FUTURESCAPE
GREAT YARMOUTH
YEAR: 2020
Advertisement
TYPE: University Project LOCATION: Great Yarmouth, Norfolk Group Project
The Great Yarmouth Futurescape proposal is informed by an analysis of the towns issues, ambitions and potential, resulting in a realisation of its latent sustainable and radical visionary future. The proposal builds on the entities currently serving as the lifeblood of the community: the energy and offshore oil industries, and the town’s stagnating leisure and tourism industries.
To mitigate the effects of the impending rising sea levels and to extend the preservation of key heritage sites, a series of canals will be created along historical tram routes to divert the flow of water around high-risk heritage areas.

Rejuvenating Great Yarmouth
In returning Great Yarmouth to a celebrated resort for leisure and rejuvenation, the proposal capitalises on the new island formation, the town’s coastal winds and comparatively dry weather conditions to create a new international SailGP centre. This will enable the town to share tourism figures with other SailGP destinations including Sydney, San Francisco, New York, Cowes and Marseilles. SailGP is claimed to have an impact of $23 million per event in each host city, and will bring an audience of a complementary demographic and ethos to that of those living, working and learning in the new metropolis.
