But the fun doesn’t stop there. As you make your way off the 17th and take a look at the par-5 18th hole, there are even more challenges. There is one of the irrigation ponds on the left side of the fairway and the tee shot gives you choices about how much distance you want to cut off. The green sits on a hill in front of the clubhouse. A great way to finish off the round.

Another new addition was a rock wall complete with a water fall on the par-5 fifth hole, which makes you think about how you want to attack the green with your approach shot.

The clubhouse sits on top of a hill and overlooks the property. The Apple Tree Grill is a popular spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

FALL GOLF TRIPS APPLE TREE GOLF CLUB

As you make your way around the course, it’s apparent that the housing component is an integral part. With houses and condominiums dotting the Apple Tree landscape, they really don’t come into play with the fairways being generous. But the houses and condos themselves are first-class. When people looking to relocate or move in Yakima, they see the benefits of over 300 days of sunshine a year and custom-built homes lining one of the top golf courses in the Pacific Northwest.

While there is plenty to like about Apple Tree Golf Course, the one thing that people remember when they walk off the 18th hole is the par-3 17th hole, which features a downhill tee shot to a large apple-shaped green. The tee shot might be a little intimidating as you stand on the elevated tee box, but the green is large.

There are plenty of places that offer a great fall retreat, but the Apple Tree Golf Club in Yakima, Wash. might be right at the top of the list. With its 18-hole championship course, plenty of challenges along the way and the worldfamous apple-shaped green, Apple Tree Golf Course has just about everything the traveling golfer is looking for. when planning a fall trip.

all golf trips are always the perfect idea. The weather is still good with warm temperatures and the sun usually finds a way to keep showing up through September and October.

In previous years, a big Halloween event has taken place at Glendoveer which provided a safe, dry place for local kids to trick or treat in the “Haunted Forest” also known as the cart barn.

The 18-hole West at Glendoveer opened in 1928. Designed by Frank Stenzel, West at Glendoveer Golf Course measures 5,922 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 115 and a 67.2 USGA rating. The course features three sets of tees for different skill levels.

But there is much more than golf at Glendoveer - and the fall months are a perfect time to see what the facility has in store for golfers, walkers and anyone else who enjoys the outdoors. There is a two-mile nature trail which rings the outside of the golf course, making a perfect walk any time of the day. There are four indoor tennis courts on site. There is plenty to like. Now, there is even more. Von Ebert Brewing has opened a location in the old Ringside Restaurant next to the clubhouse at Glendoveer. Von Ebert’s new location at Glendoveer will feature a variety of beers.

Anytime is a terrific time for activities at Glendoveer, but in the fall with the different colors and various things to do, this might just be the perfect time to see what Glendoveer has to offer on and off the golf course.

The 18-hole East at Glendoveer opened in 1923. Designed by John Junor, East at Glendoveer Golf Course measures 6,295 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 123 and a 68.5 USGA rating. The course features three sets of tees for different skill levels.

he city of Portland has some terrific fall golf, but none more so than at Glendoveer Golf & Tennis in east Portland, home of two championship golf courses. There is plenty to like about Glendoveer with its two courses and challenging layout.

And in the past, Glendoveer Golf Course has hosted the Nike NXN event which is Nike’s high school national cross country championships.

ust 45 miles shy of the Canadian border, an hour-and-a-half drive north of Spokane sits the town of Colville, Washington, site of this month’s NW Golf Trekker visit. Once a thriving gold and silver mining community, the population today is roughly 5,000 in the town surrounded by the beauty, forested hills and mountains of the upper Columbia River region.

DARIN PATZER NW Golf Trekker

My playing pals for this early July escapade were my wife, Natalie, and her newly retired dad, Gene. We approached the Dominion Meadows golf course from the east, passing directly through the Colville National Forest in the vicinity of the Idaho State line, which must truly be considered God’s Country. The more direct route from Spokane also presents a delightful drive through timbered mountains and lakes.

Greeting us in the clubhouse was one of the hardest working head professionals I’ve met in the industry, Andy Hite. Charismatic and affable, Andy has had a career in golf since 1990, and for many of those years he’s been a one-man crew, holding down not only the clubhouse and the Just Rip It golf shop, but also picking up a shovel and rake and assisting superintendent Enzo Combs and a team of volunteers .

I once raised the eyebrows of a player from the southern states when I referred to golf as a “season,” but it is true that Pacific NW golfers tolerate a relatively short golfing season, even more so at latitudes near the Canadian border. But on

After we’d played a few holes, Head Pro Andy came to check on us and pointed out some of the recent renovations being completed on the course. Anyone who works on yard sprinklers would be impressed as Dominion Meadows has undergone an ambitious grounds improvement project, recently adding 280 sprinkler heads, 40 new bunkers, and acres of newly cut and planted sod, so fresh the seams were still visible. Thirteen newly fashioned teeboxes, and a very unique bunker which was designed and hand-cut to match the exact shape of the mountain overlooking the course.

a recent land donation by two generous families in the community completed ownership of the full course. Andy shared that the reason he wears so many hats is that a shoe-string annual staffing budget of $70,000 is used to man the full course operations.

A sign hanging in the clubhouse prominently displays the astonishing course record for a par 72 course. Andy’s son Justin - who assists his dad at the clubhouse - shot a club record 59 in winning a tournament - a score which will likely stand the test of time. For his part, Andy has a career highlight of being a finalist in the National Long-Drive Contest hosted in Florida, with his personal best competitive long drive recorded at 393 yards.

Justin and Andy Hite (Head Pro)

this day, we were fortunate to tee off underneath delightful 80-degree sun, mixed with puffy cumulus clouds which kept us company as they drifted lazily past.

“Golf is hard” is our running joke tossed back and forth as encouragement anytime someone chokes. At one point, Natalie, the gentle-mannered music-teacher had us howling in mirth as she let out a string of choice

As we plodded along hole-by-hole, Gene, a humble guy always with a smile and laugh at the ready, showed off his preference and mastery of approach shots utilizing his fairway wood. Where most players would use an iron, Gene continued to amaze us with his ability to properly gauge and stop his low-trajectory approach shots to the greens.

"It was named ‘Golf’ because all of the other 4-letter words were taken.”

Natalie, my lovely wife of 24-years, has grown to enjoy golf more as she is given opportunities to play in scrambles and other events, but still plays at most a couple of times a year, and admittedly would much rather spend an afternoon shopping. Her dad - with the golf-friendly last name - Gene Hook, after spending many years working in Michigan’s petroleum industry to provide for his family (most recently as a design estimator), settled with his wife here in Eastern Washington to be near his grandkids. Being athletic and fit, Gene promptly jump-started his softball career by joining a senior league and also is one of my most faithful golf partners.

Due to the day’s course maintenance, our group of three duffers had been re-routed to play the back nine first, and as we eventually made the turn we enjoyed hole one which features a significant drop-off from tee to green, a reachable 250 yards away. Hitting from an elevated teebox is always something I find exhilarating, watching the golf ball soar down from atop a hill. But what goes down must come back up, and hole two comes quickly calling with payback, a par three with significant uphill carry and approach.

Tossing out a first-tee apology, “anything hit past the lady’s tees is a win,” I surprised myself with an opening drive sailing straight down the middle of the fairway. With dreams of starting off with a birdie or par – a little house money – alas, my putt slid by and I tapped in for an opening bogey. A theme that would continue throughout this day, as I watched my usually reliable putter not drop one putt outside of five feet, in spite of the beautifully groomed greens.

9NORTHWEST GOLF + TRAVEL

Dominion Meadows - originally named Elk’s Golf Course - was built in 1948 by the Colville Athletic Club on the historic site of an old brickyard, under the shadow of the mountain that lends the course its current name, Old Dominion. For most of its years, eleven of the course’s holes were owned, while the land for the other seven holes was leased, until

As we teed off, we noted with irony that being the week of Independence Day, we had unwittingly chosen to each play separately from the red, white and blue tee-boxes, patriotically. I elected the blues due to the length being close to a standard course’s length and rating (69.3/120), though a further back teebox is also an option for the long drivers, at 6,511 total yards. Calculating the math, an average golf course measures about a three to four mile walk - as the crow flies - but alas, the golf ball seldom flies like a crow. At times, my golf ball resembles more of a drunk hummingbird, zipping this way and that.

Natalie celebrating her birdie chip-in

words one after another in rapid-fire succession, each word competing with the others to express rage at her golf ball’s latest insubordination. We listened empathetically, knowing such is the depth and passion of feeling which golf can bring out in even the most virtuous souls. My mind sauntered back a few years to an infamous day I played with another rela-tic known to have a short fuse. On that day, our group watched in half-horror/half-suppressed glee as after a chunked shot Cousin threw a newly purchased iron into a tree. Unfortunately, the tree was in no mood to return the club. Still to this day, a lonely 6-iron may be gently swaying in the branches of a Michigan weeping willow.

Winding down our round (on the front nine), we watched airplanes

puttering along the runway adjacent to the fifth and sixth fairways. Then found the seventh and eighth holes to be challenging doglegs, with precision needed, being guarded on both sides by rushes and ponds. As we neared the closing holes of the par-72 course we looked at our pace and saw that riding Dominion Meadow’s cutting-edge GPS carts, we were likely to finish our round in under four hours. Speed of play, another of the benefits of playing country golf outside of the busy metro areas. Clinging to one of my better rounds of the past few years up to the last couple of holes, alas, my putter let me down one last time and I three-putted away a chance to break 40, finishing with an 82. My redeeming highlight being a chip-in eagle of my own on a late hole –matching length chip-ins on the same day for both my wife and I - a rare memory to take with us from Dominion Meadows.

Being a first-time visitor, I was expecting a simple course out in the countryside and hadn’t realized Dominion Meadows is quietly becoming destination golf. With reasonable green fees of $30 or less, golf-trekkers are invited to come enjoy an adventure with waterfowl, natural preserves and mountain views. A worthy daytrip to visit Northeast Washington’s God’s Country.

For myself, in spite of my putter turning against me, I’d managed to hold together a respectable 42 on the front nine, but by far the excitement of the day came on the 16th hole. A short, picturesque par three guarded by a wetland pond and bullrushes. Teeing off first, I didn’t hit cleanly enough to carry the wetlands and had to take a penalty. While searching for my ball, a shriek was heard, and we watched in dumbfounded amazement as Natalie - the novice among us – chipping from 35-yards, saw her ball take a couple of perfect bounces, strike the pin …and fall crisply into the hole! It was a thrill for all of us to experience her joy over a simultaneous first time ever lifetime birdie and chip-in!

EDITORS AT All Golf Idaho

The “Cruel 18” ends this month with holes 14-18 of the most challenging golf Idaho has to offer.

• All holes are measured from the tips.

You can read about the first three holes here and holes 4-8 here, and holes 9-13 here.

• The Cruel 18 must feature an even mix of holes in order to accurately simulate a real course.

14

COEUR d’ALENE, Idaho – The idyllic floating green draws golfers from all over the world, but the tee shot leaves very little margin for error.

• No course can be featured more than once on the Cruel 18.

• A solid representation should be given throughout the state.

12 NORTHWEST GOLF + TRAVEL

Let's take a look at the parameters for holes to qualify:

• To gain consideration as the opening (1st) hole on the Cruel 18, the hole must be the opening (1st) hole at its respective course, and so on throughout the round.

• Coeur d’Alene Resort 203-yard Par 3: Does the 14th always play this long to the world famous floating green at Coeur d’Alene Resort? No. In fact, the distance changes daily. Is the green huge? Yes. But it doesn’t matter how big the green is whenever a shot - which will almost surely be into the prevailing wind off the lake - will find itself resting on the bottom of Lake Coeur d’Alene if it misses the target. The one luxury is the flower beds surrounding the green allow for a free drop. The target really is quite large, but it’s easy to get caught up in the sheer beauty of the hole and forget that you need a crisp iron shot to find land. You won’t be alone if you end up playing from the drop area after donating a ball into the deep blue waters.

15

16

• Quail Hollow Golf Course (Boise) 521-Yard Par 5: Designed by renowned architects Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge, Quail Hollow offers a target golf experience like no other found in Idaho. Carved through the canyons and foothills of Boise, nearly every hole is unique at Quail Hollow and none more potentially deadly than the 16th. Not overpowering in length, your approach shot(s) on 16 needs to be well thought out. If you’re going for the green in two, you’ll often be faced with a near impossible angle to a green so narrow it will make your alma mater’s hallways seem as wide as the Grand Canyon. Anything short will end up rolling into a ravine, while shots that go long will find the sage brush covered waste area. Laying up, however, is no easy task. Five fairway bunkers bisect the fairway leaving a narrow landing area to hit before hitting to a green that can vary two clubs lengths either side of the middle depending on the pin placement. Good luck, your mental and physical game is going to need it!

BOISE – The second (or third) shot into the par-5 16th at Quail Hollow plays into this extremely shallow green.

• Pinecrest Golf Course (Idaho Falls) 440-Yard Par 4: Undoubtedly you’ve heard the phrase “older than dirt” when referring to the antique age of something or someone. Well, if you were around to see Pinecrest go in, you aren’t much younger than dirt! Opened in 1936, Pinecrest is arguably the finest municipal course in the state and has been the host of every major tournament in Idaho throughout its history. With tall pine trees and long rough lining both sides of the fairway and Yellowstone Highway roaring along the right o.b. line, the pressure of the 15th hole is being able to execute an accurate drive. So break out your new hybrid club or whatever you can hit 200+ yards and straight because anything out of the fairway will almost surely result in a bogey or worse since little to no forgiveness is offered. If you manage to hit the fairway, good luck on the long approach shot to another one of Pinecrest's dastardly small greens.

13NORTHWEST GOLF + TRAVEL

KUNA, Idaho - The long carry over water to the par-5 18th green at Falcon Crest is downright scary.

NAMPA, Idaho – The par-4 17th at Ridgecrest with is severe elevation and sloped is perhaps the most infamous golf hole in Idaho – period.

14 NORTHWEST GOLF + TRAVEL

17

• Ridgecrest Golf Club (Nampa, ID) 417-Yard Par 4: One member of our panel voted to remove this hole from the Cruel 18 … and have it blown up! The 17th at Ridgecrest has been labeled as almost unfair due to the elevation climb coupled with a severely sloped green from back to front, but that is the essence of the Cruel 18. There’s a true story of a player reaching the green in 2 but carding a 13 in a tournament after his putt rolled off the front of the green. Scary! A drive of 250+ yards from the regular tees is required to reach a flattish portion of the fairway between the fairway bunker and trees on the right side. The severe uphill approach is at least a three club difference from the yardage. The green is very shallow, but fairly wide. If your approach is short of the green, you may find it rolling back down to you. If your approach goes long into the bunker behind the green or even to the back of the putting surface, you will need deft touch to keep your next shot from going off the front of the green and back down the hill. This hole very well may take the honor as the nastiest hole on the Cruel 18!

18

• Falcon Crest Golf Club (Kuna, ID) 479-Yard Par 4: This is - by far - the cruelest and best finishing hole in the state! A dramatic ending awaits you at Falcon Crest’s 18th hole. A large lake looms between your drive and the green. Even the best of tee shots can’t get any closer than 160-170 yards due to the large lake that looms between your approach shot and the green that is tightly tucked to the water. Many players will find themselves over 200 yards out and potentially in some long rough. If you are in the latter category, a bail out is provided along the left side of the lake, allowing you to use three shots to get to the green. However, if you’re going for the green in regulation, make sure to take enough club because there is plenty of room on the hill behind the green. Tournaments at Falcon Crest are never over until all players have navigated our final, most cruel, golf hole.

This is a program that Prante had long to start when she first arrived at Salish five years ago. Her father Tim’s side of the family is Native American with roots from the Muscogee Tribe in Oklahoma. She felt a connection with the Squaxin Island Tribe when she landed the job.

Prante has taught the basics to the kids from stance and posture to grip and swing. She has also involved the Tribal Police on many of the sessions because she wants the kids to be familiar with the officers and know them when they see them in the community they live in. She has some long range hopes that some of kids might find their way into the golf business or become employees at Salish Cliffs Golf Club.

Oncenter.this day, Prante had three kids fine tuning their games with Julian, Wyatt and Jackie all looking for words of wisdom. Prante works with the kids once a week, throw some competition games at them and rewards them with prizes from gift cards to video games. And after the range session, they head inside the clubhouse for some lunch.

“Now when I drive to the rec center to pick them up, I get swarmed by kids wanting to play golf,” she said. “My goal is to get these kids into the game and stick with it. I find all of this so exciting and incredibly rewarding. I am grateful for the support from the Little Creek Casino Resort for their support of the youth.”

Redstone puts on several tournaments, highlighted by the fun “Fly Wide Open” tournament the third week of September. The gala event is a popular extension of Jeff’s working philosophy: “we want you to come to Redstone with a smile on your face and make sure it’s that way when you leave.”

Golf has been played here for 100 years; the historic clubhouse is 100 years old. Redstone has four sets of tees: 6863 yards (128/72.8) from the tips to 4879 yards (100/63.4) with the forward tees. Bruce says, “The front nine is Dr. Jekyll to the back nine’s Mr. Hyde. The front nine is a little more subdued; everything is laid out for you and you can score. The back nine is Mr. Hyde, and you’d better hide, because it’s going to eat you! Plus, you’re basically hiding on every single hole, since it’s cut out of the mountainside.”

Jeff Bruce advises Redstone’s challengers: “This course has teeth if you don’t hit it in the right place; the backside is cut out of the mountains and you don’t get a feeling of being rushed or crowded; every hole you are literally by yourself…the course topography features lots of up and downhill lies. The reason to come to play Redstone? Scenery and weather—you get away from extreme heat in the summer and it’s nice through September—it’s an excellent choice for stay and play.”

Students under 13 golf for free, and Redstone offers men’s and ladies’ night. Membership is growing to over 300, and there are clinics offered in May and June. The course also has a stay and play agreement with Prestige, an excellent hotel in Rossland with outstanding cuisine.

Bruce advises a game plan to “swing easy so you can see the flag; know where it is. His choices for toughest hole? “High handicapper: #10—419 yards, par 4; me, personally: #5, 238-yards, par 3—Even if you don’t play the black tees, take a moment to drive your cart to the elevated #11 (627-yard par 5) tee and take a picture; in the fall you can see all the way to the Columbia River. It's a 240-yard carry to the fairway—hit a drive and watch it disappear into the canyon and then move on to the white tees.”

“There are two things in the defining architectural element of this course: first, it’s a visual delight. Second, it rewards well-executed golf

There are lots of challenges on an alpine course, but it’s especially important to avoid blind shots. There are no blind shots on the course. Around the greens, it’s not overly difficult but you have to be careful to avoid long putts. From tee to green, this course is a test that will make golfers want to come back.”

IN HIS OWN WORDS: LES FURBER’S DESIGN OF REDSTONE

environment has challenges but an alpine course is challenging because you want to avoid too many uphill shots and maximize downhill or relatively flat shots. I think we achieved this at Redstone. We also preserved the natural beauty of this stunning location.

In addition to golfers, Redstone has attracted homeowners who have chosen Redstone for their primary or vacation home. The historic clubhouse offers classic pub fare and the resort can host weddings and banquets. The course is semi-private, offering membership opportunities and public play.
