Open Studios201 Welcome to

SEW Eurodrive, South State Bank and the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) are delighted to present the sixteenth annual Greenville Open Studios with a record-high of 145 remarkable area artists. Since 2002, this premier event allows you to buy great art from this talented group of artists and provides you with the opportunity to interact with them inside their studios. This weekend will be a very enriching and entertaining experience for the entire Greenville community and its visitors. During the last sixteen years, Greenville Open Studios has evolved into the premier weekend for the visual arts in our area as evidenced by the outstanding community response to the event. Since 2002, over 493,000 people have traveled throughout the region to the various studios and have purchased over $2.82 million in art. The event would not be possible without the financial support of the many individuals, corporations and foundations that have recognized the importance and the vitality of Greenville’s community of visual artists.

Juergen, Christopher and Rainer Blickle of SEW Eurodrive and Katherine Odom and Chris Robinson of South State Bank have been instrumental in ensuring the success of this weekend. All of us at MAC are delighted to have South State Bank as our new presenting sponsor, and we welcome SEW Eurodrive for the tenth consecutive year as a presenting sponsor. We look forward to continuing our relationships with these two generous corporate partners and community-minded business entities. The MAC Board and staff are very excited to have 25 new artists involved this year in addition to the many who have participated since the event’s inception in 2002. Each of these artists has spent a considerable amount of time and personal resources to ensure that the weekend promises something for everyone from an avid art collector to a firsttime buyer or a curious observer. The arts have a very significant and major role in our lives and in our community. They have a huge impact on Greenville’s economy and add greatly to the beauty of the area in which we work and live. MAC is very appreciative for its outstanding relationship not only with Greenville’s excellent visual artists but also with performing artists and arts organizations. These individuals and organizations are instrumental in ensuring the sustainability of Greenville’s arts community while continuing to provide a diverse array of cultural offerings. We also thank the Greenville City Council members and the City’s Department of Special Events and Greenville County Council Members for their support of our vibrant cultural environment and for their providing the public with fantastic arts events throughout the year. We hope you will take advantage of this weekend to interact with these 145 artists in their studios. If you have any questions or comments, please call us at (864) 467-3132. We are confident that you will discover many masterpieces as well as have a fantastic and entertaining experience. Alan Ethridge Executive Director

OPEN STUDIOS

Greenville Open Studios has a tradition of offering so much in such little time. And it’s true, you can’t visit all the studios in one weekend. To help in navigating the tour and in selecting the studios to visit, MAC offers you a number of tools.

This Catalogue First and foremost is this catalogue. The self-guided tour is free, and this catalogue allows you to select the artists’ studios that you want to visit. This booklet also makes a great reference source for the future, so hold on to it. This year the studios will be open on Saturday, November 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 12 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Several artists will have their studios open on Friday, November 10 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.; they are designated in this catalogue with “OPEN FRIDAY .” For easy access to artists’ locations, check out the INDEX on the inside backcover – it’ll direct you to each artist’s page number and map location. The artists’ pages begin on page 8 and run through page 58. With each listing there is a sample of work, contact information and directions to the studio. Maps are located in the centerfold and on pages 80-85.

The new App! Visit our website or download it from the App Store Nov 1st. (It's free) Introducing the new Open Studios App! Open Studios Fall&Spring

Exhibits @ MAC

Fall exhibit

Participating artists from 2017 This exhibit is hosted annually and coincides with the fall Open Studios event. All works featured in this show are from the Greenville Open Studios 2017 artists. All works are submitted in a 12” X 12” (X 12”) format. This year’s exhibit, Something on the Squares, is on display at MAC from November 4 through December 15, 2017. Visiting the exhibit is an easy and convenient way to select which artist studios to visit during the weekend. The exhibit is also a showcase of the amazing and diverse talent of the participating artists.

Spring Retrospective

Participating artists from 2002-2017

As the list on the next two pages illustrates, many artists have participated in Open Studios at some point in its 16-year history. Each spring we invite them to participate in an Open Studios retrospective exhibit titled, One-Stop Open Studios. The exhibit is held in the Metropolitan Arts Council Gallery during Artisphere, the arts festival that brings approximately 100,000 people to downtown Greenville during its weekend run in May.

Holly Rollins

The retrospective exhibit is accompanied by an exhibit catalogue that highlights each work in the exhibit as well as an artist’s contact information and artist statement. An opening reception is held during the Artisphere weekend.

This exhibit allows for greater exposure and awareness of Greenville-area artists during Artisphere and generates additional interest and publicity for the fullfledged Open Studios event in November.

greenville open studios 2002 - 2017 ARTISTS 430 participants The success of Greenville Open Studios would not be possible without the 430 artists who have participated in the event since its inception in 2002. On behalf of the Metropolitan Arts Council, we applaud these individuals who through their talent and artistry make Greenville a superb arts community. Sadly, some of these artists are no longer with us, and they are greatly missed.

MAC has collaborated with Centre Stage since 2005 to arrange exhibits in conjunction with each of the theatrical productions throughout the year. This partnership has been vital in creating more awareness of Greenville’s visual arts community as well as the outstanding theater offerings at Centre Stage. Since 2010, this collaboration has been sponsored by South State Bank. We greatly appreciate the commitment of Andy Westbrook of South State Bank to this project, as he has been instrumental in continuing this very important sponsorship. FLATOut UNDER pressure Held on June 23-24, 2017, the eighth annual Flat Out Under Pressure is a unique collaboration between the visual arts and sound environmental practices. The event begins with a 24-hour art-making juried competition. The selected winners are then given the opportunity to choose two images of their work for reproduction on the downtown recycling bins. The winning artists also receive cash prizes, and the firstplace winner gets a week-long trip for two to Italy to stay in the beautiful Villa Sant’ Andrea. This year 90 artists came to MAC on Friday, June 23 to get their surfaces officially stamped. The same surfaces were then returned to MAC within 24 hours as works of art. The works were juried that afternoon with an awards reception held the evening of June 24. All submitted works were displayed in the MAC Gallery for a month-long exhibition.

Endowment

for the

To ensure the longevity of Greenville’s arts community, the MAC Board of Directors voted in 2010 to begin the MAC Endowment for the Arts exclusively for the grants program. The endowment was established with 5% of all unrestricted income raised in 2009. Each year, the endowment has been funded at this rate along with solicitations to major donors and prospects. The Endowment will be instrumental in providing a sustainable and steady stream of income to MAC’s constituents throughout Greenville County. With a goal of $25 million and publicly launched in February, 2014, the Endowment will allow MAC to expand its current giving guidelines, allowing for greater funding across all categories as well as for establishing relationships and collaborations with new arts entities. It will also allow MAC to fund new projects and organizations that will inevitably arise. As of September 25, 2017, the Endowment had a balance of $1,236,876.
