DEDICATION To the inestimable service rendered the citizens of Dayton and the Miami Valley by the five dams in preventing flood destruction, to the courageous and unceasing work and the foresight of those public minded citizens and engineers so vitally interested in the Miami Valley Conservancy Project, the foremost of its kind in the world, we, the Senior Class of 1937 dedicate this volume of " The Eagle." THEME Although she suffered untold damage and destruction in the horrible flood of March, 1913 , the city of Dayton passed through the recent Mid -western flood catastrophe with hardly a drop of water in her basements. The contrasting change of conditions was due entirely to " Dayton's famous dams ," built through the heroic efforts of the city's populace and the foresight of her distinguished sons, among whom, James M. Cox, Adam Schantz, Jr., Col. E. A. Deeds, and the late John H. Patterson, " kept going" even in the face of almost insurmountable odds, financial, legal, legislative, and most commonly, engineering.
One year after the 1913 Flood, the Miami Conservancy District was established and plans for flood control in Dayton were started. In 1923, ten long years after the famous inundation, Dayton's five earthen dams were completed, ranging in height from 73 to 125 feet, and in length from 1,200 to 6,400 feet . " Dayton's famous dams," Huffman, Lo~king 足 ton, Germantown, Taylorsville and Englewood, have cost her citizens $67 ,000,000, but have paid for themselves a hundredfold by the feeling of security which their presence inspires. In recognition of their inestimable value and omnipresent vigilance, we adopt as the theme of our 1937 Eagle, " Dayton's famous dams ."

MOTHERS' CLUB
MRS. LOUIS CLARK
For the second year as president of the Chaminade Mothers ' Club, Mrs. Louis Clark has been an enthusiastic spirit. With the assistance of Mrs. Paul Ham , Mrs. William Doorley, and Mrs. Mark McBride a round of social affairs filled each succeeding month of the school year. One of the biggest improvements in the School during the past few years, the decorating of the Chapel, was made possible by the direct help of the Mothers' Club. It sponsored the usual Turkey Raffle and Card Party on November 27, a Christmas party on December 16, a Covered Dish Party and entertainment on January 22 , a Bingo and Card Party on April 29, and the climax of social activities, a Senior dance on May 27 at the Engineers' Club. Surely the graduates of 1937 thank the Mothers heartily in the name of the principal, Brother Fred, the faculty and the student body for their loyal and interested support for a better family spirit at dear old Chaminade.

University of Dayton is Dayton's University
prefers to patronize home products. When the home product, your university, does not need to be J)atronized but demands use on its own merits- one needs no extraordinary acumen to know where to go. Daytonians who enroll in their own institution will find a highly trained faculty, adequate departmental equipment, a spirit of friendly camaraderie, and even a tinge of that dignity and culture which a number of foreign students and European educated professors give . They will find an educational method, tried through the centuries, tested yesterday, and today triumphantly vindicated; an utter absence of caste in an unusually democratic atmosphere; an opportunity to cultivate new and lasting friendships; up-and-coming athletic teams to cheer or play on-and a generally progressive spirit in all aspects of college life.

TO THE CLASS OF '37: Congratulations and sincerest good wishes for success in your work that lies ahead. The world is waiting for you. It needs men of culture, intelhgence, and vision. Your training at Chaminade has pointed out to you the need for higher education. During my incumbency as president of the Board of Lay Trustees at the University of Dayton, I have seen higher education in progress. In the business world I have had the privilege of seeing higher education put to the test-college men taking their places in the responsible business positions. Consider well the advantages of college training. May you be like the Eagle whose emblem you cherish-always seeking newer and higher levels. Yours sincerely,
...
