SUMMER 2013

Dear Weinberg Families and Residents, Welcome to our Summer Edition! I apologize to those of you who received our Spring Edition late by email. I wanted to thank those who participated in our Memorial Day BBQ at Gidwitz. We had 200+ family members in attendance, enjoying our musical entertainment, food, face painting and balloon sculptures. It was wonderful seeing the several generations visiting with our residents. Our semi-annual farmers market took place June 20th with our vendors selling fresh produce, jewelry and scarves. We had great weather and it was another Weinberg Success! Lastly, we participated in the 4th of July Deerfield Parade for the first time. Staff members from all of our departments (Food Service, Engineering, Life Enrichment, Administration, and Personal Care) decorated our Shalom bus (SEE FRONT PAGE) and walked together through Deerfield promoting CJE SeniorLife, Weinberg Community. It was lots of fun seeing many familiar faces and supporting our larger community! Please come and join us in August for our Parkinsons Art Fair on August 11th and join our team and walk with us in this year’s Alzheimer’s Walk being held on September 21st. On a more serious note, please remind all of your relatives and friends that when they are visiting residents at either Gidwitz or Friend Center, they must sign in and out. This is only for the safety and security of the visitors, our residents and staff members so we know who is in and out of the building in case of emergency. Keep your eye out for our emails and flyers that we will be sending on our upcoming events. As a reminder, we have our resident referral program. If any resident or family member refers a resident to either Gidwitz or Friend Center and the person signs a 1 year lease, you will receive a check for $750.00. Our best referrals come from you, so please think of us! Feel free to call me with any suggestions at any time. Jennifer Weininger– Director Of Weinberg Community for Senior Living 847-236-7856

A few reminders:

Please sign in at the front desk, and sign out when leaving—-we need to insist on this for the safety of our residents and staff. Please obtain a form at the front desk when going out of town, and indicate an emergency contact for when you are away. You can alternately call front desk to give the above information, and it will be sent to pertinent staff. If you have a private caregiver working for you, please make sure we are aware of this. If your family member is in the hospital and will be going to a rehab facility, please advise us, to guarantee continuity of care.

Please share with us any recent or upcoming simchas in your family so that we may share in your joy!

Don’t forgot the Alzheimer’s Association Walk/Fundraiser is September 21st in Glenview So far, we at Weinberg have raised over $1500.00 and are continuing to host events, raffles, and more to help and promote this wonderful cause. Please let us know if you would like to participate!

Lester Spielman Lester has spent much of his life associated with the Chicago Public School System(CPS), starting at Budlong Elementary School, Roosevelt H.S. and later as a teacher and principal with CPS. He attended Wright Jr College, and then Roosevelt University, as a Poli Sci major and Ed minor. Student teaching was at Farragut H.S., as a Civics instructor. He furthered his education at the U of I with a Master’s Degree in School Administration. After teaching for 11 years, he became the Principal of Anderson Elementary School. Lester was the youngest in a sibship of 3 boys. His parents immigrated to the US from the Ukraine and owned several wet wash laundries. His brothers shared their enthusiasm for classical music, listening to the Steinway Symphony Orchestra on the radio, the theme music by Mozart. Thus began his love of this genre of music. Lester maintains an active life style , attending the Chicago Symphony, Marriott Theater, and ballroom dancing at the Moose Lodge and the Shore Club—-5 formal dances a year at various country clubs. His pals from Mission Hills come to Gidwitz for their Monday night poker game, and Monday mornings are spent at the North Shore Men’s Club, meeting at a local temple. Lester’s lady friend of many years, Enid Silverman, an artist and art teacher, shares many of the aforementioned activities. Lester has made many friends here at Gidwitz, and is a respected and well-liked member of our community.

Cindy Rush Cindy is a vital member of our Weinberg team. Many residents depend upon her to get to their medical appointments, and she also assists them in scheduling appointments to coordinate with her busy schedule. She begins her workday transporting 3-5 Adult Day Center attendees to Friend Center, and ends her day by returning them home. There are weekly shopping trips to Walgreens, Jewel, Dominicks, Walmart and Target. On Wednesdays, Gidwitz residents have lunch or cultural outings at various restaurants and other locations. Thursdays are an outing day for the Friend Center and Adult Day residents. Cindy spent her early years in Morton Grove, and graduated from Maine East H.S. After going away to college for one year, she returned home. Married at age 21, she had the 1st of her 2 children at age 23. Cindy worked evenings waitressing so that she could be at home with her kids during the day. Daughter Jennifer,28, is a dental hygienist, and son Sean is employed by the airlines. Husband John and Cindy recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary with a trip to the Dominican Republic along with 2 other couples, staying at the Hard Rock Resort. A great time was had by all. Cindy began her transportation career working for PACE, from 2004 to 2008. She has been our bus driver for the past 3 years. When asked about the patience she has with our residents, she replies that this was learned from her mother, who drove SEPTRAN buses. Being the youngest of 4 children—-3 older brothers, likely helped her to develop people skills. Spare time is enjoying the Cubs and Blackhawks, and spending time with her high school girlfriends—trips to Las Vegas, Lake Geneva, concerts, etc. She and John share household chores and he is the chef. Cindy “falls in love “ with the residents, and her goal is to care for them as if they were her parents. She has definitely met that goal!
