THE NASHVILLE CIVIC DESIGN CENTER (NCDC) is pleased to present an overview of the NCDC’s work from fiscal year 2012; July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. Your support remains critical as we continue to carry out our mission of helping envision the future of Nashville. The Nashville Civic Design Center exists because design matters. Great design is at the core of a dynamic city. It fosters great neighborhoods and parks, locates ideal places for art, and creates streets where pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and public transit users can harmoniously coexist. Good design can help reduce obesity rates, and improve our health and healing; it can engage youth, and even revitalize economies. Design matters, and it is our mission to encourage quality design in our community. FYE 2012 marked a very exciting time at the NCDC. We deeply appreciate your continued support, and more importantly, the future citizens of Nashville/Middle Tennessee will doubly appreciate the time, energy and talent you bring to the thoughtful growth of our city and region. We invite you to renew your membership and “come on down” for a visit! FYE 2013 is off to a fabulous start and we look forward to sharing it with you. Best,
Julia Landstreet Executive Director
Gary Gaston Design Director
The Nashville Civic Design Center is twelve years old. The leadership and participation of many in our community have contributed to our growth, maturity, impact and influence. This past year the NCDC has focused primarily on “healthy community” issues, large and small, especially in relation to the impact of the built environment on public and individual health. We know that better design and planning of civic spaces, public infrastructure and neighborhoods greatly contributes to individual health, quality of life and a healthier, more productive population. One of the NCDC’s goals is to make Nashville a model of smart planning and design as we develop and redevelop in terms of public spaces, transportation, healthy community options, and sustainability – all in the most economically feasible manner. As we succeed, the Nashville community will be more vibrant, healthy, productive and better connected than ever, assuring a better future for all who live, work, or play in our city. The NCDC serves as a catalyst in this mission. The NCDC Staff and Board of Directors appreciate your participation in the LTPON Annual Luncheon and support of the NCDC and its programs. We hope that this Annual Report ratifies that support and assures your participation in the NCDC’s future. Sincerely,
The shape we give our city in turn shapes us.
Larry Papel, NCDC Board President
