Dear Weinberg Families and Residents, Welcome to our Spring Edition! We just finished celebrating Passover and had a wonderful two nights of seder with many families and friends . A lot is happening here. We are excited about the upgrade to our Emergency Call System at both Gidwitz and Friend Center. Over the next several weeks, the installers will be replacing all residents’ pull cords and pendants. With this upgraded technology system, residents can call for help campus-wide. For example, if a resident is on the patio and needs assistance, their pendant will work. We are thrilled to have this project underway and will keep you updated! We are also excited to be remodeling some common areas at both the Friend Center and Gidwitz. We will keep residents informed of our schedule once it is finalized, but all the work will be worth it. We are looking forward to a beautifully remodeled dining room, social hall, and other common areas throughout our community. We’d like to remind you that we have outpatient therapy on site at Weinberg. We have a highly-motivating program for our residents designed to keep them active and interested in exercising on a daily basis. Physical, speech and occupational therapy are available to our residents and outside community members. This is covered under Medicare Part B, so please be sure to ask us for any information regarding this wonderful benefit! Keep an eye out for our emails and flyers. They will be about our upcoming events and we will be sending them out regularly. As a final reminder, don’t forget about our Resident Referral Program. If any resident or family member refers a resident to either Gidwitz Place or Friend Center and the person signs a one-year lease, the referring person will receive a check for $750.00. Our best referrals come from residents and friends, so please think of us! Feel free to call me with any suggestions at any time. Lester Spielman Lester has been a resident of Gidwitz Place for 2 1/2 years, moving from his Northbrook condo, but continuing to socialize with friends from that complex. He is very active in our residence and remains engaged in activities that he enjoyed prior to his move here. Lester attends performance of the Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera. He not only enjoys the Northbrook Symphony, but one of the highlights of his life was the opportunity to conduct it! He also attends all five formal dinner dances that the Shore Club holds each year at various north shore country clubs. Lester grew up in Albany Park, graduating from Roosevelt High School. He then attended Roosevelt University, earning a B.S. Degree. He continued on at the University of Illinois, where he received a Master Degree in Education. As a teacher in the Chicago Public School (CPS) system, he taught at Jenner, Budlong, and Anderson Educational and Vocational School, rising to principal at the latter. At Anderson, he oversaw a special program for underachievers and is proud to point out that participants of the program included such later successes as a physician, and attorney, and a state legislator! Lester met his future wife, Dorothy at a meeting of CPS principals They shared a happy marriage of 30 years, until Dorothy’s death in 2000. Lester retired at age 59 after a full career. In retirement, he spent time playing tennis and enjoying poker. Seven years ago his vision began to decline, and it continues to do. However, he does not allow this to stop him from having a full life. At Gidwitz Place, he attends religious services, exercise classes, Men’s Club meetings. He especially enjoys the 2:00 PM programs, which often include music. His good friend Enid is his dance partner, as well as a frequent companion to symphony and opera outings. Lester is a greatly-respected member of our community, and we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have him as a resident of Gidwitz.

Jonalyn Gumaya Jonalyn has been a Weinberg Community staff member since 2003. She began as a Resident Assistant at Gidwitz. After seven years, she was promoted to the position of Administrative Aide for Friend Center and Adult Day Service (ADS). Jonalyn’s many responsibilities include: scheduling, billing and communication with ADS families. An important duty Jonalyn performs is the scheduling of care plans for Friend Center residents and their families. She also maintains and updates pertinent information for our records and face sheets. Also, for those who come to our residence through the Friend Center entrance, they are immediately greeted by her friendly face and welcome. Born in the Philippines and the middle child in a family of nine children, Jonalyn came to the United States at age 20. She obtained her GED and went on to receive an Associates Degree in Medical Billing. She plans to obtain a Master’s Degree in this field. On a personal note, Jonalyn met her husband Sherman Gumaya in 1998, and they got married in 2005. Sherman worked for a time at Weinberg, and he is now the Building Manager at Lieberman. Jonalyn and Sherman are the ecstatic parents of eight month old twin boys named Dan and Jayden. After Jonalyn gave birth prematurely at the 29th week of pregnancy, the tiny babies weighed in at only 2 lbs. each. Now, both are a healthy 15 lbs. and are on track to meet all developmental milestones for babies their age. Gidwitz staff regards Dan and Jayden as part of our family, and we are extremely thankful and pleased that they triumphed over their difficult entry into this world and grew into such adorable, active little boys. We consider ourselves very lucky to have Jonalyn and her family as part of our family.
