Viewpoint Dear Reader,

Like the light through a prism, we have all had to bend to the times that we now face. Not only have we bent, but we have stretched on a personal and professional level to challenge ourselves to create, innovate, and reassess volunteer opportunities at CJE SeniorLife. In collaborative efforts with other departments, many of our volunteers have been able to adapt their presentations into online offerings. Others have tapped into their creativity and talents to give back to our older adults in new ways, such as teaching Yiddish or narrating a video about a different country. This means volunteers are accessible to more clients and residents than they ever were before. Together, we are broadening our reach into the community.

The biggest shift was made by Home-Delivered Meals drivers who are volunteers. They took on extra work by also becoming friendly callers. The drivers were asked to call the same clients on their route, furthering their relationships. In addition, one of the bright spots to occur during this pandemic has been that several new groups have contacted us to see how they could help CJE provide support to vulnerable seniors. This came in the form of nursing students making friendly calls, individuals making over 400 masks, and young students creating handmade greetings to send messages of joy and hope to every resident.

As a team, the staff in Volunteer Services has adapted and stretched as professionals. Each of us can also share personal stories of growth. This time has allowed us to discover our ability to pivot and be extraordinarily creative, an essential skill for now and the future. We’ve talked about re-visioning the role of volunteers rather than dwelling on what used to be. We’ve likened this to the light going into the prism: It may not produce the results we expected, but what does come out on the other side is often more compelling and beautiful than we might have imagined. As always, our volunteers continue to be a vibrant resource throughout our multifaceted organization. With a diverse set of talents, and abundant dedication, they are vital to furthering the mission of CJE. With sincere thanks,

Barbara Milsk Manager, Volunteer Services

PROMOTING HEALTHY AGING AT TAMARISK NORTHSHORE By Mary Keen Tamarisk NorthShore (TNS)—240 elegant apartment homes in Deerfield—offers tastefully elegant surroundings, a convenient location, and enviable management by CJE SeniorLife. It is a vibrant community, and its desirable amenities and full complement of Life Enrichment activities are indeed something to boast about. Appealing to residents who desire the added value of personalized lifestyle choices, Tamarisk certainly delivers. A focus on Life Enrichment has always been the centerpiece of CJE’s programming. As an organization we know that staying engaged and active keeps people healthier as they age. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cites a recent study* that found isolation and poor social relationships are associated with an increased risk of dementia (50%), heart disease (29%), and stroke (32%). The CDC recommends people connect to community resources and utilize healthcare interventions to prevent such loneliness.

CJE CYBER CLUB LAUNCHES INTERACTIVE CULTURAL SERIES By Nicole Bruce

Join us for a walking tour of Chicago landmarks, an invigorating concert, or an Israel-inspired creative arts experience… and more!

After months of staying at home and attending meetings, presentations and events online, you’re probably a little exhausted from staring at a computer screen to connect with other humans. CJE’s Community Engagement team recognizes the need for more meaningful, engaging virtual programs that will take older adults out into the world and offer new interactive experiences. To counteract what’s been deemed “Zoom fatigue,” they’re invigorating CJE’s Cyber Club by adding unique programs into the weekly lineup that will give participants more time to “meet each other” while participating in innovative cultural experiences. “Over the past several months, we’ve been getting valuable feedback from our Cyber Club participants. It’s going to be a tough winter, and people are looking for ways to combat Zoom fatigue and increasing feelings of loneliness. So, we are responding to their needs by providing more of what they’re looking for,” said Catherine Samatas, CJE’s Community Engagement Manager. New live virtual programs will include field trips to local landmarks, concerts, art-making projects, mindfulness groups, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) talks, timely book discussions, as well as cooking, fitness, and language classes like French and Yiddish.

Starting in the fall, the Community Engagement team pivoted their focus and began taking CJE’s Cyber Club participants out into the world through live virtual field trips. Through CJE’s My Go-To Place programs with JCC Chicago and Niles Township, CJE’s Cyber Club is now hosting interactive virtual walking tours of popular and off-the-beaten path Chicago landmarks, including museums, special exhibits, Virtu historic homes, and downtown al hotspots. Led by museum docents and other subject experts, these Zoom field trips will explore history, culture, and art topics and then let participants ask questions during the live online discussions and tours. According to Samatas, “Every virtual field trip that we plan will have a live docent so participants can ask questions along the way. We’re only doing tours that allow for that kind of interaction, so it’s not just watching a video.” They have already visited the Ruth Bader Ginsberg exhibit at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, strolled along the Chicago Riverwalk with the Chicago Architecture Center, and explored the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum. Next up… participants can expect more architecture tours, a guided tour of Broadway musical history by the decade with Porchlight Music Theatre and trips to other exciting sites like the International Museum of Surgical Science, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Edwin H. Cheney House, the National Museum of Mexican Art, and the Sheldon Peck Homestead, Check online for the latest upcoming tours through CJE’s Cyber Club at cje.net/virtualtours.

Israel-Focused Music and Art Programs

Older adults will be able to immerse themselves in the timeless sights and sounds of Israel through Community Engagement’s new program, Next Year In Jerusalem (often sung in Hebrew “L’Shana Haba’ah B’Yerushalyim”), funded with a special grant from the Consulate General of Israel to the Midwest in Chicago. Through music and history discussions and guided creative art sessions (beginners welcome!), the program aims to connect older adults with Israel. “Our Instant Israel program helped people travel to Israel through virtual reality before the pandemic halted our in-person programming, so we’re excited to still be able to take people to Israel virtually for musical performances and arts with a traditional Jewish focus,” said Samatas. Join CJE’s Cyber Club for guided art and writing sessions inspired by the music and history of the land. Enjoy special musical performances by Yonina—the Israel-based duo will be streaming performances from various locations in Israel. Art with Abby Maeir and writing with Alice Moody, who will be leading projects tied to traditional Israeli arts, are also planned.

Lyric Opera Concert Series

In addition to performances by Israeli musicians, volunteers from the Lyric Opera Stage Artists and Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra are graciously performing a series of live virtual concerts for CJE’s Cyber Club participants. Lyric Opera musicians are showcasing some of their favorite songs for older adults at home through Zoom and will continue to do so until they can perform in person again. “Cyber Club participants are really enjoying the music programs. It’s been one of our most popular genres of virtual programs. Bringing even more music offerings to Cyber Club through our new partnership with the Lyric Opera is our response to that growing demand,” said Samatas.

Academic Talks

CJE’s Community Engagement team is also focused on offering even more high-quality learning experiences for Cyber Club participants. A partnership with One Day University®, an organization that runs live-streamed and on-demand lectures with well-known, engaging speakers, gives CJE access to hundreds of educational talks on history, business, arts, and politics. “We hope to use these talks as launch points for conversations in our own Cyber Club programs. We’re looking into utilizing these experts—from music to theater to history genres— and finding our own volunteers and other speakers with extensive knowledge in the genres to lead discussions with our participants and give their personal take on the topic,” explains Samatas. “It’d be fun to host a talk on Frank Sinatra and the mob or Jewish composers through Hollywood based on some of the private lectures we have access to.” Students from Loyola University Chicago’s Master of Arts in Medical Sciences program are leading a new, bimonthly STEM program called “Let’s Talk About Science and Medicine” through CJE’s Cyber Club. CJE’s extern Mikaela Johnson led the first engaging virtual talk, “The Life of Pandemics: The Worst Pandemics in History,” and future educational topics are sure to inspire the most curious Cyber Club participants.

Volunteers Dish Up Their Culinary Secrets

For those interested in learning to make easy recipes that won’t break the bank, long-time friends and CJE SeniorLife volunteers Suzanne and Cristyne invite chefs of all skill levels into their kitchens for cooking tips and techniques with Cyber Club’s new “What’s Cooking?” classes. Participants will receive weekly recipes and ingredient lists with advance registration. Discover delicious and nutritious—and refreshingly simple— recipes and cook right along with them!

FOR THE HEALTH OF IT

HOW LONELY ARE YOU? IT MATTERS FOR YOUR HEALTH! Margaret Danilovich, PhD, Senior Director Leonard Schanfield Research Institute

“Find yourself a teacher, acquire for yourself a friend.”

—Pirkei Avot 1:6

According to the ancient rabbinic tradition, it has been clear that having others around us is necessary for good health and well-being. But, unfortunately, the current pandemic has thrown society into a world of social isolation as physical distancing guidelines are necessary for safety. Especially for older adults, who have accounted for 78% of all coronavirus-related deaths, the need to be alone and to isolate can be a matter of life or death.

Research shows the adverse health impacts of social isolation, defined as the objective absence of social interactions, contacts, and relationships with family and friends. Social isolation, which impacts about 25% of older adults living in the community, can lead to loneliness—a self-reported distressing feeling of being alone or separated. Social isolation and loneliness are different concepts; a person can feel lonely despite being surrounded by others and a person can be by themselves, yet not feel lonely. Interesting new research finds that loneliness may impact our bodies at a basic cellular level. Work by Dr. Steve Cole at UCLA shows that feelings of loneliness actually change our immune system cells leading to higher levels of inflammation. Over time, this inflammation leads to an increased risk for chronic disease, cancer, and early death. Sadly, a study

conducted at Florida State University found that these cellular changes associated with loneliness contribute to a 40% increased risk for dementia. The evidence is clear—to avoid disease and disability and to age well, we all should avoid loneliness and stay engaged to prevent isolation. (See Screening Tool to determine your loneliness.)

Numerous approaches exist to decrease isolation and loneliness that may also improve health. Interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (offered through CJE Counseling Services) has shown to reduce social isolation. Digital social connection (offered through our Community Engagement Department’s CJE Cyber Club) is another promising intervention to help people stay connected to prevent loneliness, while keeping physically distant. And importantly, physical distancing does not mean you have to stay inside and be sedentary. Going outside for a walk or joining one of CJE’s Zoom and telephone-based exercise classes are fantastic ways to engage and stay active in a physically distant manner to meet the CDC recommendation of 150 minutes of physical activity/ exercise each week to maintain physical health.

The message for generations has been clear: we should not be alone! For your best health, engage with family and friends, volunteer and join new online or telephone programs to meet new people and make new connections, and seek out supportive services like counseling or physical activity programming to address loneliness and improve your physical and mental health.

Find Out Where You Rank on the Loneliness Scale

Answer the questions below using the scale provided, then and add up your points. Higher scores indicate more loneliness and the need to connect with others.

UCLA Three Item Loneliness Scale Answer Scale: Point(s) Hardly Ever = 1 pt. | Some of the Time = 2 pts. | Often = 3 pts. How often do you feel that you lack companionship? How often do you feel left out? How often do you feel isolated from others? Total Points = Loneliness Rate (9=Most Lonely/3=Least Lonely)

GIVING A BIG BOOST TO HEARING ABILITY WITH EVERSOUND By Mary Keen

“The wireless Eversound® headphone system helps our residents hear clearly during family visits, care conversations, and group activities and events. It is a wonderful device that has been extremely helpful to them.” —Patient Care Staff, Lieberman Center for Health and Rehabilitation

Weinberg Community and Lieberman Center have recently implemented the use of Eversound among its residents, an advanced portable amplification system that helps many persons with hearing loss, medical conditions, and dementia to hear better. By amplifying sound, the system helps residents who have a hearing disability stay better connected. By virtue of enhanced hearing, residents may understand more and thus become better engaged in their surroundings—important for avoiding isolation and depression. The system has been found to reduce stress and improve speech and cognitive skills among residents. Eversound is not only extremely useful for amplifying family and caregiver conversations and group programming, it also helps promote safe visits and meetings by enabling physical distancing—so important during these times. That’s because it can be used over a long distance—from about 200 to 300 feet. So, for family visits, everyone can be physically distanced without participants needing to shout to be heard.

How It Works. The ergonomic Eversound system includes comfortable wireless headsets with a simple volume adjustment. Second parties, like family or staff members, are equipped with a microphone. Their speech is amplified by the system and the resident adjusts the level of amplification, making it tailored to each person’s hearing needs. Besides being used one-on-one, the system can be set up for a small group activity, like Art Therapy, by using as many as ten headsets at once. Residents can also enjoy live streamed events and on-demand videos in group settings. That way, they can all be tuned in at their preferred volume, reducing the need to have the TV “blaring” for those with major hearing loss.

LIFE

www.cje.net

How Eversound Transforms Daily Life

Residents, Friends, and Family Interactions: Visits are simplified, promoting meaningful interactions by reducing anxiety and frustration caused by not being able to hear properly. Caregiver Communications: With improved hearing, residents are empowered to be active participants in their care, thus improving care delivery and reducing resistance.

Group Activities: Eversound enables most residents to participate at their own level of hearing need. This helps provide enhanced engagement in group programs like movies, classes, and other activities.

Prospective Resident Tours: These can become more fulfilling and informative to the prospective residents, who are able to hear and understand the tour and conversation, and, thus, participate in the decision-making process.
