In these times of sudden change and insecurity, there is something comforting and inspiring about a tradition. Bro. Anthony Saletel has become just that to the Chaminade student, a tradition. After coming to Chaminade for the first time in 1930, Bro. Saletel was again assigned here in 1951, becoming teacher, friend and inspiration to all fortunate enough to know him. On the occas(on of Brother Anthony's anniversary of fifty years of dedicated service to the education of young people, we, the graduating seniors of 1959, wish to show our appreciation for his accomplishments by dedicating the 1959 volume of the EAGLE to him.

Mr. Ed Regan Head Coach
FOOTBALL
Captain Dick Beckerich checks future strategy.
Our mighty Chaminade Eagles under the fine coaching of Mr. Ed Regan and his assistants, Glenn Dillhoff and Jerry Faust, earned their fourteenth city title with a 7-1-1 record. The team according to Mr. Regan was the best Chaminade has ever put on the gridiron in recent years, certainly a remarkable achievement. Ed, formerly a coach at Cleveland's Holy Name, took the reins of the Eagle team in 1957 when the '59 seniors made their high school football debut. As a reward for his fine efforts Ed has led the Eagles to two successive city crowns. Glenn Dillhoff, who just last year joined the Chaminade football staff, and Jerry Faust, the most recent addition to the Eagle staff, collaborated with Ed Regan to produce a championship team. Mr. Dillhoff, formerly an All-Ohio football star, was responsible for the Eagle lines ; while Mr. Faust, a recent University of Dayton quarterback, coached the backfield. The senior football members who graduated this year have only played for championship Eagle teams - '56, '57, '58. Several have been regulars for all three years and also have been elected to the All-City teams. For their outstanding achievements Dick Beckerich and Bob Heckman were chosen "Honorary Captain" and "Most Valuable Player" respectively by the Eagle Team. Behind the team was, also, a championship staff. Mr. "Fuzzy" Faust, a man well known around Chaminade for many years, and his assistant Bro. Robert Brisky kept the team in excellent physical and financial shape. Under this able leadership the managers worked ceaselessly to carry out the many duties placed on them by the team, the coaches, and the head manager Mark Fettig. Along with the others Dr. McCarthy was continually occupied by broken bones, sprained ankles, and the thousand and one other ailments connected with football. Thus concludes another year of championship football at Chaminade - one more river to success well bridged.

SEASON RESUME Coach Tom Frericks checks schedule.
Although finishing second in city league competitIOn, the 1959 Chaminade basketball quintet set 2 new records and tied a third. They reached an all time high at Chaminade by compiling a record of 16 wins and 2 defeats. With a tournament record of 1 and 1, the Eagles won a total of 17 games, which tied the record set in the 54-55 season. Against Beavercreek, Chaminade scored a record 88 points in defeating the Beavers 88-51. The Eagles compiled three straight wins before being turned back by Fairmont 43- 45 . Then the Eagles scored two big wins, Dunbar 53- 40 and Belmont 72-48, setting the stage for the City Title game against Roosevelt. But the sharp-shooting Teddies downed the Eagles 62-46. The Eagles bounced back by winning their final seven games, including important victories over Fairview 66- 52 and Wilbur Wright 56-55. Despite the 16-2 record, tournament time found the Eagles unseeded. The student body stood ready to support their team, as the highlight of the season came with the Eagles facing Roosevelt in our first game of the tourney. The town was painted green as the Eagles upset the previously undefeated Teddies on Dave Crone's field goal, in a sudden-death overtime, 55-54. The emotional strain of the game proved to be too much for the mighty Eagles as they fell in the second game to Eaton 41 - 40. Chaminade is certainly proud of the great 58-59 season which the Eagles compiled under Mr. Frericks.

SODALITY
Chaminade is a school dedicated to the development of good Catholic leaders. Therefore it is obvious that religion must play a vital role in the life of a Chaminade student. In the school chapel every student has the opportunity of attending daily Mass and Communion and of going to Confession, before or after school. The school and the Sodality sponsor many religious activities to help the student maintain an ideal spiritual outlook on life. Among these were the Mass of the Holy Spirit, Mass in honor of the Jubilarians, Rosary and Benediction during October and May, and the Retreat for underclassmen held at school and the closed Retreats for seniors at Mount Saint John. In addition to aiding the general spiritual welfare of the Chaminade student, the Sodality works toward another goal. This year that goal was "The Development of the Whole Christian Man." This was the theme for the two-day National Sodality Convention held at Chaminade. Schools from all areas of the United States were represented at this Convention. The theme was also the topic for two Study Days sponsored by the Sodality. Students from Julienne and Saint Joseph's were invited to attend these Study Days, to share in their benefits.

The club operates through the school and in affiliation with the Dayton Council on World Affairs. Aside from the abundant reference material in the club library, the members benefit from the active inter-school activities such as the Model General Assembly, the World Affairs Institute, and the International Smorgasbord. not enough ...
If America is to maintain its present leadership, we shall literally need thousands of well-educated young people with the vision, the imagination, and the courage that our pioneers used in the conquest of the unknown. The future progress of our nation rests squarely upon how well its young people measure up to their responsibilities. This means that no matter what your ambitions may be ... whether your particular talents fit you best for careers in medicine, business, engineering, finance, government, or the social sciences . . . great opportunities await you in these fields if you qualify for leadership. Make full use of every opportunity for self-improvement and continue your education all through life. Chaminade High School has given you an excellent foundation for your development into an admired and respected leader of the community.
