Marhaba When I flew aboard the Dreamliner on its inaugural flight to Salalah, I was deeply impressed. And when we introduced the aircraft to our prestigious Frankfurt service, so were our customers. Our growth, together with our sustained commitment to quality, has also impressed many others. Over the course of 2015, we received a large number of awards, three of which deserve special mention. In June, we received ‘Best Airline Staff Service in the Middle East’ at the World Airline Awards. And just last month, we were delighted to receive ‘World’s Leading Airline Economy Class 2015’ and ‘World’s Leading Airport Lounge – Business Class 2015’ at the World Travel Awards. The thanks of Oman Air go to all who voted for us. Whilst these accolades confirm that we are an airline of the highest quality, we will not rest on our laurels. Our commitment to ‘Becoming the Best’ is total and we will, over the coming year, be introducing a number of initiatives which will ensure that Oman Air continues its upward trajectory.
On behalf of everyone at Oman Air, I am very pleased to welcome you aboard your flight. As we enter a New Year, Oman Air is set to build on the exciting and inspiring developments which have taken place over the last 12 months. 2015 was the first full year of our major programme of fleet and network expansion. As it continues to progress, it will offer our customers significantly greater choice and convenience. And, in its role as the national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman, Oman Air will deliver further tangible benefits for our country. Our expansion and continued success will bring increased revenues and greater employment opportunities for Oman, as well as giving the opportunity to millions of visitors to come and stay in our beautiful hotels and explore this amazing destination.
However, none of our achievements – those over the last year, or those to come – could have been attained without the invaluable support of our customers, and of our countrymen and women. Your loyalty, both within the Sultanate of Oman and throughout our international network, has enabled Oman Air to truly spread its wings and I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude. In the meantime, I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year, and I hope to welcome you back aboard Oman Air very soon.
Paul Gregorowitsch Chief Executive Officer
To date, the programme has seen us launch five exciting new services to Singapore, Manila, Jakarta, Goa and Dhaka. We have also increased frequencies on many services - notably on our route to Paris, which has increased from four flights per week to five. And, following the recent agreement between the governments of Oman and India, we will soon operate daily or double daily services to all 11 of our Indian destinations. In addition, we have taken delivery of some truly exceptional aircrafts. In January, we received an additional Airbus A330, whilst between February and November, six further Boeing 737s arrived in Muscat. And perhaps most exciting of all was the delivery of our first two Boeing 787 Dreamliners, in October and November.

Must See Oman
Al Alam Palace
Latitude: 23° 36’ 57” N Longitude: 58° 35’ 41” E
Al Alam Palace is the ceremonial palace of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said. Built in the heart of Old Muscat in 1972, the ‘Flag Palace’ as it is sometimes called, is an exquisite example of contemporary and historic Arabic architecture – and it is one of Muscat’s tourism highlights. 1. The palace has a history of over 200 years, with the original building recorded as being created by Imam Sultan bin Ahmed (the direct grandfather of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, who ruled the country in the late 1700s and early 1800s).
7. The building is fronted by four giant gold and blue columns, and adorned with classic and contemporary elements of Arabic architecture. It is a truly magnificent structure, and obviously a perfect fit for the Sultan himself – His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.
2. In 1972, the palace was rebuilt into the royal residence that we know today, and into ‘Oman’s most flamboyant example of contemporary Islamic design,’ as the wellknown ‘Rough Guides’ travel advisory describes it.
8. The two best times to visit and photograph the palace are when the sun is shining (and the gold and blue columns at the front of the building are giving off a brilliant lustre), and at night, when the palace is lit up with a beautiful coloured light display.
3. During its relatively short but important history, Al Alam Palace has hosted a selection of prominent international visitors. It has also been the chosen location for numerous high-profile state ceremonies.
9. The palace is located in central Muscat, within walking distance of several historic forts, museums and art galleries, and also the centuries-old Muttrah Souq and Muttrah harbour corniche.
4. The small, but exquisitely designed Al Khor Mosque is located behind the Al Alam Palace and is commonly known as the ‘Mosque of the Family’ in reference to it being used occasionally by the royal family.
10. The Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, which were originally completed around the late 1500s, can be seen near the palace, towering above the surrounding area, and the Sea of Oman.
5. Al Alam is the centerpiece of a long pedestrian boulevard that is lined with flower beds, grassy areas, and government buildings that feature extravagant, polished white marble walls.
Al Alam Palace is located in Old Muscat, next to the last traffic circle of Al Bahri Road. (Travelling away from Muttrah/Sultan Qaboos Port towards Sidab).
6. Visitors are not allowed inside the palace itself. However from the main entrance gate, which is a popular stop-off for tour groups and travellers, you’re able to get an excellent view of the property.
Various tour operators in Muscat offer sightseeing tours of the Palace. The Big Bus Muscat hop-on hopoff bus also stops off at the Palace entrance. 15

10 Top Travel Destinations for 2016
Someone once said that ‘To travel, is to live’. Here are ten top travel destinations that are guaranteed to make you feel very alive in 2016, when you visit. Someone also once said that ‘When in doubt, travel!’ So if you’re living in doubt, go get your ticket, and get to one of these destinations! Amsterdam, Netherlands Amsterdam is a city that is bursting with life, friendliness, and culture. It’s also a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle – and transport and traffic jams – of ‘normal’ modern cities, and make your way around by bicycle, on the hundreds of cycle lanes, or by boat, on the hundreds of historic canals, for a few days. In a technology overloaded 2016, isn’t this what we’ll need for a few days? Amsterdam’s food, nightlife, museums, walking tours, (and tulips), also happen to be some of the best in Europe.
Munich, Germany Munich makes the perfect starting point for any exploration of Germany’s Bavaria region – which is all about its storybook-style castles, magic

forests, and medieval villages – as well as a superb selection of historical sites and museums (and art galleries). And of course in 2016, Munich will once again be the home of the ‘Oktoberfest’, one of the world’s greatest festivals, and a celebration of local beers and German specialty foods.
Colombo, Sri Lanka What seems to set Sri Lanka apart from many of the rest of the world’s tropical islands, is the sheer number of things to do here. It’s a small island, with a lot to offer. There are beautiful beaches, interesting wildlife (including elephants and leopards), great surfing and kitesurfing conditions, authentic teas and
Check Out spices, over 2 000 years of fascinating history, and dozens and dozens of cultural and religious sites to explore. There are also now a growing number of luxury hotels and resorts to stay at in 2016 – including the iconic 150 year-old Galle Face Hotel, which recently just completed a major restoration.
Manila, Philippines In 2016, Manila will no doubt continue to thrive as one of Asia’s true megacities. As well as outstanding sightseeing, visitors who put in the effort in Manila will discover its creative soul – from edgy galleries to a lively music scene. Combine this with a happening art culture, high-energy nightlife, and a world of natural heritage throughout the rest of the islands, and you have a destination not to miss out on this year.
Zanzibar, Tanzania It is no secret that the island of Zanzibar and its neighbouring islands have been an attractive East African travel destination for years. The classic, old architecture of Zanzibar’s Stone Town, combined with the beautiful beaches in the area, wooden dhows, fantastic diving conditions, colourful ‘Tinga Tinga’ style art, and great cuisine, all make for an unforgettable experience. But in the last year or two, a select few highprofile hotels have established luxury resorts on the islands as well. And this means that in 2016, you can have all of the above experiences – combined with luxurious, five-star style living.

Check Out Mumbai, India As India’s economy is set to boom in 2016, Mumbai is also set to thrive as a tourist destination. Lonely Planet recently named Mumbai as one of the top cities in the world for travellers in 2016. The bestselling travel guide explained that ‘2016 is set to be the year that this powerhouse of fashion, finance and film comes of age,’ and that ‘The heart of the city contains some of the grandest colonialera architecture on the planet, but explore a little more and you’ll uncover unique bazaars, hidden temples, hipster enclaves and India’s premier restaurants and nightlife.’
Dhaka, Bangladesh Dhaka is a favourite departure point for travellers visiting Sundarban National Park – the famous wildlife sanctuary that is home to Royal Bengal tigers and spotted deer. The reason for this is that from Dhaka, it’s possible to take an overnight cruise to Sundarban on a beautiful old colonial-period paddle steamer (the ‘Dhaka Rocket Steamer’ is a popular classic). A trip back in time like this may be what you need in 2016. Back in the city, you can take a rickshaw taxi through Dhaka’s fascinating streets. Or, have a Bangladeshi boatman paddle you along Dhaka’s Buriganga River on one of their traditional wooden canoes – a fun experience, but not for the faint hearted, as it requires that you constantly dodge hundreds of boats, while jostling for the best position on the river.

One of these, for example, is the Jakarta Jazz Festival, which takes place every March for 3 days, and is one of the largest Jazz events in the world, featuring dozens of top-class performances from the planet’s greatest Jazz artists. Combine this with the fact that Jakarta has a thriving culture of cuisine, shopping, and nightlife, and that Jakartans are well known to be friendly, optimistic and positive people, and you have a great destination to travel to in 2016.
Maldives, Malé The Maldives really does live up to the somewhat clichéd description of an ‘Indian Ocean Paradise’. It really is just that. A simple mention of the Maldives conjures up images of blue waters and soft, white sands, and beaches fringed by palm trees swaying gently in the breeze – and the collection of more than 1 000 islands boast a selection of resorts that are unparalleled in luxury. Plus, the activities on offer around the islands and at the resorts are perfect for families with kids. Maldives, with its capital city of Malé as the gateway to the archipelago, really is a paradise.

to the Omani Ministry of Tourism, throughout the festival, a full program of events such as comedy shows, singing contests and educational talks will be on offer at the Child Theatre Pavilion. Other attractions include educational exhibitions on local wildlife and marine life, craft workshops, a children’s photo gallery and sports-based competitions.
Sporting festivities: This year’s festival should also include a list of popular sporting and outdoor events, similar to those featured at the 2015 festival – like beach volleyball, car drifting and karting, motor-cross, basketball, the popular Muscat Marathon, and also skydiving displays by the Oman Air Force and Oman Royal Guard. Omani culture: Another important part of the Muscat Festival are the dozens of lectures, discussions and workshops that take place alongside the main entertainment. During last year’s festival, for example, the cultural events program had a ‘Folk Tales for Kids’ session, ‘Oman in the Eyes of the Photographers’ competition and gallery, a ‘Folk Poetry Evening Gathering’, and a ‘Session on the Contemporary Arabic Novel’, along with many other significant happenings. This year should feature similar themed events at various venues around the capital. 23

Last year, one of the major attractions – especially for kids – was the Snow Village at Al Amerat, which was a huge, underground glacial cave system. Inside the cave, visitors could experience real ice and real arctic conditions, and lifesize replicas of arctic animals. Another great attraction was the Dinosaur Village, where over a dozen, life-size dinosaurs were put on display around the Al Naseem Park grounds. The dinosaurs moved and roared, and the display took visitors on an educational journey – millions of years back in time.

Landmark Travels
Petra: The magnificence of Jordan’s ancient stone city Petra is Jordan’s ancient stone city that is famous for its magnificent rock-cut architecture. It is an icon of Middle East travel, and one of the most recognized tourism sites in the world. Although much has been written about Petra, nothing really prepares you for this amazing place. It has to be seen to be believed. Petra is carved and built into the surrounding rose-red coloured mountains and gorges, and the entire area is riddled with dozens of secret passages, ancient temples, hidden rooms and underground water channels. Approaching the place for the first time, it’s easy to feel like an explorer discovering a long-lost civilization – or a film star working onto the set of an exotic action adventure production.
and the Southern Levant, around 2 000 years ago. Over many years, it became an important crossroads and trading centre between Arabia, Egypt and the Syria-Phoenicia region. Petra has been described as ‘One of the most precious cultural properties of man’s cultural heritage,’ by the UNESCO World Heritage Site organisation, which listed it as an official site since
The site itself is located halfway between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea, in the southern Jordanian governorate of Ma’an. Historians say it was originally engineered and built by an advanced society called the Nabataeans – an Arabic people who inhabited northern Arabia

Landmark Travels 1985. It has been named as one of the official ‘Wonders of the World’, and it is Jordan’s most-visited tourist attraction. While Petra’s main highlights can be comfortably done in one day, you could in fact spend many days exploring the place. What makes it even more fascinating, is that researchers and archaeologists say that much of the structure and remnants of the city still lie undiscovered and untouched, hidden beneath the surface. For visitors, Petra’s three main highlights include firstly, the narrow ‘Siq’, which is flanked on either side by sheer rock walls 80 metres high, and which serves as the main entrance to the city. Secondly, ‘The Treasury’, which is the 30 metre wide by 43 metre high rock-cut temple that’s the mostphotographed part of the Petra – and spectacular to look at. And thirdly, the 822 steps that have been carved into rock, that lead to the elevated ‘Monastery’ building, and provide magnificent views looking out over the surrounding valleys and desert.
Take photos: The best time to see Petra, especially if you’re planning to take photographs, is either early to mid-morning or late afternoon, when the sun highlights and enhances the natural colours of the rock. Visit the museums: There are two excellent museums at Petra – the Petra Archaeological Museum, and the Petra Nabataean Museum. Both of these have finds from excavations in the Petra region and insights into Petra’s fascinating past. Avoid the crowds: If you’re keen to avoid Petra’s crowds – and are brave enough for a very early start – head to Petra at sunrise. This way, you get Petra almost all to yourself, and also the opportunity to experience the magical beauty of Petra at dawn. The site is also open for evening tours (which tend to attract less crowds), on some nights of the week.
Practical info: There is a lot of walking to be done. This means that you must wear comfortable clothing and a good pair of shoes. Food-wise, there is a mixture of places to eat and drink – from small Bedouin tea stalls to multiple-table restaurants, but you’ll do well to bring along a packed lunch and plenty of water. There are also lots of souvenir stalls in the area, so make sure your bargaining skills are sharp!

Oman Adventure
Crossing the Empty Quarter: Meet the Team! This month, the team of two Omanis Mohammed Al Zadjali and Amour Al Wahaibi, and the Executive Director of Outward Bound Oman, Mark Evans, will be repeating the spectacular first ever crossing of the Rub Al Khali ‘Empty Quarter’ that the legendary Omani-British exploration team of Saleh Bin Kalut Al Rashidi Al Kathiri and Bertram Thomas completed just over 85 years ago.
Meet the team Mohammed Al Zadjali is a training manager at Outward Bound Oman. He says that he is honoured to carry the Omani flag during the expedition and spread the message to the Omani youth that ambition, combined with hard work and planning, is the key to achieving goals.
Having left from Salalah on the 10th December last month (the same date that Bertram Thomas and Sheikh Saleh Bin Kalut set off on in 1930 for their epic first crossing of the Empty Quarter), the team headed off north into the mountains of Dhofar and towards the desert. Following in the footsteps of Bin Kalut and Thomas, the team is expected to reach Doha, in Qatar, at the end of this month, after having completed an estimated 1 300 kilometres of travel by foot and by camel.
Amour Al Wahaibi has lead a life that is intimately linked to the desert, and he still lives in the small Bedouin community in Sharqiya Sands, where he was born – and where he has raised his seven children, who now help him with his work as an expert desert guide.
Very importantly, the expedition serves to celebrate His Majesty Sultan Qaboos’ 45th year as the ruler of Oman, which was commemorated in November last year. It also aims to inspire young Omanis to embody the fundamentals of responsibility and self-dependence and endurance in order to achieve their goals.
Mark Evans is a fellow of the Explorers Club of New York and The Royal Geographical Society in London. He set up Outward Bound Oman in 2009, and in 2004, set up the University of the Desert, which uses the power of the desert environment to foster intercultural dialogue.
Sheikh Mubarak Saleh Muhammad Saleh Bin Kalut, who is the great great grandson of Sheikh Saleh Bin Kalut, will join the team as they enter Saudi Arabia, and he will be wearing the same Khanjar and rifle carried by his great great grandfather during the 1930 crossing.

Young Emerging Artist Prize: The creative brilliance of Oman Muscat’s Stal Gallery recently went ahead with the 2015 Young Emerging Artist Prize. The event, which took place under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Tarik bin Shabib Al Said, served as a platform for some of Oman’s young artists to showcase and celebrate their brilliant creative talent.
If there’s one certain thing that can be observed from the Young Emerging Artist Prize at Muscat’s Stal Gallery, it is that there is no shortage of artistic talent and creativity in the Sultanate of Oman. The exhibition showcased a wide array of works from painting and photography, to mixed media and audio visual installations, and due to the quality and diversity of the work being showcased, it is clear to see that the future looks bright for high quality art and creativity in Oman. These included the ‘Grand Prize’ award, ‘Best Presentation’ award, and ‘Best Concept’ award, and these were handed out to Raiya Al Rawahi, Rawan Al Mahrouqi, and Safa Al Balushi respectively.

Family Traveller
Maldives: An unforgettable marine adventure A diving, snorkelling, and watersports trip for the family and kids in the Maldives? It’s an underwater adventure they’ll never forget! The Maldives has some of the most spectacular and accessible underwater scenery on the planet. There are gardens of coral reefs that resemble works of art; there are over 2 000 species of fish on the reefs and the open ocean; and the turquoise blue waters are almost always calm, crystal clear, and warm. For your family and children, it’s waiting to be explored, and an underwater paradise that they will never forget. Here are some of the marine life and water-based adventures not to be missed.
Snorkel the house reefs: The calm waters and local ‘house reefs’ surrounding many of the island resorts in the Maldives offer a kaleidoscope of marine species and lively corals for your kids to explore. And you definitely do not have to be a great swimmer to appreciate the Maldives’ underwater world. Plus, for kids and beginners, guided snorkelling trails can be easily arranged – with diving masks, fins and snorkels being provided by the resorts. (Some resorts also organise night time snorkelling excursions, during which unique nocturnal marine creatures can often be observed in their natural environments).
Take a seaplane photo flight: One of the most popular activities in the Maldives is a seaplane photo flight, where your family can have one of the most remarkable ‘sea’ journeys of their lives, and get a bird’s-eye view of the islands and natural atoll formations below. The comfortable seating and large windows

Family Traveller on the planes give you the opportunity to position your cameras perfectly to shoot the best pictures.
Learn to scuba dive: For qualified and experienced divers, there’s no question that the Maldives provides some of the best scuba diving on the planet. But for the family and kids, the Maldives can also be the ultimate destination to learn scuba diving, as there are hundreds of dive centres and schools at the various resorts around the archipelago. Most of them also have equipment to hire. Explore the depths in a sub: Maybe the most exciting and technical way to explore the underwater treasures of the Maldives is by embarking on a submarine dive (which can be arranged with some resorts) down to around 45 metres under the Indian Ocean waters. As the submarine descends, you and your kids will be greeted by schools of colourful fish. Then, in the deeper, darker depths, the exterior lights of the submarine enhance the surrounding visibility and reveal the hidden secrets of the sea – like sharks, giant groupers, napoleon wrasses, and old shipwrecks.
And if any of the above do not appeal to your kids, then there’s always some of the other water sport activities that the Maldives resorts are famous for – like sea-kayaking, catamaran sailing, wakeboarding, jet skis tours, parasailing, banana boat towing, windsurfing, surfing and kitesurfing.
Go on a dolphin and whale watching trip: The Maldives is a hotspot for dolphin and whale watching, with many varieties especially frequenting the islands during May. In fact, there are reportedly over 23 different types of dolphins and whales that have been recorded in Maldives waters – including Bottlenose Dolphins, Spotted Dolphins, Striped Dolphins, and Spinner Dolphins. (Large schools of the acrobatic Spinner Dolphins are frequently observed during the early morning and late afternoon). The largest living mammal on earth, the Blue Whale, can also often be seen from a boat, in deeper waters – as well as Sperm Whales, Bryde’s Whales, Beaked Whales, Short-fin Pilot Whales and Dwarf Sperm Whales. Manta and Whale Shark watching excursions are also very popular, and a thrilling outing for the kids.
Family holidays in the Maldives can be, well, a truly family affair, and an excellent vacation for the kids. With such spectacular marine life in abundance, it is also guaranteed to encourage them to appreciate and see first-hand the ocean’s richness and natural beauty. ‘For the family and kids, the Maldives is the ultimate destination to learn scuba diving’

Duqm: A top destination for Oman’s tourism future The Willayat of Duqm is located on a coastal strip of the Arabian Sea, about 550 kilometres south of Muscat. It is known for its beautiful beaches, pristine desert and dune landscapes, and it’s very unique ‘Rocks Park’, where a number of rare geological rock formations can be found. In fact, Duqm is poised to become one of Oman’s top travel destinations in the near future. There are a host of reasons why – including the beaches, desert, and rare rock formations – but also, very importantly, the fact that travellers can look forward to moderate weather conditions in the region especially during summer, when temperatures drop to as low as 25 degrees Celsius. Some of the spectacular beaches include Al Shuwaier and Ras Markaz, which are both a short drive south of Duqm, and the brilliant camping beach of Ras Madraka, which is around 80 kilometres south of the town, and provides breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean’s Arabian Sea. The Special Economic Zone Authority for Duqm (SEZAD) has taken a number of initiatives to create an environment that is conducive to the growth of tourism investments in the region. Included in these is the construction and operation of Duqm domestic airport, which started early operations on 23 July 2014, to connect Muscat to Duqm through four flights per
week. SEZAD is also completing the infrastructure in order to be able to dock cruise ships and sea transport at Duqm port. At the same time, SEZAD is conducting a number of campaigns to promote tourism in the area, attract investors, and increase the occupancy rate at Duqm’s hotels throughout the year.
