Marhaba
It is a great pleasure to welcome you aboard your Oman Air flight today.
look forward to welcoming this unique event, which brings together top-level attendees from the luxury and fashion industries.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy New Year. I hope that 2017 will be a fruitful, happy and peaceful year for you all.
Adding to the happiness quotient, Oman Air has recently gained two new additions to its growing list of international awards - winning the Foreign Airline of the Year by Sector to Middle East at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Awards 2015. For the third year running, we have also been awarded "World's Leading Airline Economy Class" at the World Travel Awards.
Oman Air concluded 2016 on a very positive note. The initiatives taken by Oman Air to cope with the economic downturn in the region have been successful and no compromise will be made to our growth strategy. During the last year, Oman Air had contributed over a billion Omani Rial to the National Economy by creating business opportunities, careers for professionals and support to tourism. As one of the objectives of the Government is to diversify, Oman Air will further contribute to the development of the logistics and tourism sectors. It is wonderful to see our livery in brand new destinations this year. We successfully launched a new route to Guangzhou, China last month. We are sure this will open up easy access to Oman Air's outstanding range of networks for customers from China as well as helping to strengthen political, economic and social links between Oman and China.
We have many more exciting plans in the pipeline for 2017 and we look forward to sharing these with you in the coming months. In the meantime, I hope you relax and enjoy our fabulous inflight service. Many thanks for choosing to fly with us. We hope we will welcome you back soon.

2017 will also see Oman Air unfurl new destinations including Manchester and Nairobi. Must See Oman
Bandar Al Kharayn
Latitude: 23° 30' 5" N Longitude: 58° 44' 3" E
The waterways and rocky headlands that make up Bandar Al Kharayn are a paradise for boaters. For those travelling here by road, there are also spectacular spots overlooking the Sea of Oman that are perfect for a picnic or sundowners. By boat or by car, Bandar Al Kharayn is an absolute must-see spot in Oman. 1. Boat or car? Bandar Al Kharayn is a 45 minute drive by road from Muscat, and an easy 30 minute trip by boat from the popular Marina Al Bandar, just south of Muscat. You’re guaranteed a great day out, either way…
7. Another increasingly popular, perhaps more extreme adventure activity at Bandar Al Kharayn is ‘deep water soloing’ – a type of rock-climbing that relies on deep water at the base of a climb to protect you if you fall. There are several excellent deep water soloing spots in the area, which can be explored with experienced local guides.
2. Schools of dolphins? Take one of the several dolphin watching or marine safari-style boat trips that leave from the Marina Al Bandar, and there’s a good chance you’ll see these magnificent ocean creatures.
8. Travelling by car from Muscat? About 500 metres before reaching the village of Bandar Al Kharayn itself, you can take a left turn and drive a couple of kilometres up to a lookout point with spectacular ocean views.
3. Travelling by boat to Bandar Al Kharayn, you’ll ride past the gigantic sea arch eroded into the sea-cliffs just offshore of the famous Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa.
9. About 15 kilometres south of Bandar Al Kharayn, is the popular Al Sifah beach, with its long, sandy shoreline, as well as the nearby Sifawy Boutique Hotel.
4. By car, the trip to Bandar Al Kharayn gives you magnificent views of the distant peaks of the southern Al Hajar Mountain Range, as well as the mangrove-lined waterways in the area.
10. Spending the day on a boat, anchored in one of Bandar Al Kharayn’s sheltered bays, is an experience not to be missed. Don’t miss out. And don’t forget your camera either – the seascapes and sunsets are spectacular!
5. Bandar Al Kharayn is an eco-adventurer’s playground. Besides spectacular views of the ocean, rocky coastline, and the Al Hajar Mountains in the distance, the area is also a hotspot for sea-kayaking, snorkelling and SCUBA diving, wakeboarding, jetskiing, fishing and birdwatching.
Visit Bandar Al Kharayn Bander Al Kharayn’s many small bays, inlets and beaches can easily be accessed via boat from places like Marina Al Bandar, which is just south of Muscat. Travelling by car, you can also take a drive to Qantab, just south of Muscat, and then along the Yitti-Al Sifa road through to Bandar Al Kharayn.
6. For SCUBA divers, there are several world-class dive spots to explore in Bandar Al Kharayn’s crystal-clear waters, as well as the 84 metre-long Al Munassir shipwreck, which was purposefully sunk for divers in 2003.

luxury destination, as a number of 5-star hotels have been built here for you and your family to indulge in and enjoy! England: London – World Capital of Museums? Some of the latest studies done on travel trends point to the fact that museums and art galleries are more popular than ever before with travellers. With this in mind, London could easily lay a legitimate claim to the title ‘World’s Capital of Museums’ if there ever was such a thing. This is due to the sheer number and quality of museums and galleries on offer – and also due to the fact that many of them are free to enter. The British Museum, the Museum of London, National Portrait Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum, and Science Museum are the classics.
China: ‘Bleisure’ trip to Guangzhou There are enough travel attractions in Guangzhou to keep you busy for months. You can eat exotic, delicious Cantonese cuisine, take the kids to the gigantic Chimelong Paradise amusement park, go on a slow, lazy cruise down the Pearl River, climb the 595.7 metre high Canton Tower, visit the magnificent Temple of Six Banyan Trees, and much more. But in 2017, entrepreneurs and business travellers can also turn their Guangzhou adventure into a ‘Bleisure’ trip – a predicted tourism trend for the year ahead that combines ‘Business’ as well as ‘Leisure’ travel – and visit the Canton Fair 2017. This legendary import and export trade fair – billed as the largest in China – has been taking place in Guangzhou since 1957 (twice every year – during spring and autumn), and is where you need to be if you are keen to develop the business relationships needed to succeed in China.

Day adventures out of Muscat... Here’s a selection of unmissable travel adventures out of Muscat that can easily be done in a day… Wadi Shab: Besides being one of the most accessible wadis in Oman, Wadi Shab, which is around 150 kilomteres by road from the capital, is also one of the most spectacular. To begin your adventure in this giant gorge, you’ll have to take a boat across a small waterway. From here on, you’ll have hundreds of metres of rocky footpaths, local village plantations, and sandy river beds to explore. One of the main attractions are the rock pools, waterfalls, and secluded caves (which include some spectacular swim-throughs) at the upper end of the gorge. Wadi Shab is also the perfect place for a family picnic.
Al Hoota Cave: The magnificent Al Hoota Cave system makes for an underground adventure of a lifetime in Oman. It is just over a two hour’s drive from Muscat, and located in mountainous terrain, right next to the Sultanate of Oman’s famous Jebel Shams peak. (In fact, one of the highlights of any Al Hoota Caves adventure, is the drive out here). All explorations of the cave are done with local guides, and begin with a ride on board an electric train to the entrance, followed by a ±45 minute tour of the depths of the cave, the underground lakes, and also the many magnificent ‘stalactite’ and ‘stalagmite’ formations.
Bimmah Sinkhole: A refreshing splash in the crystal clear waters of Bimmah Sinkhole is something not to be missed. The sinkhole, which was formed due to natural erosion and the collapse of a giant underground cave, is just over an hour’s drive from Muscat, and is a popular weekend spot for locals and foreign travellers. Visitors that are feeling brave can take a leap from the top edge of the sinkhole into the pool of water below. The less brave can relax, dip their feet in the water, and let the tiny fish that inhabit the pool nibble away on their feet for a natural skin cleansing treatment!
Nizwa Fort: The most prominent feature in the design of Nizwa Fort is it’s over 20 metre high main tower, from where you’ll have spectacular views of the surrounding town, mountains and date plantations. The entire fort is a masterpiece of early Oman military engineering, and its design includes several architectural features

Check In Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve: Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve is the home of one of the Indian Ocean’s largest nesting areas for the endangered Green Turtle. During the summer months, an estimated 20 000 to 30 000 female turtles come to nest and lay their eggs at Ras Al Jinz and the beaches in the area. After these eggs begin to hatch, visitors can observe the turtle hatchlings crawling their way into the sea to start their new lives. (Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve is located just south of Sur, and is around a three hour journey from Muscat). Misfat Village (Misfat Al Abriyeen): Historians say the village first began developing into a settlement around 400 years ago. These days, a visit to the village of Misfat Al Abriyeen, which has its origins going back around 400 years, is like a trip back in time. This is because many of the buildings in the village, which can still
Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve
be seen today, were built on solid rock, and constructed using traditional materials like stone, mud, and date palm fronds. The terraces and plantations on the terraces below the village are also a beautiful relic of the past – and are filled with lush green vegetation, plantations of date palms, bananas, pomegranates, and papayas, and all watered by a set of traditional falaj irrigation canals. (The village lies a short journey away from Nizwa, and around two and a half hours by car from Muscat).

Today, Neuschwanstein, the ‘Castle of the Fairy Tale King’ – King Ludwig II – is one of the most popular in Europe, and dream destination for travellers. The setting of Neuschwanstein Castle could not be more idyllic. The snowy peaks of the Bavarian Alps in the distance; views of the lush green valleys, and villages below the castle; the rich greens of the surrounding forests; and the eccentric, Romantic-style architecture of Neuschwanstein Castle itself all make the place a dream come true for travellers. The story goes that the castle was a creation of Germany’s King Ludwig II – the so-called ‘Fairy Tale King’ – who ruled the Bavaria region of the country until his death in 1886. After succeeding the throne at age eighteen, and after losing a war fought alongside Austria

Landmark Travels against the historic state of Prussia, Ludwig increasingly withdrew from his day-to-day responsibilities as king, in favour of extravagant artistic and architectural projects, one of which was the lavish Neuschwanstein Castle. Built on a rugged hill against a backdrop of picturesque mountain scenery, Ludwig wanted to rebuild an existing ruin ‘in the authentic style of the old German knights’ castles’, as Ludwig once described his intention in a letter to a friend. As the official Neuschwanstein Castle visitor’s guide explains, ‘The castle was not designed for royal representation, but as a place of retreat. Here Ludwig II escaped into a dream world – the poetic world of the Middle Ages.’ However, the castle was not built as rapidly as the king expected. The project was too comprehensive and the building site on the mountain presented difficulties. Also, the impossible deadlines set out by Ludwig meant that the architects, artisans, and decorators implementing his detailed ideas struggled to finish the work on time – even though they often worked throughout the day and night. After work began on the site in the summer of 1868, the topping out ceremony of the castle only took place in January 1880. However, the final decoration and technical fittings of the interior were only completed in mid1884, and even these did not have the final details in place. This meant that while Ludwig had for years used the upper floor as provisional accommodation when he visited the site, he only ever saw his new castle as a building site, as he passed away unexpectedly in 1886 before Neuschwanstein could be completed and furnished in its entirety – as we now know it today. Neuschwanstein now attracts well over a million visitors every year who are keen to see and explore one of Germany’s most interesting and beautiful landmarks. If you’re travelling to Munich or around the Bavaria region of Germany, don’t miss out on the magnificent ‘Castle of the Fairy Tale King’…

Team Oman Air among the fittest athletes in the world!
Over the past ten years, free weights, strength and resistance training have all become common parlance among elite sailors, in particular, among professionals such as Oman Sail’s GC32 crew on Team Oman Air, who are obsessed with sporting success. With the new high performance boats, the fitter you are the quicker you sail and Team Oman Air’s dominance of the leaderboard in the 2016 Extreme Sailing Series suggests a crew who go the extra mile time and again to stay ahead of the game.
turbo engines. They are regarded as the fittest sailors on the Extreme Sailing Series circuit able to maintain astounding work rates through 10 races each day over four consecutive days. Wierzbowski is a keen advocate of CrossFit training which involves high intensity swimming, weightlifting, gymnastics and rowing workouts lasting between five and 40 minutes. This enables him to push through physical pain and build mental toughness. You can’t just stop, he says. You have to be ready to push harder and harder.
Every day, the five members of the team, including skipper Morgan Larson, spend hours in the gym building muscle and strength so that when the wind gets up on the race track sending boat speed and heart rates soaring, their performance levels never dip below 100%. Roughly speaking, they burn 1000 calories per hour racing a GC32 with power output around 280 watts through the winch when grinding in a sail.
In a breeze, the activity on a GC32 can best be described as explosive. Incredible loads of a tonne or more, requiring lightning quick reactions to keep the boats moving fast, make for some high octane, thrilling action but such is the intensity that one tiny mistake and an entire campaign could fail in a flash.
Cycling fast uphill for 20 minutes at maximum capacity would see an equivalent power output which explains why Peter Greenhalgh, Oman Air’s mainsheet trimmer and tactician has not one, but two personal trainers and works for 90 minutes every day on building up his shoulder, leg and arm muscles. ‘You need to be very strong to race these boats and it is noticeable in a windy event when someone takes their foot off the gas. It seriously impacts our performance,’ he says.
Since January last year, when the 2016 season kicked off in Muscat, Team Oman Air have won three Acts of the seven completed, including victory in front of a home crowd at Al Mouj followed by back to back wins in Cardiff and Hamburg.

The Earliest Musical Instrument in Oman: Musical shell instrument (jam /yam) Region: Ra’s al-Hamra (Muscat Governorate) Material: Shell Period: 5,000 – 4,000 BCE (Late Stone Age)
Treasures from the National Museum: Omani Music Music and musical instruments play an important role in Oman’s rich history. Here, the National Museum’s Acting Director-General, Jamal al-Moosawi, as well as the Museum’s Head of Curatorial Unit, Moza alWardi, take us on a journey through Oman’s musical past. (With photography by Saleh al-Ruzaqi). Omani music can be defined as the theoretical, practical, oral and written musical experience as practiced by Omani people within the geographical boundaries of the Sultanate of Oman. Omani music is related to both traditional and contemporary culture. It is part of the society’s collective body of knowledge and embodies the artistic and aesthetic perceptions of the Omani people. The character of Omani music is expressed in its genres, patterns, tunes, lyrics and musical instruments, in its relation to culture and social traditions, and in the different styles of playing music, dancing and singing.

Oman Heritage Among all the large shells uncovered over the grave coverings at the Ra's al-Hamra archaeological site in the Muscat Governorate, there were a few that were appropriately perforated on the spiral zone in order to be used as a horn or trumpet. They were blown on occasion of funeral ceremonies and then abandoned on the grave afterwards. There is substantial ethnographical documentation, from the Mediterranean to the Polynesian contexts, of large gastropod shells having been pierced and employed as trumpets in funerary rites.
The Omani music experience includes both traditional and 'ūdīyah music, encompassing artistic heritage, contemporary individual and collective experiences, and cultural or popular commercial orientations. It also expresses Oman’s social, cultural and historical connections within the Arab, African and Asian geographical environments. These connections are evident in the instruments used, in the musical genres and the ways they are performed, and in the cultural and religious influences which have acted upon them. Omani and Asian musical elements are intertwined in the towns and villages of the northern coast from Muscat to Musandam. African artistic elements are most apparent along the portion of the coast that extends from Muscat to Dhofar.
Description: A traditional trumpet consisting of a large spiral sea shell (conch) with a hole made at the upper end for blowing into. The jam is the oldest known musical instrument in Oman. A 7,000 year-old instrument was discovered in the Ra's al-Hamra archaeological site in Muscat Governorate. Method: The player blows into the hole, producing a single tone only. Thus, it is used mainly for rhythmic purposes.
Statistically speaking, local Arab artistic elements, musical genres and instruments are the most common constituents of Omani music. Some of these constituents are also part of the musical experience in other Arab countries of the Arabian Peninsula, especially in Yemen and the Arabian Gulf.
Use and distribution: Owing to its marine origin, the jam is well known in most coastal towns and villages of Oman. Its many traditional uses include the lēwa, sawt azzunūj, maidān, shūbāni and midīmah genres.
Name: Jam (var. yam) Classification: Horn family Type: Wind instrument
