Message from Our Board Chair Dear Friends,

As you can imagine, since January 2020, CJE’s ability to fulfill its mission has been significantly complicated by the COVID-19 crisis. What started out as a strong year in terms of delivering our wide range of health and human services to some of our most vulnerable community members—seniors—pivoted sharply in midwinter to herculean efforts that hopefully would mitigate the spread of the virus. I am proud to say that CJE moved quickly to take guidance from all the federal, state and local health authorities and developed proactive plans that would keep residents, clients, staff and volunteers as safe as possible. Unfortunately, this meant that several vital programs or services, such as Adult Day Services, also had to curtail or stop their operations. Nonetheless, CJE staff members rolled up their sleeves and carried on, even if it meant working with COVID-positive residents put into isolation, taking on new duties or working extra shifts at a different location, wearing uncomfortable personal protective equipment while administering tests in the parking lot, keeping residents entertained while social activities were stopped, and responding to family members who couldn’t come see their loved ones in person. These are only a few of the ways that CJE staff members answered the call for help.

During this same unprecedented year, we also delivered almost 63,000 kosher meals to homebound seniors, assisted 1400 seniors in receiving their government benefits, counseled over 200 clients through in-person or telehealth sessions, and attracted over 4,000 viewers to our online Cyber Club. As we like to say… At CJE, Life Goes On.

To all those who are “attending” our first-ever virtual Celebrate CJE gala, we hope you will see why we are honoring our incredible staff. They all—individually and collectively—are what make CJE so special, regardless of where they serve. I also hope that tonight’s event will give you deeper insight into our holistic approach to senior care. This organization, founded on Jewish values and principles, feels it is a sacred responsibility to care for our community-at-large. To do this, we must ensure that CJE has the resources to address the financial, emotional, physical and spiritual requirements of future generations. Not surprisingly, this year and more than ever, we especially need your help to shore up our financial position. The additional cost of PPE and hazard pay for employees on the frontlines coupled with a loss in revenue due to shuttered programs have devasted our budget, even though the generosity of our community has been unparalleled. With gratitude we have received special funds provided by JUF, dinners sent to staff from grateful families, and donations of hand sanitizers and masks. We are incredibly grateful that so many lives have been spared because of CJE’s due diligence in listening to the health care experts about best practices in a pandemic. To all—whether you are viewing Celebrate CJE on September 13, 2020 or afterwards—thank you for listening to our many stories of achievement and perseverance. We offer deepest thanks to our Celebrate CJE Co-Chairs Susan Ringel Segal and Allan Goldstein, the entire Board of Directors, incredible sponsors, and dedicated ad book contributors. It’s been a challenging year, indeed, but your contributions to ensure a successful event have been inspiring. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Be well in the new year, Marc Berman Board Chair

Message from Our President & CEO Dear Friends,

Just a few months ago, we had no idea that our 15th Celebrate CJE gala, our largest fundraiser of the year, would be a virtual event. Instead of speaking from a podium, overlooking a banquet hall of 600 people dedicated to enhancing the lives of older adults, I am limited to a few minutes on Zoom and this note to let you know how incredibly proud I am of CJE’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Our valued employees have met or exceeded our expectations in serving our most vulnerable clients and residents with dignity, respect, and innovative programming during this challenging time. So, what did we do and how did we do it?

First, like many other businesses, we developed a multi-faceted Plan of Action to mitigate the spread of the virus across our continuum of care. Many of our employees were told to work from home if possible while our frontline workers like nurses, CNAs, activity workers, dining, and housekeeping staff were asked to put in double shifts. I became the official “Purveyor of PPE,” searching the internet for hours to buy gowns, masks, face shields, and gloves when the entire world was doing the same thing. In all, we have purchased about 500,000 PPE items to date. Other funding sources provided 40,000 masks and gloves to the 2000 people we assist through Holocaust Community Services and over 500 people in our affordable, independent housing residences. Over 4,000 additional meals were added to our regular home-delivered meals program as frail seniors were told to stay away from grocery stores and other shopping areas. On the programmatic side, our resourceful social workers transitioned to providing mental health counseling and care management services via telephone, Zoom, and Skype which our seniors adapted to fairly seamlessly (after just a little bit of technology tutoring!). Our Community Engagement Team, Volunteers, Religious Life staff and many others wrote and produced videos to entertain residents confined to their living quarters.

Other staff members raised their hands to work in buildings where their colleagues contracted the coronavirus and needed to take sick time. Yes, we have had a couple dozen of staff members and residents test positive for COVID in the past few months, but overall, we have been extremely fortunate that our carefully-followed procedures have minimized the spread of this contagious disease. If that weren’t enough, we stayed on schedule to finish construction of Tamarisk NorthShore, where residents began moving to in August (with its own brand of COVID-preparedness as well).

While we are saying thank you to all our staff members, giving recognition for their dedication to our mission, we know we could not accomplish these extraordinary feats without the ongoing generosity of our community—from JUF to our donors, sponsors, ad book participants and everyone who is attending our Celebrate CJE gala. But our financial needs are still growing. I urge you to please “Fund-A-Need” that strikes a meaningful chord in your heart.

Thank you for your enduring commitment to CJE’s fundamental value so eloquently stated by Rabbi Heschel: “A test of the people is how it behaves toward the old.” CJE’s future success in enhancing lives of seniors is, literally and figuratively, in your hands. May the New Year bring peace and good health to all,

Dan Fagin President & CEO

At CJE SeniorLife…Life Goes On We especially thank our staff, friends, clients, residents, board members, donors, and sponsors--who have gone above and beyond in order to help our vulnerable older adults to pursue lives of meaning, independence and good health through

LIFE ENRICHMENT · SUPPORTIVE RESOURCES HEALTHCARE · RESEARCH AND EDUCATION Please note: Due to COVID-19, most of our in-person programs have been suspended. See below how we’ve worked to provide you virtual programs, telehealth, and other vital services so that you can remain healthy and enriched, which is our highest priority. We are starting to reopen some programs, and all current information is available by calling 773.508.1000 or visiting cje.net.

Life Enrichment

CJE’s programs and services in our residences and the community provide an enriched mind, body, spirit and cultural experience for older adults. Our philosophy: staying active and “engaged with life” is an important component of healthy aging. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Community Engagement helps older adults to remain independent and to stay healthy and engaged in society through mental and physical health screenings, lectures, social events, fitness programs and the forging of new relationships for a more fulfilling, active lifestyle. During the pandemic, most of our programs have transitioned to online programming on our new CJE Cyber Club, located at cje.net/cyberclub. Cyber Club presents a large selection of programs, from 1) live scheduled sessions available via phone, tablet or computer, to 2) recorded programs that can be accessed at any time. We are currently working on presenting some in-person programs again. We follow CDC guidelines, like reduced capacity, social distancing, and mask-wearing. RELIGIOUS LIFE SERVICES

Recognizing that a healthy spiritual life is the foundation for the health and wellness of older adults, CJE SeniorLife offers a wide range of spiritual, religious and cultural programs in our residential settings. Pastoral Care is provided by our full-time certified chaplain. Shabbat and holiday services are conducted at many CJE locations. CJE works closely with many community clergy and places of worship to reach out to their congregants in need of eldercare services. VOLUNTEERING

Almost 2,000 volunteers provide vital services to clients including participating in activities, delivering meals and visiting at-risk seniors. During the pandemic, new and existing volunteers pitched in to deliver meals and make well-being phone calls.
