Dear Friends,

Many thanks for joining me tonight at Celebrate CJE. I am thrilled to mark the 45th Anniversary of CJE SeniorLife and be honored along with my fellow Board Chairs who have served this remarkable organization over the past four decades. It has been my privilege to serve as Board Chair for an organization that marries two of my passions—service to the elderly and service to the Jewish community-at-large.

The Board Chairs who preceded me built a strong foundation that enabled CJE to thrive. We are all in their debt for their vision and hard work. Our Agency provides vital services for older adults that enable them to age with dignity and have access to resources in order to successfully navigate this chapter of their lives. As I near the end of my term, it is gratifying to note just a couple of our more recent accomplishments: the launch of a newly remodeled therapy room at Lieberman; and the growing engagement of our Associate Board members who, individually and collectively, have chosen to dedicate their time and talents to CJE.

I hope by being here tonight you gain a deeper understanding of CJE’s mission and the Jewish community’s responsibility to ensure that CJE will continue to provide critical services for future generations… L’Dor V ’Dor. Message from Our President & CEO

Dear Friends,

As I reflect on my 30-plus year association with CJE, starting as a JUF Young Leadership Board Observer, you can imagine the pride I feel to be here tonight as its President and CEO to celebrate our 45th anniversary and the enduring devotion of all its Board chairs.

Watching CJE evolve from a storefront in East Rogers Park to a continuum of care that improves the quality of life for more than 23,000 older adults and their families each year through home-delivered meals, transportation, geriatric care management, adult day services, skilled nursing, assisted living… and more… is a true testament to our Board’s dedication to CJE’s mission set forth by its first President and Board chair Joe Gidwitz, of blessed memory. In 1969, Mr. Gidwitz wrote in a prophetic memo: “… we must make a serious effort to make today’s plans fit not only today’s community needs, but they should be coordinated with tomorrow’s projected needs as well… therefore, we must make an attempt to project our needs for a reasonable period into the future.”

Indeed, what we know now is that fulfilling our mission can be difficult, especially during challenging times such as the recent state budget impasse. But thanks to the hard work and contributions of countless individuals, many who are here tonight, we have also accomplished so much. This past year, we have offered a growing number of Holocaust survivors more life-sustaining services; provided 40,000 rides on our Shalom buses to Adult Day Services, doctor appointments or grocery stores; delivered almost 80,000 meals to hungry seniors; and helped 392 seniors recover and go home after a shortterm rehab stay at Lieberman Center. With your help, these essential programs will continue for another 45 years! Our efforts are redoubled through the contribution of our volunteers, the Jewish United Fund, community and business partners, generous foundations, families and individuals. We thank you for your trust and partnership so together we can enhance the lives of older adults. We also invite you to get to know us even better. As we share our challenges and successes with you, we hope you will learn even more about our vision for the health and well-being of our community’s seniors. To all our Board Chairs—on behalf of our staff and the people we serve—your commitment to CJE is incredible, immeasurable and deeply appreciated. Life Enrichment

CJE’s programs and services in our residences and the community provide an enriched mind, body, spirit and cultural experience for older adults. Our philosophy: staying active and “engaged with life” is an important component of healthy aging. CENTER FOR HEALTHY LIVING (CHL)

CHL helps older adults link to community resources, make informed choices about aging issues and maintain their physical, mental and social well-being. Lifelong learning, health screenings and cultural/social events help them lead healthy, independent lives. RELIGIOUS LIFE SERVICES

Recognizing that a healthy spiritual life is the foundation for the health and wellness of older adults, CJE SeniorLife offers a wide range of spiritual, religious and cultural programs in our residential settings. Pastoral Care is provided by our full-time certied chaplain. Shabbat and holiday services are conducted at a number of CJE locations. CJE works closely with many community clergy and places of worship to reach out to their congregants in need of eldercare services. We also partner in NorthShore University HealthSystem’s Jewish Hospice Program. VOLUNTEERING

More than 2,000 volunteers provide vital services to clients including participating in activities, delivering meals and visiting at-risk seniors.

Supportive Resources

A wide range of programming and services provides support and direct services to family members, caregivers and older adults to promote aging in place at home and in the community. ADULT DAY SERVICES (ADS)

ADS offers supervised, structured programs for people with Alzheimer’s or related disorders, as well as those who are frail or socially isolated. A group setting maximizes each participant’s potential by promoting autonomy, creativity and self-esteem. CJE’s ADS programs are offered in downtown Chicago, Evanston and Deereld.

WEINBERG COMMUNITY FOR SENIOR LIVING

A state-licensed campus in Deereld that offers several levels of care while embracing Jewish culture. Assisted Living

Gidwitz Place features one- and two-bedroom apartments for older adults who require a supportive environment yet still wish to live as independently as possible. Amenities include personal care services, housekeeping, kosher restaurant-style dining, a full schedule of activities, respite care and registered nurse on site 24/7. Memory Care

The Friend Center for Memory Care is a home-like residence for people with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders. Residents enjoy spacious private rooms, assistance with bathing and grooming, stimulating activities and kosher meals. The Bernard Heerey Annex has ve elegant suites and an expanded area for Adult Day Services programming. Respite care is also available. CONSUMER ASSISTANCE (CA)

CA staff in Chicago and the northwest suburbs provide free information, resources and advocacy on issues that impact older adults, including consumer benets, community services, public assistance, Medicare, Social Security, housing referrals, and transportation. Russian-speaking staff available. FOOD SERVICES

Food Services delivers kosher meals through Home-Delivered Meals to older adults. CJE also offers weekly delivery of freshfrozen meals via our Kosher to Go® program, as well as kosher catering. All is cRc approved, except catering from Weinberg Community, which is rabbinically-supervised kosher. HOLOCAUST COMMUNITY SERVICES (HCS)

HCS provides support and services to Holocaust survivors and their family members. INDEPENDENT LIVING

CJE SeniorLife owns and operates subsidized and affordable apartment buildings for older adults who qualify for government-subsidized housing. Robineau Residence is a groupliving residence for 24 older adults, with supportive services available as needed.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation on a CJE Shalom Bus offers limited service based on availability. YOUR ELDERCARE CONSULTANTS (YEC)

YEC is a team of geriatric care management professionals who assess and consult with older adults and their families as they experience the transitions of aging. Acting as liaisons to family caregivers, Your Eldercare Consultants coordinate service delivery, guide decision-making and monitor care. Clutter Management and Organization and Bill Paying Services available. New Just in Case service lets you plan ahead for back-up care. For more information, see YourEldercareConsultants.com.

Healthcare

CJE provides programming and facility settings that address both post-acute and chronic medical and psycho-social needs in coordination with the larger healthcare system. CJE COUNSELING SERVICES

Counseling from CJE’s licensed clinical social workers is available to older adults and their families, along with a variety of support groups. The Linkages Program assists seniors who are primary caregivers of adult children with disabilities.

LIEBERMAN CENTER FOR HEALTH AND REHABILITATION

Conveniently located near Old Orchard in Skokie with 240 private rooms, Lieberman provides residential long-term care, short-term rehabilitation and a dementia special care unit. Hospice and respite care are also available. Services available to all residents include peritoneal dialysis, infusion, pain management and wound care, as well as creative arts, therapeutic, recreational and spiritual programs. Kosher dining is approved by the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc). Short-Term Rehabilitation

An in-patient unit that serves patients after hospitalization, providing physical, occupational and speech therapy primarily to Medicare-certied patients. A newly-renovated Rehab & Fitness Center offers the latest in equipment. Special programs include: Center for Heart Health, Orthopedic Recovery, Stroke Recovery, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Hematology and Oncology, Medically and Surgically Complex Care. Free Lieberman +30 program helps to ease transition back home. Hemodialysis is available. Long-Term Skilled Nursing

We provide a high level of medical care over the long-term for patients who need frequent care for chronic conditions. Our long term care features specialty care for Parkinson’s and Dementia care. Palliative and Hospice care are also available.

Research and Education

CJE enables the study and assessment of new methods and models of care and the training of professionals to advance the delivery of high quality services and programming. APPLIED RESEARCH

The Leonard Schaneld Research Institute (LSRI) conducts social and applied research in the eld of aging that provides the catalyst for new and innovative program development.
