ACADEMICS

Remember when the first day of school meant new clothes, new crayons, new friends, new teachers? It was kind of scary going into first grad~, wasn't it? Today, the first day means renewing old friendships, shaping new ones, and facing the responsibilities that go along with school , in general. Frosh start new in a bigger way than ever; everybody else picks up where they Ieft off. Some look forward to the last day from the first hour. For seniors, this year's first day is, in a way, a last. They will never have another one at Chaminade-Julienne. We all anticipate the end. Whatever is in between we will remember ,'both trivial and momentous. Over the four years we are here, we have four first days. We all grow, and at the first of the new year, we remember something from the last.

Chaminade-Julienne High School is an evolving community structured according to Christian values. The more specific aims and goals of the community include helping students to make personal life decisions and post-high school careers through a complete guidance program, providing . a variety of liturgical experiences, promoting an appreciation of U.S . citizenship, events of cultural value, and loyalty to the community through extracurricuI ar acti viti es, encouraging phy~i cal health through physi cal education, and promoti ng responsi bi I ity to make constructive contri butions to the Chaminade-Julienne community.

The 1976 C-J Marching Band, Flag Corps, a nd Drill Team are composed of 150 members under the direction of Brother Bruce Gi ffi n. During one hectic week in August, all these . individuals came together at Bergamo for band camp, the purpose of which is to create a marching unita group of people who think, play, and march together. It is a difficult, e xhausting, and often trying experience but the sense of pride and un ity in accom plishment grows as each tiring day 路passes. Once their goal is achieved, the unit goes on to perform at con c erts, parades, and, of course, footabll gam es. On Oct. 24, they sponsored the first annual Chaminade-Julienne Marching ' Band Festival.

Bro. Ken Uckotter Often, the students and faculty here at Chaminade-Julienne become so involved in the everyday grind of classes and homework, that we forget about very integral part of our school, the Administrative Team. Success in Cross Country is not just a matter of one person finishing first; but of a ,team of seven men beating fatigue, a rugged course and finishing without an ounce of energy ,left in their beings. 1976 was a year of record accomplishments for the Eagle Cross Country Team. After repeating as Greater Dayton League and Sectional champions, the runners narrowly won the AA SW District cross country title by edging out Cincinnati Green Hills by one point. The following week they culminated their season with an outstanding fourth place finish in the state meet in Columbus. Individual state honors were given to three Eagles in the top twenty: Sophomore Chuck Bridgeman was third, Senior George Spitzig was thirteenth and Junior Tom Quigley was seventeenth. The leadership of this trio was a major asset to the team's success. Just as valuable was the depth of talent in the varsity and reserve squads. Next year's team will miss the running of Seniors George Spitzig and Ray Schommer. However, if so few seniors are leaving, intersquad comp~tition may develop an even greater team for the future.

After a week of back-breaking practice the senior girls met the juniors in what would turn out to be one of the most challenging battles in history-The , Powder Puff Football Game! The ferocious seniors gave way to an equally devastating junior team in the first quarter in the form of one touchdown. Not to be outdone, Peggy Coogan of '77 ,t ied up the score by halftime. The 6-6 score remained stable until the 4th quarter when Coileen ' Jab I i enski rac ked up another touchdown (and 2 extrfl poi ntsl for the overpowering juniors. I

Half-time entertainment was provided by the all-male band and drill team. They performed with great elegance and precision. Despite the cold weather, scratched knees, an d bruised egos, the afternoon of Oct. 21 was enjoyed b'y all. 43

do justice to our true team effort. The record definitely showed more losses than wins, but we feel we gained more than we lost.

It was an enjoyable season getting to know one another and meeting some good competition, Entering every game, we had the spirit and talent to win - but the bad breaks and loss of confidence in our team made it hard to accomplish victory,

S CONCERT_

"Simply to build ..• " These words from the poem, II Speak the Truth to the People" read by David Harris during the Black Week Assembly seem to be the essence of what the Black Student Union is. Building pride and unity from a common heritage, the Black Student Union hopes to create a better society for themselves and the people in their community. Four weeks of preparation went into the Black Student Union Black Week Assembly. A skit, an interpretative dance, and a number of readings from various black authors were presented to the C-J community. The theme of striving to gain and maintain equality through unity was clearly expressed in this moving and well planned performance.

Softball Beginning an early season, the Eagles started well. A major reason was Jane Meyer's excellent pitching. In four games, she reached into double figures with strike outs, totaling 91 for the season. Another reason for the success was the occassional and spectacular bursts of hitting led by shortstop Theresa Pazitney, third baseman Kim Thomas and catcher/outfielder Collette Jackson . Rating first in the Greater Dayton League, the Eagles placed Mary Jo Summers and Jane Meyers on the first team and Theresa Pazitney received an Honorable Mention. Special thanks go to Leslie Bourne, manager and Mary Agnes Mikalauskas, scorekeeper.

r In January, the C - J Theater Department presented its second show. The loyal efforts of the thespians this time produced "The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd". All through December, the worry, the screams , the intolerance, the flat notes and the tears were abundant. But in January this cathartic nightmare vanished when the sparkling musical tragicomedy burst onto the stage for a five performance run. The show was under the direction of Fr. Bob Bouffier. Without his dedication, pati ence and tears, the producti on could not have been staged.
