The program of a drug rehabilitation center offers conditions ripe for philosophical inquiry. The time spent in such an institution represents a pivotal moment for an addict, heavy with the traumatic personal experience that each patient brings to this place. These personal experiences become the backdrop and lens for the experience of the institution. Spatial devices borrowed from Baroque art and architecture become illustrative of the sublimity of the patients’ condition, where conflicts of free-will vs. institutional control, nature vs. construct battle for a resolution that may never be actualized. The architecture becomes an elastic stage, to be shaped and colored with the contradictory nature of the rehabilitation process.

The Reception Entry as seen upon arrival-- the drama of the patient’s experience is expressed in the architecture, which takes on contrasting degrees of light/dark, open/close, expansion/compression, control/freedom, all corresponding to the program. These contrasts mirror the conflicts within the individual. The architecture embodies the self, and the embodied self is sublime.

A hypothetical think tank is constructed in the guise of the expansion of the 66th St and Broadway’s subway station into a shopping corridor. The public face of the University protrudes out across the intersection, as its covert counterpart lies behind the walls of the shopping corridor, wrapping under and around the subway line, weaving the ultra private with the ultra public.

Intersecting bands create a structural system, where moments of spanning and touchdown divide program, defining light and space. Merging into the ground creates paths which run over and through the building, drawing the public into the university.

massing study
High-rises often represent a force of globalization imposing a uniform style of steel and glass like a franchise upon other cultures. This project seeks to consider vernacular Mexican culture in a high-rise for Mexico City on the current site of Torre Major.
