How would you cover this year in 240 pages? What would you include? In all t he t hings that occurred
2
this year, what was important? Just stop a minute and think about it. With a thousand people around, so much is happening.
3
Maybe it's because Chaminade doesn't operate in a lock-step fashion; and because of all the growth and change going on. Not
4
onl
in the people who are Chaminade, but in Chaminade itself. Growth and change ...

"What traditional education for the most part succeeds in achieving is the frustration of the individual's uniqueness and creativity. This is customarily achieved by putting the child on an -assembly-line in which, instead of being treated as the unique individual he is, he is dealt with as if he were exactly like everybody else. In the factories called schools the child is forced to engorge large quantities of rote-remembered facts, and then at certain calculated ceremonial ordeals called 'examinations,' he is required to dis- -• gorge these facts onto blank sheets of paper, thus leaving his mind blank forever thereafter. " Ashley Montagu
"Teachers who assume that pupils will try to do as little work as they can possibly get away with, will behave in ways which make their expectations come true. The pupils will turn out to be apathetic, lazy, dependent, and in need of close direction by the teacher." Goodwin Watson
". . . The educational failure of our high schools is even worse. By his very action, each drop-out casts a vote against the education he has been receiving. Who would deny that juvenile delinquency is related to the failure of our educational system to provide stimulation and meaning for our adolescents. " Erich Fromm
8
"The reason given a child throughout his education, to explain why he is doing things and studying subjects which he doesn't care about, is that he is being prepared for the next stage of schooling or for the job market. 'You can't get a good job anymore,' he is told, 'unless you finish high school and go to college.' "You can't get into Nearby U.,' he is reminded, "unless you work now. ' Only very rarely does a parent or a teacher give a self-sustaining answer that explains why the learning is intrinsically valuable. Learning is thought of as a possession to be acquired, which is apart from the individual and with which one can attain the desired social objectives. " Mark Gerzon
"Beginning with school, if not before, an individual is systematically stripped of his imagination, his creativity, his heritage, his dreams 'an.d his uniqueness in order to style him into a productive unit for a mass technological society. " Charles Reich
"It looks like the course of events will be as follows: the disorders will increase. A certain number of schools, especially high schools - and perhaps in rich suburban neighborhoods - will be burned down. It seems likely that in the next few years the children in junior high school are going to play truant in droves. Taxpayers will finally refuse to pay for this kind of thing; in 1969 new school-bond proposals were already being voted down. Adolescents will then be put out on the streets with no provision for their education at all. In this emergency, some other people will begin to say what I am saying now. " Paul Goodman
9
"You canpot train a person to have a strong will. . If you educate children in free路 dom, they will be more conscious of themselves, for freedom allows more and more of the unconscious to become conscious. That is why Summerhill cl?ildren have few doubts about life. They know what they want. " A.S. Neill
:
.
"Instead of the standardized elementary and secondary school curriculum in which all students are essentially. exposed to the same data base - the same history, math, biology, literature, grammar, foreign languages, etc. - the futurist movement in education must attempt to create widely diversified data offerings. Children should be permitted far greater choice than at present; they should be encouraged to taste a wide variety of short-term courses, perhaps two or three weeks in length, before making longerterm commitments. Each school should provide scores of optional subjects, all based on indentifiable assumptions about future needs. " Alvin Toffler
"There is no way to help a learner to be disciplined, active, and thoroughly engaged unless he perceives a problem to be a problem or whatever is to-be-Iearned as worth learning, and unless he plays an active role in determining the process of solution. That is the plain, unvarnished truth, and if it sounds like warmed-over 'progressive education,' it is not any less true for it." . Neil Postman Charles Weingartner
10
"A good educational system should have three purposes: it should provide all who want to learn with access to available resources at any time in their lives; empower all who want to share what they know to find those who want to learn it from them; and finally, furnish all who want to present an issue to the public with the opportunity to make their challenge known. " Ivan lllich
"It is not the instruction that educates but the instructor. The good teacher educates by his speech and by his silence, in the hours of teaching and in the recesses, in casual conversation, through his mere existence,路 only he must be a really existing man and he must be really present to his pupils; he educates through contact. " Martin Buber
"We can think of ourselves not as teachers but as gardeners. A gardener does not 'grow' flowers; he tries to give them what he thinks will help them grow, and they grow by themselves. A child's mind, like a flower, is a living thing. We can't make it grow by sticking things onto it any more than we can make a flower grow by gluing on leaves and petals. All we can do is surround the growing mind with what it needs for growing, and have faith that it will take what it needs and grow." John Holt

Dear Bro. Lamb, I juet wanted to tell you a few of my feelings about Chaminade now that Irve graduated and spent a year at college. The comments I at Chaminade cannot that year cannot be it may have made in
make now concerning my 1969-70 school year be complete at this pOint. The impact of judged honestly at any point but changes my life can at least be guessed at.
First, I feel the freedom I had during my senior year at Chaminade left me in some ways unprepared for college. Most of this was my own fault for not taking advantage of my opportunities. The biggest change was ba~k to a system lined with structure grade. and pressures. Although there is a greater ~reedom in course selections and scheduling free time, the ~act is that a certain amount of work must be done ~d tests must be passed. MY adjustment did not hurt me that badly but I continually ~elt eramped by the regimentation. You might say I was spoiled by my freedom at Chaminade. !ho~h there were problems I also feel that possibly my senior year served to interest me in learning. I have become .nch more interested in reading in a wide variety of areas. This of course may be a result of my first year at college or a combination of the last two years.
BY senior year at Chaminade was a positive experience. Whether the school system as it was had that much an effect cannot be told. But I would have to say that it served as some sort o~ turning point for me. My confidence, interest and all around attitude Yere changed in that year so I naturally feel strongly about it. Colleges must change for the Chaminade system to be revolutionary. But I feel that the one year I had 1ms important and could be for anyone. Thanks,

Dear Bro. Jerry, I thought I'd I've been thinking University. I feel was the background
write a short note and comment on some things about during my first year at Creighton that I did fairly well and the biggest reason I received at Chaminade.
The first year that I attended Chaminade I was frightened because of the tradition of sports-coat- tie- wearing-iron-handeducation you received. It was a good system but I didn't stick with it very long because the system started to change. As the sports coats started to come off, the desire to learn started to increase. Maybe it wasn't the sports coats at all, maybe it was just the people. The grades, the discipline, the attendance, all seemed not to be placed above what you learned. This system became more radical as time progressed, until my senior year. My senior year the system changed very rapidly. I feel that the responsibility that was given to me during this time has been the greatest single factor to help me in college. At school there is no one there to tell me to study, read my notes or get up for my eight o'clock class . The fact that Chaminade taught me how to study and learn, and how to deal with people was really great. However, I do feel that cOming out of my eighth grade year the only thing that saved me was the sports- coattie-wearing-iron-hand-education I received . Hope you had as good a yea r as I had. Sincerely yours,
af//'~ Ted Wuebben Class of '70

Personality Parade Want the facts? Want to learn the truth about prominent personalities? Want inform ed opinion? Write Chaminade High School, 505 S. Ludlow, Dayton, Ohio 45402. Your full name will be used unless otherwise requested. Volume of mail received makes personal replies impossible. Q. Why did the Triangle cease publication? I liked it.-M.H., East Side
Q. I've heard that Bro. Finnegan is a pizza freak. What about it?-D. F., Shiloh
A. The Triangle, the combined newspaper of Chaminade, Julienne, and St. Joe's, ceased publishing with its second issue . What actually happened was that the Triangle spent 86% of its budget from Student Council on the first and second issues . So, Student Council gave them an ultimatum: find a cheaper printer or el se no more money . A cheaper printer was not found, and the editors were out of a job. Q. Is it true that Wayne Klenotic, former Chaminade Executive Director, is working for a trucking firm?-J.F., Belmont
A. Yes, but it is only temporary. Mr. Klenotic, after leaving the Society of Mary, has taken up a job as a biller with Commercial Trucking Lines .
BRO. BOB FINNEGAN
A. Although Irish to the core, Bro. Bob has been known to frequent every pizza house in the area. He says, "Make mine wi th sausage ."
Q. Was the phantom fire bell ringer ever caught?-E.R. , Wayne Township
A. No. But the frequent fire drills which occurred during mid-year were put to a stop by Mr. George Early, with the help of the Dayton Fire Department. According to Mr. Early, the firemen went around to the fire bel ls and pa in ted the poles with a substance that would stain the hands of the "phantom" for several days. After this was known, for some strange reason , the bells quit tolling.
Q. I understand that there was a group of parents who wanted to close down Chaminade. Is there any truth in this?-E.L., Dayton View
A. Somewhat. A group of parents, largely from Our Lady of Mercy Parish, organized with the purpose of examining Chaminade's innovations in education. They were dissatisfied with the changes at Chaminade. We can say with more certitude that the group was eager to encourage a more conservative ph i I osopy at the schoo l . Like any pressure group, this loosely knit organization had a point of view and voiced it vociferously. The result: the tempo of change at CHS slowed down a bit and "parents" became a concern for any future change at Chaminade.
SOUL FOOD UNLIMITED?
Since his defeat for Studen t Representative, does Jim Krygier plan to pursue a television career?-K . D. , Riverdale Q.
I hear that the vending machines will be stocked with "sou l food" ne xt year. Really?-M.B. , Oakwood Q.
A. Not very likely. The most popular items are and will rema in hot dogs and hamburgers. When it comes to the stomach, Chaminade is sti ll as American as mom and app le pie .
Who said, "Most organizations have a structure that was designed to solve problems that no longer exist"? R.N. , Forest Park Q.
A. John W. Gardner, former Health, Education and Welfare.
Secretary
of
SOPHIE'S: SAVING IT FOR THE BROTHERS
A. Actually Jim plans only a parttime st int on WCDO's " It' s Your Turn to FUTURE SHRINK? Sp eak." His real ambitions lie in the field of psychiatry.

CHAMINADE? WHAT 'S THERE TO DO AT CHAMINADE? You can become totally enthra lled in a piece of work, work which becomes so futile and seems unending . Yet you sti ll keep attacking that work, which has lost all its original intent. You keep fighting it because it has become a part of you, and you must complete it for yourse lf, not for the satisfaction of others, but for youtself.
68
I
~I
69
You can create; seeing your vISions or dream form in front of your eyes . And when it is complete you can just sit back and smile.
---I 70
71
You can jive with your woman or get down with a few buddies or simply enjoy the presence of the people ' around you.
72
You can f ind the time to do the things
YDU
would rea lly like to do.
74
75
...
You can become truly intent in listening to someone, actually losing you rself in what another is saying.
76
77
You can become involved in Chaminade through its various clubs and groups. This includes several levels of involvement, anywhere from a school broadcast, to a game of chess, or to. cleani ng up for the team .
78
79
You can participate in those day to day things, eating your brown bag lunch, looking at beautiful chicks, or cat<!hing up on some needed sleep.
p
80
81
And finally you can get down, because at times Chaminade can be the most depressing place in the world. When such times arise you look for an isolated spot and attempt to regain your sanity amidst all the confusion.

Schools have a very particular problem, and, in this respect, Chaminade is no exception . Educational institutions tend to be pictures of society in mini ature. Many of the attitudes, feelings, and prejudices, which are present in our nation at this time can also be found in our educational environment. In particular, racism is rampant.
I
EJIAMIH
The most disturbing fact about the whole situation is that schools have also been charged with the task of eliminating this problem through education. The structure and means are definitely present, but the problem is that too few of the students have really taken the time to utilize it. The structure allows students to work in the area of race relations for academic credit and has brought in speakers for the benefit of both students and facu Ity .
U(
128
Alas, it still appears to have very little affect. People still refer to each other by race in derogatory terms and the restroom walls are still full of racial slurs . The patience exhibited by the two races for each other appears to be less and less as the blacks become more proud of their blackness and the whites more • afraid .
The picture is not hopeless, though, because as long as a structure .t o change ideas is still present, some students will work to take advantage of the opportunity . These students are the ones who will work to make Chaminade a picture of what society should be, ra1her than is. The responsibility now lies upon the shoulders of the student and faculty member to make best use of this opportunity to fulfill that goal.

路Seniors . . . This is the big year . .. because we're "bad" . .. because we're the leaders ... we're the presidents . . . we're the captains . . . but what is it really like being a Sen ior? .. . waiting to get out of here and be free . . . catching Senioritis . .. for some, Chaminade is important .. . it has helped them find themselves ... but others couldn't care less . . . skipping class and going to Kramers ... school doesn't interest them ... must it? 路 . . . we're just trying to be what we are .. . we're through with the games . .. there are bigger responsibilities .. . Ii ke the draft . . . our job .. . and college . .. what's it all about? . . . 路Seniors . . . it's over ... going from one stage to another .. . four years can zip by pretty quick ... we did so much . . . but so much was left undone .. . would we go back and do it again? . .. no . . . it would be rough going through all those problems .. . but we sure had a hell of a good time going through them .. .
Congratulations Seniors

Democracy. Before we say we have it, we should examine ourselves and our country. The key to democracy is understanding: understanding of the black man's fight in America, understanding of what we are doing and will be responsible for in Vietnam, understanding of the despair and hopelessness of millions of Americans today. Through our understanding of our problems, we will finally be able to live up to the responsibilities which our democratic system puts upon us: the responsibility of knowing what's going on and doing something about it. This is the only way our system will succeed. Every American must make a personal commitment to bec o me aware. This awareness starts through kn owledge, which extends fa r bey o nd a ny formal education we will ever get. If we really love America, if we are r eally p atrio t ic, this is the course we m u s t f o ll ow. There is a saying that . goes, "If you're not part of the solut ion, then you're part of the problem." Let's face up to i t. Joe Ballman
