Chaminade builds men. Men build worlds. The men whom Chaminade build are whole men who are prepared to enter society and preserve what is good and change what is evil. From his first day of school until graduation the student is formed spiritually, mentally, and physically. He is influen ced by his religious • life, family, schoo l, extra-curriculars, job, and social life. It is the task of the schoo l to bind the ideas he receives into a Catholic outlook on life. At Chaminade each teacher dedicates himself to the formation of the whole student. It is the conviction of the Chaminade faculty that they must build better men for better times.

BETTER MEN FOR BETTER TIMES
2)eJication We dedicate this book to the eight lay faculty members of Chaminade. For 911 of us this is not a dedication without meaning. It is our way of expressing our deepest gratitude to Mr. Donahue, Mr. Early, Mr. Faust, Mr. Donald Frericks, Mr. Thomas Frericks, Mr. Merri\ nan, Mr. Otten and Mr. Regan, for outstanding service to the students of Chaminade. We make this dedication with a keen realization of the sacrifices made by these men. Teaching is a never ending job, one requiring perseverance, patience, dedication and understanding. Everyone of these men has shown that he abounds with these qualities. Far too often their work goes unheralded and unnoticed . To site instances of their untireless effort is unnecessary. We cannot count the minutes, hours, days and weeks, spent by these men to better the school and to better the students. Such dedication a cause is not often found in the world today. We are prou fortunate to be in such close contact with these fine men. To owe our thanks, to them we owe our tribute, to them this book.

IN MEMORIAM
Brother JOH 1880
. HALL, S.M. 956 On July 27, 1956, Brother John Francis Hall died at St. Elizabeth 's hospital , in the seventy-sixth year of his age and the fifty-eighth of his religious profession. He served on the faculty of Chaminade High School the last twentythree years of his life.
He made stones from tax stamps and built buildings. He let air from the tires of th e se lf -rig hteous. He cost li ght into bright places, and made darkness aware of itself. He was a comedian w ith the wor ld for a straight man. He was th e dent in t he ha lo . He was a shiny dime in t he hands of an urchin. He was the microscope to little things. He was the second half performance of a Chaminade team. He was the rocks wh ich cried out when the articulate were si lent. He is th e o ld Cham inade ca ll ed upon when the new Cham inade wan ts anyt hing done. All men were fallen ange ls or baptized devils. Distinctions were perilous. Every man was a variation of himse lf . One man's meat was another's. "No man 's guilt was not his own, nor was any man's innocence a thing apart." Th e Old Cham in ade wi ll never die w ith the destruction of its bricks. Broth er John Ha ll did not d ie wi th the co ll apse of his body. He lives on in the generation of his seed in t he hearts of al l he ever met.

Fath er Lees impresses the thought "Ma ry is the mother of mankind" at the Mother's Day Pilgrimage at Mount Saint John.
RELIGIOUS The basic aim of Chaminade is to build good Catholic leaders for the future. Therefol-e, it is obvious that religion shou ld play the major role in the life of th e school. Dail y Mass and Communion are fundamental parts of the schoo l day_ Confessions are heard twice daily. Among the outstanding religious functions of the year were the Mass of the Holy Spirit; the daily recitation of the Rosary during October and May; the

The Sodality, the most far-reaching organization in the school, is charged w ith the tasks of encouraging the students to , live th e full C hristian life under t he auspices of Our Lady . It is their job to see that every pha se of student life-intel lectua l, cultural , socia l and at hletic-is permea ted w ith the spirit of Christ, Son of Mary.
Lay a nd re li gious facul ty atten d the dedication af th e shrine of Our Lady in the caurtyard of the new faculty house.
" Li ve modern, li ve Mary," urges Fathe r Gerbe r at May Rosa ry Rally.
On October 8th our 1400 students filled the gymnasium while some 60 Student Council members, class officers and Sodality members took part in the living Rosary. In this way, the school makes an outward act of devotion to Mary, the school's protectress.
"School Life" was the topic for the November Sodality study day. Talks on various aspects of this subject were given by Helen Schulty (Julienne), M a uri n e Sullivan (St. Joseph's) and Ramon Estevez and Bill Pflaum of Chaminade. Two hundred students were present at this day of thought and discussion.

II BRARY STAFF There is probably no other organization in this school which goes so unnoticed yet deserves so much praise as the library staff. It is this generous group of boys under the direction of Father Brown, our librarian, that keeps needed books avai lable for the students. By donating their free periods and study time to others, these boys set a fine example of the true Chaminade spirit.

Afte r a long summer of practice, the band made its initial appearance on the gr idiron. Its formations and music were top-notch. As a special item, it sa luted th e school's loyal followers at Julienne and St. Joe's. They also appeared in numerous parades and were the honor guard for the Queen's float in the U.D. Homecom in g parade. Close on the heels of the marching season came the Christmas concert. Possibly this is t he gayest part of the schoo l year for the band. Fo llowing the concert, the Parents' Clu b of the Band gave a Chr istmas party. Short ly t hereafter, the band gave a musical lift to the variety show. From thi s point on, al l practices were aimed towards the Spr ing con cert, the height of Chaminade's musical year.

SPRING CONCERT
Once again a successful band raffle was topped off by the annual Spring concert. This year's concert was opened by the Cadet Band , which is composed almost entirely of freshmen. This is the first time that a special portion of the Spring concert was devoted to freshmen. Their program was amazing and predicts a bright future for our music department.
Band is visited by some "Boogie Woogie Mice."
The
main
portion
of the concert featured
semi-classical and classical
many
pieces, as well as rousing
marches and humorous numbers. Outstanding were such compositions as "Allerseelen ," "The Gypsy Baron," and "Killarney Overture." Highlighting the program was the drawing of the winning ticket in the Band Raffle . This concert was the last performance of the year for the senior members of the Band. Several weeks later the Band Banquet officially closed the concert season with the presentation of awards . And so the Band starts another Summer, building towards another tine band not only in music but also in marching and spirit.

The Eagles then fel l in two consecu ti ve wee ks to Roger Bacon and Purce ll , by scores of 14-0 and 27-0 respectively. Closing out the year in the city champion ship game on Thanksgiving Day, the Chaminade team won a resounding triumph over Roosevelt, 33-7 . Record -w ise, it was an ou tstanding season, but in sincere team effort, fine sportsmanship, and exemplary conduct on and off the field, our 1956 squad rated high in the anna ls of Eagle gridiron history. THE END OF AN ERA Scarcely anything may be sa id here which has not been said before. Fuzzy Fau st was first and foremost a gentleman and then a great coach . And nowhere did th ese fine manifestations o f genuine class more readily asse rt themselves than in the person of Fuzzy Fa ust, the loser, as we ll as in Fuzzy Faust, t he w in ner.
To say t hat he can never be replaced wou ld not a ltogether be true. Already t he Chaminade heritage has come under t he protectorate of young Ed Regan. Th at t here wil l never be anoth er quite like Fuzzy Faust shou ld be self-evident.
The varsity cagers, coached for th e fourth stra ight year by Tom Freric ks, surprised all by fInishing a close second to Rooseve lt in the city leag ue.
