ANNUAL REPORT 2022
#CJEis50

Annual Message

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to share our Annual Report and give you a glimpse into a year of transformation for CJE SeniorLife. We continue to adapt in the aftermath of the pandemic and have grown from the challenges that ultimately have made us a stronger organization. We have updated our vision to respond to the evolving needs and desires of older adults and their families and are developing and implementing new ways to better serve our clients and residents. We are inspired about what lies ahead.

This past year, CJE also reached a significant milestone. We commemorated our 50th anniversary and honored the work and people of this extraordinary organization. We celebrated the 800 older adults who call CJE residences home, as well as the programs and services that touch 20,000 seniors and those who love and care for them. And we celebrated the generosity and commitment of our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, the Federation, and donors. Together, we have made an impact in the lives of older adults and CJE a leader in providing quality health and human services for 50 years.

Great strides have been made towards realizing our new vision. We have begun to implement better ways to interact with our clients that focuses on identifying all the services and supports necessary for them to grow older in the ways they wish. This is a client-centric approach rather than a service-centric approach. We are building structure and processes that align with the changing needs of older adults and families. We collaborated and engaged with our staff, adopted new technology and tools, and developed new roles, all with the goal of improving our clients’ experience.

This report illustrates how the power of our mission and our team’s passion for helping older adults and their families continued to be demonstrated this year. You will learn how we expanded and streamlined our programs and services, welcomed new residents, introduced a new approach to dementia training, and celebrated our 50th year. This is just a small sample of the breadth of programs and services that we provide every day, and we hope this insight will help you understand how much we have accomplished together.

Our efforts are due to the support we receive from our partners, the most important of which is the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. We are also indebted to the many organizations, foundations, families, and individuals who support our Mission—we are honored to have earned your trust.

As we define the next chapter for CJE, we are excited for the future of our agency and know that together we will keep CJE at the forefront of services for older adults for the next 50 years.

With our sincere gratitude,

Supporting a New Vision for Our Continuum of Services

This milestone year was the perfect opportunity to look back on what we have accomplished as an agency— and look ahead to how we will support older adult services in the future. In response to the changing needs of the older adults and families we serve, CJE crafted a new vision: To help older adults live better every day connected to the community of their choice with access to trusted care and a full range of services, rooted in Jewish values.

CJE is committed to improving the lives of older adults through the challenges that come with growing older, and helping meet their needs by providing easy access to our continuum of services. Our dedicated staff continues to advocate for our clients and residents, connect them to resources, and work to coordinate their care. CJE’s new, single clinical intake system connects older adults and their families to our full range of services, which includes benefits assistance, legal services, care management, counseling, homedelivered meals, housing, and more.

We are excited to share highlights of the progress we have made to support our vision over the past year— from embracing new procedures and technology to introducing and refreshing our innovative programs and

services. And, of course, while we continued to move forward with our important work, we also took some time to celebrate the agency’s accomplishments and our 50th anniversary!

EMBRACING NEW TECHNOLOGY

Most notably, we have put into place new procedures and technology to help support our vision. We started by adding new tools to help make it easier for our clients to connect to CJE. The first is a platform called Appletree Answers. This service provides us with an offsite receptionist—a real person!—to answer the phone at times when our team is unavailable or after regular business hours. The experience for the caller is much better because they don’t have to go through layers of voice mail or several departments before receiving the information they are seeking. This addition has already made a positive impact and we are finding our clients appreciate the improved communication.

We have also begun using a scheduling platform called Calendly. This program improves the process of scheduling appointments with clients by reducing the amount of phone calls and time—and helping us to get in front of our clients faster.

Both tools were put into place to make it easier for clients to access CJE’s services and more efficient for our teams to communicate with them. But what has really made the difference is our staff. We have restructured responsibilities and roles to better align with our new vision. We now have a CJE Concierge and an Intake Services team!

CJE CONCIERGE & INTAKE SERVICES

When older adults and their family members call our main line or walk through our doors, they are now greeted by a CJE Concierge. The Concierge’s role is to help make sure a client “gets to the right place”— making it easy to navigate our continuum of services from the first engagement. While the Concierge serves as a receptionist, many days of the week they are also out in the community or engaging in our virtual programs as educators, giving them an opportunity to meet with and get to know older adults in a more comfortable setting.

We also developed a full Intake Services team to assess the needs of our new and returning clients. Many older adults and their family members contact us when they have concerns or questions about

3

caregiving, assistance in the home, housing, finances, health insurance, access to government benefits, or emotional or mental health supports. Our Intake Services team, comprised of social workers, evaluates a client’s situation and connects them with services for their immediate and long-term needs, be it from CJE or another community resource.

We can get a more in-depth understanding and better address a client’s primary concerns, and oftentimes help identify other areas of CJE that might also benefit them, adding to and better connecting their care team—making the process easier and less stressful for older adults and their families.

CJE LEGAL SERVICES

Earlier this year, CJE was awarded a $64,275 Direct Service Grant by RRF Foundation for Aging to create the CJE Legal Help Desk, which provided pro bono legal services to older adults age 60+. Due to the high demand for such services, the program evolved into the Irving H. and Jane W. Goldberg Legal Services at CJE, which began offering free legal consultation, advice, and referrals, and drafting legal documents for older adults and those caring for them.

Our team is available for in-person, telephone, or virtual appointments to assist with civil legal matters. Services are available to those age 60+ and residing in Illinois, and include advance care planning, powers of attorney, last wills and testaments, living wills and medical directives, landlord/tenant questions, mortgage guidance, bankruptcy information, community legal referrals, and advocacy and problem solving.

This program is generously funded by The Albert and Lucille Delighter and Marcella Winston Foundation, Irving H. and Jane W. Goldberg Legal Services at CJE, Niles Township Government, and RRF Foundation for Aging, a national foundation dedicated to improving the quality of life of older people.

DEMENTIA REALITY™

CJE SeniorLife partnered with Elderwerks Educational Services, a Chicago-based nonprofit eldercare service provider, and Toronto-based VR Vision to create a dementia training program like no other. Dementia Reality™ is the first virtual reality dementia training program that combines skills training with real-life obstacles in a virtual environment. Participants will earn CEUs upon completion of the program.

Unique to Dementia Reality is the immersive experience that utilizes the power of virtual reality technology to create a deeper understanding of the challenges of clients living with dementia and how to help them. It also considers the professional caregiver’s feelings and helps them to develop greater empathy and connection to their clients. Not only will this training better meet the needs of our clients and residents, but it also fulfills our mission of improving the lives of the older adults and family members we serve.

CJE introduced this exciting, new educational tool to colleagues and other senior care professionals at the product launch at the LeadingAge Illinois Conference in Schaumburg and later at Tamarisk NorthShore. Industry experts donned virtual reality goggles to immerse themselves in the training experience, and they were thrilled to learn about this program and its advancements to better train professional caregivers helping individuals living with dementia. One attendee describes the experience: “The visual makes you feel like you are encapsulated in it. It is like you are there with the resident and caregiver. This is a great new tool in the care of seniors.”

ADULT DAY SERVICES—EVANSTON

CJE’s Adult Day Services—Evanston (ADS) provides programming to individuals living with dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and related conditions across varied stages. After our ADS in Evanston program temporarily relocated to a newly renovated space at Village Center in Skokie last year, construction for an innovative, 60-unit affordable housing development and renovations to the existing Evanston site on Howard Street continued this year.

Improvements to the ADS in Evanston building include a lobby reconfiguration to enhance security and overall functionality, HVAC upgrades, and roof and masonry work, which will allow CJE to continue using the space to enrich the lives of countless older adults through programs that integrate memory support and socialization for many years to come. While the two buildings will also have separate, secured front entrances, ADS staff and clients will also have access to the residential building’s second-floor outdoor terrace. Evergreen even drew inspiration from the public art installation on the exterior of the existing ADS building—a mosaic tree mural created by our ADS staff, clients, and volunteers known as “Together We Grow.” The new housing community incorporates some of the

same earth tones and includes its own green wall along the south facade of the building.

CJE’s unique partnership with Evergreen Real Estate Group pairs much-needed affordable senior housing and support services together in the same location—a model that can be replicated elsewhere in the Chicago area and across the country. As an agency focused on meeting the needs of older adults and their families, this initiative is perfectly aligned with CJE’s mission. The fact that the new affordable housing building shares a campus with our highly-regarded Adult Day Services program is the proverbial icing on the cake.

CJE’S DEERFIELD CAMPUS

Did you know that CJE offers a stellar continuum of services on one campus in Deerfield? Weinberg Community for Senior Living and Tamarisk NorthShore both provide a vibrant lifestyle with an abundance of life enrichment programming, flexible dining, and wellness classes—along with beautiful outdoor spaces, modern apartments, and caring staff. This year, our Deerfield campus residents were especially delighted by top-notch dining experiences, stellar musical performances, art showcases, educational excursions, and more.

Our welcoming communities in Deerfield give residents and their loved ones the peace of mind of knowing there is access to additional services if needed.

Gidwitz Place for Assisted Living at Weinberg Community provides exceptional health and personal care services in a warm and supportive environment. With amenities like daily life enrichment activities, housekeeping, medication reminders, transportation, a 24-hour onsite nurse, fitness center, and restaurantstyle dining, residents enjoy worry-free living. To ensure a personal and flexible service plan, we take the time to review the needs of our residents, which we recognize may change over time.

The Friend Center for Memory Care at Weinberg Community recognizes the special needs of people living with Alzheimer’s disease or other cognitive or memory impairments. The carefully planned atmosphere and well-trained staff help our residents maintain a strong sense of independence and comfort. Amenities include home-like private rooms which can be personalized, three meals a day, life enrichment, social activities, and 24-hour nursing care. Our professionals understand an individual’s evolving needs and are committed to preserving dignity.

5

Tamarisk NorthShore, managed by CJE SeniorLife, is an independent living community for active older adults, age 65 and better. Adjacent to Weinberg Community, it offers 240 elegant rental apartments that include modern finishes, fully- equipped kitchens, washer/dryer, and walk-in closets. An expansive amenity package provides 24-hour concierge service, housekeeping, indoor pool, yoga and fitness studio, three dining venues, outside terraces, library/business center, art studio, theatre, life enrichment programming, garage parking, and transportation.

Celebrating Our 50th Anniversary

CJE SeniorLife honored the past, celebrated the present, and began building our agency’s future through many golden anniversary events this year— and there was an event for everyone! CJE extends a heartfelt thank you to our 50th Anniversary Planning Committee and Celebrate CJE Committee for spearheading terrific celebrations and making this a fantastic, memorable milestone year for the agency and our community.

CJE Hosts Virtual Educational Event Exclusively for Alumni Staff, Staff, Alumni Board, Board, and Volunteers. The social and educational event on April 26 honored CJE’s long history of caring for older adults and their families, celebrated how we provide care today, and looked at how we’re building the future of eldercare. Speakers included Donna Pezzuto, alumni staff and former Vice President of Healthy Aging, Sharon Dornberg-Lee, Clinical Supervisor, Counseling Services, and Jodi Portnoy, Director of Strategy and Transformation Projects, with Julius Pearson, Vice President of People and Culture, moderating.

CJE hosted an enlightening presentation on May 18 featuring Louise Aronson, MD, MFA, a noted Harvard-trained geriatrician, and author of Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, and Reimagining Life. More than 400 people attended this virtual event to learn about embracing elderhood, a term Aronson coined for this stage of life.

CJE Summer Camp. Employees agency-wide marked the occasion with summer camp-themed picnics at both our corporate offices located at the Bernard Horwich JCC in Chicago and our Deerfield campus—featuring karaoke, a life-sized board game, art projects, a photo booth, a delicious buffet, and more!

Hitting a High Note. Weinberg Community residents and families were treated to a concert by the Lyric Opera Stage Artists!

Festival of Generations Brings Summer Fun for the Whole Family. CJE staff, residents, and the community enjoyed live music by the Grammy Awardwinning, American Jewish rock band Soulfarm, fantastic food, and fun activities for all ages on CJE’s Deerfield campus on August 14.

Comedian Rita Rudner Headlines Celebrate CJE. One of the country’s top comedians, Rita Rudner, brought her sharp wit and genius one-liners to CJE’s annual fundraising gala at The Westin Chicago North Shore in Wheeling on September 18. CJE also honored Donna Kahan with the Abraham Joshua Heschel Professional Services Award and the Albert and Lucille Delighter, Marcella Winston Foundation and Bernard Heerey Family Foundation with the 50th Anniversary Philanthropic Award.

The Council for Jewish Elderly (dba CJE SeniorLife) Endowment Foundation was created in partnership with the JUF Chicago’s Agency Endowment Program, which was established to ensure that CJE SeniorLife and our sister agencies have the necessary resources to meet the community’s needs. All commitments to CJE’s Endowment Foundation are recognized as gifts to the JUF Chicago’s Centennial Campaign.

CJE SeniorLife is also proud to have been part of the JUF Chicago’s Create a Jewish Legacy program, designed to train and support Chicago Jewish day schools, agencies and synagogues in the area of legacy giving.
