WEINBERG COMMUNITY FOR SENIOR LIVING GIDWITZ PLACE FOR ASSISTED LIVING | FRIEND CENTER FOR MEMORY CARE
A Message from the Director Welcome to our Winter Edition, Happy and Healthy New Year! We are in the middle of our bitter cold weather that has finally arrived. Our Annual New Years Party was a great success with over 80 residents attending. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment and food! We want to thank all of the residents and families who made donations to Resident ouncil for the staff holiday gifts. Employees received Target gift cards for the holidays in the amount of $145 to help them shop for their loved ones, and they were very much appreciated by all! Throughout the holiday season, we have also given back to our community in various community service programs. We have been working on stuffing adorable bears and other animals with many intergenerational groups such as the Dillar Teens (see front cover) and Shir Hadash. The bears are being donated to The Kellogg Cancer Center in Highland Park for kids who attend treatment with their family members, as well as to the Deerfield Police Station to help kids in need. On Monday, January 18th in honor of Martin Luther King Day, and as part of Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal’s "Give Where you Live Deerfield" program, our Weinberg Community participated in donating our pajamas and stuffed animals to be paired with fleece blankets made by various organizations to donate to people who are ill, homeless or are in crisis. We also donated lots of canned and boxed food items to Deerfield Township, which goes to those who are in need in our neighborhood. Thanks to staff, residents and families for all the wonderful collections this holiday season. It’s great to be able to give back to our community in so many ways! Please remember to think of us for any family or friends who would benefit from our community, whether it be for Gidwitz, Friend Center or our Adult Day Program! We appreciate any and all referrals! As always, I am available for anyone who wants to talk at any time, Jennifer Weininger Executive Director Of Weinberg Community for Senior Living 847-236-7856

GETTING TO KNOW YOU Jackie Levine Jackie has been a resident at Gidwitz Place for 5 years. She and her husband David had resided in Evanston for many years, and raised their 2 daughters there. She met David, who would become her husband for 62 years, at the University of Florida where she was a freshman, and he was 9 years older, an upperclassman whose education had been interrupted by service to his country in the Army.
Jackie and both daughters had worked for CJE. Jackie was in charge of transportation out of Howard Street. Amy was a nurse and Carol a social worker. Carol resides in Chicago, was a social worker for United Charities, and now teaches pre-school. Amy lives in Glenview, and —-showing what a small world it is—-Executive Director Jen Weininger, was the babysitter for Amy’s children. Jackie’s 5 grandchildren range in age from 18 to 31 years, and Theo, 1 1/2 years old, is the 1st great-grandchild. Raised in Peterson Park, the family moved to the Lakeview area, where she graduated from Lakeview High School. Jackie had one sister, Harriet. She is 9 years older and lives in California. When asked as to how Harriet is doing, Jackie responded “she’s dead.” This interchange brought peals of laughter from Jackie, as it sounded like a comedy routine. This defines her outlook on life to an extent, as she is able to see humor out of sadness and loss. Jackie is very well-liked, and has made close friendships. “I am very personable”, she says. Jackie attends religious Services when led by Sue Lewis, goes to the 2 p.m. programs, and Women’s Group. Outings are enjoyed on Wednesdays, including movies and lunches. Jackie has added a spark to Gidwitz Place.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU Jennie Levine Jennie was born on the west side of Chicago and had two brothers and two sisters. Jennie went to Manley High School. After high school graduation she went to work in an office where she worked as a secretary for many years. Her most noteworthy experience was when she worked for the Holocaust Museum when it was still a store front on Main Street. She met her husband of 45 years, Louis, at a hair salon where he worked. They were married at Zweig’s ballroom on Roosevelt Road. Jennie and her husband lived with Jennie’s parents for a while until they got an apartment. During this union they had two sons Gerald and Michael. She loved the library and used to push them in their strollers to the library often. She also took her children to Ladies’ Day at Wrigley Field during the time when women received free admission on Fridays. Jennie’s favorite programs at the Friend Center are balloon volleyball and bingo. She loves participating in art classes because she’s a talented painter. Her words of advice are to, “Take care of yourself and try not to ignore.” and “Do charitable work because that’s how to make a difference.”
