year this has been celebrating CJE SeniorLife’s 50th anniversary, with the grand finale being tonight’s gala! Thank you for joining us as we honor the work of this extraordinary organization. Tonight, we are celebrating what we have accomplished as an agency—and look ahead to how we will support senior services in the future.

For the last 50 years, we have played a critical role in the care of Jewish older adults and the broader community. This is made possible by the work of CJE leadership and staff, countless hours from our volunteers, guidance from our Board, and very importantly, the support of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and our generous donors. As we approach the next 50 years, we remain steadfast in our mission and uphold our commitment to evolve as an agency to meet the changing needs of older adults and their families.

In the past year, we adopted our new vision, and it has become the foundation of our work moving forward. This new vision is a true testament to our commitment to the health and welfare of older adults and their families in the Jewish and larger community. We have identified and begun to implement “the best of the best” social services practices to make it easier for older adults and their family caregivers to access services and programs they need and want, in the community of their choice for a safe, healthy, and fulfilling life.

Our staff continues to assist thousands of older adults and their families through services such as counseling, support groups, home-delivered meals, and benefit services. They have also found innovative ways to broaden our reach and further grow programs like legal services, and expanded community engagement opportunities, both in-person and virtually. We are finishing renovating our Adult Day Services space in Evanston, and have collaborated with Elderwerks Educational Services for a new virtual reality training program for professionals caring for adults with dementia called Dementia Reality®. This is just a small sample of the tremendous work being done daily throughout CJE!

Tonight, as we honor CJE and those that support us, I hope you will leave with a deeper insight into our comprehensive approach to caring for older adults. This organization, founded on Jewish values and principles, feels a great responsibility to care for our community at large. To do this, we must ensure that CJE has the resources to address the financial, emotional, physical, and spiritual requirements of future generations.

Thank you to our Celebrate CJE Co-Chairs Don Trossman and Nicole Katz for planning our gala as well as your ongoing dedication to CJE SeniorLife. Dear Friends,

We are thrilled to be together with you in person for the first time in three years! After many months of anticipation, we are excited to celebrate with you and toast to the successes we share in pursuit of our goal to enhance the lives of older adults.

While we are still navigating in the aftermath of the pandemic, and learning a new way of doing our work, we have had a very productive year at CJE SeniorLife. We continue to provide great care to our residents and clients while being equally focused on implementing our new vision.

As you know, we spent last year researching and evaluating solutions, to help us define a forward-thinking path for CJE. In response to the changing needs of seniors and their families, we have a new vision, which is to help older adults live better every day connected to the community of their choice with access to trusted care and a full range of services, rooted in Jewish values. This year, we have focused on our internal structure and processes. In doing so, we collaborated and engaged with our staff, added new technology and tools, and developed new roles, all with the goal to improve our clients’ experience and support a service-centric culture. We have moved the agency forward in just a short time, but still have more work ahead of us. However, once fully implemented, we will be better equipped as an agency to provide a simpler process with positive outcomes for our clients and residents.

I am proud of our agency and what we have accomplished. One of the best outcomes so far was confirmation of something we already knew—our Board of Directors and staff are truly dedicated to the mission of CJE. Their passion for helping older adults and their families through the challenges that come with growing older was demonstrated time and time again this past year.

None of this, both what we do today and in the future, is possible without the support from our dedicated volunteers, outstanding business partners, and generous donors. Your support for Celebrate CJE, and philanthropy throughout the year, coalesces the people and resources that enable us to be here today, tomorrow, and for our next 50 years. THE CJE ADVANTAGE

Since 1972, CJE SeniorLife has been a central resource and champion for older adults and their families by providing a range of community-based and residential care options. Annually, CJE SeniorLife connects more than 20,000 seniors to aging solutions by offering either direct eldercare services or facilitating access to services that enhance their quality of life while honoring their unique healthcare, lifestyle, and socio-economic needs.

ADULT DAY SERVICES (ADS)

Supervised, structured programs for people with Alzheimer’s or related disorders or those who are frail or socially isolated. A group setting maximizes each participant’s potential by promoting autonomy, creativity, and self-esteem.

ADS Deerfield—A program for people with early to moderate stage Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

ADS Evanston—Traditional program for people who are without cognitive impairment, who have mild dementia, or who have mid-stage dementia.

CJE BENEFITS SERVICES

Staff members provide assistance, resources, education, and advocacy on benefits including, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), community services, public assistance, housing referrals, transportation and other needs. All Staff is SHIPcertified (State Health Insurance Assistance Program).

CJE CARE MANAGEMENT SERVICES (CM)

Care Management partners with older adults in the community to foster their dignity, quality of life, and give peace of mind, as well as maximize their independence, health, safety, and wellbeing. Master’s level social workers provide home care, meals, financial assistance, direct services, support, guidance, referrals, and more.

CJE CONCIERGE

Our Concierge team enhances customer services and provides up-to-date information to callers and on-site visitors in an efficient and timely manner. Concierge staff greet callers and visitors, respond to both routine inquiries and emergencies, relay calls to the proper department, and perform a variety of related clerical duties.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT (CE)

CE helps older adults remain independent and connected to resources. CE encourages mental and physical health by providing health education, lectures, activities, social events, and fitness and exercise programs. CJE Cyber Club presents a wide array of online classes.

COUNSELING

CJE’s clinical social workers provide counseling to older adults and families, assisting with addressing symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as problems caused by family and caregiving issues, changes in health, losses, and other crises. The majority of group and individual sessions continue to be held via video or phone, but some clients can be seen face to face on an asneeded basis. See Linkages and Support Group entries.

EDUCATION

CJE SeniorLife, committed to providing professional training and community education, holds professional seminars and conferences (often with CE and CEU credits). We publish findings on innovative research studies and disseminate educational information to our clients, residents, and the community through our website, print materials, and emails.

HOLOCAUST COMMUNITY SERVICES (HCS)

HCS provides support to Holocaust survivors and family members, including programming, referrals, socialization, and ongoing financial help with food, medication, home care, or emergency needs. Russian-speaking staff available.

HOME-DELIVERED MEALS

Fresh or frozen cRc-certified kosher Home-Delivered Meals are available for qualified individuals within specific boundaries in the Chicago area.

HOUSING: AFFORDABLE AND SUBSIDIZED

CJE SeniorLife owns and operates residences for those who qualify for government-subsidized housing. These include studio and one-bedroom apartments (Krasnow Residence, Swartzberg House and Village Center) and a 24-unit Group Living Home (Robineau Residence)

KOSHER CATERING

Weinberg Community provides rabbinically-approved kosher catering for holidays and special events.

KOSHER TO GO

CJE also offers weekly delivery of fresh-frozen, cRc-certified meals via our Kosher to Go® program.

IRVING H. AND JANE W. GOLDBERG LEGAL SERVICES AT CJE

Members of the Help Desk staff provide legal consultation, advice, referrals, and drafting of documents for older adults and their family or caregiver advocates. Services are free of charge.

LINKAGES

Linkages is a program that assists seniors who are primary caregivers of adult children with disabilities.

SPIRITUAL AND RELIGIOUS LIFE

Aware that a healthy spiritual life is the foundation for the health and wellness of older adults, we offer spiritual, religious, and cultural programs in our residences. Pastoral Care is provided by our full-time certified rabbi/chaplain. Shabbat and holiday services are conducted at a number of CJE locations. CJE works closely with many community clergy to reach their congregants in need of services.

RESEARCH

The Leonard Schanfield Research Institute (LSRI) conducts applied research in the field of aging to provide the catalyst for new and innovative program development.

INTAKE HUB SERVICES

Our Clinical Intake team includes four masters-level clinicians who triage, assess, and connect community members to the appropriate CJE program or service; facilitate client referrals between CJE programs and services; and make recommendations and give referrals to appropriate resources and partners outside the agency.

SUPPORT GROUPS

Support groups for adults, caregivers, and Holocaust survivors are facilitated by CJE counselors. Groups dealing with bereavement, caregiver support, and aging challenges continue to be held via Telehealth.

TAMARISK NORTHSHORETM

CJE-managed Tamarisk NorthShore offers fine apartment homes at market rate for adults 65 and better. Residents enjoy many dining options, Life Enrichment programs, and more.

TRANSPORTATION

Limited rides on a CJE Shalom Bus are available.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Our capable cadre of dedicated volunteers offer their talents, skills and time to enhance programs and services for CJE’s residents and clients in our various locations and in the larger community. These opportunities provide wonderful and rewarding exchanges for all involved.

WEINBERG COMMUNITY FOR SENIOR LIVING Gidwitz Place for Assisted Living features one- and two-bedroom apartments for older adults who require a supportive environment yet still wish to live as independently as possible. Amenities include personal care services, housekeeping, restaurant-style dining, a full schedule of activities, and registered nurse on site 24/7. Respite care available.

The Friend Center for Memory Care is a welcoming residence for people with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders. Residents enjoy spacious private rooms, assistance with bathing and grooming, stimulating activities, and meals. The Bernard Heerey Annex has an expanded area for Adult Day Services programming. Respite care is also available.

pleased to congratulate CJE SeniorLife in celebrating 50 years of success as a non-for-profit organization serving our local community. I am greatly appreciative to have CJE in our area. CJE SeniorLife has provided services to some of the most vulnerable people in our community, including thousands of older adults through comprehensive support for healthcare and housing resources.

Every year, CJE provides programming for over 20,000 older adults and family members in our neighborhoods. In the past year alone, they have assisted over 1500 clients through over 4700 hours of service, with 80% of the clients reporting they were more financially stable than before. The home-delivered food service programs, healthcare and therapy groups, and residential services not only assist our senior citizens to enhance their quality and comfort of life, but also work tirelessly to foster long-lasting networks of mentors, mentees, and close friendships.

The quick adjustment to the COVID-19 pandemic has been unparalleled in providing our community with the resources necessary to overcome the unique challenges of the quarantine. The Cyber Club has established an online presence to promote physical fitness, mental health awareness, and a sense of community. I am also impressed with the assistance CJE provides with housing, mental health research, and benefit counseling.

In addition, I commend the work of their team of 600 employees, who assist our senior population with daily tasks in the comfort of their own homes.

I wish CJE SeniorLife many more years of continued success in their future endeavors, and thank them for all the work they do in serving our community.

On behalf of the City of Evanston, I would like to congratulate CJE SeniorLife on an extraordinary record of providing compassionate care and steadfast support for older adults and their families in Evanston and throughout the Chicago area.

CJE has been a dedicated community partner and an invaluable resource for older adults in our community for roughly half a century, but its services have been especially critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. With thousands of older adults isolated during this stressful and uncertain time, CJE has served as a lifeline, providing virtual enrichment and social activities, telehealth services, counseling, and home meal delivery to those in need.

I’m thrilled at the recent opening on Howard Street of the Ann Rainey Apartments with 60 new affordable housing units, bringing much needed affordable housing to our community and complementing CJE’s existing Adult Day Services, which enrich the lives of so many residents.
