alongside a Flight Safety Awareness Program and our recently upgraded Emergency Response Centre. Meanwhile, Oman Air’s outstanding punctuality is coordinated from our state-of-the-art Integrated Operations Centre. The Centre monitors all our aircraft’s movements, maintaining constant communication and providing support to their crews. Crews are also assisted by our implementation of the ‘Electronic Flight Bag’, which helps us improve efficiency and reduce our environmental impact by transferring manuals and documents onto iPads. We have also recently finalised a joint venture partnership between Oman Air and Menzies Aviation to provide ground handling services at all airports across Oman. In addition, work is underway to prepare for the operation of the new airport terminal at Muscat International Airport. I hope that I have shed some light on one of the biggest departments in Oman Air and provided you with some interesting facts about what is happening throughout Oman Air’s network. On behalf of all my colleagues at Oman Air, I am very pleased to welcome you aboard your flight today.

But achieving those standards takes a lot of preparation. To ensure that all our guests enjoy their flights, and reach their destinations safely and on time, our inflight crews – who are drawn from 47 nations across our global network – are extensively trained on all aspects of service delivery and safety. Sur Lighthouse
Latitude: 22° 34’ 8” N Longitude: 59° 32’ 22” E
The three-storied Ayjah Lighthouse in Sur is an unmissable landmark in this famous maritime town in Oman. It is an attractive and interesting point for a quick stopover en-route to other destinations in the area, and provides the opportunity for some classic nautical-themed travel photos. 1. Sur is the capital of Oman’s Ash Sharqiyah Region, in northeastern Oman. It is located around 200 kilometres by road from Muscat, and around 45 kilometres by road from Ras Al Hadd – the eastern-most tip of the Arabian Peninsula.
Sur’s main beach, harbour, and the watchtowers on the opposite side of Sur’s lagoon entrance. 8. Close to the Lighthouse is the Sur Maritime Museum, which has on display a magnificent ocean-going wooden dhow, which was retired after spending 43 years at sea in the Gulf and Arabian Sea.
2. For hundreds of years, Sur was an important trading centre and point-of-call for merchants and travellers sailing from all over the Indian Ocean.
9. The Sur boat-building yard is also nearby, and it’s here where you can still see master craftsmen building oceangoing dhows the traditional way.
3. Today, the sea still plays an important role in the lives of the Sur people, and it remains the home of traditional wooden dhow building in the Sultanate.
10. Sur itself is still the home of many boat builders, fishermen, and ‘nakhoda’ Omani sailing captains.
4. The lighthouse itself is known locally as the Ayjah Lighthouse, and is located on the tip of the Ayjah village headland, which juts out to sea at the eastern part of Sur.
Getting to Sur/Ayjah Lighthouse The town of Sur is around a 200 kilometre drive from Muscat, via the Muscat-Sur coastal highway. After arriving in the town itself, you’ll need to cross over the recently completed suspension bridge, which links the main part of Sur to the eastern Ayjah area. After this, continue a few hundred metres more towards the tip of the Ayjah headland, and the lighthouse itself.
5. The lighthouse is three stories high, and features a domed roof that is exquisitely decorated with blue Arabic architecture-style geometric designs. 6. Sur also makes a great base from which to explore nearby attractions like Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi, the historical ruins at the village of Qalhat, and the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve. 7. The lighthouse tower itself, as well as the base around the lighthouse provides excellent views overlooking

Coastal Kerala: Southern India’s beach delights India’s southern state of Kerala has a coastline that is around 600 kilometres in length. It’s a magnificent stretch of Arabian Sea shoreline, and Wings of Oman goes off to explore its palm-shaded beaches, the traditional wooden houseboats on Kerala’s emerald backwaters, the historic Fort Kochi, and much more. Here are ten travel highlights of coastal Kerala… #1 Take a houseboat cruise: Kerala’s present day houseboats are huge, slow moving exotic barges used for leisure trips, and are in fact reworked versions of the kettuvallam boats of old times, which were made with planks of jack-wood joined together with coir. The original kettuvallams were used to carry tons of rice and spices to Kerala’s coastal trading ports. Today, the houseboats have all the creature comforts of a good hotel – including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, and a balcony which provides uninterrupted views of the surrounding rivers, villages, and plantations. #2 Rejuvenate at Varkala Beach: The beautiful Varkala Beach, with its palm-shaded back-beach, is a short drive south of Kollam, in the south of Kerala. Besides the sandy shoreline itself – which is very popular with tourists – Varkala has a 2 000 year-old Vishnu Temple, and the Ashramam Sivagiri Mutt in the area. There are also many accommodation facilities for tourists here, and Varkala is fast becoming a popular spot for Ayurvedic massage spa treatments.
The traditional Vallam Kali boat races are held annually throughout Kerala

Check Out #3 Picnic at Thirumullavaram Beach: This secluded beach is located just north of Kollam in the state of Kerala, and makes for an ideal picnic spot. Just offshore is the Nyarazhcha Para – the ‘Sunday Rock’ – that can be seen from the beach at low tide.
backwater canals and rivers. These boats are large wooden canoes that can accommodate up to 100 rowers and more, and it is a spectacular sight, seeing them in action. The most famous race is for the Nehru Trophy Vallam Kalli, which is held on the second Saturday of August as a tribute to the former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who had a keen interest in this sport.
#4 Explore Fort Kochi: According to Kerala’s official tourism guide, ‘To explore the historic town of Fort Kochi, there is no better choice than setting out on foot. Relax, breathe deep and come out in cotton, soft shoes and yes – a straw hat. At each and every nook of this island steeped in history, there is something interesting to explore. It is a world of its own, retaining the spirit and artefacts of a bygone era – and still proud of those days.’ Originally, Kochi was a fishing village in the Kingdom of Kochi in the pre-colonial Kerala. The territory that would be later known as Fort Kochi was granted to the Portuguese in 1503 by the Rajah of Kochi. #5 Watch the traditional boat races: Every year, Kerala’s Vallam Kali traditional boat races take place on the state’s picturesque

Travel Token: Aranmula Kannadi Metal Mirror Aranmula Kannadi are a type of ornamental mirror made of metal instead of glass, using a special metallurgic process that gives the surface of the metal a glossy, reflective finish. They were originally made in Aranmula, a small town in the southern region of Kerala, but are now available throughout Kerala and they make for a charming souvenir gift to take back home with you.

Check Out #6 Party at Kovalam Beach: Located near Trivandrum, Kovalam Beach was a centre for many popular counter-culture movements in sixties, and it is well known today for its energetic beach parties. #7 Get extreme at Muzhappilangadu Beach: Near Kannur, this pristine stretch of shoreline is where many adventure activities like paragliding, parasailing, sea-kayaking and kitesurfing are on offer for visitors. #8 Indulge in an Ayurvedic spa treatment: Kerala is world famous for its practice of the ancient healing art of Ayurveda, and it has established itself as a destination where you can indulge in and enjoy a range of Ayurvedic spa and massage treatments. #9 Kayak Kerala’s backwaters: The backwaters of Kerala are perfectly suited to sea-kayaking, and various tours can be arranged through several adventure operators based around Kerala. The Kollam backwaters, and Ashtamudi Lake, are excellent destinations. #10 Savour a Sadhya meal: Kerala’s traditional buffet meal, the sadhya, is served on a large plaintain or banana tree leaf. The meal generally has up to 24 small vegetable servings – both savoury and sweet – and is accompanied by pappadams (paperthin fried bread made from lentil flour), along with banana chips and jaggery sweet, and mooru (spiced buttermilk). Don’t leave Kerala without having several Sadhyas!

Wadi Darbat is one of the most scenic and popular spots in Salalah
Travels in Dhofar: Cool off during the Khareef summer season With the Khareef monsoon weather in full bloom, and with Dhofar’s rich cultural heritage on full display at the Salalah Tourism Festival, it’s currently a wonderful time to be travelling in the southern parts of the Sultanate of Oman. Oman’s southern region of Dhofar is currently experiencing the blissfully cool, wet weather of the Khareef monsoon season, which takes place from around June to September each year. The streams and waterfalls are coming alive with flowing water, the temperatures are dropping into the blissfully cool mid-20 degree Celsius range, and the vegetation and foliage in the valleys and surrounding hills around Dhofar are turning bright green with the constant light mist and rain. The famous Salalah Tourism Festival is also in full swing – with its celebrations of
the best of Oman’s beautiful cultural traditions and heritage. With all this on the go right now, it really is a wonderful time to be travelling in Salalah, Dhofar, and the southern regions of the Sultanate of Oman – and it doesn’t take much to imagine why large numbers of Arabian Peninsula, Gulf, and international visitors shift themselves off to this region during the summer season for a break. Looking for ideas on what to do to make the most of the Khareef season? Here are some not-to-be-missed highlights:

Check In
Wadi Darbat: This is one of the most scenic and popular spots in Salalah for families and their kids (as well as photographers) wanting to witness how the region’s waterfalls, streams, and ‘khors’ come alive with flowing water during the Khareef.
Jebel Samhan Nature Reserve: Covering an area of nearly 5 000 km2, this mountainous nature reserve is home to the extremely rare Arabian Leopards, Striped Hyenas, Nubian Ibex, and many other species. It’s a true paradise for travellers during the Khareef.

months, Mughsail beach is perfect for long walks and refreshing dips in the sea. During summer however, the sea tends to be off-limits due to large waves and wet weather, but it is still a popular spot for families who are keen to see the famous Marneef Cave, and witness the Mughsail blowholes, which shoot giant plumes of water into the air during the Khareef season.
The Lost City of Ubar: Also known as Oman’s ‘Land of Frankincense’, the Lost City of Ubar is the UNESCO World Heritage Site which was originally a centre for trade for this highly-prized aromatic resin, of which Salalah and Dhofar was famous for. Khor Rori: Dhofar is a birdwatchers paradise, and the Khor Rori coastal lagoon, which is just outside Salalah, is where birders can get up close to a diverse range of marine birdlife (and very often, camels as well). Khor Rori is fed by the waters of the previously mentioned Wadi Darbat. Salalah’s Souq Al Hafah: During the Khareef season,
Dhofar has always been an important region for Frankincense trade
Salalah’s much-loved Souq Al Hafah is filled with visitors from all over Oman and the GCC – all intent on acquiring items like high quality frankincense, silver and gold jewellery, Omani textiles, and traditional Omani delicacies.
Dalkut Road: The drive to Dalkut, which is around 160 kilometres south west of Salalah, takes you through some spectacular wadi and mountainous terrain that comes alive with green foliage during the Khareef season. It’s a scenic journey not to be missed. As Oman’s Ministry of Tourism describes the region, ‘Dhofar includes a distinctive natural diversity where the coast blends with the mountains and the desert in wonderful harmony,’ and where ‘the mountains rise to a height of over 1 500 metres, then descend into a flat plain that embraces sandy beaches stretching for hundreds of kilometres.’ Come and cool off during the Khareef – you won’t be disappointed!
The Lost City of Ubar
Oman Air: More flights to Salalah… Salalah has experienced major year-on-year growth in visitor numbers in recent times. With this in mind, Oman Air recently increased its frequencies to Salalah in response to the rising demand for flights by travellers from the Gulf, the Far East, Europe, and Oman itself.

Verona Arena: An unmissable opera experience The Verona Arena is an ancient Roman Amphitheatre in the northern Italian town of Verona, known for its large-scale opera performances and music concerts that still take place regularly today. Fancy an evening spent in a nearly 2 000 year-old arena, watching some of the finest live performances in the arts world today? It’s on offer at the Verona Arena – and an unmissable experience.
performances held here. The arena itself lays claim to being the world’s third-largest amphitheatre to survive from antiquity, and although much of the outer ring was damaged during an earthquake during the 1100s, the inner part is still intact.
While it was built almost 2 000 years ago, the Verona Arena is one of the best preserved ancient structures of its kind, and still very much in use today. Owing to its outstanding acoustics the arena is used primarily as the setting for monumental opera performances produced for the famous opera festivals which take place here every year.
‘For over a hundred years, this Roman Amphitheatre has been transformed into the ‘World’s largest open-air opera theatre’ every summer’
Once capable of housing 20 000 patrons for each event, this number is now limited to 15 000 due to logistical and safety reasons. But every year, an estimated 500 000-plus people in total attend the

Landmark Travels The highlight at the Verona Arena every year is the prestigious Verona Opera Festival. According to the official site for the event, the Opera Festival had its origins in August 1913, when the first performance of the classic opera Aida was organised to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the famous Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi. For over a hundred years since then (except for two short breaks during the two World Wars), the Roman amphitheatre has been transformed into the ‘World’s largest open-air opera theatre’ every summer. ‘Year after year, for over a hundred years, the Verona Arena has ensured spectators the wonder and emotion that only the experience of attending an opera under the star-studded sky of the world’s largest open-air theatre has been able to create,’ say the festival organisers. The town of Verona itself is famous for being the setting for Romeo and Juliet, the famous romantic play by the English playwright William Shakespeare. According to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the historic city has also preserved a remarkable number of monuments from antiquity, the medieval and Renaissance periods, and represents an outstanding example of a military stronghold. These days, although it is often compared to the nearby, and very popular tourist destination of Venice, many travellers agree that Verona is a more relaxed and pleasant place to visit.

Last-gasp victory for Musandam Oman Sail leaves Oman proud Musandam-Oman Sail recently set a new world record for the prestigious Volvo Round Ireland Race, as they circumnavigated the Emerald Isle in exactly 38 hours, 37 minutes, and 7 seconds. When Oman’s top sailors Fahad Al Hasni, Sami Al Shukaili and Yasir Al Rahbi arrived on the dock in Wicklow, Ireland, to board their MOD70 race boat Musandam-Oman Sail, an excited buzz was sweeping through the 2016 Volvo Round Ireland fleet crews that the race was set to be fast. Crazy fast.
unbearably high since the existing world speed record for the Round Ireland race had been achieved in a previous race in 2015 by the Musandam-Oman Sail crew, and they knew that they would have to put up a monumental fight this year to better it. Just before 10h00am on 6th May 2015, they ended up crossing the finish line in Dublin Bay amid great celebrations after circumnavigating Ireland in 40 hours, 51 minutes and 57 seconds racing purely against the clock. This was three hours and 50 minutes faster than the 44 hours and 42 minutes set by Steve Fossett for his first ever world record back in September 1993 aboard his 60 foot trimaran Lakota.
The three Omani sailors, members of French veteran Sidney Gavignet’s offshore crew, were excited and concerned when they learned that the breeze across the 704 nautical mile race course around the Emerald Isle was looking favourable for a brand new world speed record in Ireland’s premier offshore race. They knew they were in for an exhilarating ride. Stress levels would be

racing miles under their belts. It would be another remarkable achievement to break the record ‘But not so much fun if someone else broke it,’ commented teammate Damian Foxall as the boats crept over the start line in deceptively light airs that looked nothing like the record-breaking conditions they were promised. All eyes were on the three giant trimarans and at this early stage, Musandam-Oman Sail seemed to be off the pace, with Phaedo3 from the US and Britain’s Team Concise leading the charge. Only half a mile separated all three boats, as the speeds began to pick up. This three-way tussle continued for 37 exhausting hours during which time no one rested, let alone slept. Food and liquids were gulped down with eyeballs pinned on the speed dials which told the same frustrating story, namely that the Musandam-Oman Sail boat remained stubbornly adrift of their two rivals. That record had stood for 22 years so their great endeavour – and herculean efforts - had earned Al Hasni, Al Shukaili and Al Rahbi, plus the three other members of the MOD70 crew, a special place in sporting history. The Omani pride was palpable. The new world record meant more to them than any previous achievement since it showed that the Sultanate of Oman was already making its mark at the highest level of world sailing, just seven years after Oman Sail, the government backed national initiative, was first launched.
In the final hour, navigator Jean Luc Nelias consulted with ‘local boy’ Foxall, who happens to be Ireland’s most accomplished offshore sailor and came up with an inspired tactical move to veer away from the fleet and ‘go inside Howth’ on an inshore track. The effect was instant and they picked up speed to nudge ahead of the pack. When they crossed the finish line less than one mile later, they were six nail-biting minutes ahead of Phaedo3 and with a new time of 38 hours 37 minutes and 7 seconds, had broken their own 2015 record by 2 hours, 14 minutes and 50 seconds.
Now, 13 months later, the pressure was on to retain their record. To do that, however, they would have to win the race which was no easy task since they were up against two other superfast identical MOD70s, both crewed by professional sailors with thousands of

Underwater Zanzibar: Come see the Zanzibar seas The Zanzibar archipelago consists of the two main Islands of Zanzibar and Pemba – as well as over 50 smaller islets in the surrounding area. For you and your family, it has some of the best diving and snorkelling that the East African coastline and Indian Ocean have to offer. So bring your mask and fins, and come see the Zanzibar seas.
Zanzibar, the famous ‘Spice Island’ of East Africa, has been an attractive East African travel destination for many years. The beautiful white-sand beaches in the area, traditional wooden dhows, great seafood, colourful ‘Tinga Tinga’ art, an increasing number of luxury resorts and hotels, and the classic architecture of Zanzibar’s Stone Town all make for an unforgettable travel experience. On top of this, Zanzibar has some of the best diving and snorkelling that the East African coastline and Indian Ocean have to offer. And for you and your family, it would be worth your while travelling to Zanzibar purely to explore the pristine coral reefs, fantastic variety of marine life, and very often excellent sea and visibility conditions that exist here for diving. One of the great benefits about diving in Zanzibar is the sheer diversity of dive sites on offer. There are diving and snorkelling sites that will suite the complete beginner – with reefs and marine life in shallow water, with little or no currents or waves. And there are also sites where experienced divers can explore deeper reefs and wall dives, night diving, drift dives, and open ocean conditions while searching for large marine species like manta rays and sharks, and pelagic gamefish like tuna and wahoo.
Popular dive sites at Mnemba Atoll include ‘Kichuani’, which is a vertical undersea rock wall that drops from two metres deep down to over 30 metres, and which is home to a huge variety of corals and colourful fish species. Dolphins and White Tip Reef Sharks are often encountered at Kichuani. There’s also ‘Wattabomi’, where there are always a number of turtles swimming around; and the famous ‘Big Wall’ site, which is on the east side of the Mnemba Atoll, and features a vertical rock wall dropping from 18 metres deep, down to 55 metres. There are many overhangs and small caves to explore on the wall, and there’s a good chance to see Green Turtles, as well as large pelagic fish like Tuna, Kingfish, and Rainbow Runners.
Many of Zanzibar’s dive operators are based at Nungwi, which is the large village on the northern end of the island. It is from here that you have access to the famous Mnemba Atoll marine conservation area, with its vast area of coral reefs and tiny Mnemba Island. Visibility in Mnemba is usually excellent, and the whole area is a hotspot for encounters with Green Turtles and Common Dolphins.
Nearby the Mnemba Atoll, ‘Leven Bank’ is a sea mountain in open ocean which drops from 12 metres deep, down to 55 metres, and is a meeting point of many large pelagic fish, and also where

around 27 degrees Celsius, and except for the rainy season (in March and April), water visibility is usually very good – often up to 30 metres and more.
Dhow and Snorkel Safari?
Oman and Zanzibar
If you and your family or friends are more of the ‘happy to stay on land’ types, but still want to experience a small sample of what underwater Zanzibar is all about, consider booking yourselves onto a dhow and snorkel safari through one of the island’s dive lodges. These consist of a trip out to sea on a traditional Swahili dhow, followed by a relaxed and very easy snorkelling session at one of the coral reefs in the area. You’ll then have lunch on the boat or at a nearby beach, or if it’s in the afternoon, a cocktail sundowner session on the dhow as you sail back to shore. Dolphins are regularly sited during these trips, and it’s often possible to snorkel alongside them as they swim near to the boat.
For centuries, Zanzibar was a key trading point for merchants and explorers from the Arabian Peninsula, India, and Asia. Towards the end of the 1600’s, as a result of regular trade with the Sultanate of Oman, Zanzibar came under control of Oman’s ruling elite, and remained this way for around two centuries. The height of Omani rule came during the reign of Seyyid Said Bin Sultan Al Busaid, the Sultan who moved his capital from Muscat, to Zanzibar’s Stone Town, in 1840.

Mystery Shopping Programme helps Oman Air ‘To become the Best’
Over the recent months, ‘Mystery Shoppers’ have been travelling Oman Air’s network to obtain a clear and realistic picture of every stage of the Oman Air passenger experience. Driven by the strong and clear ambition ‘To becomethe Best’, the airline is now set to enter the second phase of this extensive quality assurance programme.
Having examined and precisely measured every touch-point along the way, the mystery shoppers’ findings are now being analyzed to establish Oman Air’s strengths and weaknesses. The results will indicate where the national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman needs to take appropriate action. Already, best practice has been shared, corrective actions taken, and new ideas and action plans implemented. A process of continuous monitoring is also being put in place.
quality experts first monitored Oman Air’s call centers and the city ticket offices, before progressing to all airport departments, such as check-in, lounge, boarding, connection and luggage delivery. Finally, each component of the in-flight experience was meticulously detailed. Throughout the process, both soft skills (attitude and ‘people skills’) and hard skills (product knowledge) were tested. The results, quantitative and qualitative, have been reflected on ‘dashboards’, which show the time, day and touchpoint of every customer contact. Staff have been provided with feedback on the service they provide.
Both on the ground and in the air, Oman Air’s guests encounter a number of the airline’s different customer facing teams. As Eng. Abdulaziz Al Raisi,Oman Air’s Executive Vice President for Product and Brand development explains, ‘Oman Air is committed to offering every customer a seamless, consistent and high quality service. This is regardless of the number of teams that they encounter, where the customer is within Oman Air’s international network, or at what stage they are on their individual journeys.’ Oman Air has entrusted BVA Mystery Shopping to execute this intensive programme. The company’s
This Mystery Shopper Programme and its findings are supporting Oman Air’s teams to work consistently throughout the network, with a positive and constructive approach to making rapid progress.
