euphoria - Sept. 16-19, 2021

Page 1

Feed your soul. Build our community. Experience euphoria. SEPTEMBER

euphoria has always been—and always will be—a community event. We’ve all been through a lot over the past year and a half, especially our friends in the restaurant and hospitality industries. We are incredibly grateful to finally be seeing positive signs of brighter days ahead, and we are thrilled to be able to safely bring back many of the signature euphoria events we have all come to know and love.

This year, thanks to generous contributions from our Producers Circle members, and additional funds from Local Boys Do Good, euphoria’s 501(3)(c), we are supporting Mill Village Farms’ FoodShare Greenville initiative and United Way’s OnTrack program. You can read more about what these grants will help each organization accomplish on page 19.

We were honored and humbled by the number of emails and phone calls we received from so many of you, asking if euphoria was happening this year and letting us know you’d love to participate and support us however you could. We take that as a huge compliment, and consider it a good sign that you enjoy the time you spend with us during the festival weekend. We always do our best to take care of you and show how much we value and appreciate you.

Our team has also been doing everything we can to continue to support our local restaurants, chefs, farmers, purveyors, and small businesses. Last year, we were very fortunate to receive nearly $1 million in Greenville County CARES Act funding, which we used to purchase meals from local restaurants and donate to people in need, through the Connect for Good GVL initiative. Restaurants were compensated for their food and labor costs, creating consistent revenue streams and protecting countless jobs within our local restaurant industry. Together, we distributed more than 130,000 meals to the hungry and our frontline workers.

We are so grateful for the partnerships and collaborations that make euphoria possible. You are the ones who have helped make this festival one of the best in the Southeast year after year. It always amazes us how much we can accomplish when we all work together. From day one, the mission of our nonprofit food, wine and music festival has been to shine a spotlight on Greenville’s thriving culinary and music arts scene, while also raising money to give back to the community. Through our annual grant program, we’ve financially supported more than 40 local charities that help children, provide education through music or performing arts, and work to eliminate hunger. Last year, even in the midst of a pandemic, we supported two organizations working to fight food insecurity, through a grant for United Ministries Interfaith Hospitality Network. The funds went to the “Fresh Food for Families” project, which provided local produce boxes purchased from Mill Village Farms for 20+ homeless families for an entire year.

euphoria has always been—and always will be—a community event. We are thrilled to have you join us for the 16th annual helping of euphoria, as we continue supporting our food, beverage and tourism industries. Thank you for your unwavering support. We couldn’t do this without you!

Cheers to 16 years!

Alexandra Rutland (Marketing Coordinator), Morgan Allen (Executive Director), Mary Frances McAlister (Event Coordinator) during euphoria2020

Each year, euphoria shines a spotlight on this gem of a city we are proud to call home. As much as we love bringing newcomers here to get a taste of Greenville’s magic, we’re also committed to giving back to the community in which our festival was built.

AGED TO PERFECTION. There are a few select annual events in our personal and professional lives that have become sacrosanct on our calendars. The kind where we start looking forward to next year before this year’s edition has even ended. The kind that oozes fond memories, renews long-standing and meaningful friendships, and enriches and feeds our souls. The ones that improve with age, like a fine wine. Think summer camp or family beach vacations. In Greenville, for us, it’s the arrival of euphoria. And we should know. We’ve enjoyed almost every helping, and it wouldn’t be September in Greenville without euphoria. What started as a passion project in 2006 by two local friends who have since become our friends—Table 301’s Carl Sobocinski and Grammy Award-winning musician Edwin McCain—to showcase Greenville’s burgeoning culinary and cultural scene and give back to the community they loved, has aged to perfection over the years, becoming one of the top food and wine festivals in the Southeast (and, in our minds, in the country). Where else can you hobnob with Michelin-starred chefs in an intimate setting, listen to live music in a variety of venues while sipping on award-winning wines, beers and spirits, sample tastes from dozens of chefs and pitmasters from across the state, and learn how to make classic buttermilk biscuits or a perfectly blended cocktail all in one weekend? And, to top it off, we get to share these experiences with like-minded friends and foodies who have the same passion for all things food, beverage and music.

SEPTEMBER IN GREENVILLE W I T H O U T euphoria . ” We’ve watched euphoria morph from a would-be street-party with three events into the sophisticated and thoughtfully curated world-class event that it is today. It’s like proud parents watching their child become an adult. And we couldn’t be prouder of the more than 40 events scheduled for 2021. What better way to welcome back the travel and hospitality industry after the rollercoaster ride of the previous year than with new signature events like the appropriately titled, Aged to Perfection. With a first peek at euphoria’s private select Maker’s Mark bourbon blend, tasty bites from a mix of restaurants and food trucks, and inspiring live music from Kami Ocean & The Rhythm, the weekend’s debut will undoubtedly set the tone. We can’t wait to relive Taste of the South as it makes its return to the beloved Wyche Pavilion, featuring bites from the top chefs across the Southeast and a dance party with live music from one of our euphoria faves, Steel Toe Stiletto. And Feast by the Field, another euphoria signature event, is expanding to Saturday and Sunday, giving us two days to taste our way around the concourse of Fluor Field.

Big-name chefs have always been a calling card for euphoria—we’re still in awe of visits from the likes of Thomas Keller, Guy Savoy, Curtis Duffy and Dominique Crenn—thanks to Michelin’s presence in Greenville. However, euphoria is taking it up a notch this year with seven Michelin-starred chefs heading to town to collaborate on three guest chef dinners. They’ve also put together a cookbook, featuring recipes from chefs & beverage professionals who’ve participated in the euphoria over the years, and the proceeds will go directly to their grant program. More than a dozen intimate lunches and classrooms throughout the weekend offer opportunities to learn, taste, sip and savor everything from biscuits and beer to bubble and bonbons.

So, you know where we’ll be come midSeptember. We’ll be giddy with excitement as we head back to Greenville to taste and sip, sing and dance, and reconnect with all our foodie sisters and brothers for our favorite weekend of the year. The 16th helping of euphoria. Aged to perfection. Written by Lynn & Cele Seldon

Cele and Lynn Seldon (www.seldonink.com) are freelance travel journalists who were invited to their first euphoria in 2008 by local public relations goddess, Taryn Scher. At 14 helpings and counting, they are still coming, writing, and helping to spread the euphoria love.

FOR YOU. FOR OUR COMMUNITY. FOR euphoria.

the history of euphoria euphoria was founded in 2006 by platinum-selling singer/songwriter Edwin McCain and prominent Greenville restaurateur, Table 301’s Carl Sobocinski. Even before Greenville’s famed revitalization, the pair knew that our quaint city was something to be celebrated. McCain and Sobocinski wanted others to see this potential too— and out of this desire, euphoria was born. What started as a passion project has grown into a highly-anticipated food, wine and music festival that shines a spotlight on Greenville’s thriving culinary arts scene, while raising money to pour back into the community. From tasting events, guest chef dinners and educational seminars held throughout the year - to the banner four-day festival in September featuring Michelin dinners, exclusive food & wine tastings, cooking demos, and intimate musical experiences - euphoria has become an integral part of Greenville’s tourism and restaurant industries, allowing locals and visitors alike to gather, celebrate and enjoy the best of what the city has to offer.

It’s no secret that our once-quaint little city has boiled over in popularity over the last decade. This record-breaking growth is due, in part, to the Upstate’s booming arts and culinary scene. Since 2006, we’ve had the privilege of welcoming thousands of firsttimers to Greenville each September. We’re honored that euphoria has given so many people their first taste of all the things that make the Upstate so enchanting, and we’re excited that these visitors will choose to return to our city for years to come.

 YEARS. + CHARITIES.

helping our community thrive by funding local charities

euphoria’s mission has always been to promote tourism in Greenville by creating a destination event for food, wine, and music lovers across the country. We also understand the importance of investing in our community. To make sure we’re fulfilling our mission, proceeds from euphoria are distributed in the form of direct grants by our 501(c)(3) organization, Local Boys Do Good (LBDG), to deserving Upstate charities each year. We are excited to award $16,400 to Mill Village Farms, courtesy of our 2021 Producers Circle members! These funds will support their “Fresh Out of the Box” project, which is a virtual community cooking class utilizing the fresh fruits and vegetables included in FoodShare family food boxes. The virtual community cooking show celebrates local minority owned restaurants by hosting their chefs to teach community members how to cook accessible, healthy, and culturally-relevant recipes with the ingredients received in that week’s FoodShare Box. More details can be found at millvillagefarms.org/foodshare. OnTrack Greenville is one of United Way of Greenville’s community initiatives, designed to ensure middle school students stay on track toward high school graduation and post-secondary success. The program serves more than 4000 students in Greenville County’s most vulnerable schools. With euphoria’s support, the project will continue to deepen the assistance provided to students by exposing them to the arts, enhancing their attitudes towards school, improving the social/emotional well-being of students, providing them with a positive outlet, and enhancing their abilities and interests in the arts. More details can be found at ontrackgreenville.org.

GET INVOLVED be an integrated part of euphoria

One thing’s for sure: euphoria wouldn’t be possible without our hardworking volunteers! Our events run off the dedication of our volunteers. If you’re interested in joining the food culture of Greenville and the Upstate, look no further. As a volunteer with euphoria, you’ll be immersed in a weekend of influential chefs, beverage specialists and top food critics. We host several pre-festival events that happen in the months leading up to euphoria and the weekend festival itself. We seek volunteers for both prefestival and weekend-of events. Get on the Volunteer Contact List by emailing us at volunteer@euphoriagreenville.com All volunteer shifts are claimed on a first-come, first served basis. You must be 21+ to volunteer for euphoria.
