ICE, FIRE, AND A FAIR There have been a lot of big events in Illinois history. There were glaciers in Illinois millions of years ago. From the North they started to cover Illinois. The glaciers are thick sheets of ice. When they melted they made the ground smoother. That is why there aren’t many hills in Illinois. Another major event was the Chicago fire. The Chicago Fire happened in 1871. It nearly burnt all of Chicago down. Everything was made out of wood so it spread very fast. The World’ s Columbian Exposition took place in Illinois. It was held in 1893 in Chicago and had new inventions such as hamburgers, chocolate bars like Hershey Bars, Wrigley's gum and other new things. WATER TOWER

There are many things in Illinois that connect to Abraham Lincoln. Many places in Illinois honor President Lincoln. The Abraham Lincoln Memorial is the most popular and is a very special place to Illinoisans because it’s home to Abe Lincoln. It is in Springfield, Illinois, the state capital. It goes back to the mid 18th century and reminds us of the amazing president Lincoln. Lincoln’s home was and still is in Springfield. People still visit it daily. It eventually became known as an important landmark. People believe that touching and rubbing the nose of the bronze bust at the entrance of the Lincoln tomb brings you good luck. The Lincoln Memorial has a very elegant structure with European columns. It is located in East Springfield. Another landmark in memory of Abe Lincoln is the Lincoln Monument. It was made by Leonard Crunelle in 1930. The Lincoln Monument is in the city of Dixon and is made of pure bronze. The statue reminds us of Lincoln’s service in the Black Hawk War and being the 18th president. There is also a bridge named after Abraham Lincoln. It has four lanes and crosses over the Illinois River, Highway 351, Illinois and Michigan Canal, Iowa Railroad, and Buzzi Unicem. The Lincoln Memorial Bridge eventually leads to the Lincoln Memorial. It has a very big arch in the bridge and opened in 1987. Lincoln Hall is a concert hall on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. It hosts many emerging bands and musicians throughout the year. Lincoln Hall was first opened in 2009. Abe Lincoln was a very memorable president and it is great that Illinois has many things to remind us of him.

The Water Tower in Chicago is a very important Illinois historic landmark. It has a long history. The Water Tower was built in 1869 by William W. Boyington with large limestone blocks. The Water Tower stands proudly at 806 North Michigan Avenue surrounded by modern buildings such as the John Hancock Center and the Water Tower Place; it is also in the middle of the Magnificent Mile. People say that it looks more like a tiny European medieval castle then an actual water tower. The Water Tower is 154 feet tall (47 meters). The Water Tower was and still is very important to Chicago. They built it to serve Chicago clean water to the people in Chicago from Lake Michigan. Until the water tower was built the people were getting water from the Chicago river; that was a problem because the river was very polluted. They thought that the Water Tower would help. It did help for a while, but eventually Lake Michigan got polluted too. In 1871 the Chicago Fire destroyed almost everything in Chicago including houses, buildings, and stores. The Water Tower gained fame because it was one of the only things that survived the fire. Now it is an art museum. You can visit and go inside. When you go inside you can see historic pictures plaques and you can learn about Chicago’s history. You can also see the room with the big tubes that they used to pump water. GREAT LANDMARKS The Water Tower is a great place to learn about and visit. Navy Pier, Lincoln Memorial, Lincoln Park Zoo and The Water Tower are very important and exciting landmarks.

The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field.” That was the beginning of what people believe is the Cubs curse. The branches are Legislative, they make the laws, Executive, the governor who carries out the laws of the state, and Judicial, they explain the laws. The constitution was written so that the Illinois government had a rule book to follow and these were their goals. The preamble is the introduction to the constitution.
