The Weinberg Chatter, Fall 2013

FALL 2013

Dear Weinberg Families and Residents, Welcome to our Fall Edition! We have been busy as usual over the last several months. In August, our Parkinson’s Art Fair was held and our artists did a wonderful job presenting their art work. CJE had our team walk in the Alzheimer’s walk held in the Glen on Sept. 21st. It was a beautiful day and we had a wonderful time walking to make others aware of this disease. Our team raised over $5,000. Thank you to those who contributed to our team’s success! The high holidays came and went and we enjoyed having so many of our families join us for services and holiday dinners. The residents are always happy to see guests visiting! The annual Weinberg Maj Jong tournament was also held in October, where approximately 80 community members joined us for a fun day of Maj Jong and a delicious brunch hosted by our community and the Northbrook Senior Center. I want to wish Victoria Masyukova a Mazel Tov on becoming employee of the year for our organization. Each year employees from CJE SeniorLife ( approximately 700 employees ) are nominated from fellow colleagues and 3 are selected that represent our spirit, passion and compassion for others that reflect CJE’s missions and values. Victoria has done an exceptional job with the residents in so many life enrichment programs such as theater and creative art programming. Just as a reminder, we have outpatient therapy on site at Weinberg. We have a highly motivating program for our residents which will keep them active and interested in exercising on a daily basis. Keep your eye out for our emails and flyers that we will be sending on our upcoming events. As a reminder, we have our resident referral program. If any resident or family member refers a resident to either Gidwitz or Friend Center and the person signs a 1 year lease, you will receive a check for $750.00. Our best referrals come from you, so please think of us! Feel free to call me with any suggestions at any time. Jennifer Weininger– Director Of Weinberg Community for Senior Living 847-236-7856

A few reminders: Please sign in at the front desk, and sign out when leaving—-we need to insist on this for the safety of our residents and staff. Please obtain a form at the front desk when going out of town, and indicate an emergency contact for when you are away. You can alternately call front desk to give the above information, and it will be sent to pertinent staff. If you have a private caregiver working for you, please make sure we are aware of this. If your family member is in the hospital and will be going to a rehab facility, please advise us, to guarantee continuity of care. If you bring your pet to our building, please make sure that he/she is on a leash at all times.

We want to wish Jonalyn and Sherman Gumaya (who work in engineering and administration) congratulations on the birth of their twin boys, Jayden and Dan. Both babies are finally home and doing great. We welcome them to our Weinberg family!

Please keep your eyes open for details on our upcoming, fun Resident's Elephant Sale. Date to be announced soon. Start thinking of those unwanted items for the sale now. One man's trash is another man's treasure!

On September 21st, CJE SeniorLife participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’sNorth Shore and raised a total of $5,719.09. Throughout the summer, Weinberg Community held fundraising events to help contribute to the Alzheimer’s Association goal of supporting individuals impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias. Weinberg residents and their families along with staff gave their time and made generous contributions to assist with this effort. The Weinberg Community appreciates all the support that was received and look forward to participating in the walk next year.

Shirley Garel Shirley is amongst the most active residents at Gidwitz, , continuing her lifelong love of learning and community participation. This became apparent when attempting to secure an hour of her time to glean information. Shirley has resided at Gidwitz for 3 years, returning to Chicago from Florida. Married for 56 yrs, and widowed for the past 13 years, a proud Westsider. Bryant, Emmet, Austin HS, Wright Jr College, SSA at The University of Chicago, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Social Work, and later a Master’s Degree in Special Ed from Northeastern Teachers College—WOW! Activities in which she participates are inclusive of drama, Songsters, Zumba, classes led by Sashie, Keith Kanter, and Rabbi Shorin ,—Women’s Group, Sue Lewis’s class, Book Group, Religious Services, Dontrel’s exercise classes. On Wednesdays Shirley leads a Yiddish discussion group-joined by 6 or 7 friends, using a Yiddish to English dictionary. Shirley met her husband when both were studying at Spertus—he was an attorney with the Social Security Administration—-she was a Special Ed teacher at Nile North H.S. for 12 years. Shirley has 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, all residing nearby. How fortunate that Shirley chose to live with us here at Gidwitz.

Karla Batres Karla has made quite an impression on staff and residents alike in the year she has been working as a wait staff member in the Gidwitz Dining Room. It is readily apparent that she likes and cares about all our residents, finding ways to approach even those residents who are not always open to socialization and cooperation. Her favorite shift is breakfast, because it is unhurried, with many residents lingering to visit with peers and staff. Karla was born in Mexico, coming to the US at age 4. English is her 2nd language, at which she is proficient. She is the middle child in a sib ship of 3. Both her parents have health problems, and Karla assists them for whatever their needs might be. Since graduating from Maine West H.S. she has had several jobs, selling insurance and used cars. Not so successful as a used car salesperson, she says—too honest! The profession she liked the most, prior to coming to Gidwitz, was working a a nanny. She did this in San Diego and Kildeer. Some of the same skills and personality traits that contributed to Karla being a wonderful caretaker of children carry over to her care of our residents. She has a reservoir of patience, compassion and sincerity . Whether hosting at dinner, taking menu requests, and delivering the meals, she greets all with a smile and respect. Regarded by Char and Ken, the Dining Room Directors, as a “people person”, she was chosen to participate in CJE’s Leadership Training, and was promoted to Supervisor. We are so fortunate to have Karla as a member of the Weinberg Community team.
