about. It’s a lot of hard work, and for this reason, they should concentrate on exactly what it is they want to create – and then be sure to target the right audience. Golden Triangle: The classic introduction to India India’s Golden Triangle is the triangular tourist path that will take you to three of the country’s richest cultural destinations at Delhi, Agra and Jaipur – including the legendary Taj Mahal. The journey makes for a classic introduction to India. If you’re struggling to decide just exactly how and where to travel around this continent-like country, with its massive array of places to see and explore, the Golden Triangle is a great start. The triangular route is made up of three of India’s most famous and fascinating cities – Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Here’s what you can expect at each destination…

Agra No trip to India is complete without at least one visit to the Taj Mahal, and this is the reason you come to Agra. The structure itself is an immense mausoleum of white marble, built between 1631 and 1648 by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife. It is one of the most well preserved and architecturally beautiful tombs in the world, and a masterpieces of Indian Islamic architecture. Besides the Taj, Agra has two other UNESCO World Heritage sites which are well worth exploring – Agra Fort, and the historic city of Fatehpur Sikrinearby. When you’re in Agra, don’t miss out on an Agra Food Tour, which is an excellent way to taste Agra’s delicious cuisine.

Delhi ‘A symbol of the country’s rich past and thriving present, Delhi is a city where ancient and modern blend seamlessly together. It is a place that not only touches your pulse, but makes it beat at a frenetic speed!’ explains an official Delhi Tourism guide. Delhi’s famous Red fort, which was the main residence of the Mughal dynasty emperors for nearly 200 years until 1857, is the number one attraction here. There’s also the magnificent Humayun's Tomb, the India Gate monument, the Jama Masjid, which is the largest mosque in India, and the wonderfully preserved, 72.5 metre high Qutub Minar which, the story goes, was the tallest ‘skyscraper’ in the world after the final additions were added to the tower structure in the early 1200s.

‘If you’re struggling to decide just exactly how and where to travel around this continent-like country, the Golden Triangle is a great start’

24

Family Traveller Jaipur India’s great old city of Jaipur is a beautifully chaotic, charismatic mix of sights, scents, tastes, and textures. It’s also home to an endless array of historic forts, temples, and palaces – like the exquisite Amber Fort and Palace, City Palace, and ‘Hawa Mahal’ Palace of the Winds. But perhaps the number one reason you travel to Jaipur is to explore the city’s legendary bazaars, which house hundreds of vendors and shopkeepers selling precious gemstones, silver jewellery, bangles, textiles, pottery, leather sandals, and much, much more. Also, if you have the time and budget for it, you absolutely should not miss out on a hot air balloon safari over Jaipur with operators like Sky Waltz Balloon Safaris.

Ocean Explorers: From Sindbad to Marco Polo The Arab World Institute in Paris, France, recently organised an exposition called ‘Ocean Explorers: From Sindbad to Marco Polo,’ from 24th November 2016 to 26th February 2017. One of the highlights of the exposition included a showcase of the Sultanate of Oman’s rich and fascinating maritime history in the Indian Ocean – together with a display of a magnificent wooden Omani dhow named ‘Nizwa’, outside the Institute’s building. The convenient geographical location of the Sultanate of Oman and it’s accessibility to early Indian Ocean traders; as well as the many sheltered moorings along it’s coastline for mariners; and the fact that the region’s annual monsoon winds shortened sailing times and put Omani sailors much closer to people living on African, Indian and Chinese shores; all enabled the Sultanate, over thousands of years, to develop itself into a great maritime nation.

building (and which was originally bought by a Frenchman in the Willayat of Sur in Oman). Ocean Explorers: From Sindbad to Marco Polo was also a showcase of the ancient maritime history of the Arab world, and this included information the Sultanate of Oman’s famous ‘Jewel of Muscat’ boat that sailed from Muscat to Singapore on 16th February 2010, and which passed through the maritime routes that were used by Omani sailors since the 1200s, along the way.

These factors also enabled Oman to develop a flourishing trade and an open-mindedness and tolerance towards mariners, merchants, and people from many other Indian Ocean nations, and the rest of the world.

The discussions during the seminar – Oman and maritime navigation in the Indian Ocean – were held concurrently with the exhibition at the headquarters of the Arab World Institute in Paris on 20th January, and were focused on how the Omani sailors of old proved their merits in challenging sea conditions, and how relations were established by Omani sailors with European fleets and sailors. These discussions also shed light on the famous Omani sailors, such as the legendary Ahmed bin Majid, who played an effective role in the development of navigation in the Indian Ocean.

So, with the Arab World Institute recently organising the exposition ‘Ocean Explorers: From Sindbad to Marco Polo,’ it was very appropriate that the Sultanate of Oman was also involved – due to its rich and fascinating maritime history. Indeed, one of the highlights of the exhibition for visitors was a traditional wooden Omani dhow named ‘Nizwa’, which was put on display outside the exhibition

Oman Heritage

Treasures from the National Museum: The oldest coin in Oman Looking at currency in Oman from the earliest coins to what are the latest digital technology currencies gives us a unique insight into Oman’s changing relationship with the wider world, and the shaping of its national identity. Here, the National Museum’s Director-General, Jamal al-Moosawi, as well as the Museum’s Head of Curatorial Unit, Moza al-Wardi, take us on a journey through Oman’s coin history and heritage, and offer a look at what is the Sultanate of Oman’s oldest coin. The history of money in Oman covers a period of almost 2300 years. Most of the currency displayed in the Sultanate was made elsewhere but found its way to Oman through trade and exchange. Many of the coins were part of hoards hidden hundreds of years ago and were never recovered by their original owners.

The below coin is a tetradrachm of Abi'el-type, and is the oldest known coin struck in Oman. A schematised portrait of Alexander III of Macedonia, commonly known as Alexander the Great (r 336–323 BCE) appears on the coin’s obverse (front), with the ‘Amun horns’ formed by a plain crescent and the ‘lion mane hair’ as a simple fishbone pattern. A seated deity and an ‘Aramaic’ legend appears on the coin’s reverse (back). The legend translates as ‘my father is God’ – thus emphasising the divine origins of Alexander in the eyes of his subjects.

The Macedonians were the first to introduce currency into the Oman Peninsula back in the 4th century BCE. The earliest coins displayed in the National Museum were minted in Oman during the Late Iron Age before the arrival of Islam. The most recent items relate to digital transactions and pose questions about the future of physical money.

Landmark Travels

Alborz Mountains: High elevation adventure in Iran Iran’s magnificent Alborz Mountains extend for around 1 500 kilometres in an east to west direction across the northern part of the country. They include the over 5 600 metre high Mount Damavand – the highest peak in the Middle East – and for travellers, the Alborz range presents an opportunity for unforgettable, high-elevation adventures. Trek through the Alborz foothills: One of Iran’s greatest attractions is its massive diversity of natural terrain. Luckily, travellers can easily get a taste of it just outside Tehran. From Darakeh and Darband, which are on the outskirts of the city, there are dozens of wellestablished walking and trekking routes that track their way through the beautiful natural scenery of the lower slopes and foothills of the mountains. Many of these can be completed in a morning or afternoon, and will take you past waterfalls and streams, natural forests, and up some spectacular rocky crags. Along the way, you can also stop for a snack at one of the area’s traditional tea-houses.

Of course, Iran’s sprawling capital city of Tehran is itself at the foot of the central Alborz Mountains, and it is from here that you can easily access and explore some of the best of the Alborz range. Here are some ideas for some high elevation adventures in and around Tehran… Go skiing at Shemshak and Dizin: Two of the Alborz’s biggest ski resorts – Shemshak Ski Resort and Dizin Ski Resort – are a scenic one to two-hour journey north of Tehran. Shemshak is the closer of the two and its steep slopes are considered more appropriate for expert skiers and snowboarders. Dizin is larger and has more facilities, and better for beginners. Iran’s ski season starts from November and lasts until May, and at Shemshak and Dizin, as well as other places, there are chalets and hotels for accommodation, and equipment (and skiing instructors) for hire.

Landmark Travels

Climb Mount Damavand: Climbing and trekking experts say that Mount Damavand is one of the most easily accessible ‘big mountains’ of the world, and a summit of the 5 671 metre high peak can be done in as little as five days. Treks and climbs of varying difficulty can be organised through several wellestablished guiding companies based in Iran and Tehran. Explore Lar National Park on two wheels: Iran’s Lar National Park is around 130 kilometres north of Tehran, in the heart of Alborz mountain territory. For mountainbikers it’s a dream destination, and with adventure guide operators like Iran Eco Adventure, you can arrange multiple-day riding adventures to explore its magnificent floral and animal life, and spectacular natural terrain.

As travelling to Iran is currently becoming more of a reality for tourists from all parts of the world, many are waking up to the fact that Iran – with its capital Tehran, and other destinations like Mashhad, Isfahan, and Shiraz – is a true traveller’s paradise. Among many other things, Iran offers spectacular architecture all around the country, a rich history of art, craft, and design, countless relics of Iran’s ancient culture, and an incredibly diverse landscape that includes mountains and snow, deserts, a coastline and offshore islands, and a very rich floral and animal kingdom. There’s also delicious cuisine to be enjoyed, and some very friendly people to be met while you’re exploring.

Oman Culture

Sultan Qaboos Awards for Culture, Arts and Literature The sixth edition of the Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Literature celebrate the work of Arab intellectuals, and ensure the continuity of the cultural movements that have been created in various intellectual and humanitarian fields. stories, contemporary thought, music, Arab poetry, educational studies, photography, theatre writing, studies in the field of Arabic language, calligraphy, children's literature, translation and Omani folklore.

The aim of the Sultan Qaboos Awards is to showcase and celebrate Arab achievements within the three broad areas of culture, art and literature – whether this be for the actual productions and publications being created in these areas, or for the individuals themselves who play a key role in the cultural, artistic and literary landscape of the Arab world. Furthermore, the Awards are also a tribute to these culture, art, and intellectual personalities, for what they have introduced and achieved during their lives, and for how they have enriched humanity.

More than 1 300 individuals, and intellectual and artistic works have been showcased for the Awards. Fifteen were selected, including six Arab figures who received the Sultan Qaboos Medal for Culture, Science and Arts and Literature – while nine Omanis received the Order of Merit for Culture, Science, Arts and Literature. The prize is awarded annually and overseen by the Sultan Qaboos Supreme Centre for Culture and Science. (The prize is awarded alternatively to Arab participants in one year, followed by Omani nationals in the second year).

Over the last five annual editions, after they were originally launched in 2012, the Awards have focused on fifteen different areas, including historical studies, painting, oil painting, short

Oman Culture 2016 Awards…

Dr. Mohammed Shaheen, another one of the members of the jury, explained, ‘The book presents simple rules that underlie the confusion and chaos, similar to the laws of physics and astronomy, which have been rejected one day and then became clear, acceptable and normal, later on. The book in general summarised the present situation of science towards theory, explaining that there is no contradiction between science and religion as indicated in the introduction of the valued translation, as the theory of evolution which, as asserted in the book, contributed to many scientific achievements, especially since human knowledge was able to deeply link biological phenomena, which seems incoherent at the first glance, and later shows that they belong to a complete theory. In short, the book Endless Forms Most Beautiful includes soft knowledge and the pleasure of reading on one hand, and the latest perception of the world on the other hand. In an easy and soft Arabic language, the translation was able to convey to us ideas that were not easy to comprehend.’

The 5th edition of the Awards, which were dedicated to Omani nationals, took place in 2016 and were made up of three categories, namely the ‘Translation for Culture’, ‘Omani Folklore for Arts’, and ‘Literature Novels’. After the nominations for the Awards were announced on 20th March 2016 through various media, and after initial screening and assessment committees were allocated for each field, one winner was finally honoured in each of these categories. ‘Translation for Culture’ category For the ‘Translation for Culture Branch’ award, the initial screening committee for this category was comprised of a number of academic translators, and they received 12 translation works in both English to Arabic, and Arabic to English. Added to this was the jury, which consisted of a number of academics specialising in the field of translation, including H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Nasser Al Harrasi, Chairman of the General Authority for Radio and Television from Oman, Dr. Mohamed Youssef Chahine, emeritus professor at the University of Jordan, and Dr. Siddeek Mohamed Djohar, head of English literature at the University of The United Arab Emirates.

‘Omani Folklore for Arts’ category A group of specialists were put together for the initial screening committee of the ‘Omani Folklore for Arts’ category award. This committee then selected 17 artistic works performed by 17 Omani traditional troupes, and these works ranged between Alaazi, Alrazha, Alrasvah, and Alhboot.

The translator Hamad bin Sinan Al-Ghaithi won the award for his Arabic translation of the book ‘Endless Forms Most Beautiful’, which was originally written by the American professor Sean Carroll. The jury concluded that the book is of paramount importance, as the Arab library lacks works in the field of evolutionary growth, or ‘Evo Devo’, as the book discusses.

Five troupes were qualified for evaluation by the final jury, which was comprised of the poet, writer and performer of Omani folklore arts, Sheikh Mohammad bin Hamad Almasrori, as well as the poet and writer H.E. Sheikh Ali Bin Ahmed Al Shamsi, and Mohammed bin Ali Al-Ghazali, a poet and performer of Omani folklore art in Oman. This committee awarded the Bashaer Al Kheir troupe, who come from Oan’s coastal town of Sur, for the Alazi and Raszha arts prize.

In spite of the idiomatic, linguistic and synthetic challenges involved in translating the text of the book, the jury agreed that Hamad bin Sinan Al-Ghaithi had made considerable effort on several levels with regards to the moral, linguistic and idiomatic translations of the work – all of which required a high degree of knowledge and analytical skill – as well as what was a significant effort to translate the footnotes, references and data in the book.

35

Oman Culture The Muhammad al-Ghazali explained that, ‘The works of these qualified troupes were reviewed based on a set of standards for arbitration by giving marks or grades for elements, in accordance with the vision of the members of the committee. These criteria included the overall performance of the troupe, consistency of moving individually and collectively, music performance, texts and quality of words and poems during the troupe performance, as well as the technical performance and CV of the troupes. ‘Literature Novels’ category For the ‘Literature Novels’ category, the concerned screening committee received 32 novels of which 21 were ruled out because they did not meet the requirements of the arts award. Therefore a total of 11 novels were selected to compete for the Merit of Culture, Science, Arts and Literature award. The jury committee was comprised of the Tunisian Prof. Dr. Mohammed Bin Ibrahim Al Qadi, and the Jordanian academic, critic, writer and translator Fakhri Saleh, as well as the Saudi novelist and literary critic Abdo Khal, and together they unanimously awarded the novel ‘Narenjah’ by Dr. Joukha bint Mohammed Al-Harthiya, as the winner. The novel makes use of multiple narratives and various characters that at first seem far apart, but are ultimately linked via a solid, but invisible thread that keeps everything together. Thanks to subtle narration and glowing language, the story becomes a deep and captivating aesthetic unit while it explores various entities – east and west, past and present, outward and inward – which all give clear expression to its Arab and international heritage. Prof. Mohammed explained that, ‘At a jury committee we noticed a number of promising texts which have a valid basis for successful novels. These dealt with themes such as the conflict between the ancient and the modern in the mutant community, or engraving deeply into the popular memory and benefiting from the accumulated experience, or dealing with present political and social issues, or dealing with the psychological and women world in particular, or dealing with love and money issues in a changing society, or referring to some of the social and psychological phenomena, including what tends to imagine to describe the status of women in the society, and some are dealing with conflict and disparity issues between East and west.’ Post-awards, and looking ahead… Currently, the authorities of the Sultan Qaboos Awards for Culture, Arts and Literature are printing a set of awardwinning works from previous sessions, which will be used to promote the prize winners and their work to various cultural, artistic and literary circles. Looking ahead to the sixth edition of the Sultan Qaboos Awards, which will exclusively showcase the work of Arab individuals, the organisation’s authorities have announced that the categories will include ‘Economic Studies for Culture’, ‘Architectural Design for Arts’, and ‘Literary Criticism for Literature’.
