GIDWITZ PLACE FOR ASSISTED LIVING | FRIEND CENTER FOR MEMORY CARE

Welcome to our Summer Edition,

Happy Summer! Hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather we are finally having. We have been very busy at Gidwitz, Friend Center and Adult Day Services over the last few months. We had a wonderful Memorial Day Celebration at Gidwitz with 100+ family members and residents in attendance. We could not have had more perfect weather that afternoon. Families and residents all seemed to have a fabulous time in our photo booth taking multi-generational pictures and enjoying our delicious food. On a more serious note, a couple of weeks ago we had the honor of having Senator Julie Morrison come to our community and present on the state budget crisis and how it is and will continue to impact many organizations similar to CJE. Many social service organizations came to support her and had the opportunity to speak on how it will be impacting their organizations directly. 4th of July is around the corner and we are looking forward to walking in the 4th of July Parade in Deerfield again this year. For anyone who would like to join us, please let us know and we will discuss details in the weeks to come! It is always fun walking with staff members and families near the Shalom Bus! Please remember to think of us for any family or friends who would benefit from our community, whether it be for Gidwitz, Friend Center or our Adult Day Program! We appreciate any and all referrals! As always, I am available for anyone who wants to talk at any time, Jennifer Weininger Executive Director of Weinberg Community for Senior Living 847-236-7856

A few reminders: Please sign in at the front desk, and sign out when leaving—-we need to insist on this for the safety of our residents and staff. Please obtain a form at the front desk when going out of town, and indicate an emergency contact while you are away. Alternatively, you can call the front desk to give the above information, and it will be sent to pertinent staff. If you have a private caregiver working for you, please make sure we are aware of this. If your family member is in the hospital and will be going to a rehab facility, please advise us, to guarantee continuity of care. If you bring your pet to our building, please make sure that he/she is on a leash at all times.

As a reminder– If we do not have your current email address, please leave it at the front desk with the receptionist or email Tawanna.shack@cje.net so that we can keep current information on file.

PRIVATE DUTY CAREGIVERS– Those families who have private caregivers please make sure that any new caregivers meet with Tawanna Shack or Jonalyn Gumaya to have paperwork complete. A current TB test will also be necessary for the current year and criminal background check. If you have a caregiver who currently works for an agency, this information can be provided by them. This also applies to any and all substitutes you may have working for your loved one. If we do not have updated information on file, they may be asked to leave.

Carol Shapiro Carol has been a member of the Weinberg Community for over 5 years, experiencing a circuitous route from her birth in Poland in 1927. Her family owned a prosperous fabric store in the midst of the business district in Jaroslaw. She lived in a large house with her sister, two brothers, parents and housekeeper, whom they regarded as a grandmother. Mother was a businesswoman; hence the help of housekeeper, laundress, and cleaning help. There were several synagogues in the town, several quite beautiful. Kosher laws were observed by the Jewish population. September of 1939 saw the Nazi invasion, taking over City Hall and Town Square. As they gathered the Jews in the Town Square, they loudly broadcast ,over speakers, Hitler’s diatribes. A short time later the Jews were told to gather their belongings—their homes usurped by the invading force, put in cattle cars and transported to Germany and then to Russia. The family was sent to a camp in the Soviet Union—they were referred to as “political prisoners.” Both parents and sister perished in these conditions. After the war, Carol was returned to Poland. Resettled by HIAS, first in New York City, then Richmond VA, and at last to the Chicago area and Gidwitz Place. Married for 36 years, her husband died at age 62. Son Jack resides in Barrington, and son Randy in Fairfax County. Carol has 3 grandchildren. Carol is a pleasant and friendly woman, in spite of what she endured during the War years. She has made friendships here, enjoys her dining companions, attends Shabbat Services, exercise classes, and is a participant in the weekly Women’s Group. To know Carol is to gain the opportunity to learn of the history of WWII through the eyes of a Holocaust Survivor.

Robert Mann (The Friend Center) Robert “Bob” Mann was born June 7, 1933 at Mount Sinai Hospital. He grew up on the west side of Chicago and went to Marshall High school. Bob was drafted into the Army and served two years in the United States. He met his wife Charlotte, a Gidwitz resident, when she was 18 and he was 22 years old. They got fixed up by two different friends. He proposed within that year and they got married at Ridgeview Hotel. They had their honeymoon at Oakton Manner in Wisconsin. He loves Charlotte’s big heart. They have three children and five beautiful grandchildren. After that, Bob went to Roosevelt University and got his degree in Accounting. He was a CPA for over 40 years. One of his favorite things about being an accountant was meeting all of his clients because they all became very close friends. His favorite musical artists are Pavarotti, Maria Callas, and Louis Armstrong. His favorite places he has traveled to are the Rocky Mountains, London, Paris, Israel, Hawaii, and Italy. His advice to younger generations is, “Live life while you’re young because you may not get a chance.” David Kopp (Adult Day Care Services) David was born in Syracuse, NY. He attended Syracuse University undergraduate and Law School. He passed the bar and the CPA exam and became a tax specialist. He ended his career as Vice-President of Tax at Waste management, Inc. then relocated to Oak Brook, IL. After his retirement he traveled the world with his wife Jackie and visited the 7 continents. After sustaining a traumatic brain injury David started attending the Friend Center, where he enjoys making new friends and participating in all the activities.

Michelle Bernstein Michelle is a valuable member of our Weinberg team. She is the Community Outreach Liaison, communicating the mission and quality of life that benefit those who are residents of Gidwitz Place, Friend Center, or attend Adult Day Service. Immersed in senior housing for 18 years, her knowledge base is large. Her career began in property management, and one of the properties was The Breakers in Edgewater, and that drew her to retirement communities. Michelle grew up in Des Plaines, attended Maine East High School and graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in Corporate Communication. She has one brother, who is a magician in Vegas. Michelle currently lives in Deerfield with her 2 adorable girls. Ariella is 12 years old and preparing for her bat mitzvah. Marisa, easily identified by a mass of curls, will enter fifth grade in September. Both girls take dance and piano lessons. Mom and daughters enjoy yearly winter break vacations in Mexico and trips to New York City. The girls look forward to summer time at Camp Chi. In her spare time, Michelle attends theater and live music venues. She bike rides and socializes with friends. She is on the Board of Highland Park Hospital, and on committees for Alzheimer's, LUNGevity, and Parkinson's Disease. This is one busy woman! When asked what the favorite part of her job is, she remarks, “The greeting I get from our residents when I walk into the Gidwitz Lobby. Obviously, we are all so happy to have Michelle as part of the Weinberg family. If you are part of a social organization and/or synagogue, Michelle would love to talk to your groups and educate them on all of the unique and innovative programs that CJE SeniorLife has to offer to the larger community!
