aybe it’s time we kick the wheels off that virtual shopping cart. Oh sure, you can online shop in your bathrobe. Surf the sites in the middle of sleepless nights. Nobody says it’s not convenient. You can point, click, checkout, pay, all without having to see, much less talk to, another soul. But that’s just it. Online takes the soul out of shopping. Going shopping is social. A shared experience. Women especially are hardwired for this; evolutionary psychologists believe the natural inclination to shop together is a throwback to the huntergatherer days when we gals joined forces to forage for fruits and nuts. The cavewoman alongside us in the berry patch way back when has morphed into the girlfriend meeting us

downtown today; she’s still helping us forage for that perfect pick. Shopping is a sport, of sorts, and we know many a true athlete in this arena. The marathoners, happily spending all day long browsing the boutiques. The sprinters, finding exactly what’s needed without wasting a single second. The team players, always willing to go along for the ride. And of course the scorekeepers, measuring the success of each excursion by how much they save. It’s that cross-country buying, though, that threatens to defeat our brick-andmortar players. Shopping local matters. Keeping our dollars right here at home creates local jobs and funds city/county services via sales tax. Money’s tight, it’s true. Too true. But maybe instead of wringing out every last cent of perceived savings, we should focus on being intentional about how we spend our disposable income during this depressing

recession. A dollar spent at a locally-owned business has three times the impact on our community as a dollar spent at a national chain; a dollar clicked to an online store based elsewhere has no impact at all. Besides, shopping isn’t supposed to be about sitting around in our bathrobes. Stepping away from the computer and into the store makes shopping a fullsensory experience: we see, we touch, we smell. We try it on for size. We flip through the pages, maybe read the first chapter. We sit on it, then we lie down on it; we consider the full range of colors, combinations, possibilities.

We interact. And therein lies the joy—interacting with other shoppers, with the salesclerks, with that gal in the mirror who, as it turns out, looks pretty darned cute in those new clothes. Too many of us find a look that works, then wear it into a rut. We keep clicking on that same old style. So take your hands off the keyboard and reach out, instead, to the salesclerks in one of Greenville’s many intriguing boutiques. Make the most of their insight and opinions. Let them bring you another item to try on. Then another, and another. Indulge their encouragement to

continued from page 5 try something different: a color, a line, an accessory you might otherwise never consider. Trying on clothes ensures a perfect fit. But what we read needs to be a good fit, too. The siren call of online bookstores— once so irresistible—is fading. Turns out virtual reviewers and their over-used stars are feeble replacements for the flesh-andblood person standing alongside us in the stacks, commenting “Oh, that’s a great read!” or “His last book was better” or “Hey, if you like that you’ll love this!” Interaction matters in sporting goods, too. Online sites might sell all that gear a little cheaper, but it’s the elite-level runner now running a local shop who can look at your feet and determine the just-right shoes that’ll save you from miserable miles. It’s those real-live bike shop guys

who lead weekly rides and offer free advice along the way. It’s the gal at the hiking/camping supplier who can suggest the very best trails. That’s local, and that’s priceless. One last observation. An odd twist, but gift-giving gets better during lean times. Less money requires more thought. Get off the computer and think outside the big-box. Check out local art galleries for truly one-of-a-kind pieces; browse the weekend markets and fair-trade shops for uniquely offbeat items. Consider handmade jewelry, real or costume, as your budget allows. Opt for educational toys. All of these—and so much more—are available from the hometown merchants who bring special products, services and variety to the Upstate. So shop local. It matters. It makes our economy click. 

Greenville County does not have local option sales tax. Zero sales tax money comes back to the city and county. • Greenville generates just over 1/3 of all state revenue from sales tax money. • Greenville County generates $15.2 billion in total sales and $908 million in sales tax revenue to the state. • City of Greenville generates $3.9 billion total and $231 million in sales tax money in 07-08. • $248 million comes back to the school system from state general funds and a portion of that is sales tax revenue.

There’s No Place Like Home Home is a haven of comfort, love, fond memories, and security. Really there’s no place like it. In fact, more and more frequently, home is where people prefer to be as they age, surrounded by familiar things such as their own bed, their family photos, and their pets. But, what happens when an elderly person, living at home begins to need assistance with daily tasks? What if family members live far away or have other commitments, such as careers or families of their own? Fortunately, advance planning can help you and your loved ones prepare for such situations. For many families, home care is becoming an increasingly viable option. Home care refers to a wide range of health and social services provided in the home to recovering, disabled, elderly, or terminally ill individuals who are in need of medical, social, or therapeutic treatment and/or assistance with activities of daily living. Depending on the individual’s needs, home care services may be provided by an individual or a team of specialists on a part-time, intermittent, or hourly basis. Frequently, home care involves assistance with cooking and cleaning, running errands, or driving to and from medical appointments. Or, it might also involve nursing care, occupational therapy, or other medical assistance. The need for home care is increasing for a variety of reason. First, our elderly population is increasing, and a growing number

of older individuals are choosing to remain in their own home rather than moving to an assisted living facility or nursing home. In addition, advances in surgical techniques and new drug therapies have shortened the average length of a hospital stay, but individuals often need continuing care once they return home. Finally, home care is generally less expensive than care provided in a hospital, or skilled nursing facility, especially when only custodial (or non-medical) care is required.

WHO PAYS FOR HOME CARE? Home care services may be paid for directly by the patient and his or her family or through a variety of private, community, or Federal sources, such as Medicare or Medicaid. Traditional health insurance policies typically cover some home care services for acute needs, but benefits for longterm services vary and generally have a cost-sharing provision. Personal care services may not be covered at all. However, long term care insurance covers a variety of long term care expenses including many home care expenses. This may be something you want to further explore. More and more often, home is where people prefer to be as they age. It’s familiar. It’s comfortable. Indeed, there’s no place like it. Advance planning may allow your loved one to receive care in the comfort of his or her own home. Be sure to talk with your loved ones today. Loretta Hartzell is a licensed long term care insurance agent, Hartzell & Associates, Inc. She has an office in Greenville, SC and can be reached at (864) 232-1161 or (800) 293-2246.
