"Won't you come in, Mr. Joseph?" The Chaminade Dramatics Club is designed to give students an opportunity to indulge and develop their talents as amateur actors and to acguire poise and selfconfidence before an audience. Brother John O 'Con. nor, faculty moderator, concentrated this year on the development of ease and freedom on stage and on a more complete portrayal of character by the budding Thespians. The club presented several very successful performances this year- the One-Act Play Festival in November, the Variety Show, "Salt Water Daffy," in February, and the three-act comedy, " Arsenic and Old Lace," in May. All these programs reguired weeks of painstaking rehearsals and advance planning, for which participating students gave up much of their leisure time.

The Chaminade Chapter of the National Forensic League, organized this year by Brothers Thomas Corbett and Robert Locke, grew out of the old speech and debate club. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for students to participate in interscholastic debate and oratorical contests. By taking part in numerous speech programs and tournaments throughout the state, Chaminade's orators distinguished themselves in several fields and sharpened their powers of logical reasoning. This year's officers were Willard Hutzel, President; Jim Kielbaso, Secretary; and Bob Hoy, Treasurer.

The Junior Council on World Affairs of Ch~m足 inade, supervised by Brothers Joseph Barrish and Richard \X'essling, is one of Chaminade's most widely publicized organizations. Dedicated to the spread of knowledge concerning current world situations and to the better understanding of foreign cultures and governments, J .C.O .W.A., spearheaded by Willard Hutzel, Chairman of Co-ordination, sponsored several instructional programs during the school year. The members of the club participated in weekly discussions and appeared on Headline Hunt, a local world affairs television program. By displaying over 2000 posters throughout the school and distributing pamphlets to students, J.C.O.W.A. aroused great interest in world affairs among members of the student body. The highlight of the year's program was on May 10, when Chaminade played host to J.C.O.W.A. members f r'Jm schools all over the county at the first annual Recognition Ceremonies.

One of Chaminade's largest and most popular organizations is the Band, directed by Brother Joseph Trageser. The Band not only gives students a chance to develop their musical talents but also provides experience in group participation and marching. With spirit and enthusiasm, the Band lends zest and color to football games and rallies. It represents Chaminade in civic and religious parades and has gained wide acclaim for its marching and precision formations. At the Christmas and Spring Concerts, stirring marches and popular ballards were presented in catchy arrangements and almost professional style.

It is路 our privilege and pleasure to dedicate the 1955 EAGLE to Bro. Louis Hettich, S.M. This year Bro. Hettich is celebrating his fiftieth year in the Society of Mary.
Born in Dayton, Bro. Hettich made his final profession of vows in the Society on August 31, 1905. Since 1942 his friendly face has been a familiar sight in the classrooms and halls of Chaminade. As a teacher of physics, German, and mathematics, he has endeared himself to the hearts of countless students. We wish to congratulate Bro. Louis in this, his Jubilee Year, and we join with the faculty in wishing him many more years in the Society of Mary at Chaminade.
Besides training students interested in photography, the Camera Club renders invaluable assistance to the two major school publications, the Annu.lI and the News . Directed by Bro. Donald Foley, the members of this comparatively small group are always on hand to snap photos at important events, and also develop, print, and enlarge them with speed and skill. This year's officers were Larry Fox, President; and Andy Rado, Vice President.

The Chaminade Booster Club, capably supervised by Brother Bernard Polgman, has as its aim to support all school activities in every way possible. During the school year they prepared colorful posters promoting the football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and golf teams. At football pep rallies the walls and rafters of the gym were decorated with gigantic examples of their handiwork. They also gave their generous support to the Sodality and to the various school drives.

The members of the annual staff devote a large percentage of their after-school time to the preparation of the EAGLE. The yearbook is a permanent record of the scholastic year, highlighting activities and achievements and presenting familiar scenes of high school life. It is specially intended as a souvenir for seniors. Photographers, artists, writers, and layout planners all collaborated to produce this 208-page book. Under the direction of Brothers Thomas Corbett and George Deinlein the staff has done its best to produce a book which will be a nostalgic record of life at Chaminade in 1955. The business staff of the EAGLE, supervised by Brother Andrew Hawke, launched an ad-and-patron dr"ive early in the year and conducted the senior and underclass subscription drives capably and with excellent results. Without the bookkeepers there would be no book.
Editors Tom Muth, Louie Kavanaugh, and Bill Bramlage listen to expert advice on layout design from camp any representative, Mr. John Wells.

For many students the outstanding extracurricular feature of the year has been the annual variety show. This year's performance, " Salt Water Daffy," presented in February, was directed by Brother John O'Connor, head of the dramatics department. Almost from the opening of school, singers, dancers, and musicians spent much of their time in preparing for this two-hour extravaganza. At last show time arrived . Just before the curtain opened, the Master of Ceremonies stepped forward and announced that three Charr.inade students had won a trip to Florida as their prize in an essay contest. The three winners came up on stage, and the next thing the audience knew, they were in Florida! In fact, the whole show revolved around their adventures at the seashore. The chorus provided several beautiful original ballads composed by Brother Raymond McQuade. Intermingled with the exploits of Our schoolmates and their new-found friends at the beach were record pantomimes, comedy monologues, group dance renditions, and a hilarious ballet number featuring Bob "Pappy" Morrella.

Although most of their time is spent behind the scenes, the stage crew, supervised by Brother Joseph Trageser, deserve special credit for their continued service. It is their duty to keep the auditorium, and especially the stage, in readiness at all times for assemblies, plays, concerts, and other school affairs . They handle scenery, lighting, and special effects, both for the Chaminade Dramatics Club and for outside groups using the auditorium. They also prepare the stage for P.T.A. meetings and for special events like the Variety Show and the Band concerts. Ron Kronenberger was elected President of this year's crew.

In his first year as head football coach at Chaminade, Mr. Donald "Bucky" Weaver showed he has what it takes to make a great gridiron coach despite the team's record of three wins and six losses. Getting off on the wrong foot with a 20-14 loss to Louisville Flaget, the Eagles suffered the additional setback of losing to city competition for the first time in ten years. With fifty consecutive city wins as their goal, they met the Stivers Tigers with spirit and determination, but fell, 27 -13. After barely edging the Wilbur Wright Pilots in a 7-6 victory, the Eagles got down to brass tacks and whipped Fairview 14-0. Encouraged by this success, the Green and White were aiming high when the met Cincinnati Elder, but, for all their resolution and effort, they suffered a blasting, 46-0. Bouncing back from this defeat, the Eagles showed they had lost none of their fighting spirit, and battered Roosevelt's line to the tune of 20-13. Having completed their city schedule, the Green and White ran into some tough out-of-town competition. They went down, in quick succession, before Toledo Waite, 26-51; Purcell, 7-30; and Hamilton, 0-19. Yet even in these unsuccessful campaigns they never lost that spirit and sportsmanship which has made them a great team in the past, and will make them a great team again and again in the years to come. 126

Chaminade's initial venture into the field of freshman football netted an undefeated season and the city junior league title. Under the watchful eye of Robert Holycross, the reserve team gained valuable experience in the principles and practice of the great game of football and learned sportsmanship first hand by meeting underclass teams from other schools. If their record is indicative of the spirit and abilities of the freshman footballers, the next few years should see Chaminade on top once more In city varsity competition.

In his second year as Chaminade basketball coach, Mr. Tom Frericks led the Eagle cagers to the 1955 City Championship-the fifth in Chaminade basketball history. In the course of the season the Green and White encountered such formidable foes as Hamilton Catholic, whom they bea( 74-42, and Wilbur Wright, whom they edged 5755 . West Milton and Purcell were more powerful opponents, and downed the Chaminade five. The Eagles started off the season with a few alternate wins and losses, and after taking 3rd place in the Tecumseh Carnival, slowed down a little before winning nine straight games, to finish the season in a blaze of glory, copping the citY title on the strength of Ron Hill's foul shot in the Fairview contest, which ended 46-45.

What does it take to keep Chaminade high school running smoothly? Master this recipe. Take three buildings, pour in 1200 adolescents. Add five dozen teachers, fifty-two courses, and forty -five activities. Sprinkle freely with a million miscellanies. Stir constantly. Bring to a slow boil over a period of nine months . Throughout be wise and patient, look to the future while deep in the details of the present, keep smiling. Send forth each year boys who have developed into men of Chaminade. This is the task. To路 lead their lusty yells in unison, the Cheerleaders leap and antic on the basketball court and on the sidelines of the football gridiron. With Brother Raymond Kacirk as their moderator, they spend hours practicing their acrobatic routines and devising new cheers. At games they pep up spirits when the cheering lags, and keep it loud when it's going strong. With seniors John Leitschuh and Tom Kaminski leading the way, the squad placed third in a field of eighty-three in state-wide competition at Tipp City during the football season. Top row: A. Reynolds, T. Kaminski , M . Schuer, J. Scheper. Front: J. Dorsten, J. Leitschuh.

HOW WILL ~
THE CLASS OF '55
AGRICULTURE
BE REMEMBERED?
RELIGION
~ ." " ~ EDUCATION
Every class leaves behind certain impressions that are remembered long after its members graduate from school.
It will be your ambition to see your class remembered as one of the best that ever represented your school. The surest way to accomplish this is for each member to live up to the ideals taught you at Chaminade High School. With youth, training, and the desire to serve, you are splendidly equipped for the larger responsibilities ahead. We can only add our congratulations and sincerest wish es for your success.

BRO. ALFRED E. BEIGEL, S.M.
On August 19, 1954, Bro. Alfred E. Beigel, S.M., passed to his eternal reward . His completely unexpected death culminated 39 years of service to God, the Society of Mary, and youth. He served as treasurer and business manager of Chaminade for the past five years, a period which saw the completion of the new building. . Brother Al will be remembered in many ways ... for his thorough and interesting courses in American history, for his booming voice in happy social gatherings, for his patience and understanding, and for his devoted service to God. Although the passing of Brother Al leaves a deep void within the faculty of Chaminade and the hearts of all who knew him, it enriches the heavenly choir with another strong Marianist voice.

The modern airplane, flashing through the sky like a silver bullet, symbolizes the scientific progress anfl high living standards of the twentieth century, as the Eagle, traditional symbol of Chaminade, has always stood for strength and victory. Just as half a century ago Dayton gave to the world the Wright Brothers, fathers .of powered flight and conquerors of the air, so Chaminade each year gives to the world an ever-increasing number of resolute young men, strong in character and high in their ideals, eager to meet and conquer the problems of our modern age.

In every large group, problems arise which require prompt attention. At Chaminade the Student Council has been established to seek out, study and solve these difficulties. Composed of one representative from each of the thirty-four classes, an'd directed by Father Joseph Lekan, the Council meets every two weeks to discuss the criticisms, complaints, and suggestions of students. Besides acting as intermediary between the student body and the school administration, the Council sponsors an annual dance about the first of the year, which is open to all students.

The goal of Chaminade's Math Club, a chapter of the National Mathematics Honor Society, is to encourage students to strive for superior scholastic attainment in the field of mathematics and to bring them to an appreciation of the influence of mathemat ics in various phases of cultural achievement. At !"egular weekly meetings, talks on various mathemati cal topics are presented by the members . The club, composed entirely of seniors, and supervised by Brother Edward Zahn, took part in two major activities this year, the Colloquium in April and the Governor's Board competitions in May. At the beginning of the year the members elected Charles Kuntz, President; Jerry Goldschmidt, Vice President; Walter Maher, Secretary; and Tom Doerfler, Treasurer.

Chaminade's amateur radio club, supervised by Brother Edward Zahn, had an extensive and well-planned program this year. Regular bi-weekly meetings were held with the object of increasing the students' knowledge of the fundamentals of radio and of aiding them to acquire sufficient skill and understanding to obtain amateur operator's licenses. At the meetings, informal talks were given by Brother Zahn and the members of the club. Six of the club members already have ham licenses and broadcast regularly from their homes over their own radio network, which they call "Dragnet." During the year the club members studied Morse code, elementary radio theory, and many specialized subjects concerning simple radio receivers and transmitters .

The three major adult organizations at Chaminade gave their usual enthusiastic support to the school and its activities. Early in the year the Mothers' Club launched with conspicuous success the traditional "Pillow case" bingo. A Father-Son Banquet featuring Lou Groza and Jim Britt as speakers highlighted the activities of the Dads ' Club. And the Band Club members worked tirelessly behind the scenes to insure the success of the annual banquet and raffle.
