GIDWITZ PLACE FOR ASSISTED LIVING | FRIEND CENTER FOR MEMORY CARE

Welcome to our Spring Edition! It feels like yesterday that we sent out our winter edition and unfortunately it is still snowing as I write this one! Just a few of our highlights from the last few months include: The Leading Age conference in Schaumberg—This was a great opportunity for staff and board members to network with other leaders in the healthcare field. We will be sharing lots of ideas in the upcoming months with the rest of our team. The residents enjoyed a great performance by Pizmon, which is a group of about 15 singers. The concert included lots of songs, including a few Yiddish and some other Jewish pieces. The performers had the pleasure of visiting with residents after the performance which they all seemed to enjoy! In addition, U.S. Congressman Bob Dold spoke to our community mid-March and we had a packed house of both residents and family members who attended this event. He gave a brief overview on updates happening in Washington D.C., as well as health and long-term care programs. Purim was another recent celebration held with Rochelle Zell High School freshman students. Students and staff members dressed up in fabulous costumes. They visited both Gidwitz Place and Friend Center. As part of our ongoing Purim celebration, Friend Center residents enjoyed making their own hamantaschen and sharing it with our community. Passover is around the corner. You should have received my separate mailing a few weeks ago. I am hopeful that we will have many of our families joining us this year for one of our Seders at either Friend Center or Gidwitz! As a reminder, please make sure you send in reservation forms ahead of time so that we can have an accurate count for our Food Service Department. Look out for information coming soon about our Gidwitz 50’s-themed Memorial Day BBQ. We encourage all of you to attend and bring your family to help celebrate and enjoy lunch with us! Please remember to think of us if you have any family or friends who would benefit from our community—whether it be for Gidwitz, Friend Center or our Adult Day Program! We appreciate any and all referrals! As always, I am available for anyone who wants to talk at any time, Jennifer Weininger Executive Director Of Weinberg Community for Senior Living 847-236-7856

A few reminders: Please sign in at the front desk, and sign out when leaving—-we need to insist on this for the safety of our residents and staff. Please obtain a form at the front desk when going out of town, and indicate an emergency contact for when you are away. You can alternately call the front desk to give the above information, and it will be sent to pertinent staff. If you have a private caregiver working for you, please make sure we are aware of this. If your family member is in the hospital and will be going to a rehab facility, please advise us, to guarantee continuity of care. If you bring your pet to our building, please make sure that he/she is on a leash at all times.

As a reminder– If we do not have your current email address, please leave at the front desk with the receptionist or email Tawanna.shack@cje.net so that we can keep current information on file.

PRIVATE DUTY CAREGIVERS– Those families who have private caregivers please make sure that any new caregivers meet with Tawanna Shack or Jonalyn Gumaya to have paperwork complete. A current TB test will also be necessary for the current year and criminal background check. If you have a caregiver who currently works for agency this information can be provided by them. This also applies to any and all substitutes you may have working for your loved one. If we do not have updated information on file, they may be asked to leave.

Annie Horwitz Annie moved into Gidwitz Place 3 years ago, coming from her condo in Chicago. Her dear friend of 85 years had moved to Gidwitz, and this motivated Annie to do the same. She and her friend went to elementary and high school together, and both married in 1941. Annie is a well-known and wellthought-of resident. She lives an active life, playing bridge several times a week, going to Religious Services and socializing at meals. She is always the first one to offer a helping hand. She is part of a group that meets daily for 1-1/2 hours to play a penny card game called 10/30. Annie’s first marriage ended in divorce. She remarried in 1970 and was married for ten years until her second husband died in 1980. Annie characterizes that period as “the best 10 years of my life.” She moved to California in 1956. Her mother bought her a house near Wilshire Blvd. that had enough room to sleep seven people. The occupants were elderly, had a staff person during the week to cook and clean, with Annie taking over on the weekends. Annie—one of six children, with two brothers and three sisters—grew up on the West Side, attending Pope Elementary and Harrison High School. .Annie’s son Dennis lives in Arizona and Chicago. Her professional life has been centered around care facilities. She worked for several physicians and took medical courses and was trained to do EKGs, X-rays, and blood draws. Her brother owned Lakeshore Nursing Home in Chicago, and Annie did all the billing for his business. She became a claims expeditor for these types of facilities, retiring at age 82. What a dynamo! We are so fortunate to have Annie as part of our Weinberg Community.

Marlene Kornick Marlene (Marks) Kornick was born in Chicago to Ruth and Jim. She has one older sister by three years named Blanche. Marlene and Blanche used to love playing jump rope, ice skating, and going to the beach often, because they only lived one block away. Growing up, Marlene had crushes on actors Cary Grant and Gene Kelly. Marlene went to Sullivan High School, and, when she was 19-years-old, she met her first husband Norm Berkson at a dance. They married at the Orrington Hotel in Evanston. Her favorite quality about him was his “great sense of humor.” At their wedding they played her favorite song, “Because.” They had three children: Rabbi Jill Berkson Zimmerman (Ely), David Berkson and Keith Berkson (Lori.) She has four grandchildren. She is also very close with her niece and nephews: Nancy and Ted Gehrig and Jeff Goldsher and their children. Marlene worked in jewelry sales and had her own store, which she loved very much. Over the years, she has had many hobbies such as trading picture cards, making jewelry, crocheting, planting, gardening, ice skating, and playing Mah Jongg and card games like Pan, bridge and poker. She is also an incredible organizer and is known for her kreplach and matzo ball soup. Marlene met her second husband Sid through a friend. They got married when she was 60 at a beautiful outside ceremony. Her favorite thing about him was that he was “so sweet and kind.” They loved each other very much and unfortunately he died after they had been married only five years. When Marlene was about 50 years old she traveled to the Orient by herself. At the O’Hare airport, she started talking to a woman named Esther going on the same trip. They ended up spending the whole trip together and became the best of friends. She described this trip as her favorite place she has ever traveled. Marlene explained that she likes living at Weinberg because she enjoys having people around. Her advice to the world is “to always be kind and enjoy life to the fullest.”

Jackie Abramson Adult Day Service Coordinator Jackie is a valuable asset to the Weinberg Community. She began as a Creative Arts Therapist, then served as its Coordinator, and was recently promoted to Adult Day Services Coordinator. She has expanded that program many times over, engaging and offering support to attendees and their families. Raised in Northbrook, she was a Pom Pom girl at Glenbard North High School and part of a dance troupe that performed at Bar and Bat Mitvahs. She attended University of Colorado at Boulder and obtained a B.S. in Psychology. She then worked at a residential facility for traumatized children for two years, returning to the Chicago area to pursue a Master’s Degree in Dance Movement Therapies and Counseling at Columbia College. She now is a LPC-Licensed Professional Counselor and will soon have her LCPC–Clinical Counselor certification. Jackie’s grandfather Milt Altman resided at Gidwitz and died at age 106. Known as the oldest Cub fan, he was often photographed and written about. At her Bat Mitzvah, all four of her great-grandparents were in attendance. She is married for eight months to Eric (whom she met while hanging out at Northbrook Court as a teenager and was reunited with 10 years later). He proposed at the Aquarium, the site of their first date many years prior. The wedding was held at the Botanical Garden’s, followed by a European Cruise, a move to Evanston, and then back to work. Eric works nearby at Walgreen’s Corporate Headquarters. She is one of three children and has a long-haired Chihuahua Rubio, who was a cast member of a Legally Blonde production in the suburbs. It is a pleasure having Jackie on our team!
