easy access to Oman Air’s outstanding range of choices. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased via www.omanair.com. We will also soon be offering increased frequencies on some of our established long haul destinations. This winter we will increase the number of services we offer to Jakarta from four flights per week to one flight a day. And in Europe, we will be offering daily flights to Paris, instead of six per week, and six flights per week to Zurich, instead of the current five. So, Oman Air continues to reach for the skies. Please allow me, on behalf also of my dedicated colleagues, to thank you for choosing to fly with us. We all wish you a relaxing and enjoyable flight. It is a great pleasure to welcome you aboard your Oman Air flight. As the national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman, a key part of Oman Air’s mission is to enable travellers to discover our nation’s awe-inspiring beauty and time-honoured traditions. The Ministry of Tourism’s latest estimates of 40 per cent year-on-year growth in the number of visitors to Salalah this year, is in this respect, very good news. Over the last few months, the annual Khareef has drawn tourists from around the world to Salalah to experience the cooling mists and rains, which transform the desert landscapes into a lush, green environment. Some visitors travel by road with their own vehicles and buses, but many others fly with Oman Air. Which is why we are offering 317 600 seats to Salalah during this year’s Khareef – 23 000 more seats than in 2015. Furthermore, to cater for the heavy demand, we have even deployed wide body aircraft on our Salalah services.
With respectful regards,
Paul Gregorowitsch Chief Executive Officer

Both are now in service and flying to destinations in the Middle East and Asia. I am delighted to announce that, from this month, one of those Middle East destinations will be Najaf, in Iraq. Must See Oman
Sharqiya Sands
Latitude: 22° 9’ 44” N Longitude: 58° 41’ 8” E
An evening spent next to the flickering glow of a campfire, under the desert night stars, sipping Omani ‘Kahwa’ coffee prepared on the coals, followed by a night spent in a Bedouin-styled camp – this is the classic Sultanate of Oman desert experience. One of the most magnificent places to experience it all is at Oman’s famous Sharqiya Sands. 1. Probably the most fascinating thing about the Sharqiya Sands region is that you get a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle and cultural ways of the local Bedouin tribes, who continue to live the traditional nomadic lifestyle just as they have done for hundreds of years.
7. For accommodation, there are a number of excellent options available – from simple, rustic-style Bedouin desert camps, through to high-end, luxury retreats. 8. Most of these lodges and camps can arrange a selection of daytime adventure activities for you – like four-wheeldrive tours, camel safaris, quad-biking, sandboarding, and trekking.
2. It’s an absolutely beautiful place too. Travellers arriving in the dunes for the first time are presented with a pictureperfect desert landscape. There are a seemingly endless number of giant sand dunes here – some of which reach up to a height of 100 metres, and which are all constantly being shaped into linear formations by the wind.
9. If you don’t have time to spend the night, several tour operators based in Muscat and in the Sharqiya Sands region itself offer guided day trips (or half-day trips) through the Sharqiya Sands.
3. Throughout the day, the sandy landscape constantly changes into different shades of yellow, brown, and gold, as it is exposed to the sunlight in the morning, afternoon and evening.
10. The ‘Wahiba Challenge’ is a popular desert crossing style event organised every year where a bunch of four-wheel-drive and off-road bike enthusiasts travel from a designated point on the margin of the desert, another pre-determined campsite on the first day of the Challenge, and then from this campsite to the pre-defined point on the opposite side of the desert on the second and final day.
4. In total, the desert dunes and sandy terrain of Sharqiya cover an area of around 12 500 square kilometres – which is all located around the eastern-most region of the country. The desert stretches for around 180 kilometres in a north to south direction, and around 80 kilometres from east to west.
Sharqiya Sands: Getting there… The town of Bidiyyah, which is around a two-andhalf drive south of Muscat, is at the northern tip of Sharqiya Sands, and serves as a launching point for many day and overnight trips into the desert. It’s also where you can meet up with one of the local lodge guides who will then drive you through the desert to your lodge or camp
5. Sharqiya Sands is also known locally as Ramlat al Wahiba (and also Wahiba Sands). 6. Sharqiya Sands may seem like a barren, lifeless region, but it is in fact full of life. In 1986, the Royal Geographical Society expedition completed a survey of the desert’s diverse flora and fauna, where they documented 16 000 invertebrates as well as 200 species of other wildlife. They also documented 150 species of native plant life in the region.

Munich by bicycle! Join Wings of Oman as we head off to explore the glorious city of Munich, in Germany’s southern region, on two wheels. Munich by bicycle? Many say it’s the best way to see the city… 16
Check Out A famous bicycle riding quote reads, ‘It is impossible to feel sad while riding a bicycle.’ Another one says that, ‘Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bicycle.’ In the glorious city of Munich, in the Bavaria region in southern Germany, the above lines are especially true. For an authentic European travel experience, nothing much can compare to the simple pleasure of sightseeing around Munich on a bicycle. And it would be pretty impossible to feel sad while doing so. Within proximity of the Alps and some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe, it is not surprising that Munich is such a popular tourism destination, and also a top tier quality-of-liferankings world city. There is magnificent architecture here, green countryside in close proximity to the city, beautiful parks and river ways, a booming economy with global headquarters of many world-class companies, modern infrastructure, extremely low crime and excellent food (and great-tasting beer, which Munich is famous for – at the famous Oktoberfest, held every year in October). What can you expect from a typical bike tour around Munich? Well the ‘Classic 4-hour Bike Tour’ from Mike’s Bike Tours, for example, involves meeting up at the scheduled departure point for a brief introduction to the trip ahead. After this, you’ll be fitted out with a comfortable, easy-to-ride ‘cruiser’ style bike, for the tour. Then, after two hours of riding around the city (having started at the at Munich’s central Marienplatz square) your tour group will stop for a break at one of Munich’s popular eateries and ‘beer gardens’, where you can eat, drink and relax for an hour. You’ll then ride off onto the remainder of your route for the day – and past many of Munich’s most famous landmarks and locations. The sightseeing ride then ends around four hours after you get started, back at the Marienplatz. Sightseeing bicycle tours often follow the city’s dedicated bike paths, or wind their way through Munich’s parks and along its riverbanks, and therefore involve as little car traffic as possible, and are very safe. They tend not to be too strenuous either, and you’ll

you’ll also be able to explore some of the regions magnificent medieval castles.
What is there to see while you’re riding around the city? There’s the famous Königsplatz set of museum buildings; the Nymphenburg Palace, which is the main summer residence of the former rulers of Bavaria; Olympic Park stadium, the site of the 1972 Summer Games, which is still very much in use today as a sports and concert venue; Gärtner Platz, with its cafe culture and nightlife venues; the beautiful Odeonsplatz square; the muchloved Viktualienmarkt farmer’s market; and the Allianz Arena, which is the home stadium of the FC Bayern Munich football club, and known for its inflated plastic panel construction, and colour changing exterior; and much, much more.
For the more independent minded, bike rentals and bicycle route maps are available at many places – and there are over 200 kilometres of dedicated bicycle trails and routes to explore. Bikes can also be rented with the public Call-A-Bike system, which uses a system of authentication codes to automatically lock and unlock bikes. The beauty of this system lies in its convenience – after registering with the Call-A-Bike website, all you have to do is spot an available bike anywhere in the city, call the number listed on the bike from your mobile phone to unlock it, and ride off into the city. When you’re done, you can lock it and leave it – wherever you are – for the next rider to enjoy.
For something more specific, there are various themed bicycle tours offered by operators throughout the city – like the Third Reich Tour, which explores World War 2 historical landmarks in Munich; or a bicycle tour through Munich’s large English Garden public park; or a selection of e-bike (electronic bike) tours around the city, and at beautiful countryside locations just outside the city, where

Muscat: Sightseeing through the city… A sightseeing journey through Muscat is a sightseeing journey through some of the most interesting and exquisite cultural riches of the Sultanate of Oman. Join Wings of Oman as we travel to some unmissable Muscat highlights. Any trip through Muscat would be incomplete without a thorough investigation of the capital’s famous Muttrah Souq. Open daily from early morning until late in the evening (with a break for lunch), the Muttrah Souq is a relic of Oman’s age-old trading history and one of the oldest marketplaces in the Arab world. There are dozens of tiny shopfronts and stores packed into the alleyways and corridors of the souq, and this is where you’ll find treasures of all types – from Oman’s famous aromatic Frankincense resin, to Omani Khanjar daggers, to Arabian antiques, brilliantly colourful textiles, gold and silver jewellery, and much more.

After visiting the souq, you can take a walk along the Muttrah Corniche for views of the Port Sultan Qaboos harbour (where there are often one or two traditional wooden Omani dhows, moored just offshore), and breath of Sea of Oman air. The Muttrah Fish Market, at the northern end of the corniche, is where the local fishermen’s fresh catch is put on display and sold, every day. A few minutes away from Muttrah’s Souq and Corniche is the magnificent Al Alam Palace – the ceremonial palace of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. In 1972, the palace was rebuilt into the royal residence as we know today, and it is an exquisite example of contemporary and historic Arabic architecture. The general public

The magic of the Rhine Falls With a total width of 150 metres, total height of 23 metres, and a capacity of flow in ‘peak season’ of around 600 000 litres of water per second, the Rhine Falls, just outside Zurich in Switzerland, are Europe’s biggest and most famous waterfalls. If you’re travelling through Zurich, don’t miss out on the magic of the Rhine Falls. Of course, the highlight when visiting the Rhine Falls is a boat ride and then climb up to the lookout points on the famous rock outcrop in the middle of the falls.
If you prefer to stay on the banks of the river, there are also viewing platforms built on both sides of the Rhine, with spectacular panoramic views of the falls.
From the pier just below the falls at Schlössli Wörth, an experienced boat captain will steer you through the river’s wild, churning waters, before mooring the boat in the middle of the falls so that you and the rest of your boat passengers can disembark and ascend the rock’s staircase to the lookout point – and spectacular 360 degree views of the surrounding falls and riverbanks.
Also, guided tours of the falls are available for individuals and groups, where experienced guides take you to the most beautiful lookout spots from the shoreline, and from the bridges next to

Extreme Sailing Series: More Team Oman Air successes
The boat design and crew members might have changed for the 2016 season of the award-winning, adrenaline-fueled Extreme Sailing Series, but the team spirit on Oman Sail’s GC32 foiling catamaran Oman Air has remained unshakeable – as their sparkling performances in the first half of the season have shown. After four Acts of the Extreme Sailing Series in Muscat, Oman; Qingdao, China; Cardiff, UK and most recently Hamburg, Germany, the Oman Sail crew, with their boat Oman Air, is now sitting on top of the results table with an emphatic five-point lead over the second-placed Red Bull crew. Each Act presents its own crown to the winner and Team Oman Air is now in proud possession of three of them – having won in Oman, Cardiff and Hamburg. While they ended up coming second to the Swiss team of Alinghi in China, the Team Oman Air’s statistics for the first half of the year speak for themselves. They achieved out and out wins in 37% of the 83 races they completed, and also notched up a remarkable 72% of the podium places – a record that owes much to the calm and confident hand of Team Oman Air’s American skipper Morgan Larson on the helm, and the confidence he instils in his crew. When he took over at the start of the season, Larson was joined by three crew members who knew about winning – Oman’s Nasser Al Mashari, the UK’s Pete Greenhalgh, and Ed Smyth (Australia/New Zealand). All three had been instrumental in driving the Extreme 40 boat The Wave, Muscat to victory in the previous year. But while they all knew their roles on the boat, they had never raced with Larson before, or the other new crew member James Wierzbowski, and they all had never campaigned as a team on a foiling GC32 boat, which is designed to ‘fly’ above the water on its hydrofoils, as a team. But in fact, neither had any of the other teams. So when the curtain went up on the 2016 season in Muscat in February, the playing field was level. Al Mashari, however, racing in front of his home crowd, was convinced they had the edge. ‘We may be a new team but we are a strong team with a lot of fight and depth of experience. We always strive to do our best, we are always learning and growing as a team and we are driven to represent and raise the Omani flag on the international stage,’ he said. They sent it soaring high in Muscat when they claimed 11 race wins to earn their first crown and the bonds forged on the Al Mouj waterfront at the start of the year have proved indomitable ever since. The next challenge was to stay ahead of the other teams who were becoming more familiar – and expert – with their new boats as Alinghi proved by winning Act 2 in Qingdao, China. After each day’s racing, it is customary for the team to get together for a debrief to discuss what they did right and what they could have done better with boat handling, communications and the all-important starting tactics coming under scrutiny. This approach has served them well when the competition heats up as it did in Cardiff where 18 points separated the top four teams and even more so in Hamburg recently, when the last race was a make or break affair with Team Oman Air having to dig deep to earn their third victory, having locked horns with Alinghi in a tremendous battle. Four Acts of the Extreme Sailing Series now remain, starting with St Petersburg in Russia this month and there is everything still to play for. Oman Heritage
Treasures from the National Museum: The Omani Khanjar The Sultanate of Oman’s magnificent Khanjar have been used in Oman since at least the 3rd millennium BCE. In these distant past times they appear to have fulfilled practical, as well as ceremonial purposes, just as they do today. The National Museum of Oman is the Sultanate’s flagship cultural institution. Here, the Museum’s Acting DirectorGeneral, Jamal al-Moosawi, and the Head of Curatorial Unit, Moza al-Wardi describe the Khanjar in more detail… Early Khanjars from archaeological contexts are invariably straightbladed, and the origins of the broad, curved blade which typifies the present-day Omani Khanjar remain elusive. However, literary and iconographic evidence suggests that the development of an increasingly curved dagger blade started around 500 to 600 years ago (9th – 10th century AH/15th–16th century CE).
(specific to the Dhofar region and southern Arabia), and the Sa’īdistyle dagger (Khanjar Sa’īdi), named for the royal house of al-Said. The most distinctive of all the dagger styles is arguably this last one – the Sa’īdi-style dagger – which is featured as part of the Sultante of Oman’s national emblem and considered a symbol of the state. It is named after the royal house of al-Busaid and is characterised by a pommel-shaped hilt and seven-ringed construction. It features a Rhinoceros horn hilt and a silver-embroidered leather belt with a cast silver buckle. A cartridge-shaped tweezers set is affixed to the belt and an auxiliary knife is fitted into a leather sheath on the back of the scabbard. The decoration on the hilt and scabbard of the Khanjar include chased, stamped and applied work, filigree and granulation.
The wearing of a dagger by the Imam Sultan bin Saif al-Yarubi, which was similar to the ones worn today, is clearly described in a transmission of the Dutch East India Company around 345 years ago (the exact year was 1082–83 AH/1672 CE). ‘His Highness…had a belt around his middle,’ the transmission reads, ‘in which he wore a dagger which was crosswise covered with silk yarns.’ There are four main types of Omani Khanjars: The as-Suri dagger (named after the maritime town of Sur), the an-Nazwi dagger (named after the interior town of Nazwa), the al-Janbīyah dagger
Ownership of a Khanjar Sa’īdi is not restricted to the royal family, and it may be worn by any Omani citizen – although it will always be referred to as Sa’īdi.
