Ron DeSantis Mocks LGBTQ+ People in Campaign Mailer By David Vandygriff

Florida’s Republican governor is continuing his assault on the LGBTQ+ community. This time, he’s using a campaign mailer to mock nonbinary people ahead of next week’s elections. The campaign document uses slick disinformation about DeSantis’ Democratic opponent, Charlie Crist, including the claim that President Joe Biden’s student loan plan would force “hard-working Floridians to pay back student loans for degrees like Gender Studies and French Poetry.” HuffPost received the mailer from a person in Fort Lauderdale. The outlet reports that it shows a photo of Crist and Biden hugging with the text, “The Biden-Crist College Loan Bailout will: Make inflation worse; Punish hard-working taxpayers; Reward universities.”

The flier also includes a photo of a nonbinary student wearing makeup and wearing a graduation gown, with a cartoon bubble overhead that reads, “Thank you, Joe Biden and Charlie Crist, for making Floridians pay off my student debt.” HuffPost reports that the

“These extremists are hellbent on returning us to the darkest days of anti-LGBTQ hysteria that fueled discrimination, bigotry, and violence against the community,” he continued. “The war

The Advocate reviewed available Getty images and discovered that the photo is a series of graduation photos taken not in Florida but in Brazil. "The queerphobia coming out of today’s Republican Party is so sad and disgusting," tweeted Florida Rep. Anna V. Eskamani with the images of the flier. "Their desperation to rebrand President Biden’s student loan debt reform efforts are also pathetic." “That this ad and others like it are running in 2022, not 1970, tells us the kind of future envisioned by DeSantis and his right -wing cronies,” Brandon Wolf, press secretary for Equality Florida, told HuffPost.

up with love for our beautiful LGBTQ+ community." Despite the fear and financial burden the attack caused, Lewis says one thing is certain: The vandals won't like that they inspired hundreds of acts of love. Since the attack became public, she says the attention the story has received has been unlike anything she could have expected. "It's gone viral because even as I'm sitting here at my laptop, every several times a minute, I'm getting a notification that we've gotten another donation," she says. "And we're probably getting close to 500 donations, individual donations since this happened. And we've gotten donations locally, but we've also gotten donations around the state and the country. We've had a few come in from the West Coast today that I noticed. We had one come in from Germany." Lewis says it's heartening to see the outpouring of support the center has received, regardless of whether they are from the LGBTQ+ community or allies. "People are angry that this happened. People love the queer community here, whether part of it or allied with it. I think we have that support from them, and they're spreading the word far and wide, and it is coming back to us." Country Singer Sam Williams Officially Comes Out As Gay By Jamie Hodges

Country singer Sam Williams is opening up about his sexuality for the first time — with a sweet music video to go along with it. Earlier this month, the singer released a music video for his song “Tilted Crown,” which sees him struggling with the generational pressures of his identity (he’s the son of Hank Williams, Jr.) and kissing his real-life boyfriend.

admitting: “I felt like I was promoting invisibility, like I wasn’t being visible and wasn’t being myself. And I just thought it was the perfect opportunity to just show who I was.” Williams further explained that although he has been out in his personal life and with his label, he hadn’t really talked about his sexuality publicly before — until now.

Although more LGBTQ+ country singers have slowly been coming out in recent years, being so open about being gay in that world is still a rarity, and Williams hopes his honesty will help kids in the next generation who might be struggling with who they are.

“If I was a kid, and I was younger, and I saw somebody like myself doing an interview He opened up about the “I identify as gay,” he clarified, like this and just saying that, decision to bring his personal “and I’ve never said that to ‘This is who I am and I’m proud life into the spotlight in that way anybody else… And it is scary, to be who I am,’ that would during a recent episode of but it feels good.” have been impactful for me,” Proud Radio with Hunter Kelly, he said.

Queer Eye’s Tan France Hit With ‘Venomous’ Abuse For Simply Feeding His Child By Brett Nunes

Tan France says he has been hit with “venom” and made to feel “guilty” for feeding his newborn baby with formula instead of breast milk. In an Instagram video to mark National Breastfeeding Month in August, France, 39, spoke about the pressures new parents face when it comes to feeding. He explained that while he believes breast milk is the “gold standard”, it is put on a “social pedestal” which can make parents feel “guilty” about the way they feed their child. Since then, the Queer Eye presenter, who welcomed son Ismail with husband Rob on 10 July, has been inundated with abusive messages. “Almost every one [of my direct messages] was filled with such venom,” France told the We Are Family podcast. “Obviously I’m in a very interesting position where when

16 www.jaxgaycom

we say that we’re having a baby, a lot of people have an opinion on how we’re having a baby, and how we will feed our baby.” He added strangers had asked him whether he would be feeding his baby with breast milk, which made him uncomfortable.

that I am the best dad that I can possibly be, because people look up to those who are hopefully paving the way for them. “Let’s start by sharing and supporting every kind of feeding journey… no one should ever feel guilty for feeding their baby formula.”

“I want to make it clear to everyone listening: I 100 per cent believe that breast milk is the gold standard, so does Bobbie. We all understand that. If I could breastfeed my child, 100 per cent I would,” he said. “I can’t… therefore, I need to not be shamed for that.” In his August video, France said that he wanted to use his profile to support other new parents. “There hasn’t really been somebody like me on a global platform before,” he said. “I know that there’s also the added pressure to make sure

The fashion guru told NPR in 2019 that he has always wanted to be a father, and still wants to have a big family. “I’ve wanted children since I was 19/20. If I’d had a stable relationship at that time, I would have desperately tried to have children,” he said. “I was going to be a stay-athome dad, which is something I’ve wanted for many, many, many years. And so that was the plan. “And I actually – crazily, I still want six. I don’t know if that’s going to happen, but yeah, I still want six children.”

Tumblr to Allow Nude Images; 'Sexually Explicit' Ones Still Not OK By Jonathon Sappington

Blogging site Tumblr will now allow images of nudity, the company announced Tuesday in conjunction with an update to its community guidelines. “We now welcome a broader range of expression, creativity, and art on Tumblr, including content depicting the human form (yes, that includes the naked human form),” the announcement reads. The site, however, will continue to prohibit “visual depictions of sexually explicit acts,” along with “hate, spam, violent threats, or anything illegal,” the company notes. The decision to allow nudity comes after Tumblr announced in September that it was instituting community labels that let users filter the content they viewed. “It was our first step

18 www.jaxgay.com

toward a more open Tumblr,” the Tuesday announcement explains. Tumblr still bans depictions of sex acts because of logistical problems. “Tumblr used to have a policy around porn that was literally ‘Go nuts, show nuts. Whatever,’” Matt Mullenweg, CEO of parent company Automattic, explained in a September post. “That was memorable and hilarious, and for many people, Tumblr both hosted and helped with the discovery of a unique type of adult content.” Tumblr, which allows users to post multimedia content to its blogs, previously had been an online resource for many in the porn, LGBTQ, kink, and queer artist communities since its founding in 2007.

In 2018, when Verizon owned Tumblr, it banned much adult content. Now Automattic is opening that up a bit, but allowing certain sexually explicit material runs isn’t feasible because credit card companies and app stores won’t serve sites that have any content that would be considered pornographic, Mullenweg wrote. He explained that it is also impossible to verify that everyone who sees that content is of legal age and has consented to view it. “I am personally extremely libertarian in terms of what consenting adults should be able to share, and I agree with ‘go nuts, show nuts’ in principle, but the casually porn-friendly era of the early internet is currently impossible,” the CEO noted at the time.

14 Gifts Gay Men Actually Want Santa To Bring By Zachary Massengill

Christmas is right around the corner, and while sweaters and wine make for okay gifts, here are 14 presents gay man could actually use!

1. An endless supply of Underwear—Jock straps, Speedos, thongs. A new, and flashy, pair for each day of the year would be amazing!

5. A home gym Fully stocked with free weights, a squat rack, ellipticals, treadmills, cable machines, the works.

3. Acne cream that actually works Not one that kind of works. Not one that your friend swears by. One that actually works for you consistently. 6. A smart, funny, sexy, caring, introspective boyfriend Who also loves you unconditionally and thinks you're the best thing to ever happen to humankind. (Is that too much to ask for??) 4. To end homophobia and institutionalized oppression Wouldn’t that be just a nice little treat to have for Christmas? The end of bigotry?

2. To have your friends admit once and for all that you are the Samantha of the group For the love of God, you are not Miranda! I don’t know why they keep telling you that! 20 www.jaxgay.com

7. Gay fiction that’s not cliché and poorly-written Okay, not to shit on all gay fiction, but I want to see a male romance story that doesn't

have the same old coming out tropes. I want a love story between two men that didn't seem like it was written by a middle schooler. I want gay fiction that’s telling an untold story!

8. A full bar that magically restocks itself Wine, whiskey, beer, vodka, gin, schnapps—you name it, it’s there!

9. A lifetime supply of condoms and lube A lifetime supply of pleasure and protection! (Cuz God knows that stuff ain’t cheap!)

10. To no longer fear rejection To have confidence that slightly borders on arrogance. To be able to go up to a guy, get rejected, and know that you are still smart, talented, funny, and beautiful.

13. A cute little puppy you can give to someone else when he’s too much work You want a puppy, but you also know that you can’t handle Spot all day. So for Christmas, you want a professional dog nanny you can hand off Spot to when you need a break. 11. To stop being prude Or slut-shamed Why do we hate on other gay men? Why do we judge other people’s sexual activities? We’re all on the same team here. It would be nice to no longer be shamed by other gay men. 14. Joggers Have you seen these? They are the coolest combination of comfort and fashion. Why wouldn’t a gay man want one (or five) pairs from Santa?!

12. One of those ridiculous dildos Now that we've already got "get rid of slut-shaming" as one of our gifts, we'll want one of those super expensive dildos that are better than the real thing. I’m talking vibrating, glow -in-the-dark, everything.

Ben Platt Reflects On 'Disappointing' Dear Evan Hansen Movie Response By Brenda Williams

Ben Platt has finally opened up about the negative reaction across social media to the movie adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen, and how it impacted his overall mental health. Although the stage musical was well-loved by Broadway enthusiasts, the film version of Dear Evan Hansen did not receive the same adoration for a variety of reasons. From the moment the trailer was released, people online started commenting on how bizarre it was that Platt, who also originated the role on Broadway, was playing a high schooler despite the actor being in his late 20s. That in and of itself isn’t necessarily uncommon, but with Platt, it simply didn’t work. Add on the fact that so many members of the general public suddenly learned that Dear Evan Hansen was not, in fact, a queer story as many had assumed. Ultimately, the film seemed doomed before it even hit theaters. Once it did, the reviews from critics were fairly scathing. Criticisms of the film itself 24 www.jaxgay.com

aside, Platt previously brushed off people commenting about his age in the film, suggesting that they should watch Grease – which very blatantly has older adults playing teen roles. More recently, though, he admitted to The New York Times that the whole thing was “definitely a disappointing experience,” and one that opened his eyes “to the internet and how horrific it can be.” Having a movie or acting performance dunked on by the internet is extremely common in the age of social media, and something that all successful creatives eventually have to learn to deal with. For Platt, that meant leaving Twitter altogether and focusing on fans who felt like Dear Evan Hansen resonated with them. “I find that Twitter is almost exclusively for tearing people down,” he said. “It is very easy for the good to get drowned out by the bad.” So to any fans hoping the actor might pop back up on Twitter anytime soon... it looks like you're out of luck. But sometimes, keeping a communication barrier up

between the general public and the people making movies is the best call — especially when those movies are anything like Dear Evan Hansen.

The lawsuit calls for Barr to be reinstated for a declaratory judgement acknowledging that her First and 14th Amendment rights were violated, for compensatory damages and attorneys’ fees, and for the district to purge any records of her dismissal. It follows Georgia’s new Parents’ Bill of Rights coming into effect in July. The bill enables parents the “right to review all instructional material

intended for use in the classroom of his or her minor child”. Bryan County School has not commented. It comes as two volumes from the Heartstopper graphic novel series are at the centre of a battle to get a Michigan library defunded over LGBTQ+ books. Conservatives have used book banning as a weapon to crack down on LGBTQ+ content in libraries and schools. A study found four in 10 (41 per cent) books banned in US schools during the 2021-22 school year contained LGBTQ+ themes or characters.

Jinkx Monsoon's Sketchy Queens TV Show Renewed For Season 2 By David Vandygriff

“I see you and I hear you.” World of Wonder has officially renewed Jinkx Monsoon’s sketch comedy series Sketchy Queens for a second season. The new season is slated to premiere in 2023. Monsoon’s Sketchy Queens partner, Liam Krug, will also return for season two. “Liam and I are so thrilled to start the long, hilarious, disjointed process that goes into creating another season of Sketchy Queens!” Monsoon wrote in a statement. The All Stars 7 winner continued, “Sketchy Queens season two is going to be bigger and more wild – with more celebrity guests and plenty of that dry, esoteric wit we’re so damn proud of. We’re

28 www.jaxgay.com

grateful to World of Wonder for believing in our show and allowing us true creative freedom. Thank you for watching, and here’s to more!" Over the course of its first season, Sketchy Queens featured Monsoon and Krug in hilarious segments such as the chaotic “I See You and I Hear You” talk show, the phone call exchanges between Jennifer Coolidge and Jennifer Tilly, and Monsoon reprising her Snatch Game performance of Little Edie from RuPaul’s Drag Race season five. Season one of Sketchy Queens also featured guest appearances from the likes of Trixie Mattel, Katya, Raja, Brittany Broski, and Brandon Rogers, to name a few. For season two, Sketchy Queens

“promises to continue to surprise audiences with cameos from your favorite queens and comedians.” World of Wonder cofounders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato wrote, “This series had us all in stitches, and the WOWPP audience can’t get enough! Who knew Jinkx Monsoon was such a Sketchy Queen? Turns out everyone knows now!” We’re already eagerly anticipating this second season of Sketchy Queens to see the Queen of All Queens doing what she does best. 2023 couldn’t come quickly enough! All episodes of Sketchy Queens season one are now streaming on WOW Presents Plus.

ACLU Tells Michigan Schools To Reverse Book Bans By Andrew Walker

Across the country, school boards are implementing bans on books they deem "inappropriate." Ahead of next week's midterm elections, the ACLU has penned a letter to Michigan school districts urging them to restore access to restricted materials. According to the letter, complaints from parents have swayed several Michigan schools to remove "highly acclaimed" books from school libraries and classrooms, an effort the ACLU calls "harmful and misguided." Alongside restrictions on discussion of sexuality in classrooms, the wave of book bans largely targets information surrounding LGBTQ+ identities. In fact, voters in Jamestown Township, located near Grand Rapids, recently decided to defund their public library because of their queer materials. Jay Kaplan, attorney at the ACLU of Michigan's LGBTQ+ Rights Project, said in a statement via the Detroit Free Press that book bans are an attack on First Amendment rights, 32 www.jaxgay.com

especially in schools. "In addition to threatening the First Amendment rights of all students, this wave of book-banning is an attack on LGTBQ+ children and their families, and it must be stopped," Kaplan elaborated. "For countless youth who face bullying, isolation, and depression, access to LGBTQ+ representation or information in books and literature can be a refuge — and in some cases lifesaving. School libraries are places where young people should be able to learn about themselves and people who are different from themselves, not denied access to the diverse perspectives that books and literature offer us all.” Jonathan Friedman of Pen America previously said that a common strategy among conservatives is to send groups of parents to school board meetings to pressure officials into banning books. In some cases, they use intimidation. The ACLU's letter to hundreds of Michigan school leaders explains: "And when books can be removed based on parents’ complaints about the author’s

message or point of view, it paves the way for an unending series of attempts by one group or another to cleanse a school of reading material based on what a vocal faction finds objectionable. In the end, schools become another arena for political warfare, rather than a space of learning for our youth. Neither students nor their communities are well- served by this practice." The letter urged school boards to "resist any attempts to remove books from your school libraries" and "restore students’ access to all censored materials as soon as possible." To not do so, the ACLU says, would be an implicit threat to Democracy. "In debating whether to allow students to check out a controversial book from the school library, it is easy to lose sight of the overarching function of our schools: to train young people to think for themselves," it reads. "When school officials attempt to create a 'sanitized' learning space by eliminating controversial texts from school libraries, they undermine this critical function of public education."

The state has asked the court to dismiss the suit, but the court has not ruled on that yet.
