Euphoria 2020

Page 1

FOR THE LAST FOURTEEN YEARS,

WE’VE COME TOGETHER OVER SHARED EXPERIENCES. THIS YEAR WON’T BE ANY DIFFERENT. SEPTEMBER -,

W E A R E A C O M M U N I T Y E V E N T, AND OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS U S N O W M O R E T H A N E V E R. We’ve been looking forward to the 15th anniversary of euphoria for quite some time now. We had grand plans for this year, which included huge celebrations, world-renowned & celebrity chefs, big name bands and so much more. Those particular plans will have to wait, but we are proud to say we’ve found a way to come together responsibly to celebrate and share great food, wine and music, even in the midst of a pandemic. We are a community event, and our community needs us now more than ever. So rather than cancel euphoria 2020, we made the decision to bring people together to eat, sip, listen and learn in smaller groups this year. We can assure you, the health and safety of our guests and participants is our number one priority, and we will exceed whatever recommendations and requirements are in place during euphoria weekend. We are proud to partner with several of our local restaurants and venues to help us meet these guidelines, and to set up our events in a way that allows for proper social distancing. What started as a passion project in 2006 has evolved into a highly-anticipated fourday festival. euphoria has a huge economic impact in Greenville, and a lot of our food and beverage partners are suffering right now. We are more determined than ever to stay focused on our mission to shine a spotlight on Greenville’s thriving culinary & music arts scene, while also raising money to give back to local charities.

While this isn’t necessarily the way we expected things to look this year, it seems fitting to celebrate 15 years of euphoria by highlighting the incredible culinary talent we have right here in the Upstate and across South Carolina. We are honored to be in a position where we can set an example for our industry, of how to safely move forward with food, wine and music festivals, and to prove that it’s possible to social distance without being socially distant. We are so thankful for each and every one of our community partners - from sponsors and vendors, to interns and volunteers, local and visiting chefs, restaurant staff, musicians and festival attendees. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for all of you. Thank you for your support.

Cheers to 15 years!

MORGAN ALLEN euphoria Executive Director

Each year, euphoria shines a spotlight on this gem of a city we have the pleasure to call home. And as much as we love bringing newcomers here to get a taste of Greenville’s magic, we’re also committed to giving back to the community out of which our festival was built. To make sure we’re fulfilling our mission, proceeds from euphoria are distributed in the form of direct grants by our 501(c)(3) organization, Local Boys Do Good (LBDG), to deserving Upstate charities. Over the past 14 years, LBDG has distributed grants to more than 40 deserving charitable organizations.

 G R A N T RECIPIENT PROTOCOLS & PROCEDURES

We will be implementing additional protocols to ensure the safety of all guests, as this is our number one priority. • Enforced social distancing when moving throughout the event • Mandated “mask when you move” — masks are required at check-in and anytime that you venture away from your assigned table. We will provide disposable masks if you do not bring your own. • Limiting the number of guests at all events

All staff and servers will be wearing masks the duration of the event. We will be meeting or exceeding all recommendations from both the CDC and SC DHEC. We ask that you do not attend the event if you have a fever, persistent cough, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 and have not been tested yourself, are awaiting a COVID-19 test result, or are not feeling well. If you have any of these symptoms, see our FAQs on our website for ticket refund options.

How much is a Michelin-starred dinner actually worth? updated article written by Ariel Turner in 2019 for the Greenville Journal

$800 might seem like a steep price for a pair to attend Seeing Stars: A Michelin-starred Dinner during euphoria weekend. For a typical Greenville weekend, you’d be hard-pressed to spend that much on your own food and drink and come out alive. But in this case, that price tag is a bargain. The dollar amount represents the chance during euphoria to meet two Michelin-starred chefs from two cities across the United States and partake in the culinary achievements that earned them those coveted stars. So what would it cost to dine in both of their restaurants, including your necessary airfare and hotel accommodations? $2,460

THE BREAKDOWN

Healdsburg, CA ($1,760) Airfare: $200+ (per person) Hotel: $300+/night

SingleThread

Chef Kyle Connaughton Dinner: 10-course tasting menu $375, plus $95 or $155 wine pairing (per person)

Washington, D.C. ($700) Airfare: $100+ (per person) Hotel: $150+/night

Bresca

Chef Ryan Ratino Dinner: 7-course tasting menu $75, plus ~$100 beverages (per person)

C O M M U N I T Y, F I R S T. When restaurateur Carl Sobocinski and Grammy Award-winning musician Edwin McCain founded euphoria 15 years ago, it started with a simple idea to bring the community together to share memorable dishes, notable wines, and unforgettable music as a way to raise money for charity. For a city with a growing restaurant and tourism scene, the effect was immediate and tangible, drawing not only weekend visitors, but also chefs and restaurateurs who would relocate their talent and influence to Greenville. As a nonprofit, euphoria’s impact reached far beyond the long weekend’s festivities. “We’ve spent the last 14 years making a positive impact on our community,” says Morgan Allen, euphoria executive director. “This festival has made significant contributions to Greenville’s hospitality and tourism industries, as well as its economic development and quality of life. We’ve funded projects for more than 40 local charities that help children, provide education through music or performing arts, and work to eliminate hunger. We have a lot of people looking to us to move forward in a safe manner so we can keep that mission alive.”

This year’s festival, originally designed to celebrate reaching the 15-year milestone, will look different than previously planned, with the focus on the local restaurants that serve as the backbone of the Greenville community. “Look around at any city or town in the Upstate, state, and country, and when you see a community begin to rebuild and revitalize, restaurants are the cornerstone of that development,” says Sobocinski, founder of Greenville’s Table 301 restaurant group. “We are the first to invest, build, and fill storefronts.” euphoria’s shift from the larger outdoor events to more intimate dinners serves the community-centric goals of providing a safe environment for all guests, while allowing chefs and their staff to do what they do best in their own spaces — an opportunity rarely possible during a festival. “It’s great to be partnering with local restaurants and venues that are already very familiar with the current restrictions and requirements,” Allen says.

Beyond the practical aspect, though, this revamped format allows euphoria to lead by example and encourage guests to continue supporting locally owned restaurants during a pivotal time, when the entire hospitality industry faces the potential of total devastation following an unprecedented loss of revenue since March. Announcements of restaurant closures, from some of the most influential in the world to the smalltown favorites, are increasing in frequency. To slow the rate of casualties, these essential businesses providing millions of jobs, irreplaceable life skills, necessary nourishment, and momentous celebrations need their communities to return the favor. “Restaurants are the fabric of a community,” Sobocinski says. Their kitchens and dining rooms have sustained life in every neighborhood and downtown they’ve entered, and the possibility of their extinction threatens the vibrancy of every community. Now, more than ever, investing resources locally is an increasingly important act of sustainability. And true, lasting community impact may very well come from supporting restaurants, first.
